THANKS for listening to my confession...i destroyed a book..and I think it was fun...kinda. Lol.
I was raised the same way! But as a lifelong reader my love of books is strong. When I finally ended up accidentally buying and identical copy of one, I cut very quickly but with some emotional issues for sure...now it’s a little easier.
tracker 584 Books were valued in my parents home also. Money was tight and owning a book was very special and something to be shared and passed on to the next generation. My mom and I spent hours going through her beautiful flower gardening books.
I felt exactly like that until I went back to college where I highlighted important information in my books. Now I believe a book isn't really mine until I've put my stamp on it by highlighting or underlining important points. I admit I am hesitant to tell shop owners that I intend to rip apart a book from the thrift store and truth be told I simply can't cut apart some books until I have a second copy. But the reality is once bought a book is mine to keep and do whatever I want with it.
I wanted to thank you. I sat down this morning to start what is a difficult day for me, typically a day of mourning as 15 yrs ago to the day lost my Mother. I sat down and saw you had a video and watched. It left me with a sense of peace. You are pleasant to listen to and gave me some of that peace this morning. Loved all the books you shared, and the ideas and inspiration with them. It may sound silly, but sometimes one person, who does not even know it, can make a difference. I know the work filming can take. So I appreciate the time you take, the amount of info, and the sharing. I too love to pick up atlas, garden, and floral books, but had not thought about the animal and butterfly books. Will be on look out now. Kat your comment was the loveliest thing i have seen all day! It really warmed my heart and i was so happy reading it 💞. I'm so glad that the video gave you a little bit of peace this morning and i completely understand how someone can make a difference even just through a video. There have been times when i have been bedridden, as i suffer from an illness and its during those times when i'm feeling really bad that even a video can help, it provides a form of comfort for what you are going through. That day that i was filming, i really just felt like having a chat to you all, because i know we all have this same love for books, journals, stationary etc, even though some people don't realise ,that to provides me with some company, knowing across the seas we are all sharing in the same interests.I hope you can now find some beautiful animal or butterfly books, even if not in a thrift shop, online or in a second hand book store. @@TheMushroomMarket Your response actually made my eyes well up. It made me feel so happy to have added to your day. I am so sorry you deal with illness. I am truly sending out so many good wishes and hopes to you. It is such a large world, and I am so glad we can connect in this way, even if far away. I miss my childhood when people came to each other's homes with some cheery wishes or a casserole or something. I would do that for you if closer. But for now this will have to do. I know what you mean about the videos. I started making them myself (though I have not in some time and have to find courage to again,) with only the intention of connecting to people and making friends, since where I am at does not really afford those opportunities. Sometimes we just have to make the best of what means we have. =) I am so glad to be able to connect to, even if in some small way, to someone as sweet as you. =) I love to hear your chatter. Have a wonderful week/weekend, and hoping in some way, some how you feel better. Big hugs back, Kat =)
@@ThePastelKat Thank you so much, i feel like we are in the same boat in a lot of ways! No one i personally know does the same kinds of things, it would be nice to share in it more. I have a thrift outlet in Texas where all books are 5/$1. I pick up birds, fish, plants, stars, like you. I also will always pick up dictionaries with thin paper pages, and I have a collection of books in other languages, these make great backgrounds for collages. And maps. OMG, I love maps.
I'm in Texas, too. Where is the store you are talking of, Sandra? I absolutely love this RUclips episode of yours, Mushroom Market! Lots of interesting info. I ordered one of the books already that you showed us. In general, I have a lot of these types of items...Lots of stationery from my childhood in the 70's when I lived in West Germany and would get stationery from my grandmother in East Germany. I used to have a couple of dozen pen pals in high school, too. I am eager to watch some of your other videos. I am not new to arts and crafts, but in making journals. Thank you so much. My cherished possessions can become a part of my art.
Hello! And greetings from Pennsylvania USA! I enjoyed this video very much! I do the same thing when it comes to finding and using older books! I have about 20 different bird books alone haha! Birds are my favorite animal and you have some beautiful old books! I too also make my own envelopes I use old calendar pages they make sturdy beautiful envelopes. I recently joined the Letter Writers Alliance and signed up for some pen pals. So far I have 4 penpals. I got a letter from my newest one yesterday. She lives in St Croix Virgin Islands. I can’t think of anything better than getting a big fat snail mail letter in the post! Thank you for a great video!
Hi Nancy! I love making envelopes from book pages, i don't often find very nice calendars, actually i have only found 1 which has some nice wildflower illustrations, its so lovely i have been hoarding it lol. Thats lovely you are doing snail mail, letters are always so nice to receive in the mail. Thank you so much for your lovely comment and for taking the time to watch this video, i'm really happy you enjoyed it xxx
Love this video!!! Goodwill and Salvation Army are about my only available ‘to me’ thrift stores. Doesn’t matter I still find some great stuff there. Love all your videos.... Thank You!!!
I would love to visit those thrift stores if i ever came to the U.S, i have seen some thrifting video's there but not really any from crafters. I'm so glad you enjoyed watching and thank you so much for taking the time to watch my video's xxx
Hello Sarah, I really found this so useful and helpful. As you said, these books are getting a second chance when we use them for our journals and art.....I really really don’t understand these people who say you shouldn’t destroy them?!!! You’ve paid for them, it’s your call. Thank you so much love watching you work and you really talk sense. Thank you so much xxx Mags
Hi Mags, thank you, i'm really glad you found the video useful. I enjoy using the books as much as i enjoy looking at them, i love putting all the birds and florals together in packages. xxxx
Really enjoyed this look into your stash of papers! I think you are very lucky. I always look for these kind of things too, but here in Sweden they're even more rare than where you are it seams.
@@TheMushroomMarket Yes, always looking but rarely finding these older types of papers, I think it's because people don't realize anyone could be interested in papers! But I'll keep looking. 😋
@@iHanna I think that can happen! I have seen very old books thrown into boxes for free outside of thrift shops before. It really amazes me that they think no one is interested. Keep looking and hopefully you can find a shop that has some lovely books or perhaps even look online at second hand book stores?
How can you pass up a gorgeous book if you only have 1! lol. I would buy them over and over if they were something i really loved and used often. xxxx Thanks so much for watching Janice
I'm so happy to hear that you enjoyed the video Tammy! Yes book fairs, thrift shops, car boot sales even antique stores although they can be pricey :), also you can purchase books like this at online second hand book stores. World of Books is a great website that I use :) xxx
The illustrations are so precious and one of a kind. I make a color laser copies of such special treasures and even resize them if they happen to be too small or too large for my collage composition. You gave us many great ideas, thank you!
A great idea Nancy! I do have some books that i can't cut into, like a vintage mushroom book that i treasure. I may do the same and copy it 😊. I'm so glad i could give some ideas, thank you so much for watching xxx

