    The reefing hook is clever and practical. Beyond it's reducing compression on the gooseneck, and weight aloft, but also from a reducing fatigue on the crew point of view. So then if one has three reefing points, one needs three reefing hooks? Am I seeing the correctly? Thanks for the cool vid!

    Thank you for publishing this, lots of interesting stuff. I realise there was a lot to present and get through in what was a short video. May I suggest you are bit more ‘searching’ with the technical bods when it comes to these high capacity generator systems and quiz them on the normal operating temp of the generator at maximum rated output, how output is regulated to prevent a burn out situation, what additional cooling is required (especially that 15KW monster). I am always very sceptical of brochure marketing hype (retired marine engineer) .Keep up the good work.😀👍⛵️

    • @SailHub
      @SailHub  Месяц назад +1

      Sure I can ask those questions for you. In general for the large motors and the likes are measured as constant output (I.e 100% duty cycle) that given, the actual peak performance is usually way higher but are limited for saftey. So there’s no issue usually. Although, they are often water cooled which to be fair I’ve not talked about.
      We will take that on board and improve for next time.
      Cheers for you support too, it’s really cool if you! Thanks, Chris and Jenni 👍

    Electric Hybrid - The Wynn's HH44 has a working hybrid electric add-on with - working regen. Works great/game-changer by reports, but it adds much to propeller complexity and efficiency in diesel, electric, and regen modes. One solution for everything is tough - but promising at the same time - if they can work out the perfect propeller.
    The Hook - I'm recalling that the hook system failed for La Vagabond because the weight of wind on their sheet was so great they couldn't retreive the hook (pull the hook out again)

    • @SailHub
      @SailHub  25 дней назад

      Sure, the wynns have a system that’s working for them. Our goal is to make monohull our build self sufficient… Thats going to be a mission for sure.
      As for the hook, I’m really not so sure how they could struggle so much. A large number of imocas, class 40’s etc manage it short handed all the time? I imagine as with most things on boats you’ve got to figure it out. Mind you, it’s an expensive thing to figure out, I like the idea sonI think I am going to make something similar and give them a try before we buy.

    For the electric outboards, do they have a XT60 solar dc input? Seems like when your dingy isn’t in use and sitting out in the sun, having one of those folding solar panel setups topping it off would be awesome! • @Tomm9y
    @Tomm9y Месяц назад +1

    The reefing hook is interesting, but one of the biggest forces on a gooseneck is generated from the kicking strap, or vang. That is more than a reefing line.

    • @SailHub
      @SailHub  Месяц назад

      I guess that depends on the boat. After all faster boats don’t need the kicker due to the apparent wind. But yes, your right, the kicker creates a lot Ioad mind you it’s not direct load to the gooseneck. Still, maybe better to relive as much compression as possible. Of course you could just pop a jammer on the boom too, I do like the jammer and the hooks too, not sure what we we will choose for the rig on new build though.

    Did I understand the Karver slab reefing hook correctly. For every reef I would need a hook and 2 lines led aft. So for our 3 reefs I end up with 3 hooks hanging from the boom and 6 lines led aft. I get no adjustment of distance from the boom or outhaul.
    Alternatively, our system also has no compression onto the gooseneck as we reef at the mast and our reefing lines are cleated on the boom itself (so the compression forces are within the boom?). As the reefing lines are tensioned to the reef clew from further aft we essentially have a reasonably functional outhaul for each reef. A lot less complex ;-)

    • @SailHub
      @SailHub  Месяц назад +3

      Yeah you got it right. The outlhaul on the hooks should be set and forget, if your reefing your not generally looking for any power from draft.
      As for your reefing lines being locked at the mast, that’s great.
      I guess you still have to go forward but more to importantly you still have a lot of weight on your leech form the lines. That being said if your not fighting for light air performance your all good 👍

