Just a few words of wisdom from a chicken associate. A raccoon will open that door unless you have a small deadbolt on it, assuming they find a way into the run and if you have bears in the area, nothing will stop them from getting into your coop or run. We take our food in every evening and we have an electric fence around our coop and run. So far so good, good luck.
As already mentioned in the comments, close in the tops to prevent bugs breeding in the water and paint the outsides to prevent algae growth. Also, the door latches will not keep out animals. Raccoons can open those in seconds, and the chickens can bang against the doors when they're squabbling and pop them open. A good positive lock on all the doors is what you need. Looking forward to your first clutch of eggs!
We've been catching cheap, relatively clean rainwater for nearly 20 years. Small suggestion: Cover the top of your barrels tightly with some kind of screen with an opening just big enough for your hoses. That'll prevent debris and critters from falling in. It'll also prevent mosquitoes from breeding in the water. Very nice addition to the project.
If you want something more glamorous make a chain drain so the water drains down several lengths of chain. You can make them or buy them at Lowes or other garden centers.
Looking good Ken, I always give a whistle when I have food for my chickens and they come running. And when I lock them in at night I make a clicking noise with my mouth and they head back into the house. Hope we get to see you crack that first egg in the frying pan.
Morning Ken! Two things you will need to work to control. Mosquitoes and green “slim”. The open tops will collect mosquitoes, bugs, and everything else that will fall into the barrels. Also, because they are not dark and covered, they will grow algae. Just wanted to give ya a heads up brother. Brian from Simple Homesteading
You can also put a couple of goldfish or minnows in the barrels to eat mosquito larvae. Have to find something to do with them in the winter though, maybe Mrs. Ken would like a small aquarium in the house :D
Have you never heard the expression ' chicken on a June bug'. Maybe only an Oklahoma thing. It looks like you might not let the bugs in for the chickens to chase. Before raising the 45k chickens we had dozen hens and rosters. The rosters got really protective of the hen house. A slingshot and black walnut took the cockiest roster out. I knew I was in trouble so I carried him back in the hen house. Before I could get out of the door he came to! And chased me across the yard. I was happy he was not dead. Of course, if you have rosters they have to wake the neighbors and tell you they are on guard duty every morning. I got my garden in about 3 weeks ago. Tomato plants did not like the 40* weather. I think they will make it now that it is warmer. My plans for rain barrels is on hold. I was looking at the ones with a screen mesh over the top to keep debris out. Looks good Ken.
Good morning, Ken! If you'd like to see the water cascading into the catch barrels, look into decorative "rain chains!" Some of the are really nice and may fit your ideas. Everything looks great so far, Brother. Hope to see it all in operation. Thanks for sharing another great video. God bless.
Ken that was hilarious at 16:06 when you said “the sun’s not shining the right way”. I think it was because there was a moon in the way preventing it. 😂 You do come up with some good ones. 😆😆. I think the chicks will enjoy their new Kenstead Kondo. Nice work!
Hey Ken! Are you going to move the wishing well into the run so the chicks can have water whenever they wish for it? 😜 I'm glad it's warming up some for you! Spring is my favorite season. Thanks for sharing!
Nice progress in this video!!! Greens are looking really good in the new house. Love the chicken setup. Turned out to be a lot of work, but it should be worth all of the effort. The Kenstead is coming along nicely!
You are going to need shade cloth for the run They dont do well in direct summer sun the door to the coop should have a second lock some animals can open the one on there now Great job Ken
Ken I think the metal sheets will definitely help. Wire mesh seems extra, but we are not the only animals that love chicken. I hope they all do well and live for a long, long time. Love the rain water too. I think, some clear tubing and turn it into a spring shape so the water twist and turns all the way down to the tanks. Mad Scientist Kenny. LOL
Ken, Nice job. I remember when I was about 6 or 7 (65 years ago) my grandpap had chickens and would have me go get the eggs. Then he would laugh when he heard me say ouch a lot from the chickens pecking me. By the way, you called both the first chicken you put in the coop Lily and also called the last chicken you put in Lily.
You can just use 1x2 (24”) pvc coated hardware cloth just like your metal. Lay it on the ground around your run and staple it to your base plate. Use a few rocks or landscape staples to hold the outside down. Works great. Good luck.
If you tuck their head under a wing they go to sleep. If you put them in a paper bag, they go to sleep. These chicken tricks are helpful if you are moving them father than your coup.
Hello Ken, those curlicues would work under your framework of the run and definitely deter digging under similar to Constantine wire but compressed flat. Just a thought for using waste material
Ken, it’s looking really nice! Love the chicken coop and run. If you don’t mind the mention to save you a little heart ache? The roosting board outside is too high and close to where the hens can be reached from the outside. The boards both inside and out have 2 edges on the top of them I would recommend routing the edges off the sharp top corners of the 2X4’s can and do cut the bottoms of the hen’s feet and can cause bumblefoot which can make it hard to walk and or infection could take them. The ramp needs a floor not a board, the board can stop boeing but they are already walking a steep climb the little slats will give them traction to get up if you just put wood underneath to walk on. You might want to consider an automated door for the chicken coop run, so that they can let themselves out in the morning as opposed to having to wait for you to come and unlatch the door. Not to pile on about the door latches that need to be hard latching and not break away. anything can open that up, just a thought. I wish you great success with your little almost hens from pullets. Last I see that the Rhode Island Red is looking 👀 more and more like a Cockrell. 😮😂❤
@@kenskarpentry You really do a wonderful job with all the things you build and I enjoy your videos. You are really a fun guy with great skills. I hope 🤞🏼 I didn’t offend you. I have been down the chicken 🐓 road for years and hoped to spare you any trouble I could. Told I got all pullets and got cockerels Rhode Island reds that took out my little tender leghorn hens. 🙏🏼♥️👋😊😁
I have a heads up about using hardware cloth. Hardware cloth will not let snow through. Chicken wire does allow snow through. . . . I was building a cage. 😮
Looks good,.....I have a Suggestion ....Planet herb & tea bed around the chicken coop. If you need suggestions on what to plant you can find it on the internet. It will help with smell & give you food on the table.
I took an old hola hoop and cut it down to fit around the top of barrels and stapled screen wire to it. It keeps out leaves, mosquitoes and shingle grandual.
What about a weather chain. if you look at it and it is wet, you know it is raining. If it is covered with ice, you know it is freezing. If it is horizontal with the ground, you know it is windy. Just as accurate as the Weather Man.
Fyi Ken the roost bar should only be no more than 2.5 feet off the ground and they might need more cross bars on the ladder to get down.Nice set up:) have a wonderful week. the roots bar should be flat they need to perch on a wide surface.
i would think about a good old hasp for your outside of the pen latches. cant tell if you have wire roof for your outside pen. you will need. (cats and racoons)
Those are some very blessed chickens, Ken. Love that coop!
Thanks 👍

