This is a tribute to their bassist Cliff Burton, who tragically died in a tour bus crash,

The best tribute for Cliff! RIP Cliff!

His death was more than a simple crash of the bus. The tragic truth behind his death was him being flung out of the window of the bus, and being smothered underneath it.

I couldn't think of a better send off to Cliff than this track right here.
The highs, the lows, then ramping back up. Very operatic and orchestral sounding - Something Cliff was a big fan of. The violin sound are volume swells, giving it a very haunting sound. Add the poems that Cliff had written down, and James reading them as if they were a eulogy make this a tragically beautiful song.
This is my favorite track on the album. I wish they would have played this during one of the S&M shows.

    1. The slow introduction: it symbolizes the feeling of aggression and loss that the band suffers due to their loss.
    2. Solo #1: represents the whole feeling of anger of Kirk Hammett.
    3. The interlude (slow part of the intro): it represents the acceptance of the loss of the 3 remaining members, and the going forward in their honor.
    4. Solo # 2: represents how deeply the death of Cliff Burton has affected them.
    5. On the return of the heavy part, they pay tribute to Cliff by reading the poem, his last composition, and continue with the tribute doing just what Cliff would have expected of them, to move forward with the music.
    6. Upon reaching the end, the song returns to the classic style of the introduction, symbolizing the memory of Cliff, which will never end. The final riff is suddenly interrupted, symbolizing the end of Cliff's life, cut short by death at such a young age.

    • @Hale-Bopp
      @Hale-Bopp 6 месяцев назад

Solo 1 is James Hetfield it's a rhythm guitar. Kirk didn't have a solo in this song.. His lead guitar always blend with James rhythm guitar the entire music.

Technically not an instrumental but I love it. My favorite is Orion. So much so, that’s what I named my cat.

This song is very unique because it contains few Cliff's unfinished riffs and Metallica got them together and made a song out of it. Also the band was very f'd up after Cliff's death. He was very talented and had huge impact on metallica progress as a bass player.

The way I hear it, the introduction is the first nine months in the womb. Then comes birth with the drums. You follow the whole life with its struggles, and then life fades away. Finally, it returns to the cosmos..

Cliff Burton's last song. His last writing credit with the band. Thanks for doing it. Not enough people react to this song.
Edit: I love people's face when Metallica hits them with the Volume Swells.

James Hetfield is playing the guitar solo (at the song's breakdown)!!!! That's my favourite part of this track, by the way!!
Funny fact: That's them "tribute" to Cliff Burton, them first bassist

The song ends abruptly and too early, as a tribute to a life ending too early.

  • @JohnSmith-vm2jl

It's good...I've given it several fair listens. The only 2 concerts I've been to in my entire life were And Justice For All concerts. I rank Orion #1, Call of Ktulu #2, and after that who cares. Not saying To Live Is To Die is bad, but it doesn't compare to the previous instrumentals. It actually demonstrates what a lack of Cliff Burton has on a band.
