Love these keychain consoles, you can take them everywhere with you, and not only strain your eyes but also give yourself painful hand cramps! The mobile versatility of it all!
See the thing is I don't either of those are problems unless you're trying to fit a whole gaming session on them which I feel misses the point of them. First and foremost they're a novelty of course but I've been using my FunKey S for the past year or so as a thing to use on breaks or when I'm stuck by a train, so 10-20 minute spans of time, and it's been phenomenal. Been playing Breath of Fire on it and given the short play times I don't have to charge it much at all. So I can understand the derision but I feel like it's not coming from the right place and I think there's definitely a good spot for these sorts of things on the market.
I just got a blue Nano from Amazon Prime Day for $48 which sealed the deal for me. I am a beginner plug and play senior citizen who loves all handhelds, switch and the retro ones, 16 in total. I have watching your channel for years. It makes me happy to see how your channel has grown. One of the reasons I watch your channel is you are always so detailed and thorough with information about the handhelds including positives, negatives and your honest opinion which is extremely helpful. I couldn’t remember how to change the interface and so I watched your review for the second time and there it was and so very simple. Thanks for all your hard work on your video reviews as they are so helpful to so many of us here in the gaming retro community.
I mean, this seems like a really good gift for my nephew. >Aluminum so it won't break easy >Small so perfect for him (6yrs old) >Short battery life so his mom doesn't kill me and he can't just play all day I just hope theres an OS or way to change it to fast boot into an easier directory. I have a modded firestick with games which I set up for him, and it instantly boots into a menu with "games" & "shows", which are emulators & streaming respectively. If this was $20-30 cheaper and booted into just an SNES/GBA/GameGear etc,. Emulater, it would be perfect for giving to kids on like road trips or something. Lower the power & price, add bluetooth and better battery life, limit volume, and you're perfect for that kind of thing.
I posted a picture with a bunch of small handhelds in my Community tab if you’d like to see a direct comparison. I couldn’t resist making the Steam Deck joke in this video.
@@TheSanctus17 Of course there's also no way to ever order one of those again, which is the real pity. I'm so glad I have my Miyoo mini as well as my Miyoo mini Plus.
@@fryke The Miyoo mini is no longer available, but the Miyoo plus is being restocked and is still readily available. I would spend the money for that over the Nano.
I love the size and form factor. But no sleep mode is a deal breaker. A small novelty system like this was literally made for pick up and play whenever you have the time. That's why I'll keep my Trimui Model S instead.
Kinda makes one wish they would use this software in a 1:1 DMG shell and forget about X, Y, L, R buttons. They could tweak the software, so it'd just directly jump into the autosave state (as the FunKey S does, or OnionOS on the Miyoo mini devices). And we could finally have just very nice, big A and B buttons as Nintendo originally intended.
Mostly picking up for the novelty and to add to the collection, but genuinely see myself keeping it in my pocket to play gbc pokemon while commuting etc. The larger devices make my already heavy work bag even heavier, so having something absolutely tiny basically just to do something with my hands (that can't accidentally become replying to work emails) is actually ideal
Considering the price and it's uselessness I don't need to worry about putting it out in open because solely on those two things I will never own such things. But for other keychain things yeah it's attention seeking and the wrong kind of attention. Depends where you live but nowadays I don't trust anyone or anything any more ...
For that price I expect more power and features but I do like how these tiny machines look. Hopefully they get cheaper eventually as it would be nice to have a set of quick games just to have around or hanging off a bag or something.
I cannot express how exciting this is to me. I had a bunch of those “Nintendo Mini Classic” game & watches back in the 90’s, and I’ve always wanted to put a little LCD in one… this is exactly that, only better! Will definitely have to add a Game & Watch and Pokémon Mini emulator to it.
I was curious whether or not this was going to be another Funkey clone. The metallic shell and the colored buttons are a nice touch, but until one these micro devices comes out with a larger screen aspect ratio, I think I'm just gonna stick with my Funkey S. The convenience of the sleep mode clamshell design just makes it much more sensible for an everyday traveler, plus I like how comfortably I can hang it on my keys without it feeling too clunky. Still, a neat little device on anbernic's part.
