    There was a moment, in June 2024, when Microsoft closed the profitable and critically acclaimed game studio Tango Gameworks, upending many lives in the process. Publicly they just explained it with standard corporate deflection before eventually saying to employees that their central team was spread too thin and that's why they had to close down the studios. They burnt money to reduce executive workload.
    This, this here, is how I think of right-wing privatization. Republicans are lazy, they could figure out a system for public healthcare and put the work in to manage it, or they could take the quick and easy fix of just paying some dude with questionable morals a bunch of money to do the healthcare. They will burn money to save themselves some effort as long as it doesn't come at the expense of their power. If they will treat money with such callous disregard, imagine what they'll do to people.

It’s obvious what most of the questions will generally cover, immigration, economics, foreign affairs, envrioment, etc. just prepare for those general topics. Trump just did not bother to prepare. It's interesting that he really has such a different work ethic from how I understand it.
      Right now when he is losing, his effort does not go into reevaluating if he is losing or not. It goes into convincing his supporters that heis still winning. Effectively, that will not change anything in the votes because the people that are willing to believe he is actually leading in the polls were not the ones hw had to win over.
      So what is he doing this for? Like, does he just not know how to approach a problem, or is the plan that he knows a guy that will help him solvethis problem for him?

      @@corneliahanimann2173 I'm not sure that Trump thinks of it this way but he clearly needs to be careful to not undermine his base because that's really all he has. It seems like they will not turn on Trump regardless of what he says but his supporters will clearly turn on anyone else and perhaps they will turn on Trump also. Trump has set up fairly strong lines that he just can't cross at this point. He needs to walk a careful line on abortion, Ukraine, gun control of any sort, election security, etc. If he changes course on any of those he runs the risk of losing some of his base. He also needs to keep saying as many outrageous things as possible as that is what his base likes. It's a "tiger by the tail" sort of thing.

    I really do believe authoritarianism is great for people who are 1) lazy and 2) cowards.
    It’s great for lazy people because when they hand power to an authoritarian leader, they no longer have to do any of their own thinking or feeling. They only have to follow orders. When one takes responsibility for one’s own thoughts and behavior, it’s so tiring. Being informed takes work, developing sympathy and empathy for other people takes work, devising and implementing real plans to make things better takes work.
    The cowardice comes into play because one has to be a little bit bold in order to challenge oneself, challenge other people, or take action to improve one’s community. There is always a chance it will fail, and failure is scary. Even if it succeeds, that success means things will change, and change is also scary.

      Well my Trump loving brother called me when that was a thing and loudly ranted about how outrageous this was and that the schools have gone crazy, Etc. I calmly explained to him why that was a lie and how a school would never let a child go to the bathroom in a litter box due to hygienic concerns. I also pointed out that no child would want to crap in a litter box. Now my brother is dumb and gullible, but at least he can be reasoned with, and he came to realize that the story was a lie. They understand that having a political candidate feign religiosity to win their votes is part of the game. But Trump was so bad at it, because he wouldn't do any of the homework needed to even start to pull it off, that my old man found it insulting. There were many other things he didn't like about Trumpism. But it was that early on insult to his intelligence that just really got under his skin. It was as if republicans decided that it wasn't worth it to put in an effort to fool him. Once you nod along and go with a leader that thinks so little about you to even make an effort, you can't expect to be treated with any kind of respect or dignity going forward.

Psychology prof Bob Altemeyer, in his book The Authoritarians, noted that about a third of the population leans toward being a right-wing authoritarian follower (characterized by wanting a "strong man" leader, being strongly conformist, and preferring punitive measures against anyone who doesn't conform). I understand the point you are making but as someone who's favorite virtue is sloth, please don't lump Trump et. all in with us honest slackers. A truly lazy person finds the easiest way to get the job done while still accomplishing the task. It isn't about being efficient either. Efficiency to me means you want more productivity. Do you think the guy who invented the water wheel was trying to grind more wheat? No, dude was trying to get the milling done so he could go fishing.

    • @ewhschrisc
      @ewhschrisc 16 дней назад +15

      I get your point, but what you're describing doesn't really seem like 'sloth' to me. Sloth for me has always been a sort of apathy towards important tasks that need doing, a kind of disregard for things that are required. You are more of an efficient worker with a healthy work/life balance. You should be able to get that water wheel set up and done so you can go fishing; the people who want to grind more and more wheat demonstrate sloth since they are indifferent to the effort and people that set up that wheel in the first place and are just focused on quantity and profit; they are apathetic towards worker needs and desires.

I work production with quite a few red hats, and it always seems they half-ass their work more than anyone else, and I'm always cleaning up after their laziness. They will go out of their way to hide responsibilities that they were supposed to take care of so that I find them and am stuck dealing with it. Why can't they be lazy like me, and do the job right the first time so they don't have to worry about doing the job again with an angrier manager later?

    As an accompainment to this video I can really recommend the explainer on Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Theory of Stupidity by the channel Sprouts.

    • @CuriousCrow-mp4cx
      @CuriousCrow-mp4cx 16 дней назад

      Bonhoeffer never had a theory of stupidity. He wrote a piece called "Of Folly", in which he said that the folly consuming the ordinary Trump voter is not intellectual but social and psychological, to the extent they are consumed by it. They are under a spell, because their darkest emotions are validated by Trump-like figures. Bonhoeffer argued that given the right circumstances no-one is immune. And he cautioned against looking down upon them as they were suffering a very distinct part of the human condition.
      You are thinking of the Italian mathematician who described in a little essay for his friends a 4-way descriptive theory of stupidity, which was published after his death.
      Bonhoeffer thought the cure for this folly was spiritual liberation as a shift in perspective away towards universal values.
      The Italian mathematician offered no cure.
      I just read Bonhoeffer's essay again a couple of days ago, and it was the Sprouts video that motivated me to read his essay from the collection “Letters and Papers from Prison: The Enlarged Edition“, Edited by Eberhard Bethge (1997). "Of Folly" is on page 8, and you should read it. I've also read the Italian mathematician's work, and it is more tongue in cheek than anything. And if you research Dietrich Bonhoeffer, you realise why his work is more valuable. As he himself was once gripped by this same folly. He supported Hitler and the Nazi Party, but turned against them once they had shown their intent to control religion in the Reich. He publically spoke out against it, and ended up in a concentration camp, where he would be executed just before the end of the war. So whilst the Sprouts video was an introduction, it isn't correct to describe Bonhoeffer's essay as being about stupidity. It was describing a psychological state created by societal pressures. And if you look at what actually happened in the Weimar Republic, you realise why it was possible that even educated and intellectual people fall victim to people like Hitler and Trump. And why people like them even exist.
      As for America, that is its biggest hurdle. It has to rediscover a reason to exist which does not exploit human weaknesses, and create the conditions where such folly can take hold, and people like Trump can exploit it's shortcomings and gain power.

    As someone who was called "lazy" in childhood and then internalized it into adulthood, I agree with Dana. When I was given tasks I saw no point in, when I was surrounded by people whom I didn't care about or wanted to bring me down, I was demotivated and did the bare minimum that would not get me fired or noticed.
    But then once I had something I cared about, once I was given confidence and agency, I'm now trying not to burn myself out (again) by working too hard.
    So what does Donald Trump care about?
    He cares about not losing to a black woman. And he cares about not going to jail. That's it. That's all he cares about. He doesn't care about his family, his legacy, his reputation, his cause, he just cares about his racism and not suffering the consequences of his crimes.
    That's why he's lazy. Because his priorities are all f**ked up, and he doesn't have a clear mission to focus all his energies.
