I've visited this factory before, without even realising! For a brief (and dark) period of my life I was a car salesman, for a car dealership in Wilmslow not far from there. All our new cars would get dropped off in a big carpark next to a factory in Mobberley, and we'd regularly have to go and collect them and drive them back to the dealership - this was the first journey any of those cars had taken on public roads, so that was pretty cool. Anyway turns out that factory was the one in this video - all this time I've been shooting Ilford film, I had no idea it was produced there! Mobberley is basically a small village, and the factory is bigger than the village itself. There's a fantastic bakery and Chinese chippy that we would visit regularly. That car salesman job was terrible for my heart health, both because of the ginormous amount of greasy food I consumed and how incredibly fucking stressful it was. Anyway, great video!
Excellent video. That factory must have had a lot more occupants in the boom years. It's not just analogue cameras that are getting old but also the machines that make the film. A fascinating insight.
I was kind of thinking the same thing, especially when seeing the more abandoned areas, like the lunch/cafeteria, etc. It's interesting, the decor seems like it was frozen int he late 50's early 60's maybe? That really added to the interesting effect....
@@chilecayenne My guess would be the 70s and at the time a lot of money sunk into the place. The shots of the offices were brilliant both in terms of the light as well as the industrial history. Hate to think about the cost and viability of replacing some of that machinery though let alone whether it could be done. It really underlines the importance of the Phoenix project to succeed and how deserving it is of support. I've ordered my film, just disappointed that the light is disappointing at this time of year in northern England!
It's interesting to me that some of the photos were ones I would have taken, but many of them I would have just not even considered, but they came out wonderfully. That one of the sheep and the couple is excellent
I half expected that about the middle of the film...you were going to pull a Wizard of Oz and go from B&W to Color and start shooting the new color Phoenix film!!! :) Fun video....looked like a very interesting trip!!! CC
Really interesting video, gives you a really good perspective on how film is made. All those people who keep moaning about the cost of film going up really need to watch this because it's no easy thing to just increase production to meet high demand when you have all those different stages as well as machinery & trained staff to consider.
One of the best videos ever! So wonderful to see Ilford in action. Totally engrossing. No one better, than Grainydays and friend! Your images were superb. So nice ! I can't imagine the folks at K, giving such access. I love Ilford Film! and chemicals! Tri-X was my standard for generations! Yes! Then it changed, thinner base, curls like it's possessed. So quietly I left and went to Ilford. The new Phoenix film needs time! I posted an opinion on another site, that angered a lot! I was right! Lack of orange base, causes odd colors. But early days. Viva Ilford and Grainydays.
That tour was awesome! And the shots of the sheep we're great! I'm currently waiting for some Lady Grey 400 to be developed and got some Delta 3200 in the AE-1 to finish off, can't wait!
Awesome video, definitely a cool factory tour. Quite a few of the steps reminded me of when I worked at DuPont that manufactured Cellophane and Clysar shrink rap.
Fascinating video Jason. I felt like I was there too. Hope you didn’t hit your head too hard in that darkroom! Sounded like quite a thud! I bought 4 boxes of the Phoenix film and can’t wait to start testing it. I developed my first roll of C-41 film yesterday (Portra 400 120), so I’m ready. Yes that was a once in a lifetime tour, so thanks for sharing it with us, as well as the countryside in the area! Anthony.
That synthwave nods quite well to the vibe of Phoenix C41, 80s retro like. It is always very interesting to see how the manufacturers are, something that even 10-15 years ago was something of a Willy wonka black box.
It's interesting to compare Harman's process and factory to Kodak's (great series on @smartereveryday). I wonder how they handle pauses for spool changes.
Great video of the UK, and the tour of Ilford and how film is manufactured. You're making me want to buy and load up some Ilford Delta 400 and 3200. Awesome bangers!! Not to mention a great video at the end of an active day!!! New Bad Flashes videos make my day always nicer. I need to shoot some new Bangers!!!
That was awesome!! Loved the mini coating machine they have in R&D it was so cute. Is there extra Quality Control footage that you can release somewhere?
The whole video in BW fits pretty well with Ilford. I'm just wondering now what lighting they used when showing the emulsion and coating in the lab. Did you shoot under safelight and your camera picked it up so well that I can't tell from the BW conversion or was it just for show under normal lighting? Your pancake and syrup analogy was spot on :D Possible small error: 20:24: I suppose the base rolls aren't made of gelatin but PET or acetate. At least that's what film base is normally made out of.
Wonderful!! Thanks for taking us along on the tour. Feeling so much love for Ilford and all they are striving to do. You captured some great images. But, gotta ask what's up with the the cricket chripping sounds while walking outside at night.... we don't have them at the best of times! 😂
Hopefully an update to the Netflix documentary about your violent unsolved murder will feature one of those coffins. Another awesome video; thanks for taking us along on that tour.
Great to have you doing a film over here and love the factory tour. So cool you got to spend so much time at Ilford 👍 Doesn’t look like you got to see any of the North West’s famous “Dark Satanic Mills” they would have been perfect on Ilford 👍👍👍
My favorite part of the video is when the machine clearly says "Watches & rings to be removed when working on cascade" and then the woman making the tour touches it and has rings on.
I would like to welcome you to sunny England, but ... A) I'm too late by 8 months 😂 B) There is no sun 😂 PS: When ordering a pint of Guiness, remember to get the barman to let it settle and top up leaving only a small head on the pint .. 👌 👍
can vouch how good K400 even when pushed. I tried pushing it EI1600 using self-made parodinal and it's remarkable how it perform, more so considering its price
About 220 film, I love 220 as film transport in cameras is smoother, film flatness better, ... are they no more able to do it (missing machine) or do they just no more want to do it (low sales) ? I guess 90% of needed machines are the same for 120 and 220, or perhaps even all ?
this is so damn cool! pure magic. also for my black and white digital shots, i use an Illford preset that i love. I try to shoot a roll of Illford Pan 400 on a Pentax Mv1... but the camera its damaged, dont pull the roll or something else, so 0 images was taken... and i Use it for a project, i feel so sad for it, next time, i will use my Pentax K1000.
The green cast is because common Fluoro lighting is not equal across the full spectrum usually with a green and or greeny yellow spike that the film picks up.
Fun Fact, Jason didn't put a Black and White filter on this entire video, that's just how the UK looks.
Couldn’t agree more, this place is more post apocalyptic than any Hollywood blockbuster could ever dream of
Bit harsh. There is sun. I have seen it.
@@geoffmphotography9444 I kid. It's just as overcast here in Ireland. Pot calling the kettle black, or grey, in this case.
can confirm, the sun is just white, cant see snow for shit
Can confirm, UK actually stands for un-koloured
Jason is spoiling us with this increased regularity of video releases
I see that you made sure to hit the 10min mark, this is good
Its very odd seeing you shoot scenes I walk past every day and totally take for granted. Sometimes hard to appreciate what's in your own back garden
Yeah, I'm only ten miles away myself in Middlewich!!
I thought exactly the same
When you live somewhere as ugly as the USA, everything in the UK looks beautiful
Came here for the same comment! Up the Middlewich crew! Bizarre to see this isn’t it?
crazy isnt it
Unbelievable process. We are so lucky film is still being made.
Your M7 might be shooting on frame 11 because you have the mechanism on the inside of the backdoor set for running 220 film.

