Thank you, I'm starting out my guitar journey having played for years! I think I have a lot to learn, I'm 65 and I never learnt anything properly. Now seeing what you know..... also the first thing I noticed is wonderful tone, clear sharp no bends or vibrato. I've owned a 1972 music master bass for years. When I had it rewired the workshop told that it has e guitar pickup. Perhaps that's why the guitar sounds so good through the amp. All the Best Si 😀

Around the 17:00 mark is advocated to learn something you never use to actually play music.
I waited for the reason to do that and I heard some vague "the learning process is different" idea that was not convincing and not elaborated on.
This is mainly the problem I have with jazz musicians: they will tell you to learn every position of every scale, even impractical positions in keys you never play or that you could play in a familiar form by retuning to Eb.
There is an Adam Neely video that also illustrates my point where he explains how he says he should be practicing every 12 chromatic scales up and down his bass, and then explains why he doesn't because he has no time and the process literally takes all day.
Yet still jazz musicians will tell you to learn all this stuff they don't have time for and don't use. It really blows my mind.

i am proud to say that the only thing i could not do was the jazz inprov, and a few of the chords. i turned 15, two weeks ago, and live in the Netherlands. so berklee is not gone be my college, but now i know how to prepaire for my audition for primary eduation for the conservatory of Amsterdam. so altought i will probebly not go to berklee, this still helpt me a lot!

In the conservatory of Amsterdam, you don't have to worry about scholarship because it is given by government instead. But getting into a top conservatory in Europe is really harder compared to Berklee. This is because of the fact that there is more competition and you are required to be exceptional in your playing. The things Tomo was talking about are actually elementary knowledge and won't guarantee you entrance in Amsterdam (it won't get you a full scholarship in Berklee too btw.).
@@bleromafia thanks for the information, i know i still need to studie hard, to get there. I am happy that i still have a couple of years left to learn. I hope, althought the big amount of competition, i will still get in, in a couple of years.
I'm not saying Berklee is easier, it really isn't but the entry procedure works differently. At berklee you might be let in easier, but you'd have to pay your fees almost completely (this will cost at meadt 30 gand). The great thing about this is that they let in people who might be on level 3-4 enter and really improve themselves oer a few years.
Now when it comes to getting a full scholarship is where it gets tricky. To get a full scholarship you'd have to be top of the top and this spot is taken by people who have been preparing for their audition only for a full year.

I would rather write a really cool sound with some really cool effects and just shred out whatever comes to mind. Haha. Although it takes a lot of knowledge and patience to learn all these different styles and techniques…. I just don’t have the patience for it. I am really impressed with all that you know. Must have taken forever to learn all that.

Don't worry! It's so simple! Without specific preparation ... no miracle! No magic, no luck! It's all pure hard work! So you can learn anything if you are interested in.... Never late! You can analyze your own music by music theory. Fun!

I attended Berklee before Tomo and didn't have to audition. I was a student of Lenny Breau and he signed a letter of recommendation for me. If I auditioned, I surely would have failed. Lenny was a great player, but terrible teacher. I left Berklee after 2 years. If I had an instructor like Tomo, I'm sure things would be different.

Thanks for being honest about your experience. There are a lot of great teachers out there, but unfortunately there's even more bad ones. It's a shame that college is advertised as this one-size-all approach that you're 'surely going to get the most out of', but the reality is your situation, not everyone ends up with the best teachers, not every highly ranked and recognized college has the same quality of teachers each semester. People come and go.
Bob Moog taught electronic music at UNCA before I went there. He wasn't teaching it when I got there, and I can firmly say that no one was. Yet they STILL advertise that Bob Moog taught there. I bet he literally taught one or two classes, total, for one or two semesters, total.
Do you happen to live in Maine? I know he lived there for a while and as Mainer I love to hear about those who had connections to him.
I was awarded a partial scholarship from Berklee but never enrolled I really regret it

This what I have been wondering for years lol it's like applying for med school and they asked you to perform a surgery to evaluate if you are a candidate or not to go into med school lol you are applying to enter to learn how to do that
What do the various levels mean? Level 2 you're not getting in? Level 4 maybe admitted? Level 5 a scholarship?
Any level you can get in. In order to get scholarship & upper classes... a little better... Level 2-3...
Would it be worth auditioning on guitar if I’m 48? I already have three degrees and a career but I’ve always wanted to study the guitar and I’ve love the two year performance course.

Yes! Summer Time is a little too easy! Chord melody of All The Things You Are (Play chord melody once & solo once) etc.

Here's the best tip in the world:
If you are going to college, for a degree, ask the people who want you to spend THOUSANDS of dollars what your job prospects will be immediately after graduating. If the only answer they have for you is "Well you can teach other musicians or.. you'll be so ACCREDITED, so you know, gigs and stuff", then you need to seriously ask yourself if that's the path you want to go in order to further your music.
You can study music intensively, for four years, while getting private lessons from an amazing teacher, without paying THOUSANDS of dollars to go to a university. Guess what? You're going to be in the EXACT same position after those four years as you would after four years at a university. Truth be told, you will probably make LESS connections by going to a university, than actually being out in the community and city you live in, playing, making connections, getting gigs.
If you're in college for music, you're going to have a lot less time for your OWN gigs than you will for studying, ensemble rehearsals, ensemble performances. There's always more to learn with music, you can always get better. At some point with practical degrees, you've learned this subject, you know this other thing, you've learned it. Universities just do not have the capacity to set anyone up with actually being ready for a career any differently than studying a subject privately on your own.
You may work better having a teacher pushing you, great, keep taking private lessons. Save yourself thousands of dollars. Play gigs around town, do the grind, make connections yourself. After 4 years, you're going to be in an infinitely better position in the same area as any music student who's been spending 6-10x much money as you have.
Thanks for sharing! Good explanation. Basically "You never know" Each way is great for someone. No absolute correct way or correct answer. What if John Mayer did not go to Berklee? Maybe he tried being the best guitar player (seeing many amazing guitarists in Boston) then if not.... he may did not find his way to song writing?
My case, if I did not get my full ride to Berklee.... Simply I didnot have any chance to go to Berklee... my case I never had gone to America!
@@TomoFujitaMusic It's definitely for some people, but for those that have to foot the bill 100% themselves, or even 80-90%, it may not be the optimum choice.
The point you make about John is a valid one, what if he hadn't of gone there, would he be any less of a guitar player now? Maybe. Would he be a different guitar player now? Definitely. Everyone becomes the musician they are over the series of events we each call life. If John hadn't of gone on the path he did, he may have never wrote the songs that he did. I do firmly believe that he'd be just as good and talented as he is now. I can't speak on the industry connections he gained at Berklee, or his career in general, but I'd venture he probably made connections that got him the deals and success he has now by being out there playing, not from knowing the right professor.

It was very interested John's reaction at Berklee first few weeks... then after midterm... he really shifted toward his song writing part than guitar playing part. John is so talented because he really made his hard work! (Even now! He works his ass off all the times!) Thank you!!

I have a friend that I'm sure 100% can get a scholarship since he's very very talented can play everything, but unfortunately from the Berklee website I don't think Berklee accept non US citizen for a scholarship? Too bad since he won't be able to afford going there.
That's not true! Scholarship is a part of prepare performance audition & interview... someone could play really incredible & not so good explain things on their goals... then clearly will fail!
