I finally understand why Ruyi cut her hair. Not because she disliked him, and not because she hated him at that moment, but because she was just tired of trying to save a relationship that was better off severed and she was mourning the death of the love between her and Hongli.
She was divorcing him. Because this was talked by them once; how in some cultures when a wife ir husband cut her/his hair it means she or he are divorcing.
I don't think the emperor ever truly loved her, he had a soft spot for her because they were childhood friends but nothing more.
As the empress dowager said in an earlier episode "an emperor's heart is inaccessible" or something like that, that's because all women in his harem are disposable to him he has no reason to cherish them unfortunately
Machu could only cut their hair when in mourning. She was mourning Qingyer and Hongli, because they were both dead by that moment, The empress and emperor were different people from their younger self and they both yearned their younger version, not what they had become. They both said it, and they also said they couldn't recognize eachother anymore, so when she cuts her hair she says she is in mourning for their former selves that loved eachother.
She was probably thinking I have up my love for this poor excuse of a king HE NEVER PROTECTED HER HE WAS A VILE KING🤮

The sheer magnificence of how Ruyi left after not only cutting her hair, but dropping it on the floor to further emphasize he had crossed her bottom line. She showed the Emperor, how she truly viewed him. Looking at these clips after the drama, I realized the Emperor wasn't as clueless as one might think. He knew the harm he was doing, but as the Emperor, he erroneously thought, all would be forgiven and forgotten and his actions were acceptable. He forgot one important fact, Ruyi was not in anyway like his former Empress. She wasn't timid and only there to please him. She called him out on his bs and after all he had put her through, there was only so much she could excuse or overlook. This was the beginning of the end, I believe the true break happened after all what he put Ling Yunche through.
Just tragic.
And the fact that they knew each other from childhood- she got old history with him. He knew better and still went there. Smh.

@@iseeflowers No. In happier times after Ruyi was released, he essentially shut down the Cold Palace as a place for discarded former royal wives & concubines. Closing it was a ‘gift’ for Ruyi since she suggested it.
When a woman gets tired of her man bs. She will let you know. I have watched this show many times. And how she carries herself as a friend, wife and mother and finally an empress, was truly amazing. She did everything she could for him even forgiving his tyrant was sometimes

Ruyi was always accused and punished for everything that happened in the Palace by the Emperor. In that moment when he slapped her, she looked up and what love she had for him was gone. She held onto him all those years and he just didn't seem to care. What courage it took for her to cut her hair. She seemed like such a good person and deserved to have children and an Emperor who loved her but she didn't get to keep either.
When the emperor beat Ruyi, Ruyi had already given up!
It wasn't the physical slap ... I believe when he said that she failed to do her wifely duty was the slap that pushed her.
The first time he slapped her, she cried.
The second time, not only that she didnt shed a tear, she cut her hair. She was so strong throughout the series. I love the fact that Ruyi gave to the Emperor exactly what he deserved and didn't forgive him in the end. Every time he insulted her, casted her away (the incident to the cold palace too), wasn't there for her, slapped her, she didn't forgive these things but kept them into her heart. I'm glad that she didn't let go of these.n
Through the series she never gave up on her beliefs and was truly a great empress and wife.
Too bad that Qianlongn couldn't see it, because his only love was empress Fucha (in history too).
He was indeed the best and the worst thing that happened to the Qing dynasty.
He changed for the worst, or perhaps just got bored of Ruyi (I think that what was attracting him to her was the fact that back then she was the only one that had the courage to say "no" to him and didn't do as he pleased).
Ruyi was the one that remained the same and truly loved him.
She loved until she didn't have anything to love anymore.
And I think that the last straw for Ruyi was when the emperor tortured Ling Yunche, made him an eunuch, ordered him to serve her and Qianlongn then wanted to have a meal with Ruyi saying that he prepared her favorite dishes when in fact it was everything she hated+ the dishes looked exactly like a p€nis etc. I don't think that it was coincidental + he asked Ling Yunchen to feed Ruyi too when she didn't want to eat a thing.
In this series, unfortunately he didnt give a care for Empress Xiaoxian either 😅
He have high expectation on her and she obediently followed his wishes and caused others to be hurted by her because of her jealousy (especially Ruyi and Huixian) but she never get the love and respect during her life 😭
Qianlong in this moment already tired from everyone calculations and intentions, so he proceeds to play around and expect Ruyi to behave like Empress Xiaoxian, obediently follow his wishes 😢
That scene with Ling Yunche was excruciating. I felt so bad for Ruyi and Ling Yunche
I thought the great love of his life was Wei Yingluo / Wei Yanwan 🤡🤡 I'm exhausted
@@isabelmatos1547 not In this show. It's loosely based on history but in this show he always wanted ruyi from the get go. He was forced by the then emperor to take langhua as his first wife and that ugly Gao as his concubine.. he never loved langhua nor Gao. Or yanwan
Unfortunately he didn't really feel "love" for the Empress Fucha, Wei Yanwan, or Mistress Rong either.
Whatever love he did feel rerouted solely towards himself.
This drama is sadly so accurate when it displays the problems between couples, there's always one partner who loses their respect for the other due to abuse/neglect/arrogance from the other.
This scene is so satisfying to watch. She must have crushed his man child ego badly. And the way she dropped the hair like Salt Bae lol!!!

