As a kid (1981/2) I used to love riding in a 4840 the contractor used on a Gehl forager, when they chopped our silage. An absolute monster of a machine back then. I'd only just started driving tractors at the age of ten when he kicked me out the cab and told me to jump in a MF595 with a spare trailer on to run alongside because the rest of the carting fleet weren't getting back from the clamp quick enough!
I’d like to have that engine for a week, it would start with flick of the key, the engine wouldn’t hunt and it wouldn’t smoke. I’ve overhauled and repaired many of these engines over the years, this was my favourite engine, loved the sound and my favourite rating was the VT 903 350 horsepower. The VT 903 was also used in tanks but the ratings were as high as 600 h.p. I’m told, it would take a huge radiator to cool the high horsepower. Great video,
Thanks George, me and my Dad used to drive these beasts back in 1985 to 89 and can you imagine how good that would be when two of them were brand new?Unbelievable!!💪💪😮
Have no experience with the 903 in farm tractors but did work for a trucking company that had a fleet of trucks with 903's both turbo and nonturbo, good engines
I started working on a farm about a month ago, they have two 4840s. My first week in I'm thrown in the thing with this massive Salford thing on the back. In 20 minutes I hit a power pole and took out a 69k volt high tension line that came down on the tractor lol
Wow George that’s a big Girl , the plough look so small from where your view , that’s a massive tractor built for drawbar pulling as well as draft pulling huge implements in the American north west 👍
DANG George...when you bumped the throttle up my first thought was 'if only that MF had straight pipes!' And you be right about the 'torque curve vs. hp' - the ideal is that both top out almost evenly and that Cummins V8 was noted for that. I think the only diesel engine in today's agri application that match's that older Cummins is the MAN diesel engine that both Claas and Fendt use - just my opinion mind you. Anyhoo...another great video! Stay safe - be well - many blessings.
Dat'z da Mutts Nutts! Don't need no gps auto steer, no stinkin A - B lines, no soft ware updates, no protected repair copy right diagnostics. Just open yer repair manual, give it a few wacks with yer ball peen and Bob's yer Uncle. Drive it!! 👍✌️🇺🇸
Brilliant video, never seen big MF's at work like this before. It sounded like the engine was 'hunting' a little at the start of the video but expect they all do this.
Did a lot of hours on a 4840 in Tasmania(AUS).last I knew it had 17000 hours on it! The only thing we changed in the motor was the rod accerater to stop hunting on the fuel pump governor
I drove an IH artic eight wheeler out West of Hay NSW at 'Ravensworth' back in early 90s. It was a model I had not seen elswhere, was not a 'Snoopy', more a Steiger lookalike though not quite that either. It had a V10 in it but can't recall the engine brand. It was about 420 hp. If anyone got any ideas, feel free to comment.
Oh dear George, someone has let the cat 🐱 out of the bag regarding the stable mate to your Ford TW 25, looking forward to seeing the other vids from this event and you be good out there and sorry that I was late to your premiere party.
Didn't even sound as though she was breaking into a sweat. Perhaps we could another V8 Cummins in the guise of the FW60 sometime? The days before modern technology- bring 'em back.
Fabulous machine, and plough. Who needs a reverser when you got the real thing... I would have adjusted the rear disk a bit to align with the last landslide.
Great classic beast!! There’s a few folks in the comments that have experience running a 4840 and I was wondering did they engine ‘lope’ when idling? Or is it b/c it’s an older Cummins with many hours on it? Great vid George & yes it would be something to hear the old boy with twin pipes or straight pipes. Lol Cheers
They was good engs, fuel sippers... turn them up too much & they don't last long... maybe 425 hp max. I have a MF4000 series in farming simulator i made. These sounds may come to good use.
We used these on stone carts filling drainage trenches nice tractors ahead of their time back in the day . Can I ask why it’s Hunting . I’d have to fettle that . Or am I just and old yoking moaner
You lucky bugger.👍. That Cummings sure sounds sweet. Find a Muir Hill 161 (Perkins V8 Twin Exhaust - the same one as in Matchbox toys) to drive and I'll give you £100 for your favourite charity. We had one back in the 70s/80s brought with a reversable JD 7 furrow plough. The plough lasted about a season, I think cos my family were too tight to order the needed part for the broken down plough from the States - obviously something hydraulic. They went and put a convertional 5-6 furrow plough on the 161. What an absolute waste of a machine. It finaly died about 86/87 with a cracked block. My dad and uncle used to thrash the living daylights out of it and I always felt sorry for the "Honey Monster" as I called it.
Good vid George, ........but a typical worn Cummins of that era, .....no end of cranking to get it to start,.............................. even when having run earlier that day.'
I ran an international transtar cabover with a 903 i was coming out of florida one night passed a guy he came on the radio and said what the fuck is in that thing
good old days when u could pick up leaflets from the MF stand at royal show , this was the trump card!
No adblue or DPF with that old girl !
She sounds awesome 👌 💪

I had a 1983 4840, pulled 43ft. deep tillage cultivator, 6 mph all day long.
Thanks George, me and my Dad used to drive these beasts back in 1985 to 89 and can you imagine how good that would be when two of them were brand new?Unbelievable!!💪💪😮
Preview stimulates the appetite for the actual video. Significant accomplishment. Only other creator capable of this feat is the great Lord Muck.
265hp yet it has 2 little pricks of lights you’d find on a 135, excellent
George this is a proper monster of a tractor. You could plow the world w/ this huge kit.🚜
Always been a dream to restore one of these to mint condition, best tractors ever made👌
i had the biggest smile on my face watching this! :) thanks George
Yea in 1980 I operated a 3000 Yale pay loader with a 903 Cummins what a beautiful sound
Have no experience with the 903 in farm tractors but did work for a trucking company that had a fleet of trucks with 903's both turbo and nonturbo, good engines
That was brilliant, what a mesmerising sound from the 4840. Love the modern classics. Great work George 👍🏻

Never heard off one off them George awesome video really enjoyed it old school is the best school
Brilliant video, never seen big MF's at work like this before. It sounded like the engine was 'hunting' a little at the start of the video but expect they all do this.
Absolutely brilliant we had a mf and tw60 not a lot of difference between them
Did a lot of hours on a 4840 in Tasmania(AUS).last I knew it had 17000 hours on it! The only thing we changed in the motor was the rod accerater to stop hunting on the fuel pump governor

Correct George , grunt (direct mech drive) and weight can out perform modern cvt and choked engines in certain areas.
Oh dear George, someone has let the cat 🐱 out of the bag regarding the stable mate to your Ford TW 25, looking forward to seeing the other vids from this event and you be good out there and sorry that I was late to your premiere party.

I wonder how many telegraph poles and gaitposts went missing from people turning a articulated tractor and plough
Don't piss the dodge boys off mentioning a bigger cummins.lol
A 903 Cummins is an answer to 71 series Detroit oil leakers at their best.
Like that George very good could do a lot of oughing in a day with one of those also drink a lot of fuel
Awesome video. Little issue i barely hear You.
George you need to get your hands on a Cat 3408 for some serious pulling power
We used these on stone carts filling drainage trenches nice tractors ahead of their time back in the day . Can I ask why it’s Hunting . I’d have to fettle that . Or am I just and old yoking moaner
Can you tow the world with that beastie? :-)
No School Like Old School

Impressive sight! How was it, I do belive it*s not the easiest tractor to plow with the plough in the 3 point linkage?
Proper sound ....
Hope old girl got nice shiny straight pipe👍
Good vid George, ........but a typical worn Cummins of that era, .....no end of cranking to get it to start,.............................. even when having run earlier that day.'
