46 years ago, Rohidas Desai took over an existing taverna off Eduarte Pacheco street in Panjim to set up his seafood restaurant. Fastidious about the quality of seafood, he would visit the market each day to scour for the best marine produce to be cooked to his wife, Gokula Desai’s recipes. It is no surprise then that this committed approach had earned for Ritz legions of ardent patrons who now pack the group's six restaurants for lunch and dinner. I caught up with Daad (as he is known to everyone in Goa) Desai in a meeting that was ordained by destiny over a seafood lunch at their very first eatery, Café Ritz. Hope you enjoy this episode; take care, stay safe and strong. Happy eating!
Seafood Thali
Rs 200 (usd 2.6) The thali is priced at Rs. 300 (usd 3.9) in the other Ritz Classic restaurants, however the quantity and variety on the thaali too may be a bit more.

Sir Marathi! I wish you've also covered Kokani Kanteen .

KHOOP CHAAN MARATHI BOLTA. I THOUGHT KRIPAL WAS A COORGI FROM BANGALORE, FROM HIS LAST NAME. BUT HE SPEAKS AWESOME MARATHI. SURPRISING! ENGLISH, KANADI, MARATHI TEENHI SUDDHA APRATEEM. BEING MUMBAIKAR MAHARASHTRIAN LIVING IN THE U.S. FOR 30 YEARS, BOLAYCHI SAWAI GAYLEE TARI PANH EVEN I CANNOT SPEAK SUCH GOOD MARATHI, IMPROMPTU, THAT IS. GOVYALA ME LAHAAN ASTHANA 1968 MADHAY GELO HOTO. THERE WAS NO BRIDGE SO WE HAD TO CROSS THE RIVER IN OUR AMBASSADOR ON THE FERRY. WE HAD FAMILY FRIENDS THERE WE STAYED WITH B'COZ MY GRANDPA WAS AN MLA IN BOMBAY- LIKE THE DEMPOS, REBIEROS, D'MELLOS. ALMOST 55 YEARS NOW. FIRST TIME IN OUR LIFE WE HAD MUTTON AND PORK COOKED IN FERMENTED TODDY. THE OTHER TIME I HAD MUTTON CURRY COOKED IN TODDY WAS IN RURAL TELANGANA- NIZAMABAD AD WARANGAL.

