- In this video I show you how to make curved legs from straight pieces of wood with no waste. When I first saw this technique years ago I was mind-blown! I'm a traditional woodworker, but I use band saws in this video since the concept is more important than the tools used. Enjoy and thanks for watching!
#woodworkingtips #bandsawtricks #curvedtablelegs
I teach bench joinery and I'm going to use this to confuse the hell out of my students tomorrow.
Yeah, how did that go?
LOL :-P
Have a look at Grandpa amu on RUclips. He uses hand tools only. His diamond shaped puzzle is incredible and he makes a stool and a table without nails or glue from one piece of timber.
Ohh, wat fun! You rascal! But yeah, teachable moments a-plenty. 😁
@jay s you should let us know what happened in class xD
Too cool. One half of my brain is saying "Well of course that works," the other half is saying "WHAAAT?"
Have you tried rotating both halves of your brain by 180º?
Have a look at Grandpa amu on RUclips. He makes everything with hand tools. Look at the diamond shaped puzzle he makes. It's mental. 👍
Well said, JK.
same :D
Apparently, I only have half of a brain.
I thought he was going to soak it and then manipulate the wood😂😂😂
me too..
Same, but the thumbnail explicitly said "no bending" so i was intrigued
Lol, me too.
@@silphone Oh, I missed that text. I was expecting some boiled and bent wood.
@@silphone Haha!, me too, so I came to watch!
This is so elegant. I thought at first "oh steam let's go" but this just blew my mind.
...me too!!!!
Exactly what I thought, exactly my state at the middle of the video ^^
Ha same
Okay, mind blown. This was like watching how to perform a magic trick, without actually spoiling the trick because even the reveal looks like magic.
Even seeing the trick, it's still magical!
Your comment reminded me of my favorite magic trick “penne and tellers blast off”
i guess im asking randomly but does anybody know of a tool to get back into an Instagram account?
I stupidly forgot the password. I love any tips you can give me
@Keaton Byron instablaster ;)
@Jagger Carson I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
Takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
This is exactly the type of stuff youtube recommends me and I subsequently watch at 3:30 am.
checks clock.... 3:56am... sounds about right
Years later 3:50am still holding strong 😅
I had no idea where this was heading. I don't know why I didn't see it coming, that makes so much sense, but I would have never thought of it myself. Thank you for sharing this!
My pleasure, thank you for watching!!
Watching the first minute:
Hold up that's going to be heaps of waste
Later:
OOOOOH DAMN.
Nah, just the saw dust.
Absolutely I’ve been a Woodworker 62 years and I’ve never seen anything quite like that
Glad I could share something new to you! Thanks for watching!
thats a bit sad
Am also
@@TheTravismiller77 No, it is actually amazing.
The lesson to be learned is, no matter how much you know...there is always room to grow.
Be safe and be *real*
Have a look at Grandpa amu on RUclips. He's incredible.
This is really cool. I want to try this and I’m not even making a table.
Make a kwikfish or flat fish instead!
This is kind blowing.. Never imagined this could be done...
Initially I started with some skepticism.. Thinking of steam and some heavy hydrolics... 👍
... and it's relatively trivial to do in Sketchup or similar 3D, so you can see what the outcome will be and adjust. Not re-doing ALSO saves wood...
Mind blowing *
Mee too
Agree that it Amazing!
I’m not a wood worker and don’t plan on working with wood but this showed up in my feed and this looks sick
This has less than a thousand views!? You've totally blown my mind, this is one of the most amazing techniques I've ever seen. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Thank you very much! Glad I could show you something new!
10000% agree with this, he's getting up there tho, 62k at this point. Deserves so many more tho. Genius.
@Michael Smoljanovic ... Agreed...
@@dragunov525 and 4 days later 640k :D glad this is getting attention, it's so cool I'm gonna try just for the sake of trying
Very interesting to see how videos can go 'viral' - no traction for months and then..... near 1 million today! And rightfully so.
As a mathematician and engineer, the first time i saw this in one of my abstract geometry classes, i actually was so mind blown that i yelled "F you" at my professor. Granted, i usually dont use that kind of language, so you can see how mind blown i was.
Hahahahha!
😂
Thank you for sharing this. IT IS REALLY MIND BLOWING!!!!
I gotta admit, this was really, really cool!
Thanks very much! Appreciate it!
@@TenonsTenors
at first I was like no way, impossib.... son of a bitch he did it.
beautiful work, I'm just getting started in wood.
This is a similar concept as wood stretching.
Brilliant.
I’ve been a carpenter and joiner for 20 years and never seen it even thought about this method.
Every days a school day!
Well done! Now I have to go give this a go myself.
The genius of the human mind . . . . . . . whoever came up with such an idea!
I thought the same thing while watching it. Amazing.
Have a look at Grandpa amu on RUclips. He's incredible.
Probably a computer figured this one out.
Pixelated
The human mind is far more capable than a computer. Moves much faster! 🤔 If we only knew.
I can see how though. It's like how I learned to make tessellations by modifying a regular polygon on paper, but just applied to woodworking with one more dimension.
11/26/2020 USA Grandpa Bill: Man, this is so clear and concise you could be a trainer in any shop or school. Your voice is well-modulated; your camera work is perfect; your planned stages are logical; the whole presentation appears without error. Thank you for being on RUclips, sharing your insights, and encouraging so many of us to try, to make, to build. You're a real treasure, but I think you are a humble man and will shrug off such weighty praise. Just know many of us admire your work and you, even if we can't say it.
Thank you very much! That was a truly humbling comment. Thank you for your feedback, and thank you for taking the time to write it!
I totally AGREE!!
T&T has amazing, clear, and well presented content.
How cool is this?! :)
Looking at the comments timestamps, it looks like the algorithm was just recently very kind to you. I'm glad that happened and this is pretty cool!
So where does one apply to the black magic woodworking school.
That might be the best woodworking trick I've ever seen, I've made so many cabriole legs and there's usually so much waste, I'm seriously impressed.
I wonder how the first person to do this figured it out? My head still hurts thinking how this works. Wonderful job
Maybe it was by accident or maybe it was someone with good geometric association and thinking. I know some people of the latter kind and they are pretty good thinking about positions, turning and fitting stuff, etc.
What kinda wood working magic did I just watch.... “mind blown” ... thank you for putting this out , truly original stuff.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
35 years and I'm still learning. Best woodworking magic trick ever!... Thank you!
Still waiting for the bit where he cuts bits off and glues them back to a different part of the original bit as i'm still sure what i saw is impossible 🤯
I saw the thumbnail and went "What? No! Impossible." but 30 seconds in, I realized how this is done and I felt like a fool for never thinking of how simple and genius this is.
i first thought, well there's a saw so how is there no waste..... was not disappointed.
Who are these over 500 crazy people who dislike this video😱 this is pure magic✨
Over 500 real furniture designers.
@@awjaaa 😂😂😂
If you study the brains of these people, you will discover why humanity hasn't evolved beyond suffering

