My dad used to teach theatre and he would often comment on some TV shows and movies where he said the makeup artist overdid it. They would often add lipstick to male actors in TV shows, movies, and videos, because they thought their natural lip color would fade out a little on screen, so they would add a little color to make up for that. The goal was to make it look natural, so it would look like they were not wearing lipstick at all, but the makeup artists would often overdo it so it would look obvious it was lipstick. This might be one of those times. Then again, this was the era of Boy George, who was probably the first big singer who wore wore makeup, including eyeliner and eyeshadow, the works.
There were many different looks for bands in the 80s, this would fall under “New Romantics” and their style was men wearing makeup. Look at Duran Duran, The Human League, Adam Ant etc.
