Apologies for the bummer of a video. I had a hard time making this one and keeping the language at a "G" rating. It's just really disappointing to see where we are with a company like Adobe. Y'all PLEASE share any alternatives that you've used and are pleased with the results and process!

      Continuing my previous comment,
What made me abandon Adobe again is that in Photoshop v25.9.1 there was a checkbox for "I give Adobe permission to use my images and associated data to train Adobe's generative AI models"
Some people reported that this was checked by default if the user had checked "Yes, I'd like to participate" under "Photoshop Improvement Program"
Anyway, to me what this means is that the code is most likely already implemented in Photoshop for reading the user's local images as well. Whether or not Adobe makes use of it, nobody knows. They have removed the checkbox in the meantime.
There are countless cases already where various companies had falsely identified user's images or sounds as illegal, and as a result those users got in really big trouble.
False positives are a real danger. Yes, statistically false positives will happen to maybe a small percentage of users, but a "small percentage" can mean thousands or even tens of thousands of people. It's not worth it!
Louis Rossmann has some videos on this topic, I highly suggest watching those.
I'm actually currently trying to figure out the best way to switch to Linux, mostly for the same reasons. For example see Microsoft Recall, it's horrible. I've been using Windows since forever and Mac for the past 4 years or so for some work, but I really don't like macos. Not even a simple Cut-Paste operation is possible without a complicated Command-Shift-Option-Whatever. It's horrible.
I've narrowed it down to either Ubuntu, Fedora or Nobara but I'm still looking into it.
Ubuntu seems to have some telemetry but it's not too bad.
Some contributors of Fedora had proposed last year to add opt-out telemetry but it was very vocally rejected by most other contributors and by the community so it didn't make it into Fedora. This shows that Fedora remains ok to use.
Nobara is a reconfigured Fedora that allows very easy installation of creative and gaming software, including DaVinci Resolve, Nvidia drives and much more. The downside is that it has a very small community so far.

Okay. I whish people would stop saying there is no alternative to Adobe.
Photoshop alternative is Affinity photo. I have used Affinity photo for a while. I have both Adobe, and Affinity. In some ways Photoshop is better, in some ways Affinity photo is actually better. It's faster and has most of the same tools. It doesn't have the AI, that's actually the main difference. It has clone stamp and remove, etc.
It has a perpetual licence and is cheap for what it does. It's professional software..

Well, I have both, Affinity Photo and Adobe Photoshop (CS6 is still running on one of my machines, and the current CC) - and I go back to Photoshop again and again, because something is missing in Affinity Photo that makes things much harder. Not only for work (where I simply need lots of Photoshop features that are completely missing, like batch processing using actions), but for my photography hobby as well (where I don't need as much exotic features). I don't make my life miserable to "punish" Adobe or to "get free". That said - I wish Affinity apps would actually have the missing features to get away from Adobe products …

    • @ed61730

    • @c.augustin
      @c.augustin 16 дней назад

@@ed61730 You forgot InDesign! While it is possible (to a certain degree) to use AI and PS files with Affinity Designer and Photos (but it is outright dangerous if you don't know the limits and non-obvious errors on import both make, especially Affinity Designer), there's no way to actually use Affinity Publisher on InDesign files (yes, it can open IDML to a certain extent, but results are crap in many places, luckily often quite obvious). And it's not only high-end agencies that use Adobe CC, it's even most medium and smaller ones. Only the lower-end ones might resort to other tools, and in some areas they actually need to use something else to stay afloat (like CorelDraw, which can open files no Adobe program would even try to import; Affinity Designer can not hold a candle to good old CorelDraw in this regard). This statement is from experience, as I tried to use Affinity apps to "replace" my Adobe apps for certain tasks, and at the one or other point I use them to do things that don't work with Adobe apps. And I still use CorelDraw to convert stuff so that I can use Adobe apps to work with it.