I have that same bird book in the beginning of the video. Its a great book. I just arrived in Sydney today from Colorado. Very excited to hunt for some thrift stores. Love your work!
Hi Michell, I hope you have a lovely time in Sydney, i have never looked down there at the thrift shops myself, would be very interesting though. Thank you so much for watching xxx
I love those alternative page books, the laboratory & ledger ones. How fun. It’s neat to see what things you’d use & what you can find. The daffodil & envelope stationary kit is just stunning!! I really wish I could find something like that. Daffodils are my favorite flower. Tfs!! 💜😁👍🏻
Oh really Samantha, i wish i knew that before i would have popped some in with your previous order from my shop! I will keep that in mind 😉. I love to collect the cards and envelopes and the stationary is always great to find, i do have to look hard for what i have though, i wish there was more of an abundance of vintage stationary around. I always see people in the US finding amazing old stationary, ledgers and flashcards etc, i wish i could come there and hunt about with an empty suitcase lol. Thank you so much for watching xxx
Hi Sarah ....the lot of 6 Readers Digest ....even the front cover is cool to scan and print and use it as Front cover of a garden JJ......t too have a great collection ...You got to love the $1 bargains ...tfs 👍

I adore vintage bird books 😍 these are wonderful. I usually leave them for a while, just enjoying them before I start cutting them up. Thank you for sharing 😙💕
Hi Sarah, you have a wonderful selection of books. The ledger and square paper books are a cool find! I’ve never seen anything like that in the UK, but I will definitely start looking for them now TFS 💕💕
Oh Really Melanie. I would have thought the Uk would have a lot of things like ledgers and old books. I can just imagine the treasures you could find over there, i wish i could have looked in some thrift shops when i was in the UK. Thank you so much for watching xxx
So much fun to see what you find and compare it with the kind of things that I can find here in the Netherlands. Now that I live in the north the thrifshops are even cheaper then in de big cities. I share your passion for the hunt for a “new” old book and there will be fleemarkets from the end of this month until september and I think I need a trolley or something to carry all that I find😂😂😉
Oh wow that would be so fun Maud! Yes even bring a suitcase! I have seen people take those into the book fest, even better with the upright kind on wheels that you can move about freely and load up without having to carry them lol. I wish i could be there in the Netherlands with you hunting about, it would be so fun xxx
Great ideas thank you. You reminded me that I have some butterflies from a similar book, that I filed away, that I want to use in my Scripture journal.
Thanks so much Eileen, i do love to collect books and vintage stationary, although its not easy to find, but it makes it all the more rewarding when i do! The student workbooks are really fun and I'm looking forward to putting them in journals, i don't remember doing those sorts of things myself back in the 80's though lol. Me to Darlene, that would be so much fun! I can completely understand not being able to cut them up, i to had some doubts and there are actually even some books that i don't want to cut up either. @@TheMushroomMarket oh yes I'm sure you would.... My book collection is growing so I'm sure yours must be huge.... I've not been doing this that long ha ha!!
Fabulous collection! When you talked about the Lifeline Bookfairs, I immediately Googled them and discovered I'll be down in Sydney when the next one is held there... YAAAAYYY!
Yay that is so great Jennifer! I bet the Sydney bookfest would have so many books! If it's the same as the one in Brisbane, then it will have sections by price, - the $1 section, the $2.50 section (which also has the stationary table in it), and i also believe there is a section that just has books marked at individual prices. I go to that one last as its generally $5 upwards, but you often find the bigger bird books and floral books in that section. Also to note, i have seen books that are in that section and the $2.50 section that have also been in the $1 sections, so sometimes you can overpay because they have spread out the duplicates over the sections. Hope that helps, oh and bring many bags, they also have trolleys you can hire or you can even bring a suitcase lololol. I hope you will find many treasures there, keep me informed with how you go. Big Hugs xxx - Sarah
