Here's a little secret that a lot of people don't know about Benchmade, they as a company do not give a flying fuck about you. Sure individuals that work there probably have a ton of passion for the work they do but the corporate side of it just cares about the bottom dollar.
@JonsBalisongBlunders I'm starting to feel that way as well. The prices for mediocre materials on all their knives is embarrassing. They are trashing the brand. Won't be long till they will be under the glass at Walmart.
It's a nod to the 1977 Ralph Bakshi film Wizards. Peace/Necron99 is a character in the film, he wears a red suit and has yellow eyes. The first benchmade Bali was designed by Jody Samson and nicknamed the Weehawk, also from the film. The knife might be crap but the lore is pretty neat.
deylan doesn't even sell bent blades as blems, and benchmade sold a bent blade on a full priced product. This product is absolutely baffling to me, and has discouraged me from buying ANY benchmade products. I kinda wanted one of their folders, but now I don't want to support the company in any way.
For being such legends in the early balisong days to this disappointment is amazing, this was their chance to make such a comeback but with the weird options they choose, weird materials and insane price? If it was dipped in gold and thrown after me, I still wouldn't want it.
The fact that your Nabalis Vulp, the Thomas Default, the myriad of my friend's clones that I've flipped, and even the Nabalis Canyon has better specs, build, qc, and performance than this insult of a paperweight speaks volumes for how out of touch Benchmade as a knife company is. It is so tragic that the originators that brought the term "Butterfly Knife," to life have fallen so low. I don't even know who this knife is supposed to be for in benchmade's cartoon dollar sign eyes. It's definitely not for knife collector edc enthusiasts, since the blade and construction look like it'll collapse in on itself if it were used as anything but a box opener. It's definitely the furthest thing from a balisong grail, since it's a living example of what to NOT do when designing a balisong. Above all, it's not even comparable to even the budget balisong scene in today's market, since this balisong fails on almost all acceptable qc fronts to justify its existence. To put in perspective, for $500, you can buy an LDY Cygnus, a Squid Industries Tsunami Trainer, a Machinewise Titanium Sasori, and a full menagerie of high-end knives that are built for customizable performance in mind. Nabalis made a balisong to look like freaking cheese, and that looks like it's built 100x better than what Benchmade presented here. And that warranty ... can this legally even be considered a warranty. Man, true capitalism at work here folks. Congratulations Benchmade! You have pioneered a new age in this hobby by making the first ever CCC Grail! What a freaking joke.
Wow that bend is horrendous. Looks like it's close to a full millimeter. I would guess they are heat treating after machining which is always a bad idea for precision parts like balisong blades. That's why Deylan does hard milling on the stock after he he treats it. Totally unacceptable. If I even bought raw steel stock and it was that bent I would demand a refund, let alone letting a finished product go out like that
Bench made never made sense to me. Knives that are ridiculously expensive with atrocious tolerances when you consider the price. Like I feel like they would be alright if they lowered their prices. But $400 for that trainer is unbelievable
Hmm ngl I fell outta love with Will Hirsch videos but these new ones I really really like, this is nothing but an honest review and I love the energy a lot and the fact it’s not massively over the top
Honestly this is insane to me how a knife company this well known and has made balisongs before could create something so horrific. Its sad to see how expensive it is for what you are actually getting. Sounds and looks like it might be worse than the spider knife :).
I am baffled how this knife came to exist, how did nobody stop this Also bent blade out of the box is absolutely crazy, Benchmade doesn't care about this product at all
this further solidifies my choice to wait for the clone, I had a bent blade on my $35 naut clone and I was able to fix it and that's acceptable cuz it was only 35 dollars and a clone....the necron is LITERALLY a scam
It’s really unfortunate that Benchmade refuses to listen to their customer base. It’s not just their balisongs either it’s ALL of their knives. Seems they’ve gotten too big to care. Can’t wait to see y’alls review on the main channel.