Thank you for the excellent video James. I was a professional stock photographer (never with Adobe though) and now am a retired digital painter and graphics person. I've been using Photoshop and Illustrator since 2004, but with the new terms of service (**especially 4.2(?) where it says you are giving them permission to sublicense and use your work), I decided to pull out altogether. Well, let's just say I'm trying. After 3 full days of trying to get them to cancel my subscriptions (I paid annually but waived the remaining time left, which was significant, in return for them cancelling my subscriptions and deleting my Adobe account), I still have an account. Adobe doesn't seem willing to cancel my account like they promised, so now I still have an account, but no programs. They DID cancel my subscriptions to Ps and Ai alright, so if I wanted those back, I'd have to buy them again (not a chance in 'some-place-really-hot'), BUT I see after 4 more days I still have an account. I have the cancellation confirmation emails (it took quite a few emails to get them to do it) and screenshots of all the chats we had (in the first attempt, they kept me in the chat for 1 full hour, then simply abandoned the chat), but that doesn't seem to matter to them. Further, I can't delete my cc from their site and according to them, I still have the pay-as-you-go 'subscription' to Adobe Stock. That's probably why there is no option on my accounts page (in the Privacy section) to delete my Adobe account. I'll be going at them again on Monday, but I will never, ever sign up for another Adobe product again because of this. I simply don't trust them. As for alternatives, please have a good look at Affinity Software (I'd recommend the whole package). Maybe not as fully featured (little to no AI - that's a good thing though, IMO), but it works very well for me and in many ways is far more intuitive and easier to use than Ps. It's coded in a far more modern way. Hope that helps.

The reality is that all the competitive products will be competing with the "value" of AI features found in other products. We will see this same pattern in all products and companies (Capture One, Evoto AI, Retouch4me, etc.).
GenAI is a multi-industry disruptor (for good and bad) and we have to fight/find out how to adapt and grow. Ultimately, I hope it is the human experience that will attract our customers with an individuals brand, experience, and style.
Please note that I am not suggesting it is morally ethical (above competition with products and photographers); I see that is a larger problem in our human nature.

Right now, I am really really loving Affinity. There is a slight learning curve with a few tools, like some of the brushes and their brush system, which has a way of making dynamic brushes. I noticed that some stuff is still there but may be called something else. Coming in as someone that already knows photoshop, the learning curve is pretty quick to get over. I like to do digital painting and there are some brushes in Affinity that are just amazing! There is a different quality to what they do compared to Adobe, but I like it.

JQP is my hero. Love your work brother. I was a pro photographer in the fashion field. Share your pain. And saw this coming when you could generate more background or add elements that were never there like a dog. The models all became bad and every client would say they would fix it in photoshop.
This has not just started with this latest release. As soon as we moved into the digital era and all the housewives became photographers it was the beginning of the end. You needed no skill anymore to be a photographer. One would just look on the back of the camera to see if they’ve captured an image when previously their whole role would’ve been wrecked and would’ve not discovered their errors until The film came back from the lab.
This is the progress. AI will create some of the most amazing images ever seen with only a prompt. Get ready for the entire movie industry to be gutted along with any other photographer who has any skill set.
The future no one will have to know a single thing about Photography. Everyone carries a camera in their pocket on their phone already.
The reason AI is so incredible. It is because it has been trained on the most amazing images that have ever been made, books that have been written, as well as everything else that could ever be known by humanity and every single language you would find it hard to compete against that .
Copyright and ownership is a thing of the past. It is the greatest theft of humanity of all time make no mistake that your images have been used to train the AI in someway or another whether you know it or not it uses this very RUclips video to capture any image it can and all your other videos .
Most of all the work that we know of today will be performed by robots using advanced AI.
What took days of planning and days of shoot and other days of editing will be condensed into a one minute prompt. Prompts will be corrected until you are satisfied with the result all condensing weeks worth of work into a matter of minutes. Everyone at this point will be a great photographer. People will use their cell phones for the reference of themselves and then create images that never work. It is already happening today.
Be clear this is no longer a software issue. A human superstar talent like yourself is now as obsolete as a slide ruler.
I own hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of quit equipment that is no longer to make an image. The children have decided that great photography looks too staged and too perfect and prefer something that looks like it was shot with a cell phone to something that was crafted in a studio and well lit .
Just think what digital filter has done that makes any girl a model.
Adobe is in survival mode along with every other cameraman manufacturer way of Eastman Kodak. The ones that are hardest hit will be the talent that can no longer survive with such an unlevel playing field.
When the moms entered the photography business, there was no way to compete for jobs from people who would shoot for free. The same way you will not be able to compete with the AI.
My 10-year-old son will be able to produce amazing photo quality images with no photo knowledge whatsoever. All that will matter will be the idea and the shaping of that idea into creating a product that will entertain people for five minutes.
The world, as we once knew it within the next five years will have completely vanished. What will be left in its place will no longer depend on one’s talent or years of learning.
With infinite supply, the cost of an image will be zero.
Creative individuals like ourselves will be able to make images with no work at all.
I have had the great fortune to work with many of the top photographers, and what I learned was the only difference between them and any other guy with the camera was the decisions that they made An image is never finished until the artist is completely satisfied.
Something new is among us, and it is time to grieve the death of Photography.

