so because of the longevity of the war and pretty much no end in sight, the head of the NATO Secretary-General's Office suggested that Ukraine should give up the land that is now under Russian control,
In return Ukraine would receive NATO membership which means Russia would most likely not attack the rest of the country, as it also wouldn't risk a war with the entire alliance,
However Ukrainian leaders got furious at this proposal as they do not want to lose this much land,
Stian Jenssen of course apologized the next day stating that it should be up to Ukraine to decide its future,

I get this is a meme… but Anyway, Russia never actually formally applied to join NATO. When Putin asked NATO chief George Robertson when Russia would be invited to join NATO (back in 2000ish), they were told they needed to reply. Russia never did.

It isn’t controversial at all. MATO has zero obligation to Ukraine. US is controlling Ukraine like a puppet state, Russia was warranted to attack. There is no way for Ukraine to retake land, they should have came to the negotiation table long ago. Russia has already taken control of the Ukraine access to the black sea. Ukraine is now fighting a pint less war and giving Russia opportunity to take even more land.

Just imagine if your country got attacked by other country and they occupied a lot of territories where live your friends or family or even you. The problem with giving up the territory is not just because it would set a bad example for global politics, where a great power can just continue to annex territory in defiance of international law, treaty, and standards; but also these territories are some other the wealthiest and most useful territory in Ukraine, leaving the rest of the nation impoverished and struggling economically (more so in light of the war)
