This is one of the finest movies ever made. Not only is the writing superb, but the acting is off the charts. And how ridiculously relevant! All aspiring filmmakers and writers should study this movie.
Great movie! Unfortunately youth won’t watch old movies. Especially in black and white 😂Wish this could be remade for all the Americans who are deluded into believing the clickbait fake news that’s being pushed down their throats.
Writer Robert Riskin deserves special comment here. He did an amazing job with this script that overflows with heart and a message of kindness. The pandemic, war and the depression had taken a lot out of people and this movie was full of hope for a better world. What do expect from the man who married the girl King Kong abducted?
This is a gem. Thank you for making it available to us. It gives me hope for USA. It’s timeless, and shows that some of the troubles we are experiencing are from a character that repeatedly raises its ugly mug.
The great Frank Capra, who will forever be a legend in film history, with this movie, as well as his other well known films like Mr. Deeds Goes To Town, Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, It’s A Wonderful Life, It Happened One Night, Lost Horizon, You Can’t Take It With You, and Arsenic & Old Lace
Brilliant story and script, superb acting with an outstanding Gary Cooper perfectly capturing the humble decency of "John Doe" and an excellent Barbara Stanwyck, top supporting cast and beautifully shot. Loved all the umbrellas at the convention and city skyscrapers at the end. Such an intelligent film, but with some great humour too. It's a quality of film that we just rarely see any more, today's films seem all about special effects, endless action sequences and cardboard characters. A memorable film with a great message.
One of the true all-time greats. Great story, phenomenal Capra directing, and fabulous acting by the two stars, as well as by numerous supporting actors, particularly James Gleason as Henry Connell (incidentally, a name apparently taken from the co-writer of the original script, Richard Connell).
I've had this movie on my PC for ages. Can you believe, me, a film buff, did not see this before? Wow, such a great movie! Barbara Stanwyck easily does the same great part as Jean Arthur did in other Capra movies. 10/10.
Frank Capra was brilliant; the stories his movies tell are timeless. It's as though this movie was produced and released just a few weeks ago, rather than approximately 100 years in the past.
Stirring stuff. Cooper was truly the epitome of American vernacular. Really perfect as the lead. Stanwyck was smart and believable. Thanks for uploading this excellently produced comedy. Stormtroopers and militias are back in fashion and the public are not sure what to believe any more. We all need to feel good and be our best selves.
Exactly. Cooper was perfectly cast as John Doe/Long John Willoughby, and it's hard to imagine anyone else in the role. There was no melodramatic overacting and no Bogart-y nasal voice or snarl that you heard so often from other actors of that era. His speech was very normal and natural, and he did subtle yet highly effective facial expressions on camera that most of his peers didn't do. In addition, he had the perfect look for the role--handsome, but sincere, shy, naive, quietly charismatic, and extremely sympathetic. He and Barbara Stanwyck had great chemistry here, just like did with Jean Arthur in Mr. Deeds Goes to Town.
I was watching this movie on "The Movie Channel 5.5" here in NYC last night and fell asleep near the ending so I looked for it here on You Tube and I am so glad you posted this classic movie here that we can see at anytime.
I've been watching old movies since I was a boy back in the late 50s and 60s. Not many hold up for dozens of viewings, but this one sure does. Thanks to CCC for the HQ upload too. It makes a big difference.
Besides being best friends Gary Cooper and James Stewart, and staring in two Capra classics "Meet John Doe" and "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" respectively, neither ever made a bad movie!
When Barbara Stanwyck accepted a lifetime achievement award from the AFI, most of her speech was dedicated to Frank Capra, who had told her that she had something to offer to films. An understatement! She shot to stardom quickly, and, if you know anything about her first husband, Frank Fay, you know that "A Star Is Born" is based on their marriage.
I got this film on DVD and was watching it tonight. 15 minutes from the end, it starts doing little 1/2 second skips. 10 minutes from the end, it starts skipping half a scene with each skip, making it unwatchable, obviously. I thought "Oh heck no, I am not waiting even one more day to see how this thing ends," and came here to watch the last 15 minutes. Thank God for this upload. What a masterpiece of a film.

Pitt is like an amalgum of Gary Cooper and James Dean. Although I suppose Pitt gets the Redford comparison often, but then I think Redford has a certain posture and way of saying lines which Gary Cooper seemed to have. Albeit, throw in Chris Cooper's accent inflection with Harrison Ford's tone and physical presence along with Redford's kind of insecure stoicism, Kevin Costner's laconic everyman quality and probably add a pinch of some Tom Selleck for what amounts to the essential ingredients of Gary Hooper stew - many decades prior to any of those stars. Cooper kind of set a template for the throwback leading men of the 70s, 80s, 90s.
@@Geronimo_Jehoshaphat I agree with your comments. I continue to be blown away by Gary Cooper's timeless quality. First, his looks were incredibly modern, and it's hard to believe that he was born 120 years ago. Even when you see his movies from the '20s or '30s, the women inevitably look dated (their hair, make-up, and eyebrows always give away the era), but he looks very modern and puts most of today's leading men to shame. He really had the whole package, much more so than any of the other leading mean of his era that you mentioned. Second, his acting was very modern also. There was no melodramatic overacting and no Bogart-y nasal voice or snarl that you heard so often in actors of that era. His speech was very natural, and he did little, subtle things on camera that most of his peers didn't do.
This movie and "Mr Smith Goes to Washington" should be manditory for all student in grade 10. Or even grade 9!! If Hollyweird would produce even a couple of these a year they might have an ounce of hope for being beneficial. But because they tell the Gospel story at the end in a meaningful powerful way they NEVER will. But I'm glad others are making The Chosen!!!
It's interesting watching films like this by Capra which are populist and sentimental and compare them with films by Preston Sturgeon with are also populist but sophisticated. Or should I say cynical? But I like them both for they express an America of the past and still continuing.

Walter Brennan. Thank you for your life and your artistic acting career. What a man!
I dont just love this film but I BELIEVE IN WHAT ITS ABOUT OF PEOPLE HELPING N LIVING ONE ANOTHER OF HONESTY N INTEGRITY. THATS WH A T LIFE IS ABOUT.
Very good movie very good concept relevant even today
Too good movie! Very humorous and reflects the mood of the people
I truly love this movie! Leaves you thinking long after its over.😊
Most of Capra's movies does.
I just love James Gleason. Can't say enough about Barbara and Gary, and Walter✨✨✨✨😊
Stanwyk is gréât in this movie
This is a movie a major network needs to rerelease
Capra? Cooper? Idk - seems a little too good for us, no? Well, if it withstands our barrage then it must be worth something, thx
I think this film will kill the misconception that Capra was always fluffy and sentimental.
It's interesting watching films like this by Capra which are populist and sentimental and compare them with films by Preston Sturgeon with are also populist but sophisticated. Or should I say cynical? But I like them both for they express an America of the past and still continuing.
Thanks for the memories😊👍🙏
Nice classic 👍