Adobe hasn't addressed one of the main issues. Anyone doing work for clients, work under NDA or using materials under fair use doctrine should not use Adobe products. They demand a license that we may not be LEGALLY allowed to grant them in these scenarios.
If you are editing photros or video for example for a client here is a concrete example, I'm currently editing a videography clents dance recital videos that he does for a bunch of dance schools foe example). My client owns the rights to that source material, not me and as such I cannot grant Adobe a liocense to that material.
Now they finally tweeked their ToS and the license is granted only when oyu use their cloud services but what tools and services run locally VS the cloud? How will we be notified when new tools or updates to existing tools switch from local operation to cloud based?
Example: Firefly is cloud based, your image is sent to their servers to be processed so you just granted them a license to that image. What about Robtobrush 3? I THINK that runs on the local machine but hypotethically if they decide that Rotobrush 4 runs on the cloud ... will we be notified? What about the video auto transcription? Is that cloud based or run locally on your machine? I don;t know!
And that creates a legal risk.
I dropped Adobe the moment they went subscription. Currently I use.
Premiere / After Effects | Davinci Resolve Studio
    Audition | Reaper
Photoshop | Affinity Photo and Krita (more for digital drawing / painting)
    Illustrator | Affinity Designer
    inDesign | Affinity Publisher
For lightroom, there are less options. I shoot Canon so I;ve been using Canon DPP for adjusting my RAW files.
One of my problems is that I am trying to move away from Windows as well (Recall was the drop that tipped the vase, that and telling me my Ryzen 7 & RTX 3070 PC can;t run Windows 11) and the Affinity suite doesn't have a Linux version ... otherwise 98% of my needs were met with Mint Linux (have it running in Dual Boot).

Appreciate you bringing this up. The biggest handcuffs for me is just all the work that is placed into a catalog with ratings, tags, edits etc. I switched cataloging systems before to On1 several years ago to save the subscription fee. It had a catalog migration tool and did a decent job at a one way conversion. When I started making more money with photography, the Lightroom improvements like AI masks were productive enough to switch back. That discontinuity really made that change period difficult. Overly verbose request is if you make a video covering alternatives, it would be awesome to include the catalog migration options (both ways). That never really gets covered. That’s more intimidating than re-learning a new tool set.

They use it for all their marketing and even head shots (yes, they now use AI generated photographs of themselves) and I'm sure in a few years AI will be able to generate photos of houses inside and out which will eliminate the need for a photographer all together. You may say "oh, no they'll want an actual photo of the house", but I say look at the HDR and house photos. The houses pics are already fake. They do not look that good and sharp in real life. The entire RE industry is about fakery and lies. Why stop now, right? Remember "learn to code", it's now "learn to prompt"

If generative AI will give credit or royalty to the original creators, that would not be a problem. However, current image AI is scraping other people's creative works for their generative algorithm to produce derive work for free.
Why would any creator allow their work to be scanned and used in derive work without compensation?

On one hand, as a shareholder or a photographer I think they should be putting a lot of resources into AI, it can be incredibly useful, especially for a one person shop to pull off your vision efficiently. I’m sure they will continue to improve their AI capabilities and cash in on them by starting to charge for AI credits on top of subscription costs.
It’s mind blowing how they are taking unnecessary steps to do so that brazenly violate their customer trust and rights and the ridiculously poorly thought out marketing materials and messaging to their user base of photographers. It’s mind blowing how a company with that much resources isn’t coming up with a better way to serve both goals. It would be great to see it start to erode their market share to make them re-consider their stance.

I don't use PS enough to have an issue changing to something else. My anchor is LR, which houses my decade+ history in catalogs and edits of nearly everything I've photographed, published, sold or shared. I realized recently that I don't actually have finished copies of much of my work, because I publish directly from LR to my website and to my printer, and used to do that to Facebook. I don't have final edited JPGs of the majority of my work I've delivered, except the stuff I sent to media since I had to upload that manually. It's time to work on that and then look for a new catalog system.

