Super cool video Fishman….we have some in our 20 long betta tank but the snails go through it all day long and have seemed to thin it out….we started putting in more food for them and we’ll see if that helps keep them from eating it and maybe it’ll fill back in🤔🤔👍👍
That happens to the moss in my tanks. What kind of snails do you have? I have a tank with nearly every kind of snail. MTS, ramshorn, bladder, pond, apple, and some trapdoor snails. All but the trapdoors go nuts in the moss, laying their eggs and munching on it. I believe the babies really love eating both moss and floating plants. I can always tell when new batches of snails have hatched when I start seeing tiny holes and bites taken out of the duckweed, salvinia, and water lettuce leaves. I can take out a clump of moss or floaters and shake out hundreds of snails.lol
@@katalinacastanares4602 hahaha yeah this tank has them all as well…..but we are more selective with our other tanks ….. this one’s kind of the snail melting pot🐌🐌😀😀👍👍
Good morning and happy Friday my friend! I'm glad you did this video. I'm one of those people that hasn't had the greatest luck with Java moss. I think part of my problem is because I have Subwasstang too maybe? Could they be having "plant warfare"? Allelopothy (I hope I spelled that right 🤣 Look at me trying to use big words 🤣🤸) I really love the look of it when it grows into a mature mound!! It reminds me of having really beautiful shrubs around a house 😹🤣🌿 Recently I attached a Fluval breeder box to my aquarium and put the Java moss I had in there and it really seems to be thriving🌿💚💪👍 The other thing that's funny, since I've moved to Kentucky, is I do not have any duckweed!! I can say I'm actually sad about that!! I'm trying my hand at Water lettuce again!! I had great success with it in Virginia 🌿💚 Java moss as you have explained and shown us is great for fry and even as a plant we can keep with difficult fish that may not normally do well with plants!! I also have hornwort that I try to keep under control so it doesn't rob too much of the nutrients to the other plants... whew.... doing my best to achieve balance without too much thought 🤣(there I go working without tools again 🤣) Thank you for covering everything from water flow, to the lighting and even rotating Java moss to help it keep growing and healthy!! Another plant I've had great success with that I actually recommend beginners is Pogostemin St. Octopus!! It can get leggy on you but it seems to be an easy plant and a great nitrate sucker 🤣🌿💚 I hope you and everybody has a wonderful day and a fantastic weekend!! 🙏🌿🐟🌿💚🥰
Hey Mary! Sad about no duckweed, say it isn't so lol! Thanks so much for sharing your experiences! Your the second one who has said subwasserteng has out competed their moss. I didn't think that was possible. Have a great weekend my friend!
My 1st plants were Java fern and anubias...and I still have those original plants years later! My Java ferns, anubias, and Java Moss I propagate in glass bowls around the house with some additional plant springs here and there, and they're constantly outgrowing their containers...and in the meantime, they're very decorative. 🌿
I bought some java moss and Christmas moss but they didn't do great. The subwaaaertang out-competed it and baby moss balls in one tank and a gently shredded moss ball that turned into dozens of smaller ones out-competed them both in another tank. I have a friend halfway across town that has luck with totally different plants than I do. In my experience, sometimes you need a try a few things to see what works for you.
Java moss is the ideal aquarium plant, especially if you want your fish to breed. The fry love the moss and the snails are not all that interested. I love the wild look, almost all of my tanks have large tangles of java moss that all grew from one bunch I bought over a year ago. I have mostly sponge filters and only do top offs, I believe the moss is excellent for keeping the water healthy.
My 30br is 30% a field of java moss. One thing I haven't been able to solve is spots of green hair algae. I suspect it has to do with flow. java moss this size seems to work like filter floss and it just slows everything down even with a small powerhead aimed right at it.
Java moss is great at creating dead spots in current. That's good for fry but bad for collecting detritus. This can lead to nutrient issues, which algae loves
How do you keep the moss in a neat bush like that. I seem to have single strands mixed in with subwassertang. Do you tie the Java moss to wood or something? Also you mentioned pruning it, would like more details please.
I love Java Moss, I have it in most of my tanks except for the pleco tanks as they need good water flow and this stuff moves about too much scaring the plecos.
I purchased 3 balls (small) of Java moss from an online seller. It arrived fairly brown, supposedly because it was grown somewhat emersed. I put it into my 5 gal. shrimp tank (cherry shrimp) with a good light. Since then it has pretty much just died...all brown and falling into pieces, a real mess. No luck with this so-called easy beginner plant for me!
Java moss is a staple in any new aquarium I set up.
👍❤👍
Such a great plant! Thanks for coming by!
If you give it really low light, the plant will freak out and grow crazy within a week. This method works for me all time.
I have too much already lol! Thanks for watching!

i love moss. I plan on keepiing more types and guppy moss is a good one i like flipping my moss every couple of days
Hey Kris! That's a great way to prevent issues with it!
Always nice to hear information on an "easy" plant. Thanks Fred O
Hey Fred! I didn't think anyone would be interested. Just shows how much I need to learn about making RUclips videos. Have a great weekend!
Dry some out and smoke it! Subwassertang is also an EASY plant that fills areas nicely.
Hey Don! I love the smell of moss, but not that much lol!
very good video, excellent, you have done a great job, I liked me, a hug 👍74
Thanks so much!

Hey Aaron! Well said! Crazy that your subwassertang out competes Java moss

I've never bought java moss, some snuck in on some java fern. Given enough time i now have many tanks with giant balls of java moss.
The stuff does get everywhere. Not as bad as duckweed lol!

Hey Sue! When I break up a large piece of moss, I just pretend I'm making a snowball. I do this very gently of course.
@@FishmanEricRussell okay, thanks
Hey Fishman this plant seems versatile. Great video and info covered! Would this plant survive in high PH? Sounds like a tough plant
My water (tap water) is hard with a high pH. Java moss grows very well in these conditions. Fred O
@@FredHOleniuk Thanks
Thanks and shouldn't be a problem
@@FishmanEricRussell thanks Fishman 🤘
Hi how do you get it to float and stay in one clump, mine just separates into a million bits and makes a big mess?
As long as the growing environment is healthy for it, it just does it on it's own
I love Java Moss, I have it in most of my tanks except for the pleco tanks as they need good water flow and this stuff moves about too much scaring the plecos.

You got some bad moss. I've grown it immersed and it's always green.
