Speaking in tongues means only speaking in another language. Why cant you guys see it as plain as it is? it can only edify myself, because only i can understand the language. But in church, or when there are others around, some may not understand the language that i am speaking, and thus not be edified. That is why when i preach in Chinese, and knowing there are some among the congregation who understands English, I will invite a interpreter to translate so that they can also be edified.
When i pray by myself, sometimes i pray in my dialect, as it better expresses myself. I can speak in Chinese, Cantonese, Hokkien, Malay, and English.
But the gift of speaking in tongues, that is in the Bible, it was a supernatural gift, in that the person has never learnt it before. That is why the gift is for the unbelieving, so they will wonder and listen to the message that the apostle preaches. The gift is not necessary for us, as we have already believed.

Also says tongues will cease. And from 58 ad to the close of the Canon in about 97Ad there's no speaking in tongues... Tongues were a sign to Jews who are, you says it.. UNBELIEVERS..
I like Davids teachings but he last me hear and I don't feel this teaching was very good..

Very refreshing preaching on the Gift of Tongues. I already knew and believed in everything you said, but it is sure is good to hear it preached. I cannot understand why there are Christians who do not accept this as it is plainly revealed in the Bible. It is for our benefit. I pray in the Holy Spirit all the time in private for all the reasons you mentioned and am uplifted and edified by our Lord Jesus when I do. Sometimes I sing in the Holy Spirit as well. Unfortunately, most churches don't exercise the gift of tongues in the church gathering even though they believe in the tongues. This is for church edification as you said. What a shame. By the way, when I got baptized, I seriously sought the Lord to fill me with the Holy Spirit but it took a week before it happened. It happened when I least expected it. I was driving in my car on the freeway this night and just speaking to God in English, not thinking about tongues at all. All of a sudden, this unknown language blurted out of my mouth. I knew it was the Holy Spirit and I remember thinking, Jesus really is alive and the Bible IS true. It was the most beautiful experience. That was about 30 years ago and I still pray in the Holy Spirit.

      That's a beautiful testimony!
I so agree with you that this is a refreshing teaching. It seems most people are either "If you don't speak in tongues, you don't have the Spirit," or "tongues is not for today." But there is a balance way to do this.
I also spoke in tongues the first time during a season of seeking to be more filled with the Spirit. I didn't know what in the world was happening and went back to English but when it started again I knew it was God. He is so good!!

I had the exact same experience, I always answered the call tone filled in church but it just didn’t work, so I decided to pray on my own then about a week later, it literally came out like a dragon spitting fire, and I kept shout, God is real God is real. Most amazing experience of my life. Thank you Jesus

Pastor David, I have heard countless teachings on the gift of tongues, but yours is the best by far. I am a Bible teacher, and one of my readers messaged me from her hospital bed yesterday as she is very ill with the Covid virus. Her sister told her that she must learn to speak in tongues, and she asked for my opinion. I told her that I do speak in tongues, but I don't teach on them because of the divisiveness the subject causes among believers. Thank you for having the courage to teach on this controversial topic. I am praying for you!

I asked God in February 1977 shortly after I had been saved to fill me with his spirit and to give me the gift of languages. In 1 Corinthians 14;5 Paul says: "I wish you all spoke with tongues." So does God. I didn't feel anything and I didn't get any words in my mind. I realized that I had to step out by faith and I had start to talk in this new unknown language that was so strange to my mind. Acts 2;4: "And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." They had to begin speaking. And so had I. It wasn't the emotional experience that I had expected and wanted. It was even somehow dry. Actually I had been a little disapointed. But soon this gift has proven to be a big enrichment for my prayerlife. And it is a blessing to me since more than 42 years.
I am a German and hope I have found the right English words so that you can understand what I want to explain.

I was a missionary to China and traveled between US and China. One time I was ina young house church. That night there was a false prothesis there with helper. One young man began to cures us in Chinese. It was interpreted to me. I began to rebuke him in English. I thought my interpreter would tell him, but she did not. Then I heard the sister next to me explain that I was speaking Chinese. I did not know it, but God wanted the people to know this was false and actually God used it to strengthen that young church and out of them came some faithful workers. That was the first time and last time God used that gift in my life.

Recently I have been so blessed listening to a group of preachers who clarified a lot of difficult bible passages based on the Word of God alone. They stressed repeatedly that the holy Bible is all sufficient for the Christian believer. All was well until I hear them teaching that miracles and tongues ceased after ali the apostles have died. I was rather distressed and sad that they couldn't see those verses that you Ps David used to explain the gift of tongues which I already know. I thank the Holy Spirit for leading me to your well balanced teaching on tongues which is like the master key to other spiritual treasures. I must pray in tongues for my cessationists preachers whom I have high regards for their great bible knowledge. We all know who our real enemies are indeed.

