  • I am making progress. The reel error problem turned out to be bad tape detection switches. The pin switches that tell the machine what type of tape is inserted. Who would have thought. I'm telling you this here because I didn't catch it on camera.

Oh no! @14:37 the dreaded Dallas RTC battery. Most likely that thing is long deceased. That may very well be part of the problem. Guys that work on old pc's hate those things. Edit: I just noticed another round cell below and to the right of the Dallas battery.

I think the NTSC issue is in the TBC. It is sending zeros to the video DAC in NTSC mode. The dull green color is 0,0,0 as YUV. 255,255,255 would give you bright magenta, and you could see both of those colors in the digital garbage. But it will play an NTSC tape as long as the TBC is set to output PAL, which means there is good analog NTSC video going in and the TBC can sample and convert it. When the TBC is set to output NTSC, you get zeros. Is there a setting to bypass the TBC to see if that is in fact the problem?

Hi, Dave. There should be some more selections in the menu to select from, between digital and analog. There should also be LP/SP switching in the menu. Normally the Servo board on these machine becomes defective which does not allow NTSC to run. The NTSC playback in PAL is indicating a fault with the machine because you should not have any playback of NTSC in PAL after the selection adjust of 625/525. This seems like those SMD caps again. First, go through more of the settings and try to find Digital/Analog/SP/LP setting and adjust.

Beat up in transport? How difficult is it for people to make sure an item cannot move inside a solid box and protect it inside from any side/angle. Shipped dozen's of heavy hifi gear. Never had any problems.

Damn, VHS aint got shit on betamax. this looks like a PC with all those cards. Maybe the analog card is missing? using contact adhesive add some 5mm foam under the head drum protection plate, that will quieten that drum massively.
American films with music play fast here in the UK because they're 60HZ

Movies are filmed and meant to play in movie theaters at 24 FPS, but in countries with 50 FPS (25 full frames) they are played at 25 FPS for film to TV signal conversion. That's why they sound slightly sped up.

This is not betamax. It is betacam. The format used by tv stations and production centers. Same size tape but totally totally incompatible. The transport is the same, just different head drum.

Glad you had fun.trying to get this machine going again
Unfortunately another.of.these really good old.machines were sadly scrapped by the young as they didn't know what they were or.couldnt care less. To them it was old technology.

It is old technology, but for those of us that are digitizing old footage it is a must that we keep this old crap running as long as possible.

I had to take a break, and now watch the last 20+ minutes. That thing is like a computer with a videotape player inside.
Maybe you can put custom feet on the bottom to stop the wobbling.

I assume most of the chips on those boards are proprietary and most likely not going to be replaceable if they fail.

Some are for sure, but many are common parts These machines are not that much different that an old home betamax. Thats what they started out as. Sony had their failed betamax format that they spent a ton on deveolping and they turned it into pure profit as the betacam format because the world wide industry standard for pretty much every broadcaster in the world. It quickly became the cassette format and lasted right through HD roll out right to the end of tape.

I noticed when You pulled out the 4th long Board, there is what looks like an empty Chip socket at the top of the Board. ??

You can ship anything in a box packed and paddedv so good that UPS , FedEx or any shipping company will manage to break it after football. The shipper may tell you, it wasn't packed well enough. Sorry, no compensation.
