One of the greatest songs Billy Joel has ever written. From a veteran. Thanks Billy.
For all and every vet out there, who has endured, existed and who has returned with the burden of brethren left behind Those you fought for, no matter how screwed up the "logic", the political rhetoric and simply bullsh^t that was vomited from the mouths of politicians - I salute you ALL, with immense humbleness and complete understanding. Please guys, be at peace!
Respect from 🇬🇧 .. ✌️

I play this to all my young friends, it explains why we went, why some of us survived, some didn't. Damn near 50 years and it seems like yesterday.
would that we learned something...
From a UK fighting man to a US fighting man. God bless you, I hope you're at peace brother.
God bless you guys
Thank you for your service
Straight up......one of the greatest songwriters of all time. So underrated! and this is one of his best ever!
That was beautiful. The original recording is one thing, but live you can really feel the emotion; he really means every word he sings and man is it powerful. It captures the sorrow and the brotherly love of Vietnam, of friends who fought and often died or “went down” together. It’s sad but the chorus is so empowering. One of my favourite live performances of the song for sure. In a word: Inspirational
they heard the hum of our motors, they counted the rotors, and waited for us to arrive. I did that for 336 straight days behind an M60 before they sent me home. I still see the small arms fire from the LZ's, never got hit, came close, still wake up at night, some brothers didn't get home. This song haunts me.
Thank you so very much for your service!!❤❤❤
Thank you for your service Sir. God Bless❤
I was a kid. I was scared. I couldn't wait to get out of there.
@@jesseflower9802 I can’t even imagine. I have the utmost respect for all our men who have served. I’m glad you made it home.
I love that this channel uploads the live versions of his hits
It's uploading each song from all of his officially-released concerts on video, like TONIGHT from 1976, Live from Long Island in 1982 and A Matter of Trust in 1987.
Agreed
First time I saw him perform this live was in Norfolk, VA in 1984 while I was serving in the U.S. Air Force. Brought us to tears with his passion. So poignant...even today.
I was blessed to see Billy Joel live times in concert, once at Veterans Stadium in Philly with Elton John. This song is Joel's tribute to our Military in a War that was unpopular. Quit with the negative comments.
a truly beautiful song. never fails to make me tear up.
As brilliant as Billy Joel is, and with as many great songs as he's done, this is hands down his best song. It's powerful, brilliant, tragic, and honest all at the same time. It's entirely possible to hate war and love the soldier at the same time. Remember, most of them were kids that were drafted and sent into Hell on Earth. They were sent to fight a war that they didn't start (the politicians started it) and did what they had to do. They earned every tribute they have gotten.
So Well said, Craig.
Billy the man is a living legend. He is extremely talented. Still love his music today.
I saw him perform this live cried the whole way I don't know how he got thought the song!
One of the most heart jerking and tear inducing songs ever. Thank you all who have served and sacrificed for this country. God bless you all.
What an incredibly emotive song. Never ceases to hit the point.
Man that rips to my Heart in 2023 Badass Billy N Crew AND SOME
The whole song is a masterpiece, but 3:08 and 5:26 gives me chills
You NEVER hear moving awesome songs like this anymore! Just loads of stylish productions with no soul...
Fantastic tribute to the Vietnam Vets. Look at the drummer, he’s pounding the drums as if he were a grunt himself.
Raw brilliant and tragic in one song. A classic
Liberty Devito is jamming! 👍👍👍
Great drummer
I wonder if those drums and cymbals ever forgave him? Haha. Absolutely brutal attack and yet such an amazing feel for the music. He gives it 100% always.
Wow. I'm so happy to come across this. I was a kid, and taped this on my vhs on first choice. I'm 46 now and this is still one of my favorites of all time. Thank you for your music. Everyone involved. And the crew
This concert is a 10
Powerful performance
This song cuts you in deep, it’s so heavy...
On a technical note: if you watch closely this looks like footage from one or more different performances (on the same tour) synced to another live audio recording (the one released on the album). It has been masterfully done but you might notice the edit avoids all but brief shots of Billy while he's singing. One tell begins at 2:55. On 'We held on to each other...' in the closer front facing shot of Billy he begins to reach out with his left hand and arm. Then it cuts to a wider side shot of him at the piano and he is not reaching out.
Also, the footage looks like it was shot yesterday. Speaks volumes about shooting things on film in the 80s and 90s before hi-def was even thought of.
Those sounds of helicopters shook me when I first heard this song at age 5. It was a very CLEAR description of terror and suffering-- and strength-- that stuck with me.
This song is a master piece hands down. I remember this tour. I think it was 1987/8 BJ was one of the First to tour behind the iron curtain after the Wall Fell.. It was an amazing time.
This was in 1987. The wall fell in late 1989.
What a beautiful show and music... Billy Joel can touch my soul deep!💗🎶🎹
A song that is exquisitely written and a version that is exquisitely performed. The essential version. 🤘❤🤘
Спасибо вам за эти легендарные выступления и за доверие!
Thank you, mr.Joel, for your love, energy and devotion!
Were any of you there for this concert?? Or alive when it happened?? What was the over all public sediment regarding Billy playing in the USSR? Did this event have any influence on Soviet citizens attitude or mindset towards the west/USA?? I still can’t believe this happened, would love to hear feedback from people that were living in Soviet Union during this time or at this concert.
A true masterpiece - I reckon this is one of the best war songs ever written
I was too young for the Vietnam conflict, but was involved in the first and second gulf war. The thankless disrespectful way those vets were treated is why my generation received so much love for our efforts. This song grabs me and makes me feel, as much as possible for someone not there, what the common foot soldier must have felt. It also speaks about how the Vietcong were resilient. It's also NOT preachy. It admits that maybe the US was wrong or maybe right, but in the heat of battle it matters little. This is by far the most passionate and emotional song I have ever heard from Billy Joel. AND he gave the subject the respect it was due.
It's a song that made me think about war when I was young
This song is so good one of his best
😢 I've already lost Aunt to murder in 1993, Mom to illness in 2001 now I've got 2 Uncles fighting Agent Orange. I've just won my battles with health issues. I'm trying to get $ to bring everyone to concert in Oct. for my birthday.
Good luck!
...not to be rude but why are you saying this on the comment section of a live performance of Goodnight Saigon in the USSR from 1987?
@@nothanks9978 XD
The Viet Nam War ended more than ten years before I was born, but whenever this song comes on, I can't help but belt out "AND WE WOULD AAALLLLLL GO DOOOOWWWWN TOGETHERRRRRR".
What a deep Soul .....🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
God Bless Davey lost in Vietnam,, 52 years gone, you are always loved and remembered
Awesome 👏
The Best Singer
, thanks You Mr. Billy
Just one word Brilliant.
Best song about Vietnam war
Interesting also for anyone present that understood the lyrics, being in Moscow
Its not about Vietnam War. It's about the men who fought
@@patapon646 Yeah, in the Vietnam War.
Masterpiece
Yes we will all go down together 🤠😜😊
Il migliore ... Piano MAN ... Talento Musicalità ... Completo !
what a song!!!
Increadable voice 😋💕💕
Super como siempre 👏
This had been one of my least favorite songs by him, and I was gonna skip it until I saw a featured comment saying "he doesn't know what to do with his hands". So I stayed to see what that would look like 😅. But I'm glad I did. What an amazing performance! His passion during this song really transformed the lyrics for me in a meaningful way. Wow.
OIF/OEF airforce crew chief veteran mechanic, and this is one of the songs we would listen to alot before going over. Doubtful the younger generation(even though that is technically me) even younger will ever understand. Some of us do not run, except to find our fellow soldiers first.👌🙏 This song is great.🤞
Did three tours to Iraq and one to Afghanistan. Here in NC one of the nicest things I had seen was a live band a few weeks ago going into the Kernersville facility. Nice to see veterans finally smiling a bit.
GENIOUS!!!!!!!!!
Good Night Billy ❤
Der Drummer von Mr Joel ist das fleischgewordene "Biest" der Muppets Show!... unglaublich der Mann! 🥁🥁🥁🔊🔊👍👍👍👍
I love the shots of Russel javors at the beginning

