I use the e609 every weekend, and have done so for two years or so. Your concern about the build quality can be laid to rest. They hold up. They also sound rather fantastic for their intended application: guitars and bass cabs.
+Paul Aulridge Jr Thank you very much! That’s great to hear. I love the tone of this thing on my amp. I have actually used it a couple times since the review (which is rare for me to say of many of the mics I review).

@Colton Rodrigo thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and Im in the hacking process now. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
The useful thing about these mics is that you can just hang them down the cab by their cable. You know the old trick: wind the cord around the combo amp's handle and down the front. The mic points in the right direction. Can't do that with a SM-57 while having it point in the intended way.
BREAKING NEWS: this mic is on sale at Long & McQuade (Canada) and amazon for only $79. Amazing deal for those of you watching this video and interested in making a purchase. Great review too. Thanks!
I've used these quite a lot in a live situation and I've always found the 609 to be almost aggressively clean, which is great for clean guitar playing but just dreadful for any kind of distortion or overdrive. That being said, if you can afford to, it's well worth going to an e906 which is the step up from this one. Much better sound and a bit more durable.
I appreciated that you used it on the vocals for speaking and singing, it really communicated the sound profile of the mic throughout the whole video. First of yours that I’ve seen. Good stuff.
After 5 years how do you feel about this mic, do you still have it, use it? how about the reliability you were talking about, it would be nice to get an update.
It is similar to the sm57 in terms of frequency response, but the form factor / handling noise / plosives make me not like it for voice. It REALLY excels at instruments though.
I don't think it picks up noise that much. If you let it hang from the amp in a live setting, the guitar amp is already going to be pretty loud. You don't have to push the gain too much to mic to mic a guitar amp. Of course if you use it for your speaking voice you're going to have to push the gain and pick up unwanted noise.
The E609 uses glass filled plastic which is quite rugged in a vaguely similar way to what carbon fibre is. It you need a metal one get the higher end E906
So, I took your advice and got one of these... It is indeed great! It picks up the guitar at close-mic range beatifully. What do you recommend for a budget room mic to compliment this? AKG414 is waaaay out of my price range. I'm looking for an omni condenser? Whst about ~$100 small diaphragm mics like the AKG P170?

can you do a bit of a tutorial on peaking because i feel like my mic peeks over things that it shouldnt is it the mic or the interface or am i just being loud
I haven't tried this mic personally, but this seems to be a great PODCASTING mic. It sounds smoother than the SM57 (which I think is a good podcasting mic for the price), plus it is a side address mic - which comes in very handy if you are sitting in front of a computer screen and don't have the space to put a front address mic with an attached cable between you and the screen. I was surprised to not notice any annoying pops. Also, the supercardioid pattern can be an advantage for podcasters.
I had not considered the form factor being a benefit for that kind of environment! That's actually a great point.I was being very careful about plosives. It is about as bad as the SM57 without a windscreen. So with this thing, I think you would need a windscreen/popfilter, and I don't know of any windscreens designed for this thing, so you may be stuck with a bulky pop filter which could block your view.
That's why - hint, hint! - the Shure Super 55 (supercardioid) and possibly 55SH (cardioid) are good podcasting mics in my opinion: They have the upright form factor, built-in shock mount and pop shield. From my experience, no additional shock mount is necessary, and a 'popgard' screen (meant for side address LDCs and attached with two elastic bands) can be attached for additional pop protection if needed. It's just great to be able to lean back during an hours-long podcast or Skype call, grab your Elvis mic and continue talking. (I have mine on a small K&M 23230 desktop stand.)
I've always thought these sounded so much more full on a guitar than the SM57. Also, really loved them as close mics on toms, too. Seems to get a nice low end roundness/fullness.

Hey fren. I'm looking into this mic as well for drums. However you don't want to use this or the sm57 as an overhead just imo. The e609 or 57 will do good on snare , toms, the e609 possibly on bass drum (looking into this) you want to use condenser mics for the overhead. They are more sensitive and will pick up the whole image of the drumkit. Where as dynamic mics will be close mics for the snare, toms, etc. My current set up is an akg p120 condenser as my overhead , sm57 as snare, and a cheap behringer xm8500 on bass drum. I'm going to get the e609 to close mic one of my toms, another to close mic a Tom and maybe a matched pair of condensers to replace my overhead p120. Just my two cents. Without knowing much about the ND76, I’d guess that what you’re experiencing is the just the common “dynamic vs condenser” scenario wherein the condenser mic simply being more sensitive allows you to turn your gain down a good bit on the mixer, reducing the noise floor. That being said, since the ND76 is also a dynamic mic, you may find that the background hiss will still be there. Podcastage they're really perfect for an enclosed iso cab setup. In that application you won't put it in danger of knocking or on stage antics. Utilizing an iso cab setup for larger productions and stage performances makes running cleaner audio to front of house a lot easier, but most people aren't at that level as performers tho. Typically, for stage level performances with only one amp in a smaller venue benefit more from the sm57. It's more rugged, better at rejection and "cheaper". However, this mic you've tested is equally and in my opinion better for micing cabs especially if you don't have a ribbon (super expensive).

Your concern about durability shouldn’t be a concern if used properly. SM57s are at risk for getting hit with drumsticks…and worse. It needs to be built like a tank. The 609 is designed to be flush up against a guitar cab. Safer territory.

Me too man. I'm suprised.
Doesn't sound too bad for vocal neither

WHERE ARE THE DAMN STICKERS???!!??!?!??!
Sennheiser doesn't want to give us what we want! What a bunch of punks.
Your concern about durability shouldn’t be a concern if used properly. SM57s are at risk for getting hit with drumsticks…and worse. It needs to be built like a tank.
The 609 is designed to be flush up against a guitar cab. Safer territory.
Fair point
I love this mic , it works every time and when chicks see it they cream their panties …. Especially the older generation. Grandmas and great grandmas wanna marry me that night but I just sign their breast … well some of em I have to initial my name ( you know who you are )
But this is a great mic for the money and I think it’s made by Germans (?)
Ya know , anything built by the Germans isn’t gonna break unless you own a German car but they design them that way so you’ll come back for another German car.
BTW … Front of this mic is the silver colored part of the mic. For the first year I thought it was the other way around and that’s why I wanted to see this vid 😬
Front towards the amp , black towards the crowd 🤙😎
Happy jammin everyone 🎸😀
dead pixel lo
over used mic.
is it overused?
