Kangaroo meat has actually become quite popular and is a much healthier and more sustainable alternative to sheep and cattle. In a nutshell the killing of Dingoes to allow sheep and cattle to be farmed has allowed kangaroo numbers to built up to unsustainable numbers with the only option culling by professional shooters only. Strict controls determine what carcases are to be processed and eliminates the waste if just leaving a carcass in the paddock.

Kangaroo is available in the supermarkets and it has an extremely low fat content. If you try to fry it you need to add fat or oil it is that low in fat. It's best to slice up into strips and use it in a stir fry but add the kangaroo last and cook for 30 to 60 seconds. Any longer and it will go very tough/tuff. Kangaroo is also *very* low in calories! As for the national animal if you want to stuff people up as Emu into the list because both the Kangaroo and Emu are on the Coat of Arms.

It depends if you are talking registered players or total spectators. Cricket has more registered players than AFL, but the crowds are obviously bigger for AFL.

In the states where Aussie Rules is the dominant sport it is the most popular by some margin, but the expansion into NSW is heavily subsidised by the Australian Football League (AFL) and without that support teams like Greater Western Sydney and Gold Coast would collapse overnight as there isn’t the player base in those States to support two teams. The AFL gets the highest attendance at games and has the highest number of season ticket holding members, however the National Rugby League (NRL) gets the overall highest number of tv viewers, based on its popularity in NSW and Queensland and the difference in spectator behaviour where NRL fans are less likely to go to games but more likely to watch on tv. The sport with the highest number of participants is Association Football (soccer) which has more players than Aussie Rules, Rugby League and Rugby Union (the sport known internationally as rugby, but less popular than Rugby League in Australia) combined. Association Football does struggle for attention at the professional level as more people follow the English Premier League and the UEFA Champions League than the local A League, which has a more recent history as well as mismanagement issues. Interestingly the two rugby codes are in serious decline at the player level with Rugby Union having less than half the player numbers especially at junior level than it did twenty years ago, with Rugby League on the same track but about ten years behind Union in player loss. Both games are being increasingly perceived as excessively violent and parents are increasingly turning to Association Football and Basketball as junior sporting options. The fan base of both rugby’s and Rugby League in particular are ageing with the average NRL fan now in there mid 50’s- the game is more popular with Boomers and older generations than it is with Gen’s X, Y and Z and is in serious danger of going off the popularity cliff (Rugby Union is already on the precipice and starting to struggle commercially). Aussie Rules is staying steady in both player numbers and popularity, as is cricket (with T20 becoming more popular at the expense of the older forms of the game), but it looks like Association Football and Basketball are going to benefit the most from the decline of the rugby games. An important threshold was crossed in about 2012, when the number of people living in Australia who were born in Asia outnumbered the number of people born in Europe, with the Asian born population being significantly younger than the European born (who mainly arrived 1950’s-1980’s) and the Asian born population more likely to be starting families with kids growing up in Australia. Immigration from ‘traditional’ immigration source countries like the UK and Ireland has really slowed down and the only large immigrant communities from Rugby Union favouring nations that are still growing in Australia are from New Zealand and South Africa, although this isn’t likely to be enough to save the sport. (yes, Aussie Rules was played in Qld, Tas, but were just local footy & not a major league, & SANFL is a State League, as is WAFL, but none of those teams play outside of their State - except & rarely occasional special one-offs). Our biggest sport is AFL. States have different favourite sports, but the most watched and attended is AFL. Queensland is known for Rugby, Victoria is where AFL was invented, but every state has it's own (or multiple) AFL teams.
With regards to the most popular sport in Australia, it depends at what level, and what state or territory you live in. At the spectator, professional level it’s Australian rules first (except QLD, NSW and ACT), daylight second. The AFL draws huge crowds, plus it’s the most cashed up sport in Australia. Next is Rugby League (if you live in QLD, NSW or the ACT). Rugby Union is mainly centred around the private schools, but the Wallabies and Super 15 get good crowds. Football (soccer), is the biggest sport in Australia, at the amateur participant level, the A League used to get good crowds, but they have not been great. And of course cricket is definitely Australia’s national sport, with it being popular in every state and territory.
Australia is in Canada and we are plagued with Zebras and Giraffes, who knew. Most foreigners always get the capital question wrong but don’t worry I’ve even heard Australians say Sydney. We actually have two national animals, the kangaroo and the emu who both appear on our coat of arms, they are both animals who can’t walk backwards.

