I have had shin splints during my 20's. To the point where I'd play football at lunch time on my breaks and after, I'd have to sit for an hour to recover a little. It gradually got better over time. I'm 40 now and still get what I call "shin pump" when I walk. This then causes my shins to ache and feel like they're heavy and stiff below the knee to my ankle.
@@mohamedraihan.n7291 u gotta strengthen and stretch your legs. if u still have it try doing toe raises, calf raises, and find ways to strength your hips and glutes
This was the best video / tips I have yet to read or watch. Thank you! Very articulate, and clear. I have suffered with shin splints for years and the pain sometimes comes very quickly when I rollerblade or showboard and is extremely painful. Lately it flares up when I just walk, even for 4 blocks. I will try these methods to course correct and strengthen. Thank you!
Best thing for shin splints is swimming, you shouldn’t waste ur time all these techniques. 1-2 hour of swimming a week should get rid of them completely. Will get results straight away 👍🏼
@@Bholmes17 thank you very much for the tip. My shin splints are so bad, so I will try that (once pools open again in my city of course). I appreciate your tip.
How are you doing now? Any progress? I’ve been suffering from MTSS for over 2 years. After long periods it got better, only a very short run brought it back. It’s so frustrating.
You can switch running to swimming/biking/elyptical and use the time to hit the gym doing a lot of leg routines. That way you can use that time to recover + strengthen + keeping most of your fitness
It's better than 7week rest. I had some pain and continued, doing good warmups and stretches. 7 weeks gone. Or what you could do is half the distance you run and right after running do other cardio workouts for 10-20 min.

I’ve had a shin splint for the last six weeks. Lately after 2 miles it starts becoming painful and then as I’m running it goes away. It keeps coming and going during my runs. My leg also goes limp for a second , then goes away. This happens every 10 minutes during my runs Is periodic limpness while running also a symptom of a shin splint?
It happens to me sometimes too, where it comes and goes. The answer is that it's highly likely that you have shins splints. Don't make the same mistake I did and rest and heal now before the pain starts to stick for longer and longer until you have pain the whole run
I hear "if you are suffering from shin splints, take a few days off and rest your legs." Would doing any of the strengthening excercises in this video interrupt that healing/resting process and thus be counterproductive for rehab purposes? I have just started running in the past two weeks and feel shin splints after my second one mile run in two weeks. Thus I want to strengthen but also not accelerate the compounding of the existing problem.
It’s probably becuase you’re heel striking while running ( landing on the heel while running) it’s hard at first but try to fix it I still find myself guilty of doing it and do the stuff in the video
@@vladonaldputrump8287 Since writing this comment, I have begun running regularly. I do these heel walks twice a week for 200-300 meters (2-3 distances of a football field) and make sure to do a 10 minute warmup and 10ish minute cooldown each run. In addition, I stretch deeply on my non-running days. This has largely alleviated my issues that I had during the first few weeks. I am only running 5-8 miles per week, however. I hope that my injury prevention continues as I continue increasing my mileage.
@@Liljoozy I do the same after even walking started to hurt my shins. Feels like only way to avoid excess stress on shins is by very gradually increasing mileage
When you say 20 steps one way then 20 steps the other way, do you mean turn round and walk back or do you mean 20 steps forwards and then 20 steps actually walking backwards?

Because of this pain on my shin, i cant run fast again.
I don't know if i have fracture or shin splints because I don't feel the pain at night or morning(unless I press on it) I feel the pain after stopping mid run.
Hmm lump on a muscle or on the bone? The first might be from a muscle tear that healed over time the other from something exerting force on the bone. As an example, I have lumps on my shins from working on ladders and resting my shins on the rungs for a long periods of time.
It's an injury that results from overworking certain muscles, exercising (overworking them even more) will only make it worse. You gotta take it easy and rest till it's healed.

Heat might alleviate the pain temporarily but it won't lessen the inflammation
