    *Great little trolling motor **enjoyable.fishing** recommend had it hooked up to my 15 foot old town canoe and it pushed it pretty good with me and my son (220 pounds each).*

    As a Special Operations Vet with a missing lower left leg. It would be hard for me to get back in on windy days, without a motor. Anything that allows you to fish better and not make it such "work", I'm all for it. Thanks bro.

    Hello Ron. Really good video. Good explanation where you were able to purchase the components, how you designed and set up the drive motor, and the details to fabricate a very practical addition to the kayak. And yes, just as you mentioned, not everyone may agree with regards to having an electric drive motor in a kayak. But that is okay. It is their choice to what they would like to do. Not only will it get you to where the fishing is, but having an electric drive motor could help make the day on the water for some recreational time a lot easier. You may not have to go home tired at the end of the day. So, if anyone chooses to have an electric drive motor on their kayak, your video just made the project so much simpler. Great video and narrative. Thank you for your time. Aloha! K Inouye Honolulu, Hawaii

    Hey bro, love the kayak. 95% of kayaks are motorized. It's just how far we've come. I purchased my HOODOO 120 PDL, HYBIRD edition. This is my 1st Yak and last. I see no reason to upgrade. My kayak has a 46lb thrust trolling motor, weighs 20 lbs, and also has the motor gauge, on top of letting me know, how much batt life is left. It's made, especially for my kayak, to drop in and mount, exactly where the PDL would sit. I fish a 8600 acre lake, and next year planning on 8 tournaments. Been fishing all my life off the bank. I did order my J2 BIXPY MOTOR, which I'll mount on my vibe gravity rudder. So I'll have a choice of what motor to use, or if I have issues with one I have my bixpy, and you're not losing a rudder. Some tournamants your up against bass boat's. So I don't feel one bit guilty about setting up my vessel to cover water, conserve energy, fish hands free, and it's beautiful out in your spots. True therapy and and serenity out in any body if water. Be safe my friend..🤟🙏🎣

    Great vid Ron! I believe I've fished a few KATS tournaments with you. I've been building these Hobie motors for my customers for a while now just using the Sevylor and Watersnake brands. I may consider using this Prowler in the future for the non DIY'ers. Question, Is it rated for the salt? A lot of my customers want something more powerful when fishing the bays etc.. Anyway, I'm not going to the Kentucky tourney this year so good luck out there. I'm sure that motor will be a huge help during pre-fishing. Take care

    • @RonChampion
      @RonChampion  9 лет назад

      +VentureTube Thanks Brother... The salt question I asked the man at Bass Pro and he said its not a salt water version but the way its sealed he said the motor would burn up before the salt got to it.. For $100 I was willing to take that chance.. I will let everyone know if I have any issues.. Thanks

  • @bcapollo1

    Hi Ron, Great video, you have incorporated some of the ideas I was thinking about so it was great to see your approach prove out. The Conceal was one great idea I didn't think about! Im just about to make my purchase for a Prowler 30 on a Hobe PA17 Tandem mainly in Salt Water. I understand that the prowler is rated for fresh wter but I have seen enough comments to know it will be OK if I add a Zinc which will be my high point shaft stop and conformal coat the PC board for corrosion protection and wash it down after every use. Here are my questions:
    1) What is the shaft diameter that Im adding my zinc to?
    2) What is the amperage draw at speed 1 and 5
    3) What is your deep cycle battery amp hr rating and how much time are you getting out of it? I will also be using a Minnkota battery box and powering a Lowrance Hook 4 and charging a phone.
    Again, great detailed video, Thanks

    Man great vid brother I’ve been waiting for this to pop up. I was just about to bite the bullet for the evolve but luckily I did not. Come to find out it’s not going to give near the run time as this set up and waaayyyy overpriced! Plus they’ll eventually kick these motors out of tournaments. Hell I am building my first ever kayak. Never actually even been in one but have fished tournament trails for years. Just no interest in big run and gun tournaments any longer. Time to slow down and start enjoying fishing again. I feel the kayak will do just that. But with two back surgeries under my belt and loss of feeling in my leg it’s smart for me to have the power but I will be utilizing the drive as well for the exercise.
    Please post when you choose a battery and get some specs on run time please sir. Hope to run into you down here in the lone star state or elsewhere in one of these tournaments. Still haven’t chosen which to fish yet.
    Good luck brother and Tight Lines !

Their motors are amazing and the battery life is unmatched.The main thing was to show a budget option and this setup workd great for what it is.. Best of Luck on the water

    One comment and a question. Comment: one person who did something like this cut two pieces of hard plastic, cutting board type plastic, an glued them on top and bottom of cassette to make it more rigid/string. I may do the same. Perhaps just on top; not sure yet. Question: to connect the metal shaft to the black housing at the top, requires a lateral hole to be drilled in the pipe with the wires. How did you drill that hole after you cut the shaft???? Without hurting the wires....thanks! Great video.

    Making the motor insert to be snug fit with zero tolerance, wouldn't be hard to remove it fast when the bottom of kayak is hitting ground?

    Did you have problem taking the trolling motor in and out of the Hobie drive opening?

    • @RonChampion
      @RonChampion  8 лет назад

      You have to tilt the whole head unit to get the foot in the hole.. Thats why I think anything any larger than this trolling motor will not work.. The foot is almost too long, so that's the reason for tilting it... But it works really well.. Thanks

    Hey Ron, I did the same thing to my Hobie side-kick outriggers (add that type of foam), so I'd never have to worry about the consequences of losing air in my amas, and I encountered the same type of incomplete expansion, and runny residue. What I discovered is that the foam needs air/oxygen to expand properly, and at least with this brand of expanding foam, putting it into an enclosed cavity without the introduction of air also, will yield the same failure to expand as desired. Just thought you'd like to know. I'd also like to know if there IS a brand that dudes like you and me can get that works like we want it to with 100% expansion/rigidity. Any hobbyists out there that know of any?

    • @RonChampion

    Ron that's a great job you did on your PA14. I've got a 2014 model PA14. I'm considering the same set up as you have. One question. What type of battery was or is your final choice for your set up? Did you go with a full size deep cycle battery? Your input would really be helpful. Keep up the good work and Thank You!!

    • @RonChampion
      @RonChampion  8 лет назад

      I still have not bought a large battery as of yet... The Lithium Batteries are the best option due to the weight if you dont mind spending the money.. I know a couple other guys using a deep cycle battery and getting alot longer run time.. That will probably be the option I use as a backup.. I know have a Torqeedo and will be doing a video on it sometime in the near future.. Thanks so much and hope this helps...

    Noticed you cut !0" from top of shaft, which also contains the holes that attach shaft to motor. How do you reconnect shaft back to motor?

    Ron great video. Do you know if this will fit a Hobie Outback 2016. I want to buy and install it on my outback. Thanks. P.S. I have a Bass Yak set up on my Hobie Proangler 14 and love it. However, I want to keep it simple and cheap on my new Hobie Outback.

      It should fit no problem... The Hole were the drive goes is he same size.. If the cassette from the PA will fit in the Outback then this trolling motor will fit for sure... Thanks Brother

    Great video. It is a little too loud for me. At the lower speeds, it sounds like a jet engine. Your set-up is also illegal as is out here in California either fresh or salt water. But it is very interesting Thanks.

    1.7 mph is too fast to troll with at your lowest setting. Maybe 30 HP is too powerful for the PA14.

    Think you should make your video shorter and more interesting faster, a little bit booring with all the talk, more action imo.:) great idea all over, have a nice day.:)