Sadly, this is the epitome of corporate greed. As long as people buy it, which they will, then Benchmade won’t give a rats a$$…. Those bastards!!! Hopefully something can be done in the future about this. I think Ethan and Brandon are right as well, a lot of people don’t know this is an absolute rip off 🤢🤮
im actually so let down. I have such good sentiment of BM in the balisong space. Sure, some of there bali's have missed the mark for me but at least were priced appropriately. Hearing they made a new knife that is this expensive had my hopes high that BM would set a new standard in the US space once again. $500 is where you really need to compete with the better balisongs ever put in production, and yet.. you summed it up perfectly its a betrayal. and please dont give it back to BM to rectify. this is the product they gave you, and ultimately one they would sell to the community. Maybe give them the opportunity, to be nice and also see how they react, but a main channel video with no criticism held back is deserved, and the most beneficial thing i think you can do for the community. Awesome videos, I never have commented on one before but this atrocity made me want to say something.
Instead of throwing away warped heat treat parts, what we do at the machine shop (for parts where this is okay) is send it to heat treat a little oversized, and then when we get it back we grind them down to size. This means not only is it level but you also have a clean nice finish
This is so funny. You talking about how the necron has blade rub because the blade is bent made me realize my superfly, which should be in great condition is bent 😂 I was like “yeah mine has blade rub too even after tuning it, how is that possible?”
I am a Benchmade fanboy when it comes to folding knives, but this Necron is crazy bad/terrible, like will said, “for the balisong community.” I recently purchased the Talizong Z Tanto ($310) and Squid Krake Raken Titanium ($420.69 👌🏻) and those are 2 of the 10+ knives that 💩 all over the non-existent value proposition of the Necron. Benchmade CAN machine aluminum/titanium and the fact that neither of those elements are in the Necron should leave this knife in the sub $200 category easily. Bananas that this product came to market as it, but at that price point is truly mind-blowing.
a lot of loctite and unhardened screws are gonna need a soldering iron to heat it up and get it out, any cheap soldering iron will do but holy crap this is bad bad
This video got me to get completely disillusioned about Benchmade as a company. I used to think they were an amazing knife company, I used to think they were rad. Now I just think they're insulting the balisong community with this joke of a balisong. For the company who popularized balisongs worldwide, and who gave it the "butterfly knife" name, which everyone in the world recognizes today, this is just a sad balisong
We knew it was a disappointment before it was released. Hardware sucks...washers yadda yadda yadda. I have been flipping this thing for a few days now and honestly, I like the feel. Reminds me alot of my ssv3 and rep. I haven't had any of the problems alot of people have been complaining about. No blade rub on my knife. Tune is actually pretty good for washers. Bouncy. Feels pretty close to bushings. I will agree that materials do not justify its cost. Some good ideas here just to much money. Hopefully they take these reviews to heart and give it another go. I really want them to succeed. Alot of history. Hopefully we can save it's life with some good pricing on some good mods. Let's start with some better hardware BM.
i am baffled about the bent blade, principally for the 400-550 USD pricepoint i can tell by your voice throughout the video that you are in disbelief i am quite surprised on how bad this is
Thank god Ben is still doing bushing installs only way this hot garbage is even relatively feasible. My disappointment is immeasurable especially because I like the design

Let's make it high in price so people really want it. It's just a marketing trick. Unbelievable. My Chinese balisongs are probably better quality. Thx Will great content.❤ Just how it is.
SSV3 Is a solid knife. Im waiting for V4. Yes 150 bucks and comes with trainer blade and live blade. Ti Handles. Necron could have been so much more for just a little more effort ad-nd and materials.
I'm late to this but, Benchmade has been known for a long while for having terrible QC. The only thing they do well is customer service. the blades on their folders are known to be gambles if you get one thats bent or not. It's sad. People see the butterfly and just think its good
Seeing how most of the community didn't like the 6X and 8X series, the many mods for the 51, I don't have faith that Benchmade can make a good stock balisong for the price. The 4X series was good for its time, but that time is over and they don't hold up by today's standards and that legacy means nothing if they can't make good balisongs today.
you would think for a BUTTERFLY knife benchmade would knock it out of the water. its literally called butterfly because of benchmade. but this is just another example of how removed from the knife community benchmade is. they give mediocre products with bad QC for top tier prices. just because they popularized balisongs and invented the axis lock they think they can pass of overpriced blades and people will still buy them. it sucks because im actually a fan of benchmade. my 531 is one of my favorite knives and got me into knives. but at this point they are just cashing off of their name.
