  • From 2015 to 2019, an average of 5,470 collisions happened every year in Indiana work zones. Specifically, there were 14 deaths and 650 injuries in 2018, and 25 deaths and 805 injuries in 2019.
In an effort to protect road workers, researchers at Purdue University and INDOT have deployed Indiana's first driverless work zone vehicle. The vehicle will follow a human-operated lead vehicle and provide a safety barrier for road workers to work in between.
