    Toyota’s Aygo X city car has been released at a time when many brands are leaving the segment. So with more opportunity to steal a significant slice of the market, what does Toyota’s latest model offer to tempt you from the likes of the Volkswagen up! or Hyundai i10?
    Unlike its predecessor, which shared tech with the mechanically identical Citroen C1 and Peugeot 108, this time the Japanese giant’s city car has gone it alone. To make the most of the brand’s in-house know-how, the Aygo is based on a shortened version of the platform used by the Yaris. The Aygo X is quite a bit longer than its predecessor, however, but at 3.7 metres, it’s still a compact city-focused machine - albeit one with an SUV inspired twist. A jacked-up body and plastic body protection give it a more serious look, but despite the new underpinnings, the Aygo X uses a 1.0-litre three-cylinder motor that traces its roots all the way back to the original, 2005 Aygo. Will this be its undoing? Nicola Hume finds out in this full review.

    There is a good reason why the car is cheap and popular......ultimately, the car has not been through significant changes and therefore manufacturing and dev costs are at a minimum. It does not need a new engine, this triple is wonderful and does the job really well. The problem today is that we set an expectation to end users that they need a car that does 0-60 in 3 seconds and has a top speed of 180mph. For most, this level of performance is simply not required and this is the reason why cars are so expensive and can only be purchased via a PCP agreement. Conspiracy maybe :) More cars should be like the aygo, back to basics and relatively cheap to own.

    • @andyantonioap
      @andyantonioap 2 года назад

      But it's not cheap to buy anymore. It's £15000-£20000, now how is that cheap? You could be a nearly new real car for less!

    • @bankruptpensioner
      @bankruptpensioner 2 года назад +3

      @@andyantonioap relatively, this is cheap for a starter car (sadly). However, I have just found on eBay a 2021 for £11000, and a 2017 for £6500. Nedd I go on. The real challenge here is that the prices of the cars are so expensive that this forces people down the PCP route (which is just like a long term hire of the vehicle) where at the end of the contract, the renter has no asset or any value to show for the financial investent of the period of the contract. Best idea is to save hard, then buy a 2017 model. Continue saving then buy the 2021 model mentioned above after selling your first 2017 model. The challenge here is no one wants to save money - they need the product right now. Hence, the world survives of finance. Sad really however...

    For some one looking for a first car or just a city run around for the shops etc this is perfect! Never understood why manufacturers never put effort in to small cars. When ever the launch a small car is sells well until they start making them bigger with every model update and folks stop buing them cause they are no longer small cars. City cars like the original polo are now as big as golf's and yet demand for the up! Is crazy. Then the original 206 sold in buckets then they made it to the swollen 207 and it stopped selling as well, then the new 208 is smaller and its selling like hot cakes again? The mini (wen mini size) sold so well? the original Ds3, was everywhere then boom they ruined that buy making its a weird suv thing?? And the 500 its small and wasn't the best car but still sold in millions. Cause some people want or need small city cars. This I hope does well for Toyota. (Sorry for the semi rant there haha)

      I'm an apprentice. It's scary the amount of bother modern diesels give. Emissions restrictions are crippling, chokes the engine. And we drill out the DPFs, as diesel emissions are not tested in NI.
      I dread to think the cost of fixing them right, only for it to happen again.
      And there's waaaay too much electrical bs in modern cars. These ADAS crash avoidance systems will be some nightmare in 10yrs time!
      I got a MK2 driver's seat for £60 from scrap yard. It bolts straight in & has more adjustment & comfort over the original seat.
      Also added rear speakers, upgraded the fronts, & painted the silver interior trims florescent orange!

      All the same, it requires unusually precise clutch control not to stall this engine, which is very small, has low rotational mass, and idles very slowly (for its type). It’s a fair trade-off for the benefits, but there won’t be many reviewers who don’t stall it. Owners figure it out (and still stall it once in a while).

    And if you want to go offroad in a city car, then you want the Panda Cross 4x4 or the Suzuki Ignis Allgrip. Both of which are actually pretty capable - especially the FIAT - at unmade roads general winter driving. The Aygo X will be slightly better than many city cars due to it's slightly increased ride height. But only the styling is actually inspired by SUV design.

    • @samuel_d
      @samuel_d 2 года назад +2

      A bit more ground clearance is the only part of the SUV concept that most people need. The clearance on the old Aygo was marginal for normal use. Unfortunately the cost of this greater ground clearance is greater aerodynamic drag: the drag coefficient has gone up from 0.28 to 0.32, besides the increased frontal area. That will take a toll on motorway economy (though it will still beat the vast majority of cars, of course).