Billy Joel is complete singer compositor pianist
DAMN. Beautiful. Never forget. #UncleDan #Nam
Liberty Is a boss.
ヘリの音に戦争のリアルが伝わってたまに聴いてます。
War is a stupid matter.
Interesting that he played this song in the Soviet Union...who was on the opposite side of the US in Vietnam. Still a great fuckin' song though.
it could be a statement ig, i think its kickass
💜💜💜
Billy - how about bringing back Liberty to play the last show at the Garden? I just met him a week ago - such a great drummer and when I mentioned playing one more time I could sense how much that would mean to him!
“They left their childhood on every acre”

☝️😎Billyさん、大丈夫ですよ。まだ悲観的ではない!
The Vietnam war stupidity in six minutes, well done Mr Joel.
Michael Baucom You cannot sum up the deaths of 58,000 men who fought n died for their country with the word stupidity. You are a sick fuck!
@@Me-yh4uc you're a funny guy aren't you?:)
@@tihenbalop Piss off, hippie!
Chuck M Criticizing a war doesn’t have to equate to criticizing the men who fought. That’s small-minded.
@@Me-yh4uc The stupidity was those 58,000 deaths were unnecessary but that part seems to have gone over your head.
billy, you chenged a rambo from rocky!
What is that audio
Why isn’t the intro and explanation he gave about the song to the crowd included in this video??? Shame
Who are the four guys singing?
Vietnam veterans. ♡
His road crew
@@marinfamily2010 Perhaps members of his road crew who were also veterans?
So many of these young Russians could relate, having just returned from Afghanistan.

The Moral of This Song : When GOD Blesses You with a Talent , Don't sell out and abuse your gift , because just as The Lord giveth , The Lord can taketh away too ! ! !
Hello. Public release.
I still can’t believe he fired his drummer because he didn’t like hi latest wife! Billy this is number 6 for you and he had been with you longer than all your wives put together. Straighten UP!
holy pstd, batman...........

I think the drummer went overboard with the cymbals at the end it sounded like noise
what? what cymbals? that’s always how they’ve performed it.
Pretty subversive given that any number of the audience probably knew soldiers in Afghanistan at the time.
Irony of fate, now unfortunately the young Russians have become cannon fodder- Goodnight Kyiv!