I know it's a novelty and pricey but I immediately bought one after watching the video. I already have an Analogue Pocket and hacked Vita for proper portable GBA/SNES/PS1 gaming. I do a lot of bikepacking and hiking with ultra light equipment and never wanted to bring a handheld because of weight, size and the fear of breaking it. This is a great way to play a quick Mario Picross or Pokemon session before going to sleep. Not for everyone but for me. Let's see if the firmware will get some improvements via update.
Was considering getting one of these, but the resolution kills it for me. NES, SNES, SMS, Turbo Grafx, Pico-8, and others would have worked perfectly w/ 256×256 pixels, but 240x240 means all will either be badly scaled or have part of the image cut off.
Would've liked to see a size comparison with a Miyoo Mini or RG280V. Think the Nano is intriguing in concept as a one-handed Pokemon machine. But for $65+ it's too exoensive for what it is imo. Think I'll try to snag an og Miyoo Mini if they have stock later this month like I've heard some people mention.
I put this in one of the comments but i'll put it on the main too, i think people approach micro handhelds wrong. It's always eye strain or hand cramps but you're looking at it in terms of long play sessions (or it happens after just a few minutes and only God can sort you out there) but i adore my FunKey S and i'll adore this too because it fits in my work shirt chest pocket and i use it when i'm on my breaks or when i'm stuck by a train or just have a few minutes of downtime regardless of where i am. For 10-20 minutes of Breath of Fire or even something more fast paced it's perfect and i don't have any of those issues, bonus points for making the battery go waaay further too. I don't really understand the "accidentally press all the buttons" thing either, i have huge hands but don't have issues so i guess don't unga bunga so hard. The only point i'll really agree with is yeesh that price tag but even then it takes a lot of RND to make tech small, with other small handhelds you can usually pull chips, boards, screens, buttons etc from elsewhere but with small tech it's usually custom or small batch so i kinda get it.
Just a note, normally aluminium isn't just painted, it's actually anodised. It's a type of protective coating for aluminium that prevents corrosion. It doesn't flake, peel, or blister like paint.
Interesting to see if the screen is running in 50hz or 60hz. At launch Funkey S screen was 50hz, this issue has now been fixed by the Funkey S team and you need to apply DrUm78's custom OS for the 60hz fix.
I love my Rg280v and play it all the time. The thought of another tiny handheld from Anbernic had me interested, but for for over $60, you're getting close to real handheld money. Simply too expensive imo. Maybe a great stocking-stuffer for later this year, though.
I love Anbernic for this. They already saw the FunKey and said "Ok clamshell is covered, so we'll make ours a vertical regular gameboy shell for those who don't want the FunKey's clamshell model".
When I first saw the thumbnail I wondered if it was an April Fools video you forgot to post… Something I love about RGC (and hope never changes) is how when Russ announces he’s going to try and keep it short, you know you’ve got a good 15-20 minutes left 😂
@TheMysteryDriver I think 8 bit stuff would be all I'd want to play on it with this small size anyway. Sega Master System, Nintendo Entertainment System, and Gameboys are generally made with simplicity in mind. They aren't made for playing any more than small bursts. So I think these very small handheld lioe this would be better dropping two face buttons to make 8 bit systems games more comfortable to play.
Nice to see that technology evolved to this point, where the device can be this small...but its way too small for me...the miyoo Mini V1/V2 is the perfect fit to me ..
I've been considering getting a funkey s for a while now, but this might be what I go for. I have a miyoo mini, but something even smaller to show off pico-8 games would be awesome
Question, why don't they make one in 3:2 or 4:3? Just make the device slightly bigger with a better aspect ratio and it would be a win IMO. Should have been competition for Miyoo Mini rather than compete with Funkey. Just make a Miyoo Mini clone with metal shell and the usual Anbernic d-pad and buttons and you have a winner.
