Wow… What a way to instantly turn six years old again… 57 years ago in a Baptist Church in a tiny West Texas town… Sunday night in the middle of summer and all the huge unscreened stained-glass windows are open, and one of my Sunday School teachers is in the pew behind us, belting out that bass part. I can smell honeysuckle.
Great memory!! This reminds me of my teen years back in the first church I ever went to. We would sing this and similar hymns on Sunday nights. I used to refer to them as the happy hymns!! I miss my first church and all the wonderful people who helped me in my new walk with the Lord.

One of my all-time favourite poetic lines in all of Hymndom begins around the 1:20 mark: "Just one glimpse of him in glory will the toils of life repay." The profundity of that line never fails to amaze me. Imagine living at a time of severe persecution, and you are tortured to death for your faith. You stay on the torture table for hours, each of which feels to you like a year or more, and finally, the Lord releases you from this life, and you stand before Jesus and see him for the first time. According to this hymn, your reaction might be like this: "Yup. It was worth every minute. I'd do it again if he asked me." THAT'S an amazing testimony.

This was my family friend grandmother’s favorite. When she passed, the church had a wake, and we sang this song. Well, we tried😂. Everyone was tearing up because we were happy knowing she was in a good place. It’s such a good pick me up. Still hits me in my chest.