Thanks David. So much damage has been done in the christian church by people saying you should have the gift of tongues. That's entirely up to GOD ......not us. Its like me saying I want the gift of being a preacher. Gifts are given by GOD ....FOR GOD. We shouldnt be demanding God to give us anything. He gives as He chooses...as He sees fit ....for His own reasons not ours.

My husband's family kept telling me I had to speak in tongues. It really bothered me because I didn't speak in tongues. One day I told the Lord that I am just going to believe I'm saved, and I didn't concern myself with it again. About a week or so later, as I was kneeling down to pray, I started speaking in tongues before my knees even hit the floor. It was a huge surprise. I realized that it isn't about the evidence of salvation, but about the absolute assurance in the Gospel of salvation. Seeking a sign you are saved is unbelief.

He brought up points like tongues is speaking to God not men that I have believed for years but so many don’t agree based on Acts 2 it’s good to know I’m not alone....also brought up some points I’ve not considered like the 120 may not all have been speaking a language the people understood and that Peter would have been speaking Greek to the larger audience. Pastor, this is so timely for me. I have a dear friend going to a Baptist Church. He and his wife just accepted Jesus’ work on the cross about a year ago. The under pastor meets with them once a week to teach them one-on-one. For some reason he started in the Old Testament. Because my friend asked me to, I attended a few Sundays.
I spoke with their Pastor on the phone about being involved with the church. I not only speak in tongues, but have been give the gifting of a seer and prophecy. I was told I couldn’t really be involved in the church, certainly not a member, unless I didn’t use my gifts. Ah, I refused! My friend doesn’t understand because he knows next to nothing about the New Testament! And, it will be awhile before he gets there. I’ve explained as best I can why I can’t/won’t attend church with him. This sermon you preached will be going out to him today! I have never heard the gift of tongues spoken of so eloquently and succinctly as you’ve just done! Thank you for your readiness to listen to our Lord! Blessings!

I believe a lot of confusion among believer concerning speaking in tongues involves two basic truths:
    1) In the original Greek that the N.T. was written in our English word " tongues" isn't plural but singular and means " another language" and " a language.
    2) Speaking in " tongues" as the first evidence that a believer has recieved the Holy Spirit and the born again believers prayer language doesn't technically fit Pauls' definition of a gift of the Spirit because it doesn't edify anyone but the speaker. The gift of speaking in "tongues" always works together with a believer with the gift of interpretation.
Not all believers have the gift of speaking in " tongues" for the purpose of interpretation, but all speak in " tongues" and have the private prayer language as the result of being born of the Spirit.

    • @DavidGuzikEnduringWord

1 Corinthians 14:5 seems to indicate that not every Believer speaks in tongues. Paul was wishing that they did, but apparently, they didn't/
1 Corinthians 14:5 I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; [a]for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

@@DavidGuzikEnduringWord Thanks for the reply. In 1Cor ch.12 and 14 Paul is speaking of the gifts of the Holy Spirit (1Cor.12:1). First of all as far as speaking in tongues, in the original Greek that the N.T. was written in, our English word " tongues" is singular not plural and means " another language" and " a language.
Speaking in " tongues" has two operations:
      1) The first evidence that a believer has recieved the Holy Spirit ) Acts 2, 10, and ch 19) and the born again believers' private prayer language for self edification ( 1Cor.14:14)
      2) The gift of speaking in " tongues" which is always to be accompanied by a believer with the gift of interpretation of " tongues" for the edification of a church gathering.( 1Cor.12:7)
All do not recieve the ability of speaking in " tongues" for the purpose of being interpreted.
However all do speak in "tongues" as the initial confirmation that they have recieved the Holy Spirit and as their private prayer language for self edification. So technically operation one doesn't qualify as one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit as Paul defines them because it only edifies the speaker.

A German speaking pastor talks at an American church, therefore he must have an interpreter to translate! But if the German pastor spoke with glossolalia (tongues, in a German dialect-lol) the Americans in the church would have been lost.
It never happened! Speaking in tongues (glossolalia, the babble of pagans, or supposed saints) never happened, many ancient peoples spoke multiple languages and dialects, how many languages did St. Paul know? maybe Greek, Hebrew, Latin, more?
Could Paul speak in other tongues which we call languages (xenoglossia)--the answer is yes! Did he speak in other tongues? yes for the sake of the gospel! we know many believers spoke in other languages too (you had to for the purpose of trade; for example today in Switzerland most swiss people speak 4 languages, German, French, Italian, English), so ancient people were able to communicate in other languages.

