the reason why driving or racing/simulation games are good in VR is the locomotion. There is no fake feeling of using an analog to move and you also can put a fan to make the immersion more realistic! I really think all Racing games should be VR compatible since you are wearing a helmet in real life, wearing the Headset will make that feel even more real!

That fan idea would be legit.. even better if you could customize a controller to power the fan on and off, aka pressing/holding the trigger turns fan on & then releasing the trigger powers it off. Probably could do this without wiring the controller to it persay by using a software to do it when you press & release that trigger button, then the software sends signal to fan via a wireless switch to toggle it on and off. This should work good for racing games since you usually would just be sitting to do it anyway unlike other VR games where you may be moving all around during gameplay.

As someone that owned 7 motorbikes and rode for 30 years, the visuals are pretty damn realistic. Sound, no, not even close. Crashing, most definitely not (1 broken leg and 3 motorbike write offs and 2 slide outs from water on road), specially given several people have died doing the Isle TT.

I lived right slap bang on the course and each year the roads would be closed when there are races. the devs seem to have managed to do an excellent full scale rendition of the tracks and environments. (building by building) if you go to Ballaugh Bridge (which I think is near this section of the track) there is a super pub/restaurant I highly recommend you visit. You cant miss it as it is right next to the famous Bridge. thanks for sharing. I am deffo gonna play this on my VR and get a cup of Gas in front of a fan when i play it lol.

I am an experienced motorcycle rider with lots of trackday experience and when I first played Ride 5, I could almost not get around a single lap. I crashed constantly even with all the driving aids. However, enter UEVR... On my first time in VR I did several laps on a superbike without a single crash - high speed. It is mindblowing how much easier it is in VR. It just felt natural. I used an Xbox controller in both cases. The most important thing about riding a bike is to be aware of your vision and look where you are going. Especially around hairpins. I love it I love it!! Front brake to slow down, rear brake to "trail" when cornering as and when needed.
A front brake on a corner will cause the bike to want to straighten up, a rear brake on corners will allow you tighter turns (Just don't over do it).

Just imagine when us slightly older generation of people, used to play games like Street Fighter, or Mortal Kombat, in the amusement arcades as kids, and how impressive the graphics seemed to be at the time. We couldnt even imagine what the future would bring. And this game is on an household console or PC. It is crazy how advanced technology has come on, in such a short number of years, and even Street Fighter was released only a few short years after games like Space Invaders, or Pacman.
Not so much with arcade games, but technology in general, scares the shit out of me.😂
It comes around, gets improved, and becomes normal, everyday technology, that gets taken for granted. It is not even noticed how fast and how much technology can change our daily lives by most people. Especially the younger generation. Many not realising, that there was a time not so long ago, that mobile phones, were something that only rich businessmen and Del Trotter had. And a rare commodity.
As a kid, if you wanted to get hold of a freind for a game of football or something, you had to physically go and knock on your friends front door, or ask permission to use the expensive call rates of the house-phone in your parents house.😂

As someone who rides motorcycles as their exclusive mode of transportation, and is very serious about it... the idea of playing this game in VR is a bit terrifying.
You see, I'm afraid that being able to crash and just get back on the bike with only losing time might break something in my brain. I can tell the difference between VR and the real world, but that doesn't mean some part of my brain won't take it too seriously.
I'm also concerned that the game might not have proper steering physics. I can't tell from this video, but... if you don't ride motorcycles IRL, then... motorcycles don't turn or corner like you probably think they do.

I'm a VR user and I can PROMISE you, as real as you *think* it feels to experience motorcycle riding in VR, it's not... It's a whole different experience when you are actually sitting on that bike, feeling air rush around you so hard that you're afraid the air alone will pull you off... The pushing of the left handlebar to lean left, the fear and sensation your mind experiences as you wonder just how far you can safely "push it" as the bike starts to lean....then the whole "am I going too fast for this curve? I can lean it further and make the curve but I'm scared...but I have to...." These are all things riders experience, especially when newer. The rumbling of the engine and vibrations of everything. Feeling every little spot in the road radiate through the bike and then your body. Trying to remind yourself not to squeeze the damn handlebars so hard and you didn't even know you were until your hands started hurting for no reason. haha, yeah, I promise, it's completely different! Cheers.

The problem, in general, with racing games is that you don't "feel" the speed enough in curves. Even if you take a peek at the spedometer, you hardly realize that you're going thru a corner at 200+ Km/h. Good thing you have the "indicator" which turns to red if you are speeding too much.

