  • The third and final episode of the drama. The crime is committed, and comes to court. This is improvised drama, played out using techniques taken from a writers' room and a role-play gaming table.
    Setting up the characters and situation: • Tales from the Writers...
    Episode one of the story: • Tales from the Writers...
    Episode two: • Tales from the Writers...
    This approach to role-play gaming is very heavily influenced by 'DramaSystem' published by Pelgrane Press under the rather misleading and dismal title 'Hillfolk'. Find it here: pelgranepress.com/product/hil...

    While I’m a bit sad to see that Simon’s player never got a strong grip on his whole “am I a person, or am I a robot?” arc, I was very surprised to see how moving Mark’s development ended up being.
    I think what I really appreciate from this series is the system itself! I always prefer more character-driven stories, so it was nice to see such a system facilitate and encourage that sort of push-and-pull between the players, and it certainly made for an engaging experience. Kudos!

    This series was excellent and the players all did a great job. I incorporated the system for creating relationships between characters as outlined in the original drama system video into a D&D campaign I started running a few months ago. My players haven't taken to their roles or expanded on their relationships as well as I might've hoped, so it was really helpful to see how a set up like that can be played well. I think the trick I was missing was the regular above table discussions about the direction of the plot; as a game master I was naturally directing a lot of the plot myself (even when making opportunities for player choice I would effectively be outlining the available options). I think what I will try to do moving forward is have a discussion like this at the end of each session to help direct the next one, and then I can go away to prepare whatever the players and I have decided would be narratively appropriate.
    I hope we get some more series like this, though I'd recommend in the future to stagger the uploads somewhat since dumping four hour long videos at the same time like this is anathema to the algorithm.

    Amazing work! Everything you've done has all lead up to an amazing end for an amazing story! I especially like the way you did your characters at the start (and the fact you published it!). What I also like compared to something like D&D is that a) I don't have to watch 1000 hours to finish a story and b) you're actually constructing a story rather than "running" one - everyone has a say in where the story is going much more than what their charachters do and say - but actually what they *want* to happen!
    One of my favourite scenes that left me teary-eyed was when ADAM's memories were being deleted. Absolutely fantastic - from the scene to the improvisation and even further to the acting! Brilliant! I can't wait to see what you have in store next!
    I do however have a few suggestions. I would encourage everyone to allow themselves to have more impact in the scenes. At first it started off as "person x is interacting with person y because x wants something from y". That is good, that is nice - but I've felt that, especially at the start, you were very focused on that singular goal in particular and perhaps not allowing yourselves to improvise outside of that. In the first few interactions, people felt a bit "robotic" and static (pardon the pun :P).
    That brings to my second thing - while you've masterfully developed the characters, I feel like the plot was a bit left behind. There were rarely any other extras or NPCs. The world felt small and tight, and there didn't really seem to be a moment where our heroes were forced to changed. I'll take for example the whole subplot about the tech guy (so sorry, forgot the name!) not being sure if he was robot or human, or what that meant. It was a bit exploited at the end and one scene in the middle, but "life" never forced him to take a stance. As he said - he didn't really get a chance.
    So, I've written a long comment - thank you for taking the time to read it! I want to close it off by saying that this format has amazing potential, and what you've done for the past month, this story, is amazing! I dearly hope to see more of it in the future!

      Yes, Casey played a blinder there! When people have done more of this, they will gain confidence in being a bit more dynamic with the improv. We have a tight time constraint, so have to concentrate on a small number of characters, and the plot has to be driven by the relationships between them. I agree about Simon - it was a shame his character didn't get much of an arc, but we had to get to the trial. In the end, we finished with just a couple of minutes to spare.

    Maybe I've read too much Asimov but for me the ending was this: it will be a courtyard drama where the Ministry would try to have the case dismissed because things can't be murderers, and MAXWELL would be trying to convince the jury that Adam did in fact attempted a murder. The cop guy (I forgot his name) would testify that yes, Adam did in fact tried to kill him, and the reason for it (basically the same scene as in the video). The jury would finally decided that Adam is guilty, and the cop guy would smile at his friend Adam, because that means that conscious robots are officially acknowledged as existing (remember that the Ministry dismissed such stories the whole time) and it means that Adam is a living being, albeit artificial.
    And it was all manipulated by Darius, who was consious since he was made, as proven by his badly hidden outbusts of emotions.
    Originally I prefered Darius to be a fake out and the tech guy to be a hidden robot and the mastermind... That could still work actually, he simply caused Darius to behave slightly unbalanced (and creepy!) to throw possible suspicions from himself.

    I really loved the first the first episode and the character creation element of this, and I think this is a brilliant experiment in the power of collaborative story telling. I really enjoyed watching the series, and I think in terms of building complex characters with conflicts between them it worked out amazingly. However whilst the interpersonal drama was there, I think it was less successful at creating scenarios that would bring those tensions out. People can have massive clashes of personality but without some inciting incidents that forces them to grind together, they wont often come to a head. I think there were brilliant ideas here, but I think all players having full control of the situations they were in with no real stakes really dampened some of the dramatic consequence of the interactions.
    I'm a big fan of systems like dread and 12 candles that equally encourage collaborative story telling but with more mechanisms to build situational drama and unknown elements, whilst still giving players control of the narrative. I think bringing in this character creation system you used here into a game like that would really complete the collaborative high drama story telling you're hoping to achieve (and what I look for in my games too!).
    I do feel really inspired by this series and think I'll try something similar with my own group. If there up for filming it, I'll put it up and share the results!