So what happens when many different languages are spoken together out loud? It probably sounds like babble. Surprisingly though if you are there in the midst of that babble you can hear somebody speaking English loud and clear, but the other languages sound like babble because you cannot understand the other languages, you know English therefore you hear what is said in English! Even in the middle of all the chatter.
Try this experiment if you can, go to a multicultural city where many languages are spoken. Find a crowded place where many people are speaking different languages at the same time. Listen to the "chatter" what do you hear? You only hear the language that you understand!!
This is what happened in Acts! It sounded like babble because everyone was speaking at the same time, but each heard their own language in the midst of all the chatter. UNDERSTAND! OK.
So Glossolalia is BS. The "sign" of speaking in tongues to the unbeliever is that believers care enough to speak the gospel out loud in their own language (LOVE and CARING are the sign!, not babbling) --there is no mystical "hyper ecstatic" overly emotional involuntary mental possession controlling your lips and tongue to speak--that's BS! But that's what Pentecostal charismatics believe.
So for you who had the patience to read this far "Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind". God allows you to be in control, your lips are not Gods puppet. He loves you because you choose to talk for Him (and to Him), not because he pulls the strings of your tongue and lips. He loves you when you desire to do His will on your own recognizance!

I don't understand, if it is a human language are you saying then if I speak to God in a tongue perhaps He will have me do it in Mandarin for breakfast, then for lunch, He prefers a feisty Spanish then finishing the day with a lite dose of French Canadian... I can't imagine God thinking that way, can you?
How about instead Pauls's teaching means possibly the following; tongues were an unknown non-human language, jibberish as some call it, you know the ashunda sekowe, un nanda....you get what I mean I hope
. I would agree to speak in another human language I didn't know at all would be a miracle, and I suspect that may well be a gift as well. But there are way too many passages that would rule out tongues just being human languages....if my inference or understanding is wrong so be it, but I think the argument is not without reason.
I realize this is an older video, so I doubt I will read any responses, I would love to discuss this further in a Godly fashion, but if nothing else for the moment I have got this issue "off my chest"

The tongues at Pentecost were supernaturally given to proclaim the Gospel to Jewish peoples who spoke many different languages but not the local tongues in Israel. They each hear the Gospel preached in their own tongue in which they were born. The tongues in 1 Corinthians are still known human tongues, but were being abused by the new church and Paul is writing to correct them and telling them not to use these unknown tongues {on the part of the hearer} unless there was an interpreter present and everyone was talking at the same time to make communications worse! If this was some heaven speak or god given angel talk then you have a situation of Paul usurping God's authority and regulating an act of God! Not very likely at all? Paul uses sarcasm or exaggeration, "Though I speak with tongues of men and angels but have not love, I am nothing" to point out it is out of love we preach/spread the Gospel to the lost!!!! Some have said this is a private prayer language so to conceal them from Satan. Really?, what language does he speak other than angel-ese, after all he's an angel himself! God bless!!!!!!

There is no Biblical evidence for or against a "non-human" tongue existing. Tongues is simply some form of communication from the Christian to God. There is no evidence
that says we need to hide our "tongues" from Satan. If that were the case, then none of us should ever pray in a human language. Paul may or may not have been using holy sarcasm, because he was clearly emphasizing the supremacy of love over the use of spiritual gifts.
      Thanks for sharing.

@@DavidGuzikEnduringWord The word "glossa" in Acts 2(known human languages is the very same word used in Paul's letter to Corinth. Chapter 14 includes the word unknown as an aid to the reader. It is clear that the reference unknown is to the hearer. The speaker does not speak to men (But to God, who understands), but in the spirit(the speakers spirit[the new spirit of the born again at salvation-lower case "s"]) never the less speaks mysteries(again to the hearer). Paul continues, "greater is he who prophesieth(declares, speaks) to those who understand(and are edified by their understanding), than those who speak in a human language which is not interpreted("except he interpret") that the "church receive edifying" [verse 4,5]. The interpretation is also a spiritual gift(1 Cor. 12:10). The spiritual gifts were always given for the benifit of the hearer/the church. The gift was not some unintelligible gibberish that some churches teach(I question why are they teaching a God given/God directed gift?) as some sign of spiritual achievment. That only glorifies self, not God, and feeds human pride, which causes God's hatred(Prov. 8:13) God bless you and Merry "Christ"mas. I have the story of a God given instance where the Biblical gift of tongues was observed, which I will be glad to tell you about if you wish in another reply. [I don't want to wear out my welcome!]

Acts 2:38: when a person repents and is baptized in the name of Jesus, the person will receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost which is the Spirit of God fills the person and the sign of this is speaking in tongues. It is a language between the person and God. The person speaking doesn't know what they're saying as its Gods Spirit praying for them. Easy-peasy! A person does not have the Holy Ghost without speaking in tongues!!

I don't have the gift and I have always fear the unknown language that the speaker may blaspheme God unknowingly.

The gift of tongues is the Holy Spirit himself interceding for us. He would never speak against himself ❤️ don’t buy into that fear. It’s the best gift any human can receive!!!!!!
