Want to learn how to play easy guitar solos using just 4 notes?
Welcome to my new 'Simple Soloing' series. This series of lessons is aimed at the intermediate or late-beginner guitarist, but it would also suit the experienced player looking to take a step back, break out of a rut and play more simply, with good phrasing and musicality.
In this lesson, we look at an incredibly powerful limitation exercise in which we restrict ourselves to just 4 notes and try to squeeze as much musicality out of a small area of the neck as possible. This kind of exercise can be incredibly effective for improving your phrasing and improvisation skills.
Okay, technically, we're using 4 notes and a bend! This gives us the entire range of the E minor pentatonic scale without having to move our fretting hand!
In just 8 minutes, we will learn several bluesy licks and approaches to phrasing as we improvise over a static Em7 backing track.
    Have fun!

The picking technique in the bonus lick makes all the difference.

I’m glad you found it useful. Some people shy away from economy picking, but it can make certain licks easier to execute.

Meh, BB only needed one 😉
Great lesson. I was very influenced by an article I read years ago that Miles Davis often improvises within one octave. Took a lot of pressure off trying to traverse the fretboard all the time.

I know its good practice ,but maybe it would be just as good to practice these 4 (5) notes in different positions so it doesn't sound sooo limited.

You can expand or contract a limitation exercise to suit your needs, but the purpose of this exercise is to restrict ourselves to just one area of the neck. The next video goes on to expand this to different positions. Playing in different positions is important for fretboard knowledge, but the notes will be the same, so it will sound just as limited. I feel the approach here is to do more with less and really build vocabulary within a small area.