We do have a couple families of black bears that travel through here. Hope they don’t break in b
Good day to all. 'Ken's Farm'.
Good morning!

Things are lookin' up down on the farm. Thanks Ken!
You got that right!
Looking good Ken, I always give a whistle when I have food for my chickens and they come running. And when I lock them in at night I make a clicking noise with my mouth and they head back into the house. Hope we get to see you crack that first egg in the frying pan.
Good tip! Yes waiting for that $2,000 egg
You can also hammer in some rebar around the perimeter to keep things from digging under as well.
Cool thanks
You may want to remove outside roost, otherwise chickens will park there at night and you will have to manually put them inside. Job well done.
Cool thanks

First thing I thought of was "those barrels are gonna turn green in a couple of weeks." Maybe spray paint them black.
Thanks I appreciate it

Wow, I didn’t think of moving the wishing well in there. :-)
Good idea with the metal around the outside of the pen on the ground. Then covering it with dirt.
Thanks
They’re going to be happy. God bless.
Thanks. I think so

Love your greenhouse and chicken coop.
Thanks
The ramp looks upside down, thanks for another great visit.
Actually I changed it
Put a chain for the water to follow on down and place barrels on cinder blocks to get room to fill watering cans from spicket
Cool thanks
Love all the little houses from thr green house to the chicken house quite talented.
Thanks