    When I first drove my wife's new Aygo I stalled it! Over the years I have driven all sorts of vehicles but I still to this day see it as a challenge because I don't drive it often. The high clutch bite , which might have been sorted now, doesn't help either.

    Toyota's response to the surprising success that is the Suzuki Ignis, makes me wonder why they didn't use Suzuki's excellent 1 liter turbo engine in it. Mind you, have to wonder why Suzuki didn't either, the 1.2 litre lump the Ignis has is hardly "dynamic" either (and I own an Ignis and am happy with it but I'd love an engine with bit more pep!).

    So what are new drivers, some older drivers and drivers who don't need an SUV supposed to drive then? Electric SUV's are going to be big and wide. Not going to fit many on street ( parking ) and will struggle at muti storey car parks etc. Densely populated areas need smaller cars both in the UK and abroad. Hopefully Suzuki and maybe Subaru will sell rebadged versions as well

    • @gravemind6536

      In theory electric vehicles if designed properly could have a brilliant turning circle in spite of extra size because there is more room at the front for the wheels to turn as there is no gearbox or engine in the front getting in the way. RWD cars have also typically always turned as well if not better than smaller FWD cars to a certain point.

    • @robsmall6466
      @robsmall6466 Год назад

      @@gravemind6536 It's not so much the turning circle as the size of the vast majority that are on sale. Renault Zoe ( but that car is a very old design ). Maybe the Honda e but it's expensive. 208 and Corsa are available as an EV and the Mini but all three aren't as small as their predecessors. Mini probably does the best job as it's very similar to the design that's been on sale for a while. Compact city cars that are narrow, light and short in length are in short supply. Toyota Aygo, Suzuki Celerio, Vauxhall with the modern Viva that was discontinued were all ideal for a certain demographic and left a lot of space on the roads, car parks etc

    What is the point in these review, nothing on how long the engine lasts, how much it costs to repair with parts etc. No explanation on how the engine works. No discussion about how that “that 2005” is still working fine on the roads today. No we get it’s old so it’s needs a change. This car and older version make more sense than an electric car, literally better for the environment when you take into account how electric cars are made and the problems of getting totally eco energy supply. Also the fact that this car will literally last years while electric cars are untested, but if Tesla are anything to go by…… No all we get is, “heheh I stalled the car” because I’m used to driving a massive car.

    • @samuel_d
      @samuel_d 2 года назад

      @@nothingmuch.3014 The tyres won’t cost a fortune, because everyone else is moving to big wheels too - making these sizes popular.
      The reason for the big wheels is that they have marginally lower rolling resistance. That matters for fuel economy in the city. And Toyota had to fight for every gram of CO2, because the drag coefficient of this crossover-styled model has gone up from the old Aygo: 0.32 now versus 0.28 before. Plus, the new car has a larger frontal area. All of that adds up to more fuel burned, so the bigger wheels win back a little economy.

    Saying Toyota's claim of the Aygo X being SUV inspired is a lie, because it is not 4wd, is utter nonsense!. I honestly despair of the rubbish spouted by motoring journo's these days!. First, Toyota saying its styling is SUV inspired just means they have used typical SUV styling cues, which they clearly have. Second, a car does not need 4wd to be an SUV, as can be deduced by the fact that many are not.
    As for the engine being prone to stalling because it is old?, again, utter nonsense!. I know this because we had a Daihatsu Sirion in 2008 for three years, it uses the same engine and in those three years I don't recall ever stalling it. The gearing of the Aygo X may be responsible, as may the clutch biting point, but the engine itself is not.
    Performance?, typical motoring journo obsessing over the performance above all else. The UK speed limit is 70mph, a speed at which the Aygo X will comfortably maintain, and the acceleration is perfectly adequate for what it is. I never found our Sirion particularly lacking and even driving from Aberdeenshire to Lancashire which we did a couple of times.
    Don't get me wrong, I am not a huge fan of the Aygo X (as much as I like its looks), but only because Toyota has done such a poor job with the packaging, specifically rear seat space. Referencing the IQ is ironic given that it (by stark contrast), is an absolute masterclass in maximising interior space. Also, Suzuki's Ignis shows just how much interior space and flexibility could have been liberated from an SUV inspired city car if Toyota had bothered to put some effort in. The overall length and wheelbase of the Aygo X is pretty much identical to the Ignis, so a poor show here from the makers of the IQ.