This just shattered my mind. I’m typing this from the asylum!
Thanks!
Ha ha I broke the 69 likes!
Beautiful ingenuity
I was surprised that when you said "no waste" you LITERALLY meant "no waste" not like "no more waste than usual"
It was just ....Wow....you opened up my mind to next level👍
Fantastic! Glad I could help!
I’m just in the process of starting to learn about woodwork and I got RIDICULOUSLY EXCITED seeing this happen 😲Also thank you for explaining so clearly
A structural advantage of this method is that it is guaranteed to form a continuous solid core running top to bottom of the finished leg (well, providing you don't go crazy with the rasp). The size of the core will depend on how close to the edges you allow the wavy cuts to go.
Four solid cores
Where was RUclips when I was a kid? I wish I had learned something this cool when I was younger!
Where was the internet? Growing up with rotary-phones, a key-pad was 'modern'. And we ran businesses with a.... fax. The web would have changed my life, back then...
Damn, now I have to buy a band saw... !
This made my list of "top 100 youtube videos you should watch before you die" list 😂😂. Seriously, I'm a novice woodworker and I've been intrigued and fascinated about bending, twisting and turning wood to give it interesting shapes specially for legs. However most of the methods are a little complicated, this one totally made me think again about it. I don't have a bandsaw but this now has made me putting it on my wishlist of tools. Thanks a lot for this well explained and highly educational video. And thanks too to the RUclips Algorithm God for putting this on my feed today 😁.
Thanks very much for watching and commenting! The technique can be done with a turning saw (like a big fret saw) but it will take more time, and requires a little more skill because you need to keep the cut in the same place on both sides of the wood, but it's possible. Thanks for watching!
@@TenonsTenors thanks for all your help and for encouraging others to make beautiful things. Wish you a merry Christmas.
@@jellyg.8961 Thank you! The same to you!
I am going to try making my first table with a mix of a few techniques (I'm a carpentry/cabinetry student attempting to build my own drawing table), and I love the idea that I can add some flair, creativity, and style to my table. Thank you show much for showing us all this technique!
That's fabulous! I hope you impress your instructor!! Good luck!
EXCELLENT...
VERY NICE...
AMAZING....
this is GOD SKILL..
LIKE A MAGIC IN THIS REAL LIFE..
BRAAAVVVOOOOOOO......!!!!
let me be you're student...!!!!!
Wow, this was genius. This is an absolutely amazing technique. Simple. Thanks for this tip.
My pleasure! I learned it years ago, just trying to pass it forward! Thanks for watching!
bu ahşah işçiliğinden çok..geometri..büyüleyici bir çalışma..
I'm not a woodworker but that was genius!

