The Clovers had several hits in the 50's and were the original artist to record "Love Potion No. 9" that The Searchers had as a hit in the 60's. I think that The Quiet Man may be the movie that I have watched the most. I do have a lot of TV DVD's and in fact picked up a couple from the thrift store today in Murder She Wrote (love seeing the guest stars) and Newhart. Thanks for watching.

Another great episode Randy. Thanks for the shout-out. Appreciate that. Look forward to continuing our countdown next week with Brian and Doc. My favorite five movies of 1952 (in no particular order...don't want to give my order away till we record our series).
Singin' in the Rain, High Noon, The Quiet Man, The Narrow Margin (underrated classic), and The Greatest Show on Earth (which gets unfairly maligned, in my opinion). I'm a big fan of the George Reeves Superman series as well. I can still visualize those faces of Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen. Great stuff. Talk to you soon.

Thanks Rich. I haven't seen The Greatest Show On Earth for a while, will need to rewatch it. I just rewatched Kiss Me Deadly and it certainly was a different kind of noir. I hope that I'm not giving too many movies away with this series, but it will mainly be my fifties picks. I wasn't really a comic book collector but I did enjoy watching The Adventures of Superman as a child.

Good Evening Randy - another enjoyable program. With regard to the films of this year my top favourites would be: At No 1 - Fred Zinnemann's "High Noon", with Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly. One of my top Western's from this decade. At No 2 - It's Joan Crawford, Jack Palance & Gloria Grahame in the classic thriller, "Sudden Fear". At No 3 - I have "The Narrow Margin", with Charles McGraw. Being a fan of Gene Hackman, I also enjoy the 1990 remake that does have some exciting action sequences. Also being a fan of James Mason, the film "5 Fingers" is very good and worthy of watching. Based on a true story, set during World War II, it uses a lot of real-life locations that add to its authenticity. The film has a very satisfying ending, in its own way. Two other films I will mention here are the next Ealing Comedy, "The Man In The White Suit', also starring Alec Guinness" and Fritz Lang's "Clash By Night", with Barbara Stanwyck & Robert Ryan. I am not a fan of musicals but do recognize the importance and success of "Singing In The Rain", that also came out this year. Looking forward to 1953. Have a great night.

I do enjoy the film "High Noon" and can't believe that I don't have it in the collection. I'm not sure whether I have "Sudden Fear" as well and I don't know if I have ever seen the film. I do own three Joan Crawford box sets and it is not in them. I will have to check my film noir collection. I'm glad that you are a fan of "The Narrow Margin" and "5 Fingers." Gene Hackman is one of my favorite actors and I did like the remake but prefer the 1952 version. I did mention the Ealing comedy "The Man In The White Suit" in my last video because I though it came out in 1951. Alec Guinness is great in those movies. "Clash By Night" was under consideration as I like Fritz Lang as a director and Robert Ryan is always good, no matter the role. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I am really impressed by the fact that you have all those records, movies and TV shows. A little tidbit... My stepmother was smacked on the rear by John Wayne on an LA beach when she was like 20. He called her "Blondie". My stepmother wasn't thrilled.

That is an interesting story. I guess John Wayne was too used to doing similar things in the movies, but needed to learn that they are not popular in the real world. The collection does seem to keep growing, but as long as I have the space, I don't worry.

You've made another case for there being great music in the 1950s. The decade has been wrongly judged by its easy listening records. "(How Much Much) Is That Doggie in the Window?" doesn't define the decade.
"I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive" is a fun song. I've listened to the Jimmie Dale Gilmore cover more than the original, so that's what I hear in my head when I think of it. --- I'm excited about the Jimmie Dale Gilmore/Dave Alvin tour making its return to Dallas in a little over a month. To my city's embarrassment, it wasn't hard to get tickets.
I haven't seen 5 Fingers or The Narrow Margin. It will be time to change that. Congratulations to The Quiet Man.
    Looking forward to 1953.

@@RandyforRoyals I hadn't seen Dave Alvin in concert until he teamed up with Jimmie Dale. The pre-COVID tour was a lot of fun, but Dave really put on a show on the second leg of the tour, after being kept at home by the pandemic and whatever health issues he'd been fighting. He let everything that had been bottled up out and blistered our ears. It was a beautiful night. --- I see their tour is heading to Knuckleheads in September. Do you see shows there? I'd been curious about the place since they book a lot of the same acts that play at my favorite small/mid-sized venues. (Also, I once heard Norm Macdonald hint in an interview that Billy Joe Shaver didn't have much love for the place.) I hadn't realized that Knuckleheads had multiple stages. The outdoor stage doesn't look fun for the hot weather months. The booker for the place sure seems to know his stuff, though. Hats off to the guy for bringing in Little Anthony and the Imperials and Burton Cummings the same week as Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Dave Alvin.

@@RandyforRoyals It was a great show.
Dale is playing the Longhorn Ballroom here the night before Jimmie Dale and Dave come to town to play the Longhorn's sister theater. I feel like a little kid waiting for Christmas.
I'm not familiar with the Cactus Blossoms, but I did catch two great Nick Lowe shows in recent years. He opened for Mavis Staples on the first show and then came out at the end of the night to join in with everyone singing "The Weight." The second show was with Los Straightjackets. I have a foggy memory of you saying that you saw one of those shows. That tour was a blast.
I am thankful that the music that I like to hear live usually gets played at venues that aren't linked to Ticketmaster. It's also been great to see that there's a growing network of venues throughout the country that make it possible for independent musicians to earn a living.

1952 is not a year that has a lot of huge personal favorites for me, but my top five films would be, “High Noon”, “The Snows Of Kilimanjaro”, “Singin’ In The Rain”, The latter day Chaplin film, “Limelight”, and “On Dangerous Ground”, (mainly because it has Ida Lupino in it).
For top five songs, I agree with you on The Clovers “One Mint Julep”, Kitty Wells “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels”, Jo Stafford “You Belong To Me”, Hank Williams “Lost Highway”, and The Louvin Brothers “The Great Atomic Power”.

I have heard that Gene Kelly was sick with a fever for the filming of that famous scene. I remember Fantastic Voyage being on TV in the 70's and I might have seen bits of the George Reeves Superman episodes at some point. Television was interesting when I was a kid, the schedule seemed quite loose and I would come across old shows like the b&w Little Rascals shorts, British programs and even some of the old movie serials like Flash Gordon seemingly randomly filling up empty slots. Cheers!

Wow, that Clovers album cover is awesome. I had a compilation tape with a version of One Mint Julep on it, but I can't remember who was singing it. Might have been the Clovers. Merle Travis - don't know him at all, but now I want to hear some. I did see From Here To Eternity. I have that Jimmy Stewart DVD 4-pack (or 2-pack, depending on how you look at it.) It seems like his westerns don't get as much attention as some of his other movies but I thought all 4 of the films in that compilation were great. Merle Travis often had a lot of humor in his folksy/country songs. The Clovers also had the first hit with "Love Potion No. 9" that The Searchers later covered and had a hit of their own. Sometimes Jimmy Stewart's westerns are overlooked, especially the great ones directed by Anthony Mann. It's great that you have that four pack. Mr. Hobbs Takes A Vacation is hilarious and a great pick. If you are a film noir fan, I highly recommend The Narrow Margin. Thanks for watching.
