I already posted on Twitter that the Austrian refinery in Schwechat was damaged two years ago. Here's the verbatim comment from OMV: "OMV informs that a mechanical incident occurred today at the Schwechat refinery which has been undergoing its maintenance turnaround since 19 April 2022. Two persons were slightly injured. The incident has damaged the main distillation unit for crude oil." Now the main distillation unit was only damaged, nothing really serious. However, the repairs took 6 months. As I said, a minor incident. OMV has all the support it needs and it still took six months. Six months!! I applaud the Ukranian strategy of systematically taking out distillation towers. Obviously hard to repair. Even more so without Western help. I guess the Russians are screwed. It will be interesting this summer to see how the Russians cope with lack of Diesel, petrol, kerosene, asphalt, etc. As the Romans said, Vae Victis.
There have been comments that it could take 2 to three years to fix the towers, not sure what effect sanctions will have. It must add delay and add expense for them to attempt to bypass sanctions.
We will keep supporting your channel and Ukraine. I will vote to support Ukraine. I will continue to write to my representatives in Virginia. Unfortunately, she is Republican of the idiotic sort in the House but my Virginia senators are Democras who support Ukraine.

More important than the loss of refinery capacity is that, if they cannot refine it, they must stop pumping it out of the ground. Once a well shuts down it may take months or years to re-open.

The atmospheric and vacuum distillation columns are very old technology that Russia should not need western technology to replace. However, they feed everything else in a refinery and so are a weak link. In a wartime economy, they might be able to get those rebuilt in 4-6 months. I’ve speculated that after degrading the crude units (the atmospheric and vacuum distillation systems) that Ukraine will then go after the hydrocrackers, fcc units, and hydrotreaters. Those units will take longer to replace.
