I'm in my first year teaching k through 2 autistic students with a majority of them being in first grade. Your videos are my mentor teacher videos. Thank you so much for sharing all of your great ideas!
Thank you for sharing your schedule and all of your ideas! They are a life saver! (I will say HMH Into Reading is not nearly as strong as the Heggerty/Fundations combo. I am using HMH Into Reading for the second year in a row and I wish we had what you have.)
As a teacher for over 20 years, you inspire me each time I watch you! Thank you! Side question, are your phonics cards on your wall from Fundations or did you create them?
You are so kind, thank you!! They are free cards I made to align with the Fundations symbols! This way I can easily add in some other ones we teach and it'll look cohesive! You can find those here: bit.ly/SJTfundationswallcards
I love your videos and this one. I'm impressed with your efficiency. I find any of the one things you do say for 10 minutes I could easily spend 30 minutes on with my students. For me keeping a quick pace is challenging as my students this year are lower and so there are frequent misconceptions I need to address. Do you have lower students that are lost and if so do you just worry about them during your intervention block? Thanks!
That's a great question - I certainly address misconceptions, but if I find it's going too long or I am starting to lose my students' attention, I will just repeat that lesson (or clarify the misconception) in the next day's lesson. That is only if MOST of my class isn't getting it though. If it is a couple students or a small group, I would just see them during the WIN block or make note to address that in their small group during literacy centers if that makes sense. That is another reason I really love my WIN time - it is super flexible and allows me to re-teach what is needed. So most of the time, yes, we are addressing that in small groups. However, if most of my class isn't getting a concept, I have no problem reteaching the lesson the following day.
20 years as a teacher and I'm always learning something new from you! Thank you! Where did you get the ball that you use for morning meeting? The ones I have seen seem like they would break quickly. Do you have your slides available that you use for Morning Meetings?
Thank you for your insight! Your videos are always very thorough and explain a lot. I would like to know how you fit in read-aloud and grammar lessons. Is it a daily structure or designated days?
The read aloud and explicit vocabulary instruction is always during that reading block (1:45-2:30). Grammar is often taught as mini lessons in writing! I shared some of the writing warm ups I use that help with that!
I really enjoy your videos and they are helpful. I also use your stuff on TPT which my students enjoy. I was wondering what math curriculum do you use in your school?
Our school currently uses Math In Focus. It is honestly not my favorite and I find it to be VERY wordy... but there is a lot to pull from, so once you get used to it, you can find the parts of the lesson you want to pull and use!
Question, where can I find the 10 minute timer you use on your smart board? Love your videos! I have learned so much from you! Love seeing your classroom too!
Thank you so much! I always just insert a video into GoogleSlides and search for a "10 minute timer with calming music" there are a few I rotate through!
I have a whole playlist of writing videos found here: ruclips.net/video/WwYPqe5BMTs/видео.html (there are abour 44 videos, you can scroll through them and find the genre you're looking for!). And yes, we currently use Math in Focus.
Love the video! I wonder...is there a teacher shortage in your area? Would you recommend teaching in your state? As a Canadian elementary school teacher with the possibility of moving to the U.S., I am curious!
I live in Massachusetts and there is not currently a teacher shortage, unlike many parts of the country. There is a substitute teacher shortage, instructional assistance shortage, and (possibly?) a special education shortage, but not for general ed teachers!
I haven't really created too many social studies or science related unit - and the ones I did make are over a decade old at this point! We've been using "Karen Jones" on TPT for social studies (we like her Little Thinkers units) and in Science, my kids love Mystery Science and Generation Genius!
Frequent check ins during whole group instruction for sure - and when we are doing something like word building or dictation, I am closely monitoring them. Then, they get seen in small groups during the WIN block for math or reading, and also the literacy center time for students struggling with phonics!
I love your lesson structure Susan! Thanks for the extra ideas!!🥰
You're so welcome - Happy to help!!

Thank you Susan! I enjoyed this! I always can get new ideas from you. Your organization is fabulous!

My first graders love love Wild Kratts! We watch it everyday after packing up for dismissal.
Thank you so much, this video is so helpful! Do you have a link for the heart word cards, I love them!
Great video! I’m loving your sweater. Please share where you bought it 😊
Stich Fix!! I get a box about once per month or once every 6 weeks and I've been LOVING their sweaters!
Inspiring!!😊
Thanks so much, I am glad you liked it!

I agree! I am 20 years in and I love seeing new ideas to include into our day!

Our school uses EnVisions which I don’t like. Hope they will adopt a better math curriculum next school year.
Thank you again

Can you share how you meet the needs of advanced/gifted students?
Thanks for sharing your schedule! Do you have any videos on teaching writing? Also, does your district have a math curriculum you use?

Thanks so much for your detailed day schedule. If you can let us know no more on your math block..

You probably don't have a teacher shortage because your teachers get 45 minutes for lunch. 😊 We only get 25 minutes . @@SusanJonesTeaching
Is there anyway you could tell me if your partner teacher has those math scratch garden slides to purchase?
Do you ever share your lessons on Social Studies and Science?
I haven't really created too many social studies or science related unit - and the ones I did make are over a decade old at this point! We've been using "Karen Jones" on TPT for social studies (we like her Little Thinkers units) and in Science, my kids love Mystery Science and Generation Genius!
Question, do you give your students a reading log? How do you manage that?
My students do not have a reading log, no!
How do you handle the kids that are struggling and not understanding?
Frequent check ins during whole group instruction for sure - and when we are doing something like word building or dictation, I am closely monitoring them.