@@TheMushroomMarket Oh wow Sarah - thanks for all the wonderful advice. Lots of bags it is! Appreciate the heads up about same book/different price. You scored some awesome books to use in journaling. I wish I could get half of what you’ve found. They aren’t let go of too much around where I live unfortunately. Great deals

Hello Neighbour! Have you been to the Gold Coast one? I didn't go to that one this year as i noticed it was different to the Brisbane one, and they overcharged the last time i went. The Brisbane bookfest was on for a whole week this year, which was great, they kept restocking every day. xxx
Thats so wonderful to hear Kim, i'm so glad it has given some information. Even if you like some of the books shown its always good to see inside the pages so that you can decided if you want to purchase it also, when looking online for books they don't often have pictures of what the inside pages look like. xxx
I just bought that first bird book you showed from an op shop like a couple of weeks ago. And I have multiples of some books too ones I particularly like , the author is Joyce Blake she does beautiful pictures of roses and flowers .
Hi Irene, sorry i didn't see your comment there, they don't all get into my notifications. I haven't heard of Savers, i had heard of another store called Poundland i think. Very nice find with the vintage trim xx
I have the Francis Perry Flowers of the world book. It is my favorite. What would I do with the cover when the pages are all gone? It is so big and really thick. I have so many books and need to organize them all together. I am thinking about putting them in one cabinet in the garage. I have 3 cabinets full. I used to have tubs. It makes a big difference when you can find what you are looking for. Thank you for your videos...love your style!
Thank you Laura, wow that is awesome you have so many and wonderful to display them like that on shelves. I have mine all along my ikea kallax shelves at the top, they look lovely up there. @@TheMushroomMarket no I don't really, at the moment I have a really full household, and my 'crafting table ", which is in the lounge, is shared by everyone, and usually it's time consuming to set stuff up, and yep hindering creativity. Maybe you could use those boxes as project boxes (put everything you would like to use into one) and pit your tools in another one, that way you only need to get out a couple of boxes at a time. But that cart idea sounds great too.

I completely understand it to Julie, i do have some books i actually can't cut up, like a vintage mushroom book. They are very beautiful books, but i also like to enjoy them. You should hold onto yours, they are very beautiful to have even up on a shelf xxxx
How do you make your cut outs look professional? People buy the fancy ephemera packs(like Tim Holtz) and theyre thicker, some glossy...I often find the mag or book cut outs look juvenile if just glued in. Any tricks?
I'm not sure mine look professional, the backs on them usually have writing or pictures from the other side of the page. I don't back them either because they are usually going to be stuck down on a page anyway. They are generally just lovely images, so i think that's why they are so nice to look at. Some book pages are thicker than others, and some are glossy and some aren't, but they all look nice in the end xxx
Yes, magazine pages just seem flimsy....like photos of flowers, you fussy cut around them, glue them onto lace and handmade paper maybe ripped piece of corrugated cardboard, unless you use a silk rose , cardstock,or charm, the mag cut out just looks cheap( to me)@@traceyjackson84
Hi I’m one of your new subscribers. I’m going to start making junk journals to sell in my Etsy shop. I have a question that maybe you can help me with. Is cutting images from magazines or books to create journals copyright?
Hello. I was wondering if you could please give me the name of the publisher and author of the Australian Flower Garden Planner. I'd like to see if I can find a copy somewhere. Thank you. Great video on how you get your ephemera and such.

