I mean, the West had an ascendant neo-Nazi movement in the 70's, and they were reacting to that. We just... didn't eradicate all the neo-Nazi ideas back then.
This song still describes the lunatic fringe we see today... not to get political but the lunatic fringe has taken over a political party completely. I'll leave it to you to guess which...
While teaching at a New Hampshire camp when this was made, while driving up to Quebec City (in a mistaken belief that French Canadian girls would swoon over us) Lunatic Fringe and Radar Love were the songs on continuous loop. Driving music indeed.
Another band to consider is "The Kings". Their hit party song..."This Beat Goes On / Switchin' To Glide". Yeah, they joined two songs together, so great for getting the party started.
That's exactly who I thought this was when I first heard this amazing song back in 1982. And the funny thing is that Pink Floyd is my favorite band of all-time.
I went to a concert and they were the opening band. I knew the song but didnt know who sang it. When they played this I was up out of my seat jumping up and down like a little kid.
I love these old videos from when the music video was a brand new art form. Nobody had the faintest idea what they were doing. They are campy as hell today but at the time it was the coolest thing ever.
Thanks for doing some Canadian music! There'e another musician who lived close to tom cochrane, I know this because i'm from the same town. You will be amazingly surprised to listen to Jeff Healey. He played with Stevie Ray Von and he is blind. A great song is...Can you see the light live. Absolutely amazing!
So many great lyrics in this song, all pointed at the Lunatic Fringe "You're in hiding And you hold your meetings" (KKK), "But I'm on guard this time Against your final solution" (Nazism). But the one that hits me most and I know had to be influenced by John Lennon's death which happened while he was writing and recording this - "We can hear the footsteps out along the walkway" which makes reference to Lennon being murdered on the walkway to his apartment. I get goosebumps every time I hear that line. Just a fantastic song with a great message that we will not let hate rule....Add Harem Scarem's "Change The World" as another Canadian band with a fantastic song that has a message of love not hate.
He played Big League unplugged before a Canucks home game in 2008 dedicated to Canucks rookie defenseman Luc Bourdon who was killed in a motorcycle accident before the season started. It's a sad event, but Tom Cochrane's performance starts at about 5:53 , wasn't a dry eye in the house. ruclips.net/video/_HGD12AqYjk/видео.html
This is always one of my songs I played Driving through the Arizona Desert on I-10 at 3 a.m. with the T-Tops off. This song was also in the 80s movie Vision Quest.
This song was Huge on the radio when I first started getting stoned and getting laid - brings back lots good memories. We used to have things called drive-in theatres. If you had a pick up truck you had it made.
Great tune. I met and briefly chatted with Tom Cochrane in the mid 90's at my place of business...a very chill and down to earth fellow. And very tall...my guess at the time was 6'6" or 6' 8".
They used this a few times on the soundtrack for the TV show "Miami Vice". I was one of the first to play it on the radio at a rock station down in Charleston SC.
Great song from up north. I met these guys after a show in Evansville, IN. You couldn't meet nicer guys anywhere. Ken Greer, who played the pedal steel guitar, asked me what I thought of it and the solos he played. They were AWESOME!!!
I love the way all your heads bobbed to the beat and truly enjoyed it. I'm 53 now so I was around when it debuted, and I've always loved the song for the best uniqueness of it, but associate it now with political fringe wackos. Enjoyed your take on it.
Awesome song guys, well done. They have an amazing catalogue. Used to listen to these guys and the Payolas, which of course leads one to suggest Carol Pope to you as well (High School Confidential).
This song was so cool when it came out around 1980 or 1981; heavy rotation on the brand new MTV network! The whole album is good and actually had a couple of singles.
I enjoyed this song as part of the soundtrack for Visionquest with Matthew Modine. I would suggest Common Disaster by the Cowboy Junkies. The singer's voice is silky smooth and I was going to see them live at Tampa theatre, but the concert was on 9/11. I thought it may be inappropriate.
I remember the first time I heard this song at a dance club of all places , very much out the norm for this bar and the DJ threw this on and I just fell in love with this song. Had to go ask him the band and song and went out and bought it the next day. Still a great song! Song has been in movies and I believe it was even in Miami Vice.
If you ever decide to revisit Red Rider try, “What Have You Got to Do”, “Human Race”, “Big League” and “Can’t Turn Back”. Some other Canadian bands you should like, Max Webster, “High Class in Borrowed Shoes”, “Battlescar” or The Pursuit Of Happiness, “I’m An Adult Now”, “White Man” or The Tea Party, “Temptation”, “The Messenger” to name a couple.
When this album first came out someone gave it to me for my birthday. I wasn't quite sure what it would sound like. Turns out the whole album is awesome.
This song was my first upload on my youtube channel with me playing along to it. I did my best without using a slide but I know how to play that as well just dont own a lap steel guitar and I only have 20 subscribers on my channel lol. Thank you for recognizing a well written song... also you could say " As Far As I Am"
“This is like a highway road” ... Lol. Ironically , the lead singer (Tom Cochrane) has a hit from his solo career called “Life is a Highway”. Cheers from Canada. BTO “Four Wheel Drive” is banger from the late 70’s
Some other Canadian rock bands are Saga....their song On the loose was huge. Honeymoon suite...song..New girl now! Glass Tiger!!! !!!!Their first album(thin red line) was fire! Also did a song with singer Brian Adams! I also have seen this band live They played front for Journey, in 1987....they were really great! I think when they filmed the video for this song, they deliberately tried to look as unsettling and disturbing as possible via nearly dead expressions, minimum movements, and unusual lighting angles, to give the impression that they were out on the 'lunatic fringe'.