I think so too. It also makes me think that the reason the emperor kept treating Ruyi like sh*t compared to his first empress was that Ruyi didn’t come from a powerful clan. With the other empress he probably would’ve listened to her, probably admonish her and give her the cold shoulder momentarily but he wouldn’t prolong it. But because he knew by mistreating and mentally torturing Ruyi there wasn’t anyone that could admonish him for it, not even his own mother, he rarely took her perspective in account. I think this is what Ruyi realized and her cutting her hair was her saying She has nothing else to lose.
@@20PINKluvr the original Empress wouldn’t do anything. She was too afraid of the Emperor to interrupt his fun. He would just say they were just dancing showing off their culture. While Ruyi will put up a fuss, the original Empress would’ve taken his word for it and scampered away.
Actually this scene was the first time she called Ruyi Royal Mother instead of calling Ruyi Empress or she/her showing that she was wrong to blame her and admired her

I can’t stop commenting on these clips. I saw all episodes 3 times. The acting is superb. Not only the main characters, but every single actor even to the extras. I am truly addicted to “Ruyi and Her Royal Love in the Palace. “.

It's the whole production. Set design, costuming, hair, makeup, location. All of it fascinate this American women. I've learned so much about Chinese culture % history. Thank you.

The best historical chinese drama I've watched since I started to watch chinese dramas in 2011 and trust me I've watched a lot bad and good.
Me too,,,, but, I can’t watch again so many episodes from 1 to. 150?. So, I enjoy this shorts when appear on my RUclips from time to time…. Best historical drama,, I wish I saw this drama before I went to Beijin , and visited all this palaces…. During that time… it just was listening to the tour guide, but not deeply with attention,,,, now, I feel that if I go again,,, I will be able to remember this and that!!
She’s sick of him. He never trusts anyone, promising one thing them keep doubting and tormenting them. He’s toxic just like his royal mother.
The Dowager Empress has her faults but in the end she wanted strong concubines to balance power in the haram, not to upset her son’s reign. That’s why she hated Wei Yanwan and supported Ruyi while her son turned a blind eye.
This was a man-child, he would rather have women who bend to him like the willows instead of the caring, strong and nurturing woman who was his Empress. To actually compare Ruyi to two murderers showed his immaturity and insecurity at being told the truth in a gentle and non threatening way. Ruyi called him out on all his bs, she didn't hold back. That was a long overdue reality check Ruyi gave the Emperor. I don't even think the Dowager Empress ever spoke to him so bluntly and It was high time he faced the truth. No man is an Island, even the Emperor has to face his people and what kind of legacy he would leave. Ruyi was trying to protect his reputation and the fool couldn't see past his lust. Good for her.
One of the best scenes of the entire series! Amazing work by both leads.
She is determined: so true to her heart, her people, and him as trying to protect his reputation and status. By the way, the director is brillant and smart and gifted: mesaage interpreted through all the camera, the music, the movement and many more.

He has been very evil to Ruyi and all the things he accuses her of he has done to her on multiple occasions without a care he is a horrid husband
This is an example of how power and wealth can get to someone's head. "Even if that is the case, I am the Emperor." And no matter how much power and wealth one may have, you will STILL never be able to buy something that is truly worthy. He keeps pandering to the people who stroke his ego knowing he is losing the people who are truly on his side the whole time, drunk on the feeling that he is someone special and someone worthy. It is truly pathetic and pitiful that he has let the role of emperor get to his head, believing that he deserves things, especially non-material intangible things like a person's devotion, just because he is emperor.

Her acting is so damn good that I actually think she is the empress and has to really endure this herself.
This portrayal of a person in power is realistic i think .. The paranoa and narcissism..and thinking they are always right even when confronted.. This is more realistic than an emperor in a happy marriage (not to mention the toxicity of any harem. Pitting women against each other, competting to please one guy who has all the power over them, never ends well). This guy clearly loved that woman and yet it changed nothing. In a society where men rule, the one man on top won't be fair to his woman.. Power corrupts in geberal, and also in couple dynamics
