Dear Ghosts,
It's my first time doing a documentary. I used the xt3 as a B cam, and that led to a few problems. I originally intended this to be open gate because I think that format is really fun. I don't think 2:39 letterbox is particularly humorous so i knew from the get-go I wanted a different format. Then when i went to shoot i realized that the xt3 can't shoot open gate so i ended up with the typical 4k DCI. Since i can only use flog1 on the xt3 i ended up clipping some highlights. Regarding documentary style lighting i find natural lighting to be more lighthearted. When I used the the Amaran 200D i put it directly above at a 30% angle, but i think maybe a normal 60% angle would have been better and less dramatic. Another thing to note about documentaries is they always have the person of interest on the right side of the screen. I don't know why that is. I wonder if in Japan they would reverse that direction. I personally find that right-side interviewee just feels right and when i recollected on other interview and dialogue formats, i think it's also mostly the same. I wonder about the psychology of it. If i were to put feelings to words I think having a subject on the left often feels more like an aggressor stance. The exception is late night and live TV where they have the host on the right and the interviewee on the left. What are your thoughts?
