I noticed that in your video covering the references in Diamond City you did not mention Fallon's Basement. Fallon's Basement is most likely based off Filene's Basement a clothing store that originally opened in 1909. It not too long ago filed bankruptcy but still remains a landmark/reference point in Boston.
Did you know The Great War of Fallout takes its name from the original name of World War One. Not just that, both wars were thought to end all wars, but as we know, War, War never changes. Please feature this British guy
A 2010 the surviving members of CIT founded the institute and with the technology on campus they constructed the relay, then built the underground base.
The Gilbert kit is safe to use under guidance. But problems were, first, kids don't follow guidance by nature, second, there were concerns about soviet angents extracting materials for assassination from the kits.
I thought Clayton Holdren was also a reference to the villain Clayton in Tarzan do to him working on the synth Gorilla project. the proof that backs this up I think is when he says the gorillas are hostile toward them.
You guys need to do an episode on Psykers when the storyteller starts up again. I mean its pretty obvious Mama Murphy is one only she somehow has a sort of reversed ability and sobriety acts as a psychic nullifier for her
Hey Shoddycast, in Fallout 4, if you happen to find an amontillado bottle, upon inspection it will say "Montressor" on the top of the label which is a clear reference to Edgar Allan Poe's famous short story, "The Cask of Amontillado" in which Montressor is the name of the antagonist.
Karal Capek coined the term robot in his 1921 play Rossum's Universal Robots. The play has many simlarityies to fallout 4 such as the question of whether or not Robots have souls and should be considered alive. the play ultimately ends with the robots rising up and destroying humanity. This mirrors the fears of the Brotherhood of steel in Fallout 4.
Yup. Granted, it was only an "attempt" at the Scottish accent, but I first fell in love with the Scottish accent from watching old Star Trek. Whether it was a great impression or not... James Doohan brought honor to the Scots with his portrayal of Montgomery Scott.
I was thinking the whole time, "Is he gonna mention Snatcher? Guess not." Snatcher was a game by MGS's Kojima for the Sega CD. The plot is practically Nick Valentine going through a post apocalyptic city trying to make sense of "bioroids" that steal people's places and look exactly like Synths. It's a fantastic inspiration for Fallout 4.
The Institute kind of reminds me of SKYNET, or at least the Synths remind me of terminators. Why? They are good at killing things, and can take the form of a human.
Hey ShoddyCast, don't you think it's sort of pointless to ask a question at the end of the video only to answer it, however many, days later? I was thinking that a good way to keep the question relevant would be to introduce a sort of commercial break, but instead of actual ads you guys could ask the question, do the comment showcase, and then answer the question in the middle of the video. I think that may be more effective, being that no one does any research, besides the occasional quick google search, to answer the question and probably forgets about it by the next video.
The term Robot was actually first used in the play R.U.R. by Karel Čapek in 1920, where his robots where closer to gen 3 synths. Assimov didn't release I, Robot until 1950. He was actually born the year R.U.R. premiered.
I side with the institute. no matter how advanced artificial intelligence becomes, it will always be artificial. that means that all robots should always have to serve us, and that as a series of ones and zeroes no machine will ever be capable of having true free will. clearly those that demonstrate signs of "free will" are defective and should either be terminated or have their memoires erased.
You missed in Asimov’s 4th book in the I Robot series, where the Bailey goes up against the Aurian Robots Institute, which literally wants to replace humans with robots to settle new worlds, even going as far to make robot children to simulate real humanity.
Mm, what'd you say? Mm, that you only meant well Well of course you did Mm, what'd you say? Mm, that it's all for the best Of course it is Mm, what'd you say? Mm, that it's just what we need You decided this Mm, what'd you say? Mm, what did she say?
Abbot in Diamond City, if a refrence to a church term for priest, giving his almost god like love of the Green Wall, and is also making a node at famous 20s laugh duo, Abbott and Costello, one of their most famous skits was the Baseball themed, "Whos on First"
Here is an idea for a video!(Clear throat). Are Gen 3 synths truly conscious beings from a Neuropsychological standpoint? A few points that ide like you to hit on include: 1. The function of the "synth component" 2. Cybernetics maybe replacing key brain nuclei 3. The fact they have neurons-based on convos in the institute When thinking about this I compared it to the real life Mycoplasma laboratorium-(The first man made bacteria).
that's interesting, I never really thought about the scientific criteria on which we would determine if a being is sentient, but this very well may become important in real world soon.