Hello Guys, this song is the music from the movie “Vision Quest”! It’s the intro to the final big wrestling scene. It’s epic! Thanks for bringing back great memories. Need this kind of heat on these frigid nights here in Rochester, NY
Your so right,..when this came out,..and they performed on shows,..and you see him playing that guitar I had only ever, seen country bands play,..think the first time I saw that guitar was on Hee Haw(ok now you youngsters won't know what show that is,.but let me tell you, the musicians on there, some of the best in any genre, or part of the music business,..they more than anyone, turned me onto country, and along with the banjo performance in movie Deliverance, turned me onto Bluegrass), Ohh and yeah, this is some in the car going on a mission music,..like Sam and Dean in the car driving down some highway on their way to do battle with some demon,..or even better a mad car chase with Steve McQueen in that badass Mustang chasing some bad guys down!,..heard this so many times blasting from somebody's car back then,..I actually remember it blasting from a convertible,..do keep going they're not from Canada, but check out Rosington Collins,."Don't Misunderstand Me, Prime Time",..very, very good,..Godspeed, Peace ✌
Others have mentioned Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO), and I would add that if you want "Crank it to 11" road trip song, check out "Let It Ride" from them!
If you wanna check out some other great songs from Red Rider, listen to my favorite song from them, "White Hot", and from the same album, "Don't Fight It"
Another song from Tom Cochrane - "Big League" a song about a young hockey player killed in a motor vehicle and later released song as a charity single for a real life accident - On April 6, 2018, sixteen people were killed and thirteen were injured when a northbound coach bus struck a westbound semi-trailer truck that blew through a stop sign near Armley, Saskatchewan, Canada. The driver of the semi-truck had failed to yield at a flashing stop sign at the intersection of Highways 35 and 335. The semi-trailer was travelling at a speed of approximately 100 km/h (62 mph). Most of the deceased and injured were players from the Humboldt Broncos, a junior ice hockey team from Humboldt, Saskatchewan, which plays in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL).
In high school and training wrestling joined the military after high school after I got out trained MMA BJJ and I wish I was a little younger to fight UFC but was a little old for it. The song is vision quest
Greetings from Canada eh?- I really enjoy it when you guys discover some of our hidden gems. Not a Canadian band - If you guys want to check out Larkin Poe for some really awesome sisters playing some sweet bluesy pedal steel guitar - I believe they are from Georgia
Yay Canada ...great you guys are rocking to Classic Canuck rock. Saw these guys... oddly enough they opened for April wine. They opened with this song and was amazing.
Great reaction...another Canadian band that was huge in Europe is Saga. Their 2 biggest hits are Wind Him Up and On The Loose...love your Canadian reactions...thanks
Oh guys, there are so many great Canadian bands and singer/songwriters. This is not a definitive list but quite representative of artists up to about 1995. I grew up listening to most of these. You know the biggies like Rush, The Guess Who and Neil Young, and you've heard a bit of the underrated rock trio Triumph and April Wine (Roller and so much more), but also check out Bachman Turner Overdrive (Guess Who guitarist Randy Bachman's kickass rock group - you've likely heard of their monster 1974 hit Takin' Care of Business), Gordon Lightfoot (Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, If You Could Read My Mind, Sundown, Carefree Highway etc.), The Tragically Hip (Little Bones, Three Pistols, New Orleans is Sinking, Blow at High Dough, Ahead By a Century, Fifty Mission Cap - enjoy the rabbit hole), The Band (originally the backing band for Ronnie Hawkins then Bob Dylan - The Weight, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Cripple Creek etc.), the now little known Klaatu (one of my favourites, rumoured in the late 1970s to be The Beatles reformed - do the full studio versions of Calling Occupants, Sub Rosa Subway, True Life Hero and Anus of Uranus off their debut album 3:47 EST), Saga (from my humble little hometown of Oakville, Ontario - On the Loose and Wind Him Up), The Kings (also from my hometown of Oakville - their super catchy party hit This Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide), Five Man Electrical Band (social commentary mega hit Signs), Bryan Adams (anything off the Reckless or Cuts Like a Knife albums), Blue Rodeo, Loverboy and the criminally virtually unknown - outside of Canada - Max Webster (Kim Mitchell's original band - the super high energy and quirky lyrics of High Class In Borrowed Shoes plus Hangover, Let Go The Line, A Million Vacations, Oh War!, Gravity and On the Road.) I know this is a lot but you asked for Canadian band/song suggestions. Keep up the great work. I'm always looking to see if you guys are reacting to 1960s, '70s and '80s rock songs.
Jeff Healey- See The Light Night Music 1988 Chilliwack- Fly At Night, Trooper- Boys in the Bright White Sportscar, Aldo Nova- Fantasy, Steppenwolf- Magic Carpet Ride, Prism- Don't Let Him Know, Glass Tiger- Don't Forget Me
Lunatic Fringe and that classic opening guitar riffs. It’s been heard on Miami Vice” that hip and always stylish cop drama from the 80’s.
This tune kicks ass. Plain and simple.
Love it how all the heads start bobbin when the main riff hits. Always a good sign
I know! I was loving that!
"This is like you're on a mission"
You mean like a Vision Quest kind of thing 😅
The lyrics from this are very fitting today and were ahead of their time.
I mean, the West had an ascendant neo-Nazi movement in the 70's, and they were reacting to that. We just... didn't eradicate all the neo-Nazi ideas back then.
Back then the lunatic Fringe was 5% of the population, now it's 38%,
By the twilight's last gleaming