    • @markthomasson5077
      @markthomasson5077 Месяц назад

      I sort of get it.
      Surely the leach line still has to be quite strong just to pull down / in the sail (the release can be very light) For most just using a slightly heavier Dynema leach lines would be enough.
      If you had a clutch on the boom, with a line release, you could have no compression on the gooseneck and still have adjustable.
      Thinking about it, when you may need to have a lower tension, it is light wind, so you can go forward to adjust

    • @SailHub
      @SailHub  Месяц назад

      For sure, your right there. Dyneema lines are a great way to improve things.
      The hooks are pretty cool I that you can use much smaller lines and it’s all ran back to the cockpit. Being able to to run them back to the cockpit without spoiling the light air shape is a real advantage of the hooks.

    • @SailHub
      @SailHub  Месяц назад

      Cool! See you there!
      Not sure which I would go with, most likely Remigo. It just feels ready for anything! Mind you, being able to remove a sensibly shaped battery from the Temo is a great advantage too!

  • @SustainableSailing
    @SustainableSailing Месяц назад

    The Remigo is very interesting. I wonder if it could do regeneration? Then with a simple mount on the stern of your boat could mean that your dinghy motor becomes a generation source when sailing plus an emergency rudder.
    Just wondering too. When used on the dinghy can it be locked on to prevent theft?

    • @SailHub
      @SailHub  Месяц назад +1

      Yeah they are pretty cool for sure. I believe you can hydrogenerate with them. Not sure about licking to the transom but I’m pretty sure you would find a way with your industrious mind!
      Most electric companies have a system to lock people out if there is no pass key (phone) for it so it renders it useless without the coded phone or password.
      Could be worth giving them a call here in the UK, Nathan is the chap you want, he is super knowledgeable and knows everything about them👍

    • @SustainableSailing
      @SustainableSailing Месяц назад

      @SailHub re the security. I love that we can remove the battery of our epropulsion and lock it in the dinghy bow locker. I don't think electronic disabling on it's own is enough.
      I love the idea of combining hydrogeneration with emergency steering and dinghy outboard (combining watt&sea, part of a hydrovane and outboard). Will keep them in mind for down the road.

    • @SailHub
      @SailHub  Месяц назад

      Yeah, I think we need to secure motors well. Mind you, do you take it for a hike with you?
      Generation isn’t likely to be ground breaking from it mind you, I’ve not tried it. I would imagine it will be on par to a spirit from ePropulsion. Which works enough to put it in a sales pitch.

    • @SustainableSailing
      @SustainableSailing Месяц назад

      @@SailHub We are able to use a standard outboard transom lock, wouldn't work with the Remigo as you can detach the expensive part from the transom mount. No hiking but with the engine locked to the transom without a battery and the battery locked away out of sight we feel it's a reasonable level of security.
      I'm motivated by our very limited "real estate" on the stern of our Rival 38, at times a modern very beamy stern seems attractive, then I simply imagine beating off a lee shore in a gale and the lack of space for things on the stern seems minor ;-)
      Despite the limited space I really want to find a way to get a boarding ladder, wind vane and emergency rudder on our stern. Significant hydrogeneration would be icing on the cake. I love stuff that works well together or has multiple uses.
      We can't afford a Hydrovane or even a South Atlantic S500 so we have gone for a Hebridean Vane (got a great bargain recently). Our wheel steering at the forward end of the cockpit makes it a challenge. Beyond that I'm trying to design a way of having a boarding ladder, Hebridean wind vane and emergency steering (ideally that could be steered either by the Hebridean or a tillerpilot) that all works together - but it won't be a top priority for a long while.

I think with ref to the Temo450 it definitely has its place and really depends on your usage as to how you’d rate it. For example if you had cruising kids… I think it’d be a no brainer. It’s also ideal to nip to the market in dodgy anchorages as you can literally swing it over your shoulder rather than leave it to be stolen and for some it may simply take the anxiety away from petrol outboards. It’s not going to help you in a storm but then again that’s not what it’s designed for. Hope you found some of the other bits of kit interesting 👊🏼