Big hugs back,
Kat =)

VERY SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS. ((HUGS))
Oooooh Sandra, 5 for $1 !! Wowza!! That's an amazing outlet you have there! Your collection must be amazing! 😍😍😍
Goodwill Outlet, there are two in Austin. The one near 71 is much bigger

Love the Tawny Frog Mouth. They look like a wise, fuzzy, faced, litle old man thinking deep thoughts whilst hiding in the trees. 💖
I love the bird and butterfly books, beautiful.
Thank you so much xx :)
I enjoy using the books as much as i enjoy looking at them, i love putting all the birds and florals together in packages. xxxx
I'm so in love with that flower garden planner! 😊
Its great isn't it! The pop out florals are fun, you can even use them as tabs or embellishment pieces xxx
Really enjoyed this look into your stash of papers! I think you are very lucky. I always look for these kind of things too, but here in Sweden they're even more rare than where you are it seams.
Thank you so much for watching, i'm really surprised that it is rare also in Sweden! Do you look in the thrift shops over there?? xx
Love these books! I buy multiples too! I guess we like something so much we buy it twice! Who can remember all the goodies we have in our stash! 😊
How can you pass up a gorgeous book if you only have 1! lol. I would buy them over and over if they were something i really loved and used often. xxxx Thanks so much for watching Janice
Always fun to watch. Our Library has sales and I love to stock up. Sometimes I have to make a copy because I love the picture so much. LOL
Oh yes library sales are good, generally our library sales only have new books, not books like i'm after. Making a copy is a good idea! xxx
This video was an absolutely joyful experience, packed with useful books 📚 now I’m on the hunt for a few! I need to go to more book fairs/festivals

Hi Maureen, yes its nice to enjoy them also, i have a lot i have not cut into and some i won't also, it just depends. Thanks so much for watching xxx

Im stuck on collecting stuff that I want to use for various things, but I can't get started. Do you have a specific place to do your crafting? I need help getting direction I think.
Thank you so much Louisa, that is really lovely of you to say, i'm so glad i come across as clear in what i'm saying. Yes i do have a specific place for crafting, but it is in the middle of my house between the kitchen and hallway so its sort of in the middle of a thoroughfare. @@TheMushroomMarket no I don't really, at the moment I have a really full household, and my 'crafting table ", which is in the lounge, is shared by everyone, and usually it's time consuming to set stuff up, and yep hindering creativity. Some fantastic books ....but I’m one of those people I buy them then can’t bring myself to destroy them so end up donating them back . But enjoy yourself with them tfs x
Do you mean they look juvenile once glued into your project? Maybe try inking the edges a bit.
I like the old book pages with a natural, old patina. I like to add them to cardstock with my sewing machine or liquid glue.
I do that too but you cant make a journal just out of that, but I thank you for your suggestions. @@traceyjackson84
What about copyrights? My understanding is that only books from 1923 or older are in the public domain. Lovely work!
Every country varies in copyright, but i'm not copying these images in anyway, i'm using the originals x
I can't find an author anywhere on the book, it just has contributors Ethne Clark, and A Phoebe Phillips Editions Book. Hope that helps Ruth xx
Hi Ruth, if you are in America, there is a U.S. version on Ebay right now for $12.39 - free shipping... it is item #382575463282

Katherine Larini Thank you so much for the eBay information, Katherine. I went and purchased the book there. 😊
excellent!!! enjoy!!!
@@tiasmom6225 So glad you got one! Its an awesome and unique book xx
I buy these books too, but I scan and print pages, rather than cut them up. That way a beautiful book stays in my library and I can print the scans and use them more than once. Being a complete book lover, I like the idea of saving them for future generations. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for watching xx
Do you back your bird cut outs as they look more like cardboard when you place them in your pockets
No i don't back them, sometimes some of the bird images are cut out from books that have a sturdier page xx
When you use a book page on a cover, do you Mod Podge ir to protect it!
Yes usually Matte mod lodge xxx
The Mushroom Market thank you! Isn’t the Internet amazing? That I can have a conversation with you, a person with a shared interest in journals whom I’ve never met, in Australia from my home in the United States!
@@kessell637 Its a wonderful way to connect, even for me because i'm just here by my lonesome crafting lol xxx

Hi Avril, thank you so much for watching, i'm glad you enjoyed watching xxx - Sarah
In case you want to use an image more than once you can scan the image.
Yes, a lot of people have been saying that, and i will defiantly do that with some books that i haven't had the heart to cut into. Thank you so much Connie x
I am new to junk journals. I did watch a RUclips video on copyright laws. You may want to check that out before making copies.
@@ginacox466 Thanks, but anything that i may scan is only for personal use anyway, i have no intention to sell any scanned book images x
Thank you for the information. Like I said I'm new to this.
