Love the details you provide about these areas Paul. I'm considering a move to Farmington or FH in a couple of years and the way you talked about it has me really hyped!
MY family moved to a brand new home off of John r and wattles back in the 70's when they where starting to build subdivisions. Troy High School had the biggest drug problem they actually put kiddy narcotic cops that looked like high schoolers. I guess that helped the problem.
As a lifelong SE Michigan resident who knows all these places, you're doing a great job quickly communicating the "vibe" of each area. A random residential street in Ann Arbor, Ferndale, or Farmington might all look the same from just a picture but the communities cater to different people.
Just as I suspected most people who relocate to Metropolitan Detroit prefer the Oakland County suburbs. They are now more diverse and a little bit younger with better schools than Wayne and Macomb counties, therefore it’s understandable. When I was younger and starting my family lot of people who could afford it when they moved out Detroit headed for the “Hills”. That would be Farmington Hills, Rochester Hills, Bloomfield Hills and Beverly Hills and Birmingham. It’s interesting to see that people still are drawn to these suburbs. Troy and Novi are good places to raise a family. More young people choosing not have children, I wonder what will be the draw to these communities in the next 10-20 years. Will it be a shift back to urban living or will the older suburbs rebuild and people will return more to the inner ring suburbs instead of these exburds given they are quite far outside of the center city.

I lived in Troy from 1977 to 1989, and I never knew fences weren't allowed. Had to put the dog on a leash. We moved to Birmingham right after and had a fenced back yard.
Decent picks. No fences give the illusion of space & some huge homes sit on postage stamp lots the need all the help they can get including no sidewalks. Going out on the street isn't cool if you have young kids with bikes, walkers, etc. There are other very nice reasonable suburbs around Detroit & all you have to do is drive around to check them out.
We are planning to return to the western side of the metro area this spring. My question is are there any developments geared toward senior aged folks like us ? I just subscribed to your channel and so far have learned a lot. It's been a very long time since we left the area , but are really looking forward to moving back.
Hi Doug! Thanks for watching and subscribing! Yes, there are a few communities but not many. Send an email my way and we'll discuss a plan paul@movingmi.com

She's lived everywhere up there. Since I have no idea what real cold is, we wanted to try living up there for a year and see if it works out. So not planning to buy, looking to rent. Paul is right. West Bloomfield is more ethnically diverse and is similar to Farmington Hills especially along the Maple corridor and along Orchard Lake. However, West Bloomfield is a big area and there are parts which are very similar to Bloomfield Township.
It would be nice to hear about some places that are oriented towards raising a family. Downtown areas are for single hipsters, and most dont want to raise a family in those areas.