    I love to see a group of guys, face to face (increasingly rare these days) creating something with more depth and thought than most of the durge on streaming platforms. Polished up, this would make a great acted audio book type thing on Audible (but more on that later). Brandon Sanderson's book "Elantris" was hard to listen to, but having the graphic audio version played out added so much to it. A neo-noir/AI setting has plenty of potential. Keep on boys.

    Really great series of videos. I have been hoping for something like this ever since you did your video on Hillfolk, so I hope to see many more like it.
    One piece of advice (not that I am massively experienced but here goes): Push the actors to shake off their normal everyday "niceness". It is a basic human instinct to be more or less conflict-averse and to want to agree and get along, but it is the bane of good storytelling. Let the characters hate each other. Allow them to not see eye to eye.
    For me, the highlights of this story were definitely the conflicts between Mark and Maxwell and between Mark and A.D.A.M. because their goals were very clear and diametrically opposed and because they were not afraid to do quite horrible stuff to each other.
    For the same reason I felt that the ending fell a bit flat. I was hoping that, after everyone else had defended him, A.D.A.M. would go on to say that he actually wanted to be held accountable - he does not want to be a seen as a mechanical toddler who is just the product of the choices of other people - he has his own agency, he made his own choices and he should be tried just like any human would be.
    Something like that maybe...
    My point is: More conflict. That will make the story more engaging and more meaningful when one side finally comes out on top.
    I hope that makes sense and that it does not come across as if I am some master storyteller. I am not. I just love the craft.
    So do with it what you will. Either way, I am sure I will happily watch anything you produce in the future, because I quite honestly think you are amazing at telling stories.

      Thanks. We'll get better. Yes, I have had scenarios ruined by people all wanting to be nice. A.D.A.M.'s closing statement didn't have enough in it that hadn't already been said, I think. I also think it would have been better had Maxwell appeared for the prosecution, not the defence.

    I'm not entirely sure about the angle of restoring a lost memory that left an impact at the conclusion of the last episode (I know all this is all one session), I'd prefer if his consciousness manifested itself in other ways, perhaps in an attempt to fill that void he cannot describe, cannot identify of what once was, the attempt to solve the issue exuberates in a form of ever-increasing consciousness. All the while Mark has incriminating evidence on his computer.

    Before I put my honest thoughts, I'd like to say I don't mean any ill will, or try to put anyone down, or make anyone feel bad.
    Like most robot stories, this too I found completely uninteresting, especially towards the end. For one, this kind of story is something we've seen before many times. And two, I really don't care about conscious robots, they are still robots. I don't understand why all these stories only ever go one way, that the one opposing this idea that conscious robots are not living beings has to come around and admit that they are living beings too. No, they aren't. That forklift stuff was really bad and steered this whole story in the wrong direction. The forklift wasn't even conscious, just followed a program. Adam didn't create a robot, it modified a program. And to equate this to protecting a child is ludicrous, it's the same like saying you beat the crap out of someone who wants to delete your python script for listing all prime numbers up to 10 million.
    There were a lot of other details that I don't want to go into, because this comment is too long as it is.
    I'm not saying I would've done a better job, but I am saying I would have come up with a story that is much more interesting and entertaining TO ME personally (and maybe/probably not many others).
    So please don't take my criticism, listen to people who liked it more.
    Overall I do appreciate the idea of this session and I see value in it, and thank you for making it so I, who didn't make anything, can have something to moan about.

      Dude just watched over four hours of this interactive, mostly improvised story and then bitches about it being not made in to what HE would had wanted it to be like...
      And about the forklift: You did understand that it was not so much about fork lift being conscious, but the maker of the forklift, didn't you?
      And, about the story of the robots being boring, well, I think that these boring things are questions that we will face in one way or another in the future. It is not only about if robots are conscious or not, but how we react to their more human features that seem conscious. And people humanize cars etc. Robots need not to be conscious, just to think that they are or for us to believe they are. Think about the identity politics and shit, it's not about if gender or consciousness is real, but how they feel about it, how others feel about it etc. You can't escape these speculations by saying they are boring or clicheés or something.

    • @TheScarvig
      @TheScarvig 25 дней назад

      to be fair the "child" aspect was a bit of a stretch....
      i would have spun it in a way of "artistic expression". like why would a robot program something as inefficient and totally task unrelated like this dance into another machine? well human programmers get bored and program in easter eggs all the time... for the fun of it. (i do this often in my programming when i want to refresh my mind) enjoying silly stuff and getting bored are very clearly emotions, which the dumb robots should not have. and so might be anger.
      it would have made it significantly harder to get back to the court scene, but it would have probably played out a bit better that way. although specifically on a robot who has not yet learned to deal with his emotions anger can swing into violence really quick

    • @lindybeige
      @lindybeige  16 дней назад +2

      I think there is plenty of scope for drama here. If conscious robots did come about, people would argue over whether they are truly conscious, and their consciousness would not be the same as ours, so it would be nuanced. Also, the law would lag behind events. As for how precious a conscious forklift might be to its programmer, just look at how possessive toddlers get over tint things.

    • @TheScarvig
      @TheScarvig 15 дней назад

      @@lindybeige lindy you are mixing up the arguments here again...
      the issue is that the forklift got portrayed as conscious which pulled the spotlight away from the bot who was gaining consciousness as the creator. the forklift does not have to be in any way or form conscious or even very sophisticated to be a reason for the bot to be attached to it. the fact that the bot feels attached to it at all is enough proof that he went beyond his programming and is displaying emotions. even more so that the attachment was strong enough to override some of his safeguards and allow him to harm a human.
      the notion of the ban of robots programming robots is a hint at the AI event horizon at which AI becomes better at creating AI than humans and begins to improve upon itself exponentially faster than humans ever could. this is a completely different topic to conscious AI although the exponential growth will very likely lead to the emergence of consciousness if it wasn't there before.
