Stedan Edberg and Patrick Rafter are very similar, they play like gods (their serve n' volley, together with that of john mcenroe, is the best), are so humble and respected by practically everyone in the World of Tennis. So great persons.
Edberg's 1991 US Open was his most dominating title. Sweden was so good in men's tennis in the 80's and early 90's. Incredible as Sweden is a cold weather country.
This is an amazing achievement considering Becker leads the series 25-10. Stefan is the king of key moments though as Sampras’ fan this final hurts a lot… but not as that with Hewitt in 2001.
The last hug equals all grand slam winnings..... What a player..... Great to watch winning those all grand lams with good competitors..... GREAT ONE.... TQ...
Even mine also. I followed him and the era he played was the golden era of tennis. Becker, Lendl, Wilander, Agassi, Sampras, Courier, Stich, Ivanisevic,Chang and many others. He was no.1 player in the world for long time.
last vs Sampras with Italian commentary on +2 , my goodness ... so many memories. Those were the days (years): I was eating, sleeping and watching tennis, sometimes playing it too :)
I recall watching the three Wimbledon finals against Becker and the two U.S. Open wins. He absolutely dismantled Courier in 1991. Can't imagine there are many more men's Grand Slam finals in which the winner was so dominating.
I feel Australian Open 1990 is lacking.... a final that Edberg was dominating, ruined by an abdominal injury.... and Roland Garros 1989, most painful loss ever.... those cursed 10 break points in the 4th set.... a nightmare
@BetaOnPurposeLMS-coach Edberg was injuried in second set, he had won 1st set and was serving for second set after making a break. Than he couldn’t shot any smash and couldn’t serve strong anymore and in those terrific condition he lost 2nd set and retired 2-5 in the 3rd
Yeah, but Michael Chang was a great winner too, and i was happy for him. That French open was the one moment where my love for tennis started. I found his match vs Lendl in 1/4 final extraordinary !

I have read some comments that Edberg and the others back then wouldn't be top players these days - I think the opposite. Would like to see today's guys try to stand Edberg's volleys or Borg's base line shots...
@@othersideimages not nearly to the same extent. I think it's a pretty meaningful difference. how could it not be, given differences in equipment and technique?
@@DaggerMan11 Who knows - I think that different equipment would have made Edberg's volleys more dangerous, too. I myself for instance played with wood and graphite rackets, the equipment neutralizes the respective strenghts - but hey - we will never know...
Truly great players of one era would adjust their game accordingly. We are talking about one of the greatest players of the open era and he would have surely adjusted.
Yes, AO was usually played in December. 1985 edition was actually the last one organized at the end of the year. In 1986 there was no AO tournement, while in January 1987 this championship resumed to be run.
Edberg and Federer, the reason why I love tennis so much.
Edberg not only the best volley ,also the best gentleman
Agree...a true gentleman and so humble
very true

Edberg...play the beauty of tennis

My childhood Tennis hero and my all time Tennis fav.
Those 2 US Open titles embarrassing Courier (flawless match) and defeating Pete were Edberg’s greatest achievements.
His 2nd Wimbledon title in 1990 is next to them.
Edberg matches up well head-to-head with anybody. Always at the net, and tennis' best volleyer.
Edberg was such a legend. Winning record against Boris, Ivan and PETE in slams. Goat volleyer imo
I like Edberg better but Becker held a 25-10 H2H over him.
@@talbotdavis1225 in the final won always Edberg!!!!

The 91 USO final v. Courier is the best I ever saw anyone play in the era before poly strings and The Big Three.
The last hug equals all grand slam winnings..... What a player..... Great to watch winning those all grand lams with good competitors..... GREAT ONE.... TQ...
Edberg used to wear some brilliant classic Adidas shirts
My childhood tennis hero
Mine too, together with john mcenroe. I know, two opposite personalities! But i did adore their way of serve n' volley
Even mine also. I followed him and the era he played was the golden era of tennis. Becker, Lendl, Wilander, Agassi, Sampras, Courier, Stich, Ivanisevic,Chang and many others. He was no.1 player in the world for long time.
@sudeepsengupta2906 that was the best period for me,when you had proper net players and fast courts
Grande Stefan! My favourite player, so elegant.

I always used to watch tennis with my grandfather and when I see this I think of him. RIP Runo Rajgård x
Edbergs last slam win was incredible. Think he won 3 or 4 5 setters to defend the title. Great champion and all around classy player.
That Roland Garros 1989 final should’ve been here. So close.
True, especially since that the extreme heat (33C) affect Michael Chang quite a bit.
I remember watching this final… Best RG he has ever played…
Better player doesn’t always win. Would have been nice for Edberg to achieve the career slam
What a graceful player.
Best backhand volley ever

Ma jeunesse, 2 très grand champion, mon préféré Mr. Edberg
Un des plus grands volleyeur !!!! Grande classe !!!!
LE plus grand...
I always remember his game, going to the net almost every point.
adoravo edberg, l'ho tifato esattamente come la mia squadra del cuore allo stesso livello 💙💙💙
The best Edbergs
Was perhaps the most handsome tennis player of the time !!
I always thought Edberg fitted his shorts extremely well. His tennis wasn't bad either.
His shorts fit sinfully well 😈
That 89 french open final still hurts me

Such a shame he couldn't win that 1989 French Open final.

Chang deserved it, huge underdog, edberg got 6 slams. That was Chang’s only slam
Agreed. Stefan had that in the palm of his hand. Wish he had won that to make it 7 slams instead of 6.
Edberg could have won it all, one of the best serve and volleys of all time....
Roland Garros is cursed for so many huge players. Maybe less nowadays as it was made faster and the other grandslam surfaces slower.
My favorite player during many years... until Federer appears.
Didn't Edberg coach Federer for a while from memory?
@@dagorian86 Yes, he did, in 2014-2016.
@@dagorian86 If their partnership started earlier, Stefan could probably help Federer achieve a bit more. Edberg was a smart tactician on court.

a very overrated player though. he got lucky, but he was really not all that good!

Interesting that he won them in pairs.
Apart from Wimbledon.
Clerici Tommasi, ricordo benissimo la telecronaca ❤
Reaction on his first Grand Slam title is like: "Ok I got it..."
Edberg schooled Courier at USO 91 and Courier had his revenge in 92 AO but that match was not one sided.
Love the 1986/88 Adidas polo logo’s. Name of the designer?! 🙏🏻👌🏻
My top ten ever,,,,
1.Roger Federer
2.Stefan Edberg
3.Pete Sampras
4.Andre Agassi
5.Boris Becker

10.Gustavo Kuerten
not many people attended ao back then 🤨
I dont see roland garros match point

Amazing how they managed to play with those transparent balls.
In 1985, was Wimbledon played before the Australian Open? Because they said Boris won?
Yes, AO was usually played in December. 1985 edition was actually the last one organized at the end of the year. In 1986 there was no AO tournement, while in January 1987 this championship resumed to be run.
At 2:26, Becker goes right at Edberg from just a few feet away. Bad karma. The tennis gods made him dump it into the net, ha ha.
But in the 1985 final there was a pandemic going on? Practically empty stands! It looked like an amateur tournament final 😐
The two Aussie open wins shouldn't have really counted as grand slam wins.. Many players didn't consider it a grand slam
I don't why I am big fan of edberg, leaving big stars
That first at AO looks very not final like match with empty seets