Well there is ALWAYS a trade off between portability and comfort. My friend always wants BIG BIG BIG and seems to not be aware of or recognize that if something isn't portable, it wont be with you, so it doesnt matter how big and comfortable it is if you cant carry it in your jeans pocket without annoyance. If I bring 2 psp gos, he refuses to play them because the screen is too small according to him. So the end result is no gaming at all. At home there is zero need for portability, so you can have huge devices such as a PC or home console hooked up to a big screen TV. Most consoles are actually too big and heavy to not be annoying in your jeans pocket for the time you aren't at home. 90 percent of the time you ARENT using the console. I had the miyoo mini for awhile but it broke and I went back to using a psp go. I do like something that fits in the coin pouch of my jeans, which offers minimal or no discomfort when it isnt being used. (i.e. 90% of the time). Actually the 8bitdo Zero 2 is probably superior to this device in that the dpad and buttons are about the same but you can use it with your phone which you will no doubt be carrying anyhow. There are now browser based emulators for IOS which require no jailbreaking or questionable apps either. And there are clever ways to attach it to your phone as well or just use separately. I may just stick with the 8bitdo zero 2 when I need extreme portability.
For people who are a bit turned off because of the screen size, text size in Game Boy games are around the size of the text you're reading right now on your smartphone.
@Wicked Gamer & Collector Right? I love how our community has different many different channels. All with different perspectives for different parts of the system. Russ is my go-to for button feel. There are channels for different things I've seen before that have dead space with mindless, unrelated talking. I think one thing that contributes to quality content in MY opinion is, enjoyable information brought to you in a way that's wasting my time talking about the same time restated, like 20 different ways. I love the RG community and how close knit everyone is
Better than the Thumby. I can imagine buying this if I had an expendable income but the no sleep mode kinda kills the convenience of the micro form factor lol
first instinct- if the screen/ form is so small, might as well make an improved version of the Anbernic retro mini - with a better (slightly larger screen (today they could fit a bigger better screen in that case) and better FirmWare, and better performance. This Nano appears even smaller and buttons too close to make this really user friendly. They released the 280V, which is yes a step up and improves a lot, but I'd love a vertical retro mini with a better screen and better FW / performance. AND I love the 2 button format on that guy but doesn't matter, 4 or 2 buttons. Whats the latest update on the new RG35xx?!?!
I played on stock firmware PSX Grand Turismo 1 and it runs fine. I played Tekken 3. It has those jittery sound but still very playable. Not as worse as yours. I can even do 10 hit combos. Mine has NES Contra. It's hacked which I always have Spread as default ammo and infinite life.
Ugh, I had the Miyoo Mini and it was just too small for me. This one would definitely be too small for me. I would have loved this and the MM when I was in grade school but my hands are just too large. I'd get this for a kid but not really for an adult. Every retro handheld needs a USB drive mode, that would be really handy. Getting the SD cards in and out is kinda a pain when getting everything the way you want. It isn't needed but it is a nice feature.
Tricky thing about this is it doesn't have the clamshell like the FunKey S so I see it as actually less portable because the FKS you can close toss in your pocket with keys or whatever else in there and go, completely case-less. The build and design of this look pretty good though, but for someone like me with the FunKey and the Q36 it's a bit redundant since the FKS is a good 1-hand turn based rpg machine and just overall more mobile and the Q36 is a good two-hand machine for more action oriented games with its wider layout and buttons.
I don’t think anyone is expecting to use this for extended gaming sessions. The Funkey S is smaller than this, and it is perfect for grinding RPG’s while waiting in line, or at the doctor’s office or something.
@@WickedGamerCollector Unfortunately not near enough Da cheap 2 da cheap cheap! To justify a purchase of this product. You're the only other channel on Russ's level. Love your guys' content!
I never see the point of having a screen protector on any handheld console unless it's a touch screen you have to use. I would prefer to have a hard carrying case accessory instead.
Hey Russ a big fan from Hungary! I want to ask that after sooo many retro (style) handhelds could you do a video about the Sony PSP? I think it holds up pretty well, because the PSP library is massive and it is a great emulation machine for SNES, GBA and PS1. It's my go to console for GBA games. 😊
Finally a successor to the gameboy micro! Actually reminds me of when I played Doom on the Sansa Clip+ via rockbox. Not only were the screen and buttons tiny but the screen is an old school oled so it's very low resolution and only one color so it's essentially impossible to see where you are going or enemies. Haha perhaps the most impractical way to play Doom and there's alot of competition on that.