@@shermaddictedtorc8540 if you had actually spent some considerable time in the bush observing both mobs of kangaroos and individuals as well as emus you might have taken note that both kangaroos and emus can easily move backwards if the situation requires it. It is certainly not the most elegant or rapid of movements but it is ridiculous almost in the extreme to expect any successful species of animal living in a varied but mostly open range would not be capable of moving backwards when such needs arise from time to time.

Unlike American sport which enjoys gridiron and baseball as two of its favourites, Australian sport has cricket, basketball, rugby, soccer and Aussie Rules as part of its mainstays. In turn, rugby can be broken up into rugby and league. If in Sydney (and Brisbane) rugby (both versions) and cricket have strongholds, in Melbourne cricket and Aussie Rules are focal points, in South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania Aussie Rules dominates. As for soccer, cricket and basketball - all three exist with their own audiences. A better question is to ask - what is Australia's national football game - soccer, rugby, gridiron or Aussie Rules? It would be interesting to see what answer(s) is/are given to this question.

As for the Ashes - this is a focal point in the game and as the matches are currently played on the other side of the world in England which is enjoying its version of summer then it is obvious the game there is being played in our winter. It's best to slice up into strips and use it in a stir fry but add the kangaroo last and cook for 30 to 60 seconds. Any longer and it will go very tough/tuff. Kangaroo is also *very* low in calories!

AFL is bigger than Cricket, however AFL is a winter sport and Cricket is a summer sport, also Rugby League is nothing like AFL, but still a great game, even though I follow AFL.
It depends if you are talking registered players or total spectators. Cricket has more registered players than AFL, but the crowds are obviously bigger for AFL.

Cricket is the dominant summer sport in the whole country. Aussie Rules isn’t very popular in either NSW or Qld, which is just under half of the country’s population. In the states where Aussie Rules is the dominant sport it is the most popular by some margin, but the expansion into NSW is heavily subsidised by the Australian Football League (AFL) and without that support teams like Greater Western Sydney and Gold Coast would collapse overnight as there isn’t the player base in those States to support two teams.
The AFL gets the highest attendance at games and has the highest number of season ticket holding members, however the National Rugby League (NRL) gets the overall highest number of tv viewers, based on its popularity in NSW and Queensland and the difference in spectator behaviour where NRL fans are less likely to go to games but more likely to watch on tv.
The sport with the highest number of participants is Association Football (soccer) which has more players than Aussie Rules, Rugby League and Rugby Union (the sport known internationally as rugby, but less popular than Rugby League in Australia) combined.
Association Football does struggle for attention at the professional level as more people follow the English Premier League and the UEFA Champions League than the local A League, which has a more recent history as well as mismanagement issues.
Interestingly the two rugby codes are in serious decline at the player level with Rugby Union having less than half the player numbers especially at junior level than it did twenty years ago, with Rugby League on the same track but about ten years behind Union in player loss. Both games are being increasingly perceived as excessively violent and parents are increasingly turning to Association Football and Basketball as junior sporting options. The fan base of both rugby’s and Rugby League in particular are ageing with the average NRL fan now in there mid 50’s- the game is more popular with Boomers and older generations than it is with Gen’s X, Y and Z and is in serious danger of going off the popularity cliff (Rugby Union is already on the precipice and starting to struggle commercially). Aussie Rules is staying steady in both player numbers and popularity, as is cricket (with T20 becoming more popular at the expense of the older forms of the game), but it looks like Association Football and Basketball are going to benefit the most from the decline of the rugby games.
An important threshold was crossed in about 2012, when the number of people living in Australia who were born in Asia outnumbered the number of people born in Europe, with the Asian born population being significantly younger than the European born (who mainly arrived 1950’s-1980’s) and the Asian born population more likely to be starting families with kids growing up in Australia. Immigration from ‘traditional’ immigration source countries like the UK and Ireland has really slowed down and the only large immigrant communities from Rugby Union favouring nations that are still growing in Australia are from New Zealand and South Africa, although this isn’t likely to be enough to save the sport. The new Asian Australians generally prefer Association Football, Basketball and Cricket (those born in India are now the second largest overseas born group in Australia). Only some of them develop an interest in Aussie Rules and very few develop interest in either rugby codes. We may well be seeing generational shifts in Australian sporting preferences, with Rugby Union and Rugby League being the main casualties, and Aussie Rules losing some of its dominance in the southern states (where it will still remain the most popular winter game but by a lesser margin).