And having my own synth army is awesome and ability to teleport anywhere is the best military strategy to things in and out , and the coursers can lead synths into battle and if I get mechanicist lair to mass produce hundreds of sentribots and assultrons etc to have a 2nd army to command and have x6-88 to lead it we can definitely wage war on 2 fronts I will lead the synth army to fight against the brotherhood of steel and x6-88 army to fight against the railroad, gunners, diamond city, raiders and super mutants and blitzkrieg sweep them up and take over all together lol
There may have been a vault on spectacle island if the world hadn't ended, in the containers by the beach you can find several crates with the vault tech logo
I recently noticed that if you look out the windows in the Cambridge police station in the winter months (like late november) it clearly is snowy and icy outside, make of that what you will
The answer to your trivia question is C.) 2110. It was founded by the descendants of those that survived The Great War by taking shelter in the lower levels of the CIT building.
I dont like the new channel profile picture and the new channel back ground i prefer the older one but it would be nicei f we could get somthing thats similar to the older one
In Fallout 4 the gunner captain Wes, in the Gunner Plaza, is a possible reference to Mad Max character Wez from the road warior. Both characters sport a Mohaw, raider type gear, and war paint. I believe that this is not a coincidence.
Thank you for providing some back story and lore around The Institute. Isaac Asimov's work definitely influences much of modern culture, especially in science fiction. I, Robot took a short story and made it into a thriller where the three laws backfires. However, Bicentennial Man, the movie, shows a world where the three laws actually works. Robin Williams never attempts to destroy humanity or take over the world even once. He does disobey the third law, however, but you'll have to watch it to see how.
In fallout 3 during the missing android mission if you talk to the man who is employing you he mentions that you have no idea how strong the institute is, and how far their reach is.
I have a theory about Vault 111 and he institute. the theory is that different vaults were sponsored by different companies and vault 111 was sponsored because the institute figured out post-war plans and decided to sponsor vault 111 in case they needed a new director.
I think the Institute might also be a reference to Isaac Asimov's Foundation series as well. In the books, the Foundation are an academic group dedicated to bringing about a new and better civilization after theirs starts to crumble. The Foundation is also notable for being very secretive and accomplishing all of their goals through technology and manipulation rather than brute force.
The design of the Courser outfits are a reference to Blade Runner. The replicant character Roy wears a jacket that strongly resembles the Coursers' jackets.
The Institute should be a part of the east coast enclave division of science and tech. After the enclave base in the capital got destoryed by brotherhood, they escaped and went to the insititute to rebuild their force back
There's a little mistake. Asimov's three rules are flawless. Obey > Don't hurt humans > Protect your existence. The conflict in most Asimov stories pertaining to robots happens when the Laws are bypassed or ignored (making simpler robots, for instance) can't quite remember the zero law that spurs the events of I Robot, but that was an addendum achieved by the extrapolation of the original 3.
If you see the movie equilibrium which is about the morals of a group of people who can control everything you might notice the enforcers known as Clerics look a lot like the Coursers as well as the leader of the group that is trying to make the world "perfect" is known as Father
THERE IS A REFERENCE TO THAT CHETA BOT IN FALLOUT when you infiltrate the institute with the minutemen you find 4nim4l's holotape (possible Treizi reference?) who was testing an Assultron she found
I have a Fallout question for you. Ok so the great war was 2077 right now the year is 2016. we already know that Florida has been sinking back into the ocean now and could be gone in 1000 yrs from now. Due to nuclear war, the world has had earthquakes and mountains formed. so, my question is, IS florida most likely Underwater or Above water in the Fallout Word? if you do see this comment please reply. if you dont, i understand
@shoddyCast I know this is a bit late but, back in the 50s and 60s, glow in the dark Clocks, watches, and anything that needed brief moments in sunlight for it to work, had Nuclear Material. This Isotope was the same Material found in Smoke Detectors, Radium. A boy in America, made his own Nuclear Power Plant in his own backyard with nothing but, Smoke Detectors, and glow in the dark material which was considered harmless in small household amounts but this boy had more than anyone should have in their own home let alone in a lifetime which was why the FBI and CIA raided his home due to unusual radioactivity (which was his homemade powerplant in his Shed). Anyways, the board game could contain small trace amounts of Radium of the same material which are in a nuclear level. As you can clear see the game does not open and rarely you see a game being set up like Checkers with the caps and checkerboard. So the game would have nuclear material but tiny enough amounts for it to be considered safe. But since this is fallout we're talking about, health regulations, and standards are clearly out the window and even drinking a product could turn your urine into Zydrate(Movie Reference)- its very doubtful these companies had the consumer's safety in mind.