We are saraswats who travel to Goa every 3 months and we never miss out on Ritz classic, kokani canteen, Goan room , spice goa and kokam curry( candolim) all serve authentic Goan konkani cuisine ❤️
nice, Just want to ask that in goa according to local culture and tradition does people eat with hands or by spoon/fork ?
Watching Kripal speak Marathi is a real treat. Nailed it.
Mr. Amanna, after watching your review I went down there all the way from north goa to have a family lunch. I have to say, the place is NOT at all condusive for family eating. I really had a hard time to arrange a seat as staffs were not at all cooperative to find a place for family. Waiting outside for 1 hr!!. Food can be bad but experience can not.
He is a mumbiate.
@@debchakrabarty1500 chal bhag bangali
@@debchakrabarty1500 no one forced u to wait, people wait there because of the quality and taste of food they offer.
Bro it is Konkani
Seeing Daas uncle on this video reminded me of my dad. So proud of Daas Uncle calling him as my second dad. Been our family friend since forever now!
My dad and he were best friends for 47 years, until my dad passed away last month. I saw my dad in Daad in this video.
Awesome. I had my first thali there 32 yrs back n still love it. Best part when u all came to shoot this episode I was there for my favourite thali.its really a epic place we can forget.👍❤️
How nice to know you were there on the day we shot this episode, Basil.
I visited this restaurant in 2005 along with my parents..When I asked the waiter about the menu, he brought a thali full of fresh fish...He said sir you choose the fish and we will prepare..It was a first time experience for me..This place is an absolute legend ..
I just love it...when you speak Marathi! 🙂it elaborates the taste of the food! :)
I first ate there in 1996. Amazing seafood thali….the lunch thali is so popular in Pangjim, you have to wait an hour before you get a seat…seafood thali used to cost Rs180….a steal in my book 👌👌👌✌🏾
2:46 Baby matlab wife. Uncle rocked Kripal shocked !!!
I was also pleasantly shocked 😀
You are multiple languages master , who can enjoy the food with sweet demo. Thanks. You are India.
Goa is blessed with the tastiest seafood ❤️ Proud to be a Goan 😊 🥰 Desai bhau doesn't look like he's 82 😀
Dear Kripal sir, you taste everything irrespective of your own tastebuds. You find history behind every food. You communicate in local language. You respect every culture that you have been. You truely enjoy being food lover. You are are a true inspiration for every foody!
Lots of love. . .
I like the vigour and zest of daad when he is discussing food. Especially seafood. The cuisine seems of typical goan standards, veering closer to saraswat cuisine.
I may have eaten here ages ago, because the locality seems very familiar.
In today's goa, it's a struggle to find an honest eating place that offers good meals at a decent price.
May daad's tribe grow and once again regain goa's reputation for good food and hospitality.
Incidentally, your marathi is quite fluent Kripalji.
True, Rajeevji, Daad Desai's passion for what he does is inspiring.
I love the simplicity of Kripal. Enjoy Goa.
Please see chef ritika RUclips channel for food.....
Awesome episode👌 Love kripals comand of over multiple languages. He is local to many states. That makes his videos enjoyable. Hope you reach 1 Million hearts soon🥳
Long live the simple but great man & Ritz! Amazing food..makes me feel like packing my bags and being there right away.
Loved the konkani marathi conversation 👌
Kripal sir you should make a proper marathi vlog, impressed with your hang of Marathi.
Must say you speak excellent marathi. Fish thali was tempting...
Didn't know there were multiple Ritz's in panjim - all of them owned by one family..
Nice video...👏👏
Best Restaurant in Panjim Ritz Classic always. I visited this place during my honeymoon to Goa...... ❤️
Suddenly he started speking Marathi .
Kripal has lot of powers .
Wherever he lands he start speaking native language .
Marathi is the elder sister of Konkani .
Daad Desai sir and kripal both are hardcore foodies , from start till the end they were enjoying food. #happyeating.
Amazing.. remembering all my good memories of eating very good food over der..2008 to 2012...four years i was in Goa..this restaurant i will remember for my lifetime.
It's very nostalgic.very dear to my heart.
Desai sir's menu seems to reflect his Kshatriya Maratha/Konkan Maratha roots and cuisine from the Nova Conquistas( Goa ) and adjacent Karwar( Karnataka ) region.
Just mentioning this here because Kripal sir asked him if it's Saraswat cuisine or Desai cuisine?
Desai uncle's love for his wife & Kripals love for food tasting, delightful insights & his story weaving ability is the stuff of legends!! Loved the episode with the warm reception to a hearty eating & soulful editing 😊👏👏👏👏👏😍👍💯👌❤️
Hi from South Africa. Amazing video, with an amazing people, food, culture and of course a rich history. Keep up the good work both of you. If I ever visit Goa in my lifetime, I would certainly make it a point to visit the Ritz for a meal that looks delicious. Wonderful words of wisdom at the end of the video 🙏Take care.
Liked the zeal and enthusiasm of Mr. Daad Desai.
I think the Mangaluruian Meen Gassi is called Aamti in Goa & Konkan.
Been atleast 500 plus times to Ritz. With my dad, uncle, friends since childhood... authentic goan fish thali... M lucky to be one of the hungry customer for sea food at Ritz. Thank you Desai Saheb and his entire team 🙏🏼
As usual Kripalji, you have carved out one more heart touching & stomach filling excellent episode for food lovers. You not only eat with analysing the taste of the dish you eat, you go into recipe of it. Dissect its ingredients, and clarify how they help in getting the final toung watering taste. You also talk & mix up with the owner, shef, cook, waiter with due respect to them. Talking different languagees is your added quality. Keep it. Your Marathi is very sweet & I like it. You have given a new status, height to this food blogging which must have been started out as hobby or habit. You will be known as one of the pioneer personality of thi s extremely popular you tube show. Salute!!
You are very generous with your praise, Sanjay, I merely try to speak for the food and the experience as it speaks to me. Grateful for your kind words, I am happy you enjoyed the episode. Thank you.
I have been in Goa for about 3 years now and never knew this is the original Ritz. I always thought it's the one in Patto. Thanks for this video!
Same here..even i thought it's the one in Patto
Love Ritz 😘 their fish Thali is amazing yes. But also most of what they serve 💕.
Kripal amazing presentation of this episode blended so well similar to the food prepared @ Ritz and being enjoyed by you and also Mr. Desai. amazing Konkani Goan food experience Happy Goan Fish Eating :-)
I have tried Ritz. Excellent but simple sea food thali. Thanks Kripal for these memorable video.
My pleasure, Vasanth. 😊
its like homemade not very high on spice and fat.....
Watched this episode after a month but loved it a lot. Going to Goa is like a pilgrimage for me once every year but since last two years because of covid was unable to go. I have seen this Hotel Ritz ample number of times but never went to eat there as we visit my sister in law and food is always had at home. Now that I have seen this episode will definitely visit this particular restaurant and will have their lunch. Kripal I just loved the way you spoke in marathi with Mr Desai. You really are a multi talented personality. God bless you and keep it up 👍🏻
God bless both the couple owners of the Ritz food hotel in goa.loving pair, husband is very very lucky to have a supportive wife.
Definitely We will visit this restaurant in our visit to Goa.
there is no way on earth he looks 82.. astonished😮.. the thali looks fabulous and extremely reasonable for 200inr. cant wait to dig my hands into it next time i'm in Panjim

It's an inspirational story of Ritz. Thankyou Kripal. Mr Desai has established a great institution.
yours marathi and english is excellent. i learn alot of new words from your videos. thank you
Hope you enjoyed your food in this iconic restaurant... I thought of writing to you to visit this place without fail since you were in Panjim, i am so glad that these small restaurants are now getting the recognition which they so richly deserve... Thank you sir....
this is not small restaurant bro. The chain in famous in Goa.
@@catholicworld1 the chain started later on... They started first with this place and then high end restaurants... This place may not look grand and most of the time you won't find a place to sit and can be very congested so we see a lot of ppl preferring the other Ritz restaurant which is high end... But for me this restaurant of theirs is the best as far as food and Goan atmosphere is concerned... That's purely my take, people may not agree with me..
@@gr8sash ok bro. agree with you.
Fabulous food in all the outlets Kripal loved listening to your Marathi. Most unpretentious
Kripal sir tumchi marathi khup chan aahe .😊😊
Very nice, so glad to see you speak Marathi with so much ease 👍
Daad Desai Or Rohidas Desai is a legend restaurateur like most legends in his field he is comfortable the most at his first Establishment that he started with his old staff.
The founder of the Cafe Ritz and Cafe Ritz Classic ,Dad bab Dessai,is a honest and sincere person, and always ready to help anyone who approaches him with his/her difficulties. That is the reason I always tell him that his chain of hotels is God’s gift.
May The Lord bless him and his family.

Goan by birth, that thali reminded me of all aromas emanating from our homes across Goa, especially the ooman, kismoor, iswan.
Hope u get to try the mackerel kismoor as well someday (if u haven't already)