I'm probably going to skip on the RG nano due to it's size and hardware/firmware limitations. It is cute, though. I do prefer the grid based menus since you can see much more on the screen at a time and often results in fewer button presses to get to your destination. I really would like to see a grid based theme for EmulationStation for our Anbernic devices. The default scrolling carousel, you can't even see what systems are only a couple button presses away and it's just so claustrophobic to me. I spend more time trying to find the system than just having a decent grid layout where we can see right away what we're going for and just moving a cursor to it. I'm going to skip on the RG35XX, too, but that grid selection - I gotta give it some credit there.
For a small device I think just a bit smaller than the 35xx is the smallest that makes sense. Maybe something like 2.5 inch 3:4, no bezels. This one, with this small form factor and the premium shell, looks more like an accessory that actually works, but would still be used just as a cosmetic accessory 99.9% of the time. Strap it to your keys or to your bag and hope nobody snatch it kind of device
It's neat. I'd get it as a novelty, but it's pretty frustrating that it'd probably end up costing me like $90+ to get it to Europe. I'm glad we're finally getting some decent sub $100 handhelds from Anbernic and Powkiddy, but it would be nice to see something like the v90 again. I may still end up buying it, but when I consider how many things I can enjoy gaming-wise for nearly 100 bucks, it's not top of the list for me.
Too small for my fingers and the screen is too small for me as well. Not for me but im sure there r some people who prefer the smaller screen. I prefer the 5 inch plus devices. Thanks 4 another great video Russ❤. Where is Chicken???
Too small to be a fun device to play for me. I think Miyoo Mini is the smallest i would go. It is nice for a starting conversation but nothing else IMO.
If it were a horizontal device, I'd buy it in a heartbeat, as I've been dreaming of an all metal replacement for my A66. Gotta get rid of the Skittles buttons though.
Not sure about the sleep mode. I powered off by the button and when I hit the button again I was where I left off. Isn't that a sleep mode? There isn't a selection from the menu, but this appears to do the same thing. It said it was shutting down so I assume its not using power. Didn't notice the heat, it got warm but never hot. Agree the build quality is really good. Not sure if a little bigger screen would matter much. Text size is an issue on any handheld, even switch and steamdeck have issues with text size with much larger screens. Especially for games that were built for TV. The rest of the limits are just well...physics. Only so much you can do. Agree its a novelty item. Though I am surprised how often I have put it in my pocket and brought it along. It really is easy to bring with you. Its great for pokemon and zelda where you just want to goof around with it a bit. Its the second device, maybe a show off item. Its probably best as a gift for a gamer. I don't know if it was just me but several square soft and other ps1 games where in Chinese and I could not find a way to get them to English. But yeah...second device not a primary.
It's there any way to use a button combo to actually register L2/R2 on PS1. Because without those a lot of PS1 games are off the table. Symphony of the Night relies on 3 of the 4 shoulders for transformations which are necessary to progress through the map.
In my country, i have anbernic official and the price after launch promotion is higher than 35XX. This is one of anbernic product in the past few years that i do not buy due to it’s price. Purchasing another one 35XX with difference color is a prefer option for me although i already 35XX

I've been considering getting a funkey s for a while now, but this might be what I go for. I have a miyoo mini, but something even smaller to show off pico-8 games would be awesome
Great gift for a kid... Really cute and well built! 😊
God this is dumb. I want it.

@@bloozism Yup. Solid way to pass time. You get to feel intelligent and superior and you’re performing a public service. Win win.
If you just wanted a device to play through the old Pokémon games then this is perfect ⚡
I already own a Steam Deck so this will be the device I have with me whenever I don't want to carry around such a big device.
'Fanny pack' still brings joy to these British eyes and ears. I guess it does sit above the fanny as well. 😄
wish this was closer to a gba micro in form factor... can't picture actually playing anything on a vertical layout this small...
Amazing. I never expected to discover new music while watching an RGC video. Cheers Russ - your friend Jim is very talented.
Your boy Jim got some sick ass beats, my dude!
