- When HIROSHIMA MON AMOUR, directed by Alain Resnais and written by Marguerite Duras, was released in 1959, it sent shock waves through the film world. It was clear, even from its first frames, that this modernist masterpiece was inventing a new kind of cinematic language. Below, watch the initial four and a half minutes of the film, a beautiful reverie on post-World War II life.
Alain Resnais’s HIROSHIMA MON AMOUR is now available in Blu-ray and DVD special editions from the Criterion Collection.
The greatest opening scene ever. If a film can make you cry within ten seconds of starting it's probably one of the greatest films of all time.
My favourite opening sequence ever. Always gives me the goosebumps, especially when he repeats the line "Tu n'as rien vu à Hiroshima".
Why ?
This opening sequence and the whole movies , especially its dialogues were quite like in a poem.
Yes! True. The dialogue is a very flow poem, that mix many differents elements as like the Image (visual). This starting is a really masterpiece
@@trannamanh7246 of course knowing that Duras wrote the dialogues for the movie
There's so much emotion in the opening shots. It overwhelms me every time I see it.
In this all too brief opening sequence to Alain Resnais’s “Hiroshima Mon Amor” I am reminded of this film’s stark beauty; the precious gift that international cinema from its golden age was, and how far filmmaking has fallen in depth, perception and import over the past forty years.
This is the greatest opening of all time. The philosophical reflections are so well communicated just within the first two minutes. It's the purest and most honest art I've ever witnessed.
I remember the first time I watched this movie I had the volume all the way down on my TV by accident. The first couple shots of their bodies covered in ash played in complete silence. It took my breath away like few films ever have.
Love the soundtrack to this film. So good!
jayricofilms Possibly the best.
Simply an amazing, moving, poetic and unique experience, love every second and every beautiful frame of this film, definetely my favorite film ever!
I saw this for the very first time right now and am just astounded at its brilliance.
Yes I know the feeling
+Ivan Penchev The whole film or just this scene?
You're destroying me. You're good for me.
One of the best scenes I’ve ever watched.
Truly one of the masterpieces, I`m impressed! I so wanna see this movie.
+uchihadante77 Definitely check it out if you haven't yet. It's a great film. I had the privilege of watching it on the big screen a couple of months ago and was thoroughly impressed.
One of the great masterpieces of world cinema
Alyway come back to this! The film forces one directly into this affected strange mood. An attempt to make the unspeakable sayable.
It's like a painting
And your name is Nevers, Nevers in France.
Watched it last night for the first time wow what a beauty
I saw it in 1980 and consider it as one of the greatest ...
If film can be a profound life experience then that’s what this film is.
This movie always blows my mind
Cinematography is awesome
When geniuses harmonize... Resnais, Duras and Fusco...
What an amazing use of space
WHAT A MASTERPIECE.
Translation error: the phrase "l'herbe, c'est bien simple..." does not translate as "the grass. It's quite simple", which makes no sense. It should read: "All of the grass, I'm telling you, it...", implying everything has been burned down (and she's cut off in what she's saying).
merci gabi, la langue de Shakespeare a besoin de héros tels que toi !
Alain Resnais, like all great directors, knew the importance of music in films, he knew the value and skill of *Giovanni Fusco* and how much their mutual collaboration created the magic of the film, unfortunately very often those who talk about cinema do not have this awareness, so much so that for example below this video Giovanni Fusco is not even mentioned.
Hiroshima mon Amour
Never more ...................!
What to watch after “Oppenheimer.”

Nice gimbal work 😍
I love the song from the opening, but I can't find the soundtrack anywhere!!! So frustrating.
I want to buy it.
I don't want to simply listen to all of them at once on a single RUclips video.
Anyone have any idea where I can buy it???? h e l p
same with me, i'm just trying to find one piece of music I heard on Democracy Now but sadly all I can find is the single youtube video with all the songs which is better then nothing.
Nothing to lose
I can't watch this sequence, I just can't. But I am here to read the comments.
The premise didn't sound interesting but WOW at the cinematography! Stunning.
+Messofanego Definitely check it out if you haven't yet. It's a great film and gets more interesting as it goes on.
MrPinbert
I saw it right after and thought it was brilliant! Bought it and also Last Year In Marienbad.
sasha vierny at his best...
Kubrick style before Kubrick;)
Actually, this film is from 1959, by that time Kubrick had already made four films and two shorts. So not really "before Kubrick" but a great film nonetheless.
This short sequence definitely "brings home the bacon" when you want to see what might come of our NUCLEAR AGE. And y'all are worried about COVID-19. Where's my PABST BLUE RIBBON?
✨✨✨