It doesn't matter what field, I like seeing ingenuity like this.
Wow! When you said "no waste" You meant NO WASTE. Amazing!
@@aaroncoleman3053 Also some food energy was turned into heat.
A similar “magic” result is obtained with involuted wood turning. First time I saw it demonstrated was a a club meet. I rushed home to try it out. One could spend a lot of time seeing where it took you!
Fun way to make wizzard wands
Mind blowing technique, lots of regards for the skill and craft
I thought "no waste" was just hyperbole. I did a double take.
Same here.
You could hear my jaw dropping! This is truly stunning. Have you recieved any death threats from people you learned this from as I bet this one of those things people dont share. Very much appreciated!!
Hahaha! Not yet, thank goodness!
This has to be one of the most remarkable woodworking videos I've ever seen. Thumbs up for you, sir.
not looking for this, but glad to have seen
I clicked just to bust the claim of no waste. Yet it left me completely blown away. Thanks for sharing!
Ha! Glad I didn't disappoint you!
AMAZING !!
Many thanks
PS also a brilliant “how to” for instructional videos !
This is so mind-blowing, it's like the thing where people are cutting away a part of a chocolate bar and they still have the same size 🤯
This!! There must be a name for stuff like these 😵 It's too awesome not to have a name!!
I really thought this was clickbait. So wrong - amazing! Well done, cannot understand how this could get a dislike.
Thanks! Personally, I was wondering what some people don't like either!!
Dislike are sick minds.
There is envious people all over!
it is difficult to imagine that someone invented it, it must've been discovered by accident.
Think of their faces , first time someone , could be a toddler or a parrot , made this puzzle from leftover wood
Really cool & excellent video! But I will say I'm not a fan of Titebound I. I absolutely love Titebound III & I like Titebound II. Wood glue is about preference and application. I just like using Titebound III! Awesome 👍🏾
Yep. Eye popping, mind blowing magnificence. You sir earned a like and subscribe from me.
Thank you very much!
Me: *sees title and thinks "bullcrap, hes gotta cut out those grooves or bend it somewhere. Surely there'll be some waste."
Me again: *watches video and now thinks, "holy crap, thats cool. And the only "waste" would be where the cuts and sanding things smooth would be. Hhmmmmm......what could i make to use this technique? Crap, cant do it anyway. I dont have the tools. Hhmmmm.......hey honey, i think i need to go to lowes and get a few things! Oh, not much, just a few new tools. We can call it a birthday present! Love you!" 😁
I have my jaw on the floor. Thanks for teaching us!!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
I only realised what was coming on the second bandsaw cut but this is extremely clever and beautifully done. I would never have thought of it in a hundred years so thanks for showing me something really ingenious 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Just wondering what could be the IQ of this legend person.
Excellent technique and video..thank you...i dont even do woodwork but i was enthralled
Clever technique and great explanation! Thanks a lot for sharing it, very valuable indeed!

I'm in IT and while I enjoy my chosen profession, I am in awe of what these wood craftsmen (and women) can do. This video is amazing. It's like watching the behind the scenes of a David Coperfield magic trick!

Is there a name fore this technique? I tried to research other examples and have had no luck.... still totally gobsmacked. Love it!
Some people commenting have referred to it as "inside turning," but I've always called it the "WTF technique"
Get outta here! What is this scorcery? My eyes have been tricked, surely!
That by far is the best way I've ever seen to make a leg like that.
Anyone else think he sounds like AL from "Tim the Tool Man".
Have we really progressed all these years?

Nice my dude, nice.
Realmente é difícil conceber o final. É de dar nó na mente. Apesar de ser muito simples. Obrigado.
I was a props master for many years (film, theatre, events etc ,etc). I had many people applying to work on projects; I would give them 2 first tasks to evaluate skills.
Handing them a finished 'wiggle' piece - as above - telling them "there is no waste"
and asking if they could work out the technique. Then getting them to carve a ball
in polystyrene foam, fast.
It really sorted out the wheat from the chaff, not unkindly I hope.
I use the terrific 'trick' for sculptural pieces now.
Yes yes, great technique. How bout that audio tho. Triping me out
Holy mind blown is right ! Great vid :-)
I've been staring at the legs on my pool table for ages. So complex! Now I see how it was done. SLACKERS!

I doubt it will be as strong and as long lasting as bent wood though. please warn me if I am to sit on that chair...
