  • ► Check out my Osaka Food Guide for details on restaurants in these videos: migrationology...
On Day 11, we were back in Osaka after a quick trip to Kyoto, and we woke up to do some sightseeing, and to eat some more delicious Japanese food in Osaka.
00:23 Shitennoji Temple - To start our day in Osaka, we first headed over to the Shitennoji Temple, one of the oldest and most well known temples in Osaka. We walked around for a few minutes, but unfortunately the lookout point that I wanted to see was under construction, so couldn’t go inside, but it was still nice to visit.
2:19 Kushikatsu Daruma (串カツだるま) - The area of Shinsekai in Osaka is known throughout the city for a Japanese food called kushikatsu, a homegrown Osaka creation. One of the most famous restaurants is Kushikatsu Daruma (串カツだるま), and since there was no line, we decided to give it a try. I didn’t think I was going to like kushikatsu all that much, but I have to admit that it was pretty good - all sorts of deep fried items on stick, with a delicious dipping sauce.
7:08 Sumiyoshi Taisha (住吉大社) - After kushikatsu and walking around the Shinsekai area for a while, we caught the tram to Sumiyoshi Taisha (住吉大社) temple. One of the most famous things there is the bridge, which was beautiful. I would highly recommend visiting Sumiyoshi Taisha (住吉大社) when you visit Osaka, Japan.
9:32 Conveyor belt sushi - For lunch we headed back to Osaka and to Namba Station, and we had a quick meal at a conveyor belt sushi restaurant. Plates were 129 JPY, and overall it was good. I think most people go for the quick sushi, and it’s pretty fun.
12:18 Dotonbori (道頓堀) - After doing some work back at our apartment for a few hours, we headed back out into Osaka, and did some walking around and sightseeing at Dotonbori (道頓堀), one of the most famous area of Osaka.
12:56 Osaka Ohsho - King of Gyoza - Before having dinner, we had a plate of gyoza at Osaka Ohsho - King of Gyoza, right in Dotonbori, which was pretty good.
14:05 Ikkaku (一鶴 心斎橋店) - For dinner we headed to a restaurant called Ikkaku (一鶴 心斎橋店), right in the Shinsaibashi area. They specialize in chicken, and they have both old and young chicken which you can choose from. We got both types of chicken, and I think the young chicken might have been the juiciest chicken in Osaka. It was amazing, a bit salty, but incredibly flavorful.

Before commenting about how to eat the sushi, I just want to say, your video is awesome, a little bit over reaction, but it's okay.
Now, first of all, that's not how you eat with wasabi. when you want to eat wasabi, put the wasabi paset in one plate like you did but not so widespreed and when you want to eat the sushi with it, you take little portion of the wasabi and and put it on the the top of the sushi with your chopstick. It will make more elegant and not put a mess on the sushi itself.
Second, when you eat sushi with soyu, and the sushi you have is difficult to dip it, you can pour a little bit at the top of the sushi. That's why, it will not messed up you plate and it will make you eating more better rather dropping the sushi or the rice. Especially it's more into sense of etiquette.
And that's that. Love your video really!

    • @tinyspaceliving
      @tinyspaceliving 9 лет назад +1

Thank you. It bugs me every time he mixes wasabi with sauce. Also he should be dipping the protein part so he won't mess up the rice in his sushi.

+Ralphie_Boy The restaurants that have those huge petri dish communal sauce bowls like that could solve the problem simply providing each diner with an initial supply of sauce and allowing them to ask for more if they run out.
The other thing I have noticed about Japanese dining through watching videos is that is also very common to have little condiment vessels of wasabi, ginger, garlic, chili, whatever. And the only way to get the stuff off the tiny serving spoon is to tap the spoon or smear all over your plate. To think of how many people do that...

Thank you Mark for suggesting this chicken place in Osaka! We visited Japan last week and were lucky to stop by for an early dinner at Ikkaku. No words can describe the juiciness and the flavors that the baby chicken released with each bite. We stuffed ourselves and also packed some to enjoy late at night 🤩 wish they had branches in every city 🤤

if you want a good taste of chicken, make sure its a wild variety. the one that fed more of organic stuff. as it is just like free in the wild. dress the chicken with soysauce (of course with its skin completely peeled off the feathers), cut off all the internal organs... roast it in medium fire, until it juices out all its fat, then turn into high fire to crisp its skin. the cooking time will take minimum of 45 mins.
the key is slow cooking plus no frozen meat, just the chicken after it was slaughtered.

You’re picking up the sushi wrong:-) And, it’s actually acceptable to pick-up sushi with your fingers...And, to dab your sushi with wasabi using your fingers too...:-) I learned over two years Japanese table etiquette:-) DOING A GOOD THING, MARK...Dining, cuisine, manners and sitting at the same table always unites.

    Hello Mark and Ying
That was a very nice video!
Kushikatsu is a tasty snack, but as often happens in Japan, does not value for money the. The quality of their ingredients are always top, but I also have very good eaten elsewhere in the world at lower prices. But this is Japan, they spend lots of money for food. In many restaurants you will not get full.
The chicken looked so delicious. I immediately got hungry. Had they not grilled chicken skin? as the Yakitori chicken style? Chicken Skin is incredible .Cool video keep up ! I always look forward to the next one.
As always, thumbs up for your video.
See you at the next Video.

Hi mark, just saw your video of Osaka. You had footage of the Glico man...that athlete was actually modeled after our relative...his name was Fortunato Catalon. He was a world class sprinter from the Philippines in the 1920's and won 9 gold medals in the Asian games.

If you have a time, Nara Todaiji Daibutu, Kouhukuji, Nara Park, and Nara-Machi (Harushika-sake, Meat shop deep fried food) are recommended.

Okay, so I don't know if Japanese television has the best facts, but apparently Osaka locals rarely eat kushikatsu. If you ask some random Otchan (old men) or Okan (Married women with children) in the Shinsekai area, they might not even have dried it in there lifetime. Strange.

To make "older chicken" tender, the preferred cooking method is braising over low heat (simmering) for a long time. A popular French dish that comes to my mind is "coq au vin" ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coq_au_vin ). It is not called "poulet au vin" because the French traditionally use an older bird (cock or hen) for this dish.

+honeypiesweet03 when eating toro tuna you need to put alot of wasabi in it because it's so fatty that the wasabi helps to cut thru it.

My man, Mark. It is looked down upon to dip any Sushi into Shoyū or Wasabi (especially mixed together), because the rice is the "star" of the dish, not the protein...than again, who cares. Enjoy bruddah!

The sushi is actually very cheap. Just $16 for the both of you? That's very cheap. I know that Japan isn't as cheap as say, Thailand or Vietnam, but these are both third world countries. There's just no comparison.

I have been to that temple but did not to the top as well, they are always working on the pagoda. I have had the fried food like that but not what I enjoy. That sign has been around for so many years, it has been updated but has been there since I was a child. Gyoza you can never go wrong. The chicken looked good, you tore that chicken up mark.lol

Those strict soy sauce rules are obviously because they reuse it and for the price of your menu item, I would say it's pretty f*kin dumb to do that, while charging people 16 bucks for that snack...