Adobe just became "the most known" and therefor companies also used it, that's all. Unfortunately many people think that Adobe is the "only professional" software and they are SO used to it, that they completely lost sight for alternatives (some of them even with better stuff that Adobe nowaydays, depending on the software). But I sure hope that people open their minds after this and turn away from Adobe!! That company really needs to feel a negative impact rn imo! I really think Adobe sees more profit to be had in selling to marketers and corporations directly, cutting out the photographer as middleman. Photographers and graphic designers are the people who got adobe to where they are today, no? Nice way for abode to throw us all to the curb - the usual Profits over People.

  • @LadyFairChildVideo
    @LadyFairChildVideo 18 дней назад +1

i think they hit a nice market , aka the "lazy photographer". people that are not situationally aware of composition and what is in the frame of their photos. so , many lazies have been using the AI generators to make up for their laziness . yes, people literally removing other people from a picture, putting another object that wasn't there, putting lighting that wasn't there. so yes, many photographer's images are indeed as fake as they can get, and there is very little actual lighting/composition talent out there. plenty of beautiful images, but also alot of fakery.
and of course the SA and pr0n people got a hold of it as well, so its overall a bad situation. that is why back in the day we concentrated more on knowing how to photograph and using the dark room properly. the digital age made people lazy, and gave them delusion of grandeur.
let's say, Adobe, Affinity or whoever disappeared completely, most photographers would have really substandard images, if it wasn't for fixing them in "post".
invest in your gear, lighting , background selection and you'll be good to go. you don't actually need photoshop if you know what you're doing.

I've never uploaded anything to their cloud and I don't do stock stuff...but honestly based on some of their recent response videos from their creators/reps/employees/whatever...and just the direction they seem to be going, gross copy in that ad, squirrely behavior overall, and yes the price hikes (which I have had happen to me over the years)...dare I say it might be time to switch. A slower month like August could be perfect to learn DaVinci Resolve - and I've heard decent things about Affinity photo editing. *James Popsys just did a video breakdown on another photo editing software but it didn't really entice me too much.
I admit that I'm a hypocrite from time to time and betray my own principles, and I get that most of my data is being monitored and sold (and I accept that to a certain degree for ease of use and most of our augmented technology in today's world), but man as far as principles go and sticking to them...this might be a good one to take a hit convenience-wise, ultimately save some money, and just not support them anymore. Thanks for the video James!

The really deeper dystopian reality of our daily lives? When you are even first discussing the details of a shoot with a client, your phone, tablet, smart speaker/microphone listens to every word and every detail. When you decide to drive and meet with them in something like a Tesla, that location, the route taken, time/date, along with video in&out of the car and the surrounding areas is recorded. If they gave you an access code to enter their gate, the device either heard the code and/or the cars side camera watched you punch it in. There are complete podcasts on how many methods there are where our lives are surveilled every day with our smart devices.
I joined X, formerly twitter, and now I must send a selfie photo for facial biometric analysis, along with a government-issued ID, to Israel! I kid you not. If you refuse to turn it over, no revenue for you...
Adobe and many others are just jumping onto this "Data on you is the next Big Oil" bandwagon. It's hard to discuss the plausible nefarious scenarios that may play out from all of this in the years to come without sounding like a conspiracy theorist. But if you're not recognizing that a potential control file is continuing to be built every day on every aspect of our daily interactions, you're probably hoping to remain in blissful ignorance.
The solution isn't an easy one due to everything now vying for our personal data. Make sure the benefit of using the product grossly outweighs the potentially negative aspects of everything you agree to send to them.

It’s a bit frustrating to see that it’s taken this long to snap the industry out of the “convenience” trap we’ve grown so accustomed to that you mentioned.
The reality is people have BEEN sick of this shit for so long, 10+ years now at least. The fact that only now, after this, something so blatantly bold and insulting to an entire industry that it amounts essentially to a loud and clear “F* you, that’s why, what you gonna do about it anyway?”…. Only now there is a growing rally to finally start casting votes with our wallets.
Truthfully, this should have happened such a long time ago, really around the point they introduced their greedy subscription model. I can’t understand why anyone would consider even waiting to see if they will walk this back or revamp their TOS only due to such an intense backlash that they may possibly retain their users. This should be the last straw, the end road, the point where some imaginary convenient ease of use or the trappings of sunk cost fallacy no longer can justify continually feeding the mouth of any company guilty of such foul business practices like Adobe has demonstrated time and time again.
When will the people finally say it and mean it: enough is enough!