NRL is only played in 3 States, & Melbourne/Victoria only has 1 team, so no NRL league in the state. So NOT national sport
Traditionally, in Aussie Rules football, there was only the VFL as a major league. (yes, Aussie Rules was played in Qld, Tas, but were just local footy & not a major league, & SANFL is a State League, as is WAFL, but none of those teams play outside of their State - except & rarely occasional special one-offs). Even with South Melbourne Swans moving to Sydney in '82, AFL wasn't national sport. It was only with the Fitzroy Lions moving to Brisbane, that Ausssie Rules became more nationally popular & the subsequent 2 SA & @ WA teams joining the AFL + 1 more QLD team & 1 more Sydney team, has AFL become somewhat national.

With regards to the most popular sport in Australia, it depends at what level, and what state or territory you live in.
At the spectator, professional level it’s Australian rules first (except QLD, NSW and ACT), daylight second. The AFL draws huge crowds, plus it’s the most cashed up sport in Australia. Next is Rugby League (if you live in QLD, NSW or the ACT). Rugby Union is mainly centred around the private schools, but the Wallabies and Super 15 get good crowds. Football (soccer), is the biggest sport in Australia, at the amateur participant level, the A League used to get good crowds, but they have not been great.
And of course cricket is definitely Australia’s national sport, with it being popular in every state and territory.

Australia is in Canada and we are plagued with Zebras and Giraffes, who knew. Most foreigners always get the capital question wrong but don’t worry I’ve even heard Australians say Sydney. We actually have two national animals, the kangaroo and the emu who both appear on our coat of arms, they are both animals who can’t walk backwards.
Kangaroo meat is mostly used as pet food for dogs and maybe some cat food. Kangaroos are a national animal symbol mainly because they are so prolific and common, or least the two most common species of the Grey and Red kangaroos are. Kangaroos can often breed up during good seasons to plague proportions and need to be culled by shooters to protect farmlands and even native pastures. There are probably more kangaroos in Australia than there are people.

It is certainly not the most elegant or rapid of movements but it is ridiculous almost in the extreme to expect any successful species of animal living in a varied but mostly open range would not be capable of moving backwards when such needs arise from time to time.

If it was dry, it wasn't cooked well. Being very low in fat, it needs to be cooked hot and fast to medium-rare and no more...... unless you're doing a slow-cooked stew or curry.

We are the only country in the world that has animals on their coat of arms that are eaten, Iam a chef and have cooked Emu and eaten kangaroo (must not be cooked over medium rare because it will go tuff to eat), also I have cooked and eaten crocodiles as well as Turtle, Dugong (in Noth Queensland).

The question regarding sport is both subjective and misleading. Unlike American sport which enjoys gridiron and baseball as two of its favourites, Australian sport has cricket, basketball, rugby, soccer and Aussie Rules as part of its mainstays. In turn, rugby can be broken up into rugby and league. If in Sydney (and Brisbane) rugby (both versions) and cricket have strongholds, in Melbourne cricket and Aussie Rules are focal points, in South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania Aussie Rules dominates. As for soccer, cricket and basketball - all three exist with their own audiences. A better question is to ask - what is Australia's national football game - soccer, rugby, gridiron or Aussie Rules? It would be interesting to see what answer(s) is/are given to this question.

As for obsession - try living in Melbourne during a football season - Ashes is obviously prominent but Aussie Rules still dominates the headlines.

In terms of amateur participation, it is a bit closer, with a large number playing soccer and Aussie rules, but also decent numbers playing cricket, netball, (field) hockey and swimming.