Don’t get me wrong I’m a benchmade fan. A lot of there classic designs have been absolutely perfected over the years but as will said they don’t have the facilities to produce a Bali to modern standards. It was a completely different game when they were last making balis
This knife is not worth 500 dollars. The ldy cygnus? Is around the same price as this. If you have the money for this, please do yourself a favour and get a cygnus, or literally any other knif3 in the price range, you will more than likely be a lot less disappointed This thing has steel liners. 20:57 Having blade rub while frozen is definitely a centering issue instead of a tolerances or design issue issue... unless the blade is bent. (I'll keep watching and I HOPE that's not the case. Edit: Nevermind, what the hell.) That said, this piece of garbage is still an absolute afront to the balisong community. Even though they were free, you should send them back to Benchmade and tell them to keep them. Like, the community just needs to take a stance against this madness. Edit2: Seriously, is this a prank and this thing was actually made by Benchmark?
Actually insane that this even exists. It makes a lot of sense considering bm's lack of care for anything but money, but oh my goodness. Actually such a worthless company.
Any small head torx that has factory loctite ive found boiling water in a small pot and dipping it into said boiling water will free up pretty much any loctite. Had to do that with my fragment folder from brs.
Oh what a surprise Benchmade made something that is kinda trash that's priced WAAAAY more than it should be and has garbage tolerances...who could have ever seen that coming? 😂😒
Maybe ya found why they're so expensive. Only medical grade stainless is magnetic. Regular old stainless steel is not magnetic. Sooo either it's not actually stainless.. or it's ridiculously expensive stainless.
Will, how did you get your 51 to not be a rattly tap filled beast? I just got the Flytanium blade and not only did the Benchmade screws strip almost immediately. The thing has the worst tap and play I've seen on a knife since the old days of flea market die cast specials. It's pretty much garbage. I have Chinese clones that put the BM51 to shame.
A LOT of effort haha, it isn't really worth doing anymore tbh. At the time back in the day it was one of the only options so it was something to do, but not anymore
Just picked up a minty 51 . Seems like they are going downhill with their balis. Especially when they started out as a company making Balis. I’m really rooting for them. Also waiting on Microtech to make some damn Balis lol !
I’m not rooting for them. I kinda think they’re just greedy corporate geezers living in their PNW fantasy world, expecting the everyday consumer to pay their whole paycheck for a stiff-out-of-the box $30 Amazon trainer quality. Benchmade is an insult to the flipping community and Filipino heritage
I WANT them to succeed. If Benchmade, the company that introduced balisongs to America, created a GOOD one?? That would be GREAT for the community! They would get GOOD balisongs into shops that have NEVER carried them before, and potentially spread the hobby to new places. It's sad.
@@WillHirschFlips @WillHirschFlips I did want them to succeed in the past, but I don't think they can recover. They price their products, folders and fixed blades included, way too high nowadays. If I'm being charged that much, shouldn't it at least flip? My first impression of it was a model in store that binded up and wouldn't flip. I just don't see it at all, there's a clear disconnect between designers and corporatism at benchmade. They really fumbled the bag. Like others have said, I'd LOVE to be proven wrong, but I just don't see it with the necron or their potential overpriced future products.
benchmade seem to have apexed at the 4x series. the 51 was.. pretty good.. but after that, its just been a lackadaisical approach to putting out something that will return money.. they dont seem to understand the community anymore. wouldnt it be a good idea to just get input from real flippers... before trying to make a good flipper for them? i am so confused by them.
Honestly you should put this on the main channel so it gets more reach imo without backlash benchmade will never change
Oh we will be releasing a BIG review about these things ahaha

Benchmade really, really relies on their name. Sad that a 78$ amazon bought Thomas Default, is leaps better than an over 400$ benchmade.
Were you able to get them to fix it or send a new one ?
Can you please tell me where you found the hardware for the Benchmade 51?
You sure that blade is bent? Does the thicknes taper toward the end?
Chad 51 chilling on the table : 🗿
Where could one find those T8 screws for the 51?
This video was hella entertaining, L benchmade
I just learned how to blue ball T6 screws 😂 7:00
🤣🤣
benchmade seem to have apexed at the 4x series. the 51 was.. pretty good.. but after that, its just been a lackadaisical approach to putting out something that will return money.. they dont seem to understand the community anymore. wouldnt it be a good idea to just get input from real flippers... before trying to make a good flipper for them? i am so confused by them.
