- FIRST LOOK - flying Rex Airlines' inaugural Boeing 737 from Melbourne to Sydney - the first commercial Rex flight on the world's second busiest air route. With water cannon salute, the flight, talking to passengers at the terminal, take a look at the Rex 737 as I fly from YMML to YSSY (and back again).

I love Rex as it is such a unique airline, and I was excited to see the 737 coming into their fleet, it’s also a nice aircraft to plane spot from Sydney

I was going to try and get on the first flight for my new channel (Melbourne Flyer) but my wife was due to give birth around 24th Feb and thought it was too close to that. Turns out, our newborn decided she want to arrive on the same day REX has their inaugural flight... Great Video as always Stef! Keep up the great work!

They’re extending the runway by 200m in Merimbula to get the 737 in there. The town will crack the shits at the noise!
Flew in with the Qantas Dash 8 today, currently its a daily rex to both cities and 3 per week likewise with Qantas. If they do extend the runway, you'd assume it'd be a daily flight for a 737. But yes, they flu directly over Tathra, past Tura Beach and straight over the town. Hopefully if anything the 737's loop around over the highway and land on the southern end of the runway, coming alongside Pambula.

Yes this is the million dollar question - what will Qantas and Virgin to do react to this. Time will tell but for now it's great to have another operator on this route.
@@StefanDrury Rex is just filling the void left by Tiger while ultimately following the launch path of Virgin Blue realistically... just it has much deeper pockets at it’s launch of jet operations then Virgin Blue did...

Rex does have planes at Brisbane but I’m not sure the routes

I say this as someone who HAS to fly Rex to Mt Isa and other communities in the far north. I really hope that this doesn’t mean that they ignore those ageing Saab 340’s even more than they do already. Cramped, noisy and unreliable it’s pot luck whether your plane will actually fly that day. It’s no fun turning up at the airport and waiting until the early hours in an unmanned airport for the replacement plane to arrive. Nor the time when the ground power wasn’t available and we nearly didn’t leave due to other power issues. Then the time when we had instrument failure just after leaving Cairns and had to return to base to get a new plane for the day. And for this we pay over a thousand dollars return.
Hopefully they can pick up the ATR Turboprops that VA Regional has now discontinued...
Love this video, Stef! More options to travel around Australia. Sometimes, Qantas can be expensive, even for just an hour of flight.
Thanks Renz, yeah some healthy competition that gives travellers more options is very welcomed in my book.
Hope they do well and expand their network domestically and internationally too. May take a while if possible.

Great video, Stefan, of the inaugural flight and I hope to have an opportunity to try out both of their jet and turboprop services. I'd love to see them here in Darwin one day, particularly on the Adelaide route to give Qantas and JetStar some much needed competition after Virgin ceased their DRW-ASP-ADL flights.

Not fond or airports at all, but yeah, if you choose business class it is quite enjoyable. Did that for the first time flying from Scotland to London (just before the human malware). And though the business-class seats were not something I would pay so much more for, the airports lounges were the best, so much more relaxed.

Have a great trip, definitely head for the harbour if you haven't been before. A walk in the botanic gardens, and around the Opera House / Circular Quay is great. Get a drink at Opera Bar and take in the views. Enjoy.

Good on REX for getting to that point.... however from my previous findings (admittedly 10years ago) they paid staff junk wages & expected large workloads of all staff. Hope that has been rectified.