Well there are rigs for that now. Sure they still cost a pretty penny. A tilt and yaw base will set you back about $1000. But it's on the side of affordable. But that's the thing with sims. If you want to have a realistic experience you have to go from a gamepad to a steeringwheel and from there to a direct drive etc. In reality it's just a fraction of the cost of a real racing experience.

I think devs look at the raw percentages of users on Steam who own a VR headset and think it isn't worth supporting. What they miss is that the VR market has a big overlap with what they see their target market as, and that VR support would get a lot more race game fans interested in buying their game.

If Valve hadn't pushed the VR movement towards using hand trackers, I wonder if the goal of just sitting VR gaming would have caught on more, such that games like Witcher or Red Dead, Metro, Tarvco, etc would have built in a more simple "VR view" mode. I think there was way too many people unwilling to stand up for such long periods of time for standing VR to ever get a strong enough foothold to make its way into mainstream games. Fingers still crossed of course, but If I were gaming right now, I'd be asking devs for the "VR view" mode because I think just that is such an awesome way to view game worlds that artists put so much effort and talent into. IE, the Mines of Moria survival game out recently. Its 3rd person, but it would add so much to explore those levels "being there".

Quick tip for getting better, get all your braking done before a corner, then tip it in, then throttle up through and out of the corner gradually depending on bike/grip level! (Probably most like a RWD car to be fair)
Bikes aren't like cars though, try to keep steering inputs to a minimum when cornering, and certainly try not to brake much whilst doing steering inputs. Hope that helps.

Its not as simple as you maybe think, adding VR to racing games takes a LOT more resources than you think it does, as a result it costs a lot more to make and a lot more time to make it, hence it isn't always a priority to add it. I love VR, and I wish all games would come with VR, but I am trying to give you a small insight into what goes into "making" racing games.......VR means a ton more work. (been making racing games for 20+ years now)

    • @NukeMarine

As shown, the VR portion is pretty much out of the box for games using Unreal Engine. Agreed that now developers need more interactive cockpits and rigged player models. They also have to be careful about moving the camera between scenes and doing cut scenes. But that technically could be ignored as long as the head moves in game. Basically, most the hard stuff related to making a good VR game is already done by making a good racing sim. The last interactive part could be handed off to a VR specific team (like Team Beef has started to do with their new company).

@@NukeMarineyup, Its not the VR bit that is hard, it is building the assets to support VR that becomes massively more costly than building a racing game without VR.

Unfortunately have to agree with Mark here. When you’re buying a AAA product, people won’t accept the limitations they are willing to with something like UEVR, and rightly so.
If it was that simple, devs/designers would just do it, but as Mark points out theres a ton of dev and asset work to do (and then obviously retesting) , …and it’s a shame to say, for limited reward atm as the VR take-up is nowhere near that of flat platforms
Then ask yourself how often you hear “I don’t really play racing games” meaning it’s not the largest slice of the gaming market either - so you can understand the focus on flat
However I completely agree all driving games should be released with vr support, but that’s why I’m not a businessman :D (15 yrs in racing dev)

Have they absolutely nailed what England looks like...? If they have, they've clearly failed to properly render the Southern 100 route, because the Isle of Man is not in England.
That aside, while I would agree that racing games on the whole benefit massively from VR support, well... that's statistically correct, because most racing games are driving games, and really, motorbikes are not a good idea.
There's a Spanish guy who was working for a fitness gadget company, and he wanted to get VR working with a static pedal cycle so that people could have the full experience of being there. He abandoned the project because he (and all his guinea pigs) might start off OK, but they'd eventually fall off, because they would try to lean. I reckon that having a VR motorbike game is going to lead to players falling over... not all the time, but often enough that it's a health-and-safety nightmare. The relative motion of the camera is also going to be pretty extreme, so people who suffer motion sickness -- even mild varieties -- are going to quickly lose their lunch.

Gotta lean into the corners. 😉 It's not uncommon for racers to touch knees to the ground. I'm not a racer, and never scraped my knees on the pavement, but I've come pretty close. I always wanted to join the 200Mph club, but was never able to quite make it. The best I could ever get was about 186Mph. ...Still scary though. I'm older now and have too much to live for , but I think I'll likely see about getting this game. Perhaps I can achieve in VR what I couldn't in real life. Thank you for the suggestion. 😁👍

*Slow* Aim to reduce the majority of your speed while upright, before you start turning
*Look* Look at where you want to exit the corner, not the wall you're about to smash into
*Set* Set the throttle to a constant power during the turn to ensure the bike keeps turning smoothly and predictively
*Roll* As you start to straighten up, roll on the power progressively, until the bike is nearly fully upright, then dime it