The machines in the factory are absolutely amazing.

@@johndewhirst3089And in Michigan. Got my film today, too.
I never realized an entire youtube video in black and white can look this good
Watching this reminds me that as mundane as the UK seems to me, to others it must seem as interesting as the Mojave desert does to me.
Real
It's interesting to me that some of the photos were ones I would have taken, but many of them I would have just not even considered, but they came out wonderfully.
That one of the sheep and the couple is excellent
Wowzers, that sheep and bench shot, wowzers! 🎉🎉🎉 Love the tour, new love for Harman/Ilford!
You have done Ilford and the world of film photography a great service with this excellent documentary - thank you 🙏
Bro is spoiling us with the uploads

I was waiting for a transition to color too! 😊
look at that, some nice pictures from the UK
I live just down the road from Knutsford, I wish I’d known you were here. Would have totally dressed up as Baxter and followed you around.
So funny seeing you walk around Knutsford
brings me joy to see my own mundane life brought onto film

looking forward to that ultra-large-format video you have now promised us
Thank you for showing the heart of Ilford, I appreciate you so much since I'm a Ilford boy all the way. Arigato from Japan!!!

love how much better video looks than stills. plus, oh well... simpler
Crazy seeing you walk around Knutsford, somewhere I used to live and work
That tour was awesome! And the shots of the sheep we're great! I'm currently waiting for some Lady Grey 400 to be developed and got some Delta 3200 in the AE-1 to finish off, can't wait!
i’ve been waiting years for a grainydays noir film
b&w vid goes crazy
Holy moly you should’ve asked where they’re keeping the secret reversal vault that stores their emergency flaming hot Mountain Dew stockpile.
The production, shooting style, backing music, and comedy are absolutely on point. Top work man!
Those synths in the intro be hitting

Love that you flew all the way accross the Atlantic to shoot in Knutsford of all places 😂
It's interesting to compare Harman's process and factory to Kodak's (great series on @smartereveryday). I wonder how they handle pauses for spool changes.
That sheep/bench portfolio shot is great. Really great.
Love the Depeche Mode style backing track.
Best „How it’s made“ Episode so far.
Something tells me that this is the first Jason has seen chemistry.
Excellent video.
That first photo is spectacular.
Very inspiring. Love the sheep portfolio shot!
Brilliant video!!! Possibly one of your best
I am LOVING those greens and reds pop!
Informative and entertaining and you made several very good photos - the foreground sheep and couple on the bench in the distance is excellent.

Whenever I get close to dumping the film gear for a Monochrom I watch one of your vids. Inspiration renewed. Thanks for that.
Strong Loki show TVA vibes at Ilford. Love it.
Insane, Knutsford is the only place I actually took photos of when I went to the UK for work a while ago. I even went to the same pub
Insanely beatiful black and white footage!
That was awesome!! Loved the mini coating machine they have in R&D it was so cute. Is there extra Quality Control footage that you can release somewhere?
Great doc. I still don't have a clue how this emulsions or what it's called work but nice to see a range of films you shot and the factory itself.
Very interesting. What is amazing is that someone invented these complex machines.
Feeling an ektachrome Christmas video around the corner after this
Portfolio Piece at 43:03. Wow! 😍
your thumbnails are always so beautiful
Must have been fluorescent lighting for those Phoenix photos to have come out green
hey man you probably wont see this but been watching you for years and i live right next to knutsford. Love your stuff!
Great show thank you grainydaze
seeing ur room in B/W....moving fujifilm air baloon to the right and then ilford to the left...this video is just epic

Black and White intro... nniicceee.

did the airport handcheck all that 3200???

What camera are you shooting the B&W video with?... It looks incredible... Kindah Leicaish?....