Gilbert, the creator of the do it yourself nuke game, claimed in his book Man who Lives in Paradise (pretentious title for a toy salesman) that the government unofficially endorsed his toys. He claimed that the government approved, off the record. Hilarious, the isotopes must have been insecure.
The "JoBuilt Phantom" semi truck in GTA V could possibly be a reference to the Tom Waits song "Big Joe and Phantom 309". The song involves a ghost truck driver giving a hitchhiker a lift, seems appropriate to name the truck that then even if it's extremely obscure. Thanks a lot for choosing my comment, if you do that is...
Do not think of the film as a good reference on the effectiveness of the Three Laws. The whole point of the Robot Books was that the laws are solid, the computer can't think around them, and they are always following them to the best of their ability.
Similarly, while the book does end with robots taking over, it's not an overtly bad thing, it's done completely peacefully, and is pointed out to have a similar level of competence to human government, without any of the corruption.
+rngwrldngnr in fairness, Asimov later had booms suggesting that the robots in charge were stagnating human development, though this may have just been so he could tie the books into the robot-less Foundation series.
Blade Runner is also a heavy influence here, in the movie the Tyrell Corporation manufactures human-like robots called Replicants. This obviously sounds like the Institute and it's synths. Also, it can be seen as inspiration for the Institute Coursers as well. The Blade Runners in the movie are basically agents who hunt down Replicants, like how the Coursers hunt down rogue synths.
lmao. I love how MIT like how Bethesda put them in their game , but do not remember that 3 out of 4 endings let you blow it up and that most of the commonwealth hate them
The Institute is a great example of how the greatest harm is caused by the best of intentions. Also how inaction breeds doubt and fear. All that technology and they did nothing to help those on the surface.
The Institute really is the best hope for the wasteland. They make synths to rebuild the Old World infrastructure like sewers/ waterworks/ subways/ rebuilding building... Etc. Etc. Researching Bio science to eventually terraform the surface wastelands into beautiful, thriving, fertile farmland. And also its intelligent people to help continue to progress mankind.. So theres no Good or Bad guy in Fallout 4. Its all grey.
+CJ Ware its all a matter of opinion i for one can't follw the Institute on moral grounds. will it take longer to rebuild under the Minutemen yeah but there wont be scientists with no moral compass treating the Commonwealth as a test tube
Bradknightable But since you take over as Director, you could potentiality lead them in a friendlier, more caring and loving direction.. Under my control, we are going through the wastes.. making sure everyone has clean water.. Food and shelter.. We are forming a sorts of government.. Marking are comings and goings with our flag.. You can join us.. Or suffer the consequences.. But under our direction you will be safe and feed.... Hah
b or c their mission statement is: "Mankind, Redefined." It would be around the point that synths were developed that their very foundation and purpose would have been geared towards what we now recognize as The Institute. otherwise CIT would have been made around the time all of the states were restructured and merged into the 13 providences. Massachusetts was no more and MIT would be called CIT after the area it resides in. i cant recall when this restructuring of the entire nation was done in the fallout universe.
Actually Blast Radius is just to fit the theme reber EVERYTHING in the Follout verse is nuclear, Cars, power generators, pip boys, so of couse the board games would be nuclear
2110 sticks out to me. I know it was post war because pre-war it was still CIT and the institute was founded by CIT graduates if I'm not mistaken which would mean it would have to have been not too long after the war. So yeah, 2110 makes the most sense to me.
But how could the institute, that was supposed to be founded BEFORE the Great War, be founded after? Perhaps he meant when was the Institute FACTION founded....that might make sense....
I'm somewhat surprised. I would've thought to mention Asimov's Foundation series as both the Institute and Foundation were established to develop technology and preserve society as society collapsed. If anything, the Institute more closely resembles the Second Foundation, a secretive and manipulative organization which didn't share the research and technology they developed.
Not sure if this has already been discovered but fallout eye bots REALLY resembles Sputnik 1 from the space race era. It makes sense also since that's when the fallout era is!
Know why I joined the brotherhood of steel? Fucking reapers man. Synths are geth and geth worship the reapers. #NeverForgetShepard