Great song! Another song I was fortunate to hear when it originally came out on MTV in the 80's!

O God YES!!!!!!!😍💖
Totally agree! Love The Kings!
The Kings are out of Oakville. Tom Cochrane lives in Oakville. Coincidence?
Always got a Pink Floyd vibe from this.. Not the lyrics, but the rhythm guitar and then that solo!
Yep I've always felt that way. Very Gilmour
I always thought it was a PF song. HaHa.
I have to agree! First time I heard I just knew I was hearing a Pink Floyd song! 😂
Same! I did think it was Pink Floyd
That's exactly who I thought this was when I first heard this amazing song back in 1982. And the funny thing is that Pink Floyd is my favorite band of all-time.

Loved this song as a teenager in high school, I used to hear it on the radio and liked it immediately.
We used to come out to this as our basketball team in 1988..

Tom had a string of Canadian solo hits, including Big League! And Red Rider’s White Hot is a must listen!
He played Big League unplugged before a Canucks home game in 2008 dedicated to Canucks rookie defenseman Luc Bourdon who was killed in a motorcycle accident before the season started.

One of their first and greatest hits in Canada is "White Hot". Would love to hear your reaction on this one.
This song was also used in the movie Vision Quest with Matthew Modine
My teen years ! It still plays in boston 100.7
When this song came out, I (we) had no idea what it was about, but the solo reminds me very much of David Gilmour.

Title track from the movie Vision Quest.👍👍
I highly recommend a band named Chilliwack and the song Fly At Night, one of the best classic rock songs of all time.
Loved Chilliwack! Best to you..
Saw them at the Metro in Boston
This song played at end of the movie Vision Quest with Matthew Modine.
Great song from Vision Quest movie. Perfect sound

Canadian musical royalty has to be Bachman Turner Overdrive. Their greatest banger is 'Roll on down the Highway" . Gotta play it!!
With a Not Fragile, chaser perhaps?
@@toddstevens13 these guys would love this.
YESSSS!!
I heard this song in the 80s movie "Vision Quest" the first movie Mathew Modine was in prior to "Full Metal Jacket".
Love this song! ❤ Great reaction!
Great song! Singer Tommy Cochran went on to release the song Life is a highway in the 90's. They also used the song in Disney's animated film Cars!
pure corporate
Another great song.
A song about standing up to and stopping Nazis/Fascism. The "final solution" lyric is the giveaway.
Right. Works with Trumptardism as well.
Great tune. I met and briefly chatted with Tom Cochrane in the mid 90's at my place of business...a very chill and down to earth fellow. And very tall...my guess at the time was 6'6" or 6' 8".
An episode of Miami Vice named Smuggler's Blues opened with this song in 1985. Everyone in Canada heard this on the radio frequently.
LOve this song. The steel guitar solo is a killer. Great reaction!
I'm 56 and just now learned that was a steel guitar. Never too old to learn as they say.
They used this a few times on the soundtrack for the TV show "Miami Vice". I was one of the first to play it on the radio at a rock station down in Charleston SC.
Gilmore plays the steel guitar in the song "High Hopes" live, I think it's on the pulse video.
This song was featured in the 1985 Matthew Modine movie, Vision Quest. That intro is epic.