Thanks I appreciate it
❤great video and milestone for the chickens. Hope they settle ok🙏🙂
Thanks
Nice green house. Chicks will like their new place.
They do already
I bet they'll like the Coup better than the garage apartment.
Haha true
Hi Ken. Good to see the Girls in there new home & well thought out with the build.
Thanks
The chicken coop looks like a fun thing to build.
It was thanks

Thanks I’ll have to remember that
I’ve seen downspouts made from chains, might be pretty.
Cool thanks
Goooooooood afternoon, ken! The Coop is Open. YAY
Greetings. Thanks
Ken if you have an extra piece of chain, it would make a great downspout.
Cool thanks

Yes great idea
Good Morning. Love the video. Just a heads up. I would put a latch that will lock. Animals still can get in.
Thanks for the tip!
All I could say is
The safer your chickens are
The more eggs you will get from your chickens.
Haha true

Fantastic my friend can't hardly believe your weather 70 here high close too 90..off too work I go 😢🌴😎
Thanks. Possible snow showers this afternoon
Good hardware cloth is best .
Yes 😊
Add screen wire over the barrel . To keep bugs out .
Ok thanks
Be sure to cover your rain barrel to discourage making a mosquito farm
Ok thanks
looking good Ken we always put chicken Wire on the bottom also if anything try to get under they can't get in thanks for sharing
Thanks for the tip

Nice job
Thanks!
Hate to say your chicken ramp need to be updated to a flat wide ramp with lateral strips across the ramp but close together.
Thanks did it
That look like it’s a roster chicken supper coming up soon
Haha. Firing up the grill!
Good evening Ken it’s nice to see you have put your chickens in there new coop looking forward to seeing your next project all the best from Bryan 👍
Thanks 👍 I appreciate it
I know you gave them food and water off camera, right? 😉
Hope all goes well during the transition to their new deluxe condo.
Yes definitely
Good morning!
Good day
If you want to see the water flow in attach a "rain chain".
Cool. Might do that
👍🏻👋🇹🇷
That one shot near the end of your video was going to have the title, "Where the sun don't shine."
Haha
👍👍👍👍👍❤
Make sure you video frying your first egg😊
Haha ok!
I remember gathering eggs at Aunt Shirley’s, was always afraid they would peck me!
Haha notice I wore gloves carrying them out!
It’s good that you can repurpose the building materials that you been working with. That sheet metal will work well. See you soon on the next post.
Yes definitely. Thanks
Where is mr.Donold,see you soon,have a bless day😊🪻💜🇺🇸
Haha. Thanks for watching
Hey Ken ... I think the ramp should go the other way with the steps facing upwards. At least that's how I've seen ramps in other videos.
Thanks actually I changed it around today
that's what I'm talking about free water at last hope tax guy is not watching this thinking rain tax looks awesome tho Ken
Haha me too
i would think about a good old hasp for your outside of the pen latches. cant tell if you have wire roof for your outside pen. you will need. (cats and racoons)
Yes wire roof
Really loved this video Ken❤
Thanks
Maybe make a way to open/close the pen door from the outside.
Thanks
pecking doesn't hurt:)
Haha
As they say, should be black so you don't get algae. Put tops on spray outside black --- all done.
Good idea. Thanks
Alright new home are you going put their food and water outside or inside
Water outside
What if you use fencing wire instead of the sheet metal and bury it under ground.
I did consider that. Thanks
Could try a rain chain...?
Thanks
what are those locks you are using they are really good?
Yes they work great
Good morning
Good day
I didn't realize that,Chad is your son.
Yup. He sure is
You need to put food and water in the coop?
I left them both out during the day
Hello my our friend Ken
Do you have a vent in your greenhouse? Peg from NC
Greetings. Yes there’s a vent in the roof
Food and water, Ken?
Yup
Of course the water dish was over to the side?
Yes it was. :)
@@kenskarpentry yaaaa.
Water and feed in run and you didn't lock up the run door
Got it
don't forget water and feed
Definitely
Ken, where's the food and water?
It was right under the camera
Comment
Where's Greta?
Haha I don’t know
What about food and water? 🫎🦌🦞🌲
Yup it’s there