As a GB Studio game dev I really want one of these but would like a nice silicone case and screen protector!
I just want a GB Micro clone in metal. Give me that wide style!
My old GBMicro was the fucking coolest and I miss it so much. Best handheld I've ever had and yet it gets almost no love
Look up TrimUI smart
You mean like the RG300X ?
@@v0Ray0v Too big and plasticy.
For people who are a bit turned off because of the screen size, text size in Game Boy games are around the size of the text you're reading right now on your smartphone.
Previewed some tracks from that Our Ghosts album. Straight fire 🔥 🔥 🔥
Nano sized review?
*looks at time* Yup, Russ achieved that! Only 24 minutes!
Now to finish the rest of the video lol😅
Love it how indepth he can go with handhelds 😁
Anbernic never ceases to disappoint me.
I love this!
I really wish anbernic will release something soon a bit bigger than this. Hopefully the same size as the miyoo mini since that is gone now
first instinct- if the screen/ form is so small, might as well make an improved version of the Anbernic retro mini - with a better (slightly larger screen (today they could fit a bigger better screen in that case) and better FirmWare, and better performance.
Yea and mine had no thermal problems when transfering files.
Miyoo:we have the smallest gameboy.
anbernic:hold my beer
I see myself buying this for my 4yo old. I still think this is awesome!!
I love the colored buttons that Anbernic has been using. Reminds me of an Xbox 360 controller buttons
You can actually just hold the power button for 3 seconds and it'll go I to eep mode. Turn it back on and it goes back to where u left off
Tricky thing about this is it doesn't have the clamshell like the FunKey S so I see it as actually less portable because the FKS you can close toss in your pocket with keys or whatever else in there and go, completely case-less.
Key chain handhelds are cool, but I have doubts about actual playablity
Yeah this is pure a novalty nothing more 😅
Yeah, I can't even use the miyoo mini for more than 30 minutes. I had to move to the miyoo mini plus.
I don’t think anyone is expecting to use this for extended gaming sessions. The Funkey S is smaller than this, and it is perfect for grinding RPG’s while waiting in line, or at the doctor’s office or something.
@@ChildOvAtom I specifically play mine on work bathroom trips

Wish they would of included a screen protector vs the keychain attachment
Should have both
the screen might be so small that it wont break easily
@@adamheeley285 breaking is the least of my problems just scratching in general
I never see the point of having a screen protector on any handheld console unless it's a touch screen you have to use. I would prefer to have a hard carrying case accessory instead.
@Jonathon Earl Most handhelds don't have a keychain. Without a protector the Nano screen would be scratched to hell.
I hope the mount feature becomes commonplace on all handhelds. Makes a lot of sense. Also the music player would be nice to switch to time to time.
I’d have liked to have seen a size comparison to the OG Miyoo Mini. Another great video 🙏
This is awesome!!! I would have loved to have this as a kid. Grew up with the old brick Gameboy
All this video did was make me NEED all three nano devices.
Thanks Russ.
My birthday is tomorrow, any ideas if RG Nano launches then? 🤣
Next week, but happy early birthday!
I'll stick to my miyoo mini. Even w my big hands its playable & PS1 works fine
"Hadoukenable and Shoryukenable" 😂😂love that!
Definitely adding this to the set of Funkey and q36(eventually)
What about battery life?
Is it wrong that I pictured Peter Serafinowicz' Mactini ad when you mentioned the music function? Probably.
Yeah! Mine just shipped!
Astonishing that you didn't do a size comparison to the Miyoo Mini. :D
Or the Powkiddy Trimui
That is so tiny and impractical…
Can’t wait for mine to get delivered
It's there any way to use a button combo to actually register L2/R2 on PS1. Because without those a lot of PS1 games are off the table. Symphony of the Night relies on 3 of the 4 shoulders for transformations which are necessary to progress through the map.
In my country, i have anbernic official and the price after launch promotion is higher than 35XX. This is one of anbernic product in the past few years that i do not buy due to it’s price.
Purchasing another one 35XX with difference color is a prefer option for me although i already 35XX
I don't care what anyone says, I think it's cool!
