Its not just Zen that says you should bring all of your actions into the practice, the Noble Eight-fold Path is essentially saying you should be mindful in all situations. Zen however has far longer periods of meditation than most Buddhist Schools, expect perhaps the most traditional of Theravada such as the Thai Forest Tradition.
Zen is influenced by both Indian budhism and daoism, so putting these two things together you have a good practice for the monks, but by also focusing on the idea of wuwei (effortless action) and a practice of zazen Zen can have a good effect on you. But yes I think Sadhguru is right and I myself am zen budhist. But if you read the work of Hui neng you can also have the conception of enlightenment always there to be suddenly realized in a sudden. If I were advising anyone on zen I would recomend Hui neng who also said you dont need to be a monk in a monastary to become enlightened.🙏🙏
'Introduction To Zen' by D.T. Suzuki is a great book. This book was read by Carl Jung too. Zen is a great way of living but it is not easy too practice. Sadhguru very beautifully explained it.
Zen is not effective unless the practice is contentious, 24/7. Like he said. Zen is not effective unless the practicer understands zen, how does one understand zen? Well who's asking? Once one understands zen, Everything is a lesson in zen. If that frustrates/confuses you bc you really want to know....you know what this is all about! Then I can tell you if you are a sincere seeker that wants to find truth, not a fake seeker who will reject truth when it doesn't suit him, but a sincere one who wants to know! you'll find the way soon enough.
@stonedrenched The isha and Zen comes under Karma yoga. Karma yoga is not a concept, it is the way of natural life of human being. one should surrender (without any force by others) to the guru. By this surrender one can free from ego. then one can start their spiritual life without ego. so any foundations like isha or zen is the place to come out from ego.that's it
Great initiative from our Sadhguruji.....Great response and easily can know about wt we are doing by Making Isha .... It's all about our spiritual way that's all ....
Well, it obvious that Sadhguru is well aware of the Zen nature. Here is a gentleman well aware of the knowledge that many would wish to attain. This awareness lives well enough in him that it comes alive in his expression. One short meditation that Sadhguru narrates is, "As I breath in, 'I am not this body, as I exhale, I am not even this mind." The meditation continues with simple breathe mindfulness. You can take from this, just what is this apart from mind that we live as real, even those that speak always of no mind, live an expression of their mind. So yes, Sadhguru knows his Zen.
With due respect, Sadguru says in this video that following the breath is not by feeling it, but there are other ways to do it. What is that other way ? He's not cleat. Zen is about clarity. Sadguru shows lack of it by talking in circles. Pls ask urself at the end of this video what is the useful information that u get ?
@@pradyumn2692 Clarity is a good notion. One is well advised to let the mud settle so that one can see. There is however the way to clarified vision is to confront one’s confusion and paradox. There is the notion that Zen calls for due diligent to practice as a monk. From that we can be assured the novice does not embody the necessary function of Zen. In response to the inquiry as what I got from Sadhguru’s video; not much. I already appreciate Sadhguru as an individual and he does follow the tenets of Hinduism. Sadhguru does chat about other religions and practices in a positive way with respect. About your point of Sadhguru talking in circles: pls look to your on lack of clarity. I do practice looking to see what is truly implied when someone makes a suggestion. Any confusion resides here first and I must address my understanding. One thing I have heard people say is, “Don’t believe a damned thing I say”. Take the words in to entertain the subject, our internal dialogue is predigested and that is our measure of the dialogue.
2:39 Buddha didn't call breathing meditation as satipattana. In fact buddha called it anapan vabna. Satipattana is another kind of meditation like vipassana. Buddhist know it well.
I disagree, Zen is not something that can be learned or practised; it is not a system. Zen is the non-time bound aspect of meditation. There is no movement of time in zen.
I agree that Zen is the opposite of accumalation of knowlege but many westerners get confused with this concept and dont fully understand the true power of zen.
@stonedrenched There may be much in zen but what sadhguru explaining was the concepts of zen is not new to the Indian culture. we are following that from ages and ages.
Siddhartha gautam is the real name of buddha. There is meaning of word buddha explained by sadh guru check it out. Siddhartha gautam was born in lumbini nepal. He was seeking one place to another place and learning about yoga with yogis. He himself was not doing meditation. He was learning from many gurus going from one place to aother place. At last he got enlightment in anciant india.
So if zen requires a whole lifestyle system to be effective, what other options are available aside from zen? And if watching the breath is the most rudimentary meditation, what other ways can we meditate?
To be fair, the "Prana" and "Qi" are two VERY different conceptualization of the breath, and you cannot completely erase Taoist and Chinese Alchemist effects on Chang/Zen as it entered and permeated the Far East.
I'm new to this and very confused. Isn't the person asking the question making a comparison between pranayama and Zen and thus making a reductive, sweeping characterization of the latter? I thought shikantaza was an example of practice from the Zen tradition that might be at odds with forms of 'meditation' (including pranayama and some of the others) that preceded it. But I don't know. Maybe someone else does?
Just talking in circle without saying anything. 1. zen is 800-1200 years old but Adiyogi system is older than that. So just bcoz one is older how is it superior ? 2. How is meditation a dimension ? Definition of dimension is not clear. 3. If both Isha and Zen are designed to change life, why cant u say the goal of both are same ? why talk in circles ? 4. He said there are other ways of following the breath, what is that "other way" should we pay to know ?
This Sadhguru seems to know about everything but Buddhism. He says watching the breath was called Sathipattana by Buddha. Which is completely wrong.! Sathipattana is a complicated technique incorporating 4 subdivisions which again may include a vast number of meditation methods. The meaning of Sathipattana is establishing conciousness. And same goes for Dhyana. While the word might be the same there is a dramatic difference between Buddhist and HIndu Dhyanas. HIndu dhyana appears as only one step in ashtanga yoga. BUt in Buddhist dhyana there are 8 stages in Dhyana itself.
There are many types of yoga and different ways. Buddha just got sucess or enlightened in one part of the yoga.Buddha's yoga is the only one brach of a tree and the branch have many leafs. Yo must understand.

The good thing about Sadhguru is that although he is an enlightened person (and I do believe he is), he makes mistakes, he has opinions that are infected by his pride, his prejudices, etc. I think this was a bad answer, but that's ok. He's human, and humans are not right all the time, even the enlightened ones.