Hey Shoddycast, in Fallout 4, if you happen to find an amontillado bottle, upon inspection it will say "Montressor" on the top of the label which is a clear reference to Edgar Allan Poe's famous short story, "The Cask of Amontillado" in which Montressor is the name of the antagonist.

actually its in Cambridge, Ma.

Here is an idea for a video!(Clear throat). Are Gen 3 synths truly conscious beings from a Neuropsychological standpoint?

that's a brilliant idea.

It's not his accent it's just his flow, the more he reads he should get betyer

I don't hate is, just sometimes it's hard to understand, and he seems to talk a bit slower than the other person
The institute was founded in 2110 (c). It´s in the logo of the institute, and you can see them in the water and food packages.
Yup voice still detracts from my enjoyment of the video.
What about skynet? The institute is basically skynet, the synths look like terminators, and the coarsers look menacing
Oh bloody hell, mate. This guy's voice is bad to the point I couldn't understand some of the things that he mumbled off.

A : 2077 or are we talking about when the remenatns of MIT named themselvfes the Instetute? Cause then its (B)
I, Robot was an amalgamation of all of Asimov's books on that subject, which was actually titled 'Robots and Empires'.
I'm about 95% positive that the cyborg you help get facial reconstruction surgery and a memory wipe in fallout 3 at rivet city is an escaped synth.
It is that is literally the entire point of the quest
+Oliver Clothesoff
The Coursers are also like Terminators.
+pepper Mill Yeah
lmao. I love how MIT like how Bethesda put them in their game , but do not remember that 3 out of 4 endings let you blow it up and that most of the commonwealth hate them
0:28 I think I just had an eargasm.
Hah
The Gilbert company also made a glassblowing set that gets like 1000 degrees Fahrenheit or something up there.
b or c their mission statement is: "Mankind, Redefined." It would be around the point that synths were developed that their very foundation and purpose would have been geared towards what we now recognize as The Institute. otherwise CIT would have been made around the time all of the states were restructured and merged into the 13 providences. Massachusetts was no more and MIT would be called CIT after the area it resides in. i cant recall when this restructuring of the entire nation was done in the fallout universe.
The answer is C, 2110. The survivors from C.I.T founded it to further the work of the original members of the school.
Actually Blast Radius is just to fit the theme reber EVERYTHING in the Follout verse is nuclear, Cars, power generators, pip boys, so of couse the board games would be nuclear
+Lexx Alolia what did you even just say
Blast Radius seems more like the Nuke Em board game from the original Robocop imo.
2110 sticks out to me. I know it was post war because pre-war it was still CIT and the institute was founded by CIT graduates if I'm not mistaken which would mean it would have to have been not too long after the war. So yeah, 2110 makes the most sense to me.
I found the solution to problem that many people have with this video, mute the sound and enable the subtitles. XD
In the song Baby Got Back Mixalot say the words "rumple smoothskin". therefore Mixalot is a goul
i'd say 2110. D was the release of the original Fallout, A was the Great War, and B was the year FO1 took place
But how could the institute, that was supposed to be founded BEFORE the Great War, be founded after? Perhaps he meant when was the Institute FACTION founded....that might make sense....
I can actually see why the BOS hates synths, they're are essentially robots that are self-aware and break the laws of robotics.
+Piginn0cent pssssssssssh what do you mean by that? wastelanders aren't people
if thats what you mean
I knew I wasn't the only one to notice that little fact about blast radius
I'm somewhat surprised. I would've thought to mention Asimov's Foundation series as both the Institute and Foundation were established to develop technology and preserve society as society collapsed. If anything, the Institute more closely resembles the Second Foundation, a secretive and manipulative organization which didn't share the research and technology they developed.
Plot Twist : "Father" isn't ur son(he's a synth) , the child "synth" version of Shaun is actually him
that would be pretty interesting if it wasn't for you not getting a child synth if you side with the institute
+Scott Sterling you do get one , Father makes a child version of him self which is a synth
+Nathan Grocki even when you side with the institute? if so, I never got one :'(
The most obvious Asimov reference is the name of his triology The Institute.
was about to comment this.
What if when you launch a fat man at the ground, you create a fallout world for germs? Food for thought
Gilbert also made a glass blowing set for ages 11+
I'm wasting my last 3% of battery life on this
you are a lucky bastard
Not sure if this has already been discovered but fallout eye bots REALLY resembles Sputnik 1 from the space race era. It makes sense also since that's when the fallout era is!
Noo really
I'm not going to watch all the videos to see if they've already covered it
Everybody that's ever seen a picture of Sputnik knows that. Nobody ever thought it was that interesting though
In vault 75 the simulation of uptown land, has the exact same look as the persevered city in the museum of the movie demolition man.
2110, i think because you see kellog talking to an institute representitive, and kellog is a very...very... old man
I joined the Institute for 3 reasons.
1) Coursers are Badass
2) Teleporting is Badass
3) I Got Bored of the Other Factions
Going to guess 2077 I here'd Its something to do with time line of fallout 4 and just a guess
when your in the middle of exams but shoddycast is life
