- Over the past few years Regional Express, or REX, has been transforming itself from purely a regional carrier to a serious competitor to Virgin and Qantas on mainline routes between capital cities.
But what are they like and are they suitable for the business traveller? Watch this video and we'll find out together.
REX Business Class - Are They Up To It?
This REX business class flight review was filmed on my flight from Adelaide to Melbourne on a REX 737. My upgrade from economy class to business class was due to a successful upgrade bid of $85.
The REX Business Class experience starts at the airport with priority check-in and luggage followed by access to the REX business class lounge.
The REX ground staff in Adelaide were wonderful - helpful and friendly! They even let me board a little early so I could film the cabin without passengers.
The excellent service continued onboard as we flew REX business class to Melbourne.

Nice video. You said you wanted us to give our experiences with Rex. Until today, I had never heard of Rex Airlines, so all I can say is the only experience I have had with Rex is when I dated a guy named Rex 55 years ago. He was a perfect gentleman and he was so good to me.
As far as the airlines, I would probably fly with them. The seats look comfortable and look like they have space between them.

Hi Dennis Further to my previous comments...Having always been allowed access to the Rex Lounges I was denied before my return flight to Melbourne at Adelaide Airport. Again I showed the customer service agents your latest video on this subject.
"Clayton's upgrade"
Despite this I still prefer flying Rex over the opposition.
I think an abbreviated version of the terms & conditions should accompany the email advising of a successful upgrade.

Immaculate timing with this video, Den! I'm doing MEL-ADE return in March with Rex and have been contemplating, ever since booking, whether to try a business class upgrade bid. I've never flown business in my life and contemplated for days whether I should splurge for this trip. I opted not to as it didn't feel like it would be worth the additional cost just for 85 minutes on deck and an hour in what could possibly be an ordinary lounge beforehand.
But if I can get an upgrade for $85 one way, I'm definitely going to give it a go!
Rex have always lived up to their image of being very friendly to fly with. While I can understand why you may want more capital city flights with them, bear in mind that they have cut back on regional flights and routes, and we need more flights in the regions. Hey there is a question! How many youtube vloggers covering airlines live in regional locations? Have to address the capital city bias perhaps! There may be an opening for a RUclipsr there, something a little different to watch!

Cheerful attitudes from airline employees make almost any flight enjoyable. Add in a lounge, comfortable seat, a good meal...Not a bad way to travel at all. If you ever get off of a flight feeling like the flight wasn't long enough, they've done a great job.
I flew biz class ADL/MELB with Rex in Oct 21 on an older plane. I got in early with the ticket and I thought it was great value. At the time I thought the Rex Lounge was a little small but it seems they have re-jigged the room to make most of the space. A larger lounge will be a winner for Rex. Personally, I will only be flying Rex when I need to travel domestically. Thanks, Dennis, for showing Rex and what they have to offer.
Hello Dennis, I used to fly with Rex Express from Mount Gambier to Adelaide and to Melbourne on a few occasions and found the experience to be some what small and cramped. Still I am happy that Rex is expanding to other places in Australia. Well done in bringing us the latest update on Rex Express.
My wife and I recently flew REX return from Sydney to Brisbane. Perfectly good experience in every way and certainly comparable to Virgin and better than QANTAS. Well done REX.
I wish REX would live up to their “hearts in the country” slogan, sadly those of us who have to rely on their sub par and massively over priced regional service find it hard to be enthusiastic about these mainline services.
I flew Rex economy last year, and it was nice to get a little packet of nuts in addition to the complimentary water/tea/coffee, considering they were cheaper than Virgin. Virgin would earn a few extra marks in my book if they also just offered a simple snack. It's fantastic to see Rex flying more and more routes, the more competition in the Australian domestic market the better!
Flew Rex to Melbourne from Sydney really nice experience hopefully they get some more schedules as you say.
What a great Trip Report Dennis!! So awesome to see Sean has popped up at Rex in ADL he was one of our awesome Cabin Crew Team members operating International services on our VA 77W and A332 Services he always brought a smile to my face every time I saw him with infectious personality!! I had reason to fly them home from SYD to MEL on 15 Dec on ZL due cancellations on VA and they were a great alternative to VA and QF!! Gotta love competition!!
Not tried Rex, but a shout out to Adelaide airport. It is such a good place to arrive long haul, and Adelaide is a mere 15 mins away.
Fit a lot into 5 and a half minutes, great review of an airline I'm sure we'll see you do more of!

I last flew REX around 15 years ago on one of their SAABs between Ballina and Sydney. A great aviation experience and my only turboprop flight. Looking forward to getting onboard REX again someday soon. Thanks for all the great content Dennis, awesome channel!

Seems like a nice little airline. Nice modest lounge, good service for an hour flight, and given Qantas’ issues of late more competition is never a bad thing.
Great review Dennis , we fly REX every time from Wynyard to Melbourne on the SAAB 340,s a 1 hr 15 min flight .
We avoid Qantas like plague , REX Airlines has a far better service than Qantas every time .
I remember when the SAAB 340,s used to have lambs wool seat covers .
They were ex American Airlines aircraft hence the blue seats .
I had the same food on my recent flight on Rex! That tart was soooo sweet. I also got an upgrade but no access to the Lounge in Sydney and Melbourne. The Melbourne Lounge is tiny and depressing being downstairs. I love Rex! They are cheaper than Jetstar normally. I only fly Rex now.
Flew with REX just before Xmas from MEL to Hobart as our original flight with Virgin was cancelled at the last minute, never flown with REX prior to this but found them brilliant and would recommend them. We will definitely fly with them again.

I was really impressed with Rex recently, fly Brisbane to Melbourne and return. There's plenty of room, the crew were fantastic and they were on time. You also don't have to pay for tea or coffee and you get a snack included. I'll be flying with them again.
Nice lounge, certainly quieter than the free-for-all Qantas and Virgin lounges
It's not often people even hear of Rex having a business class, since they're known for being a cheap/bush airline.
Having said that, that meal looked amazing.
Meant to say I wrote my comments from the Rex Lounge in Tullamarine after I finally gained access. I showed the young lady your video to backup my case.
As a former Adelaide resident now living in Daylesford I fly home to family in Adelaide & Coffin Bay often. So here's hoping tonight's flight is enjoyable😊

Flew with them SYD-MEL in economy right "after" covid. Great airline.
Good and very efficient review. Liked the look of this airline and the food. But pass on the gag-inducing wooden cutlery.
It would be nice that REX would look to this side of the ditch and see if they could compete with air nz in our regional market maybe have a Auckland , Christchurch to Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane and then flying around New Zealand
Australia needs more competition in the air. Good to see that Adelaide passengers can access the interstate Rex network now. In Perth we are waiting for Rex to arrive. I'm sure they will be wanting to get us into their interstate network considering that they have a number of regional routes within WA.

Hi Dennis I enjoy watching your videos & am so glad I watched this one only yesterday. As a frequent flyer with Rex I have bid & been upgraded many times. Tonight however I was going to be denied lounge access. I was told by the young lady " They have changed the rules recently & if you bid you are not entitled to Lounge access or extra Business luggage allowance.
I wasn't taking that lying down so I dropped your name, saying about your upgrade video. I also asked for John Sharps email to give him some much needed feedback on their 'Claytons Business Upgrades'
Pay extra for half an upgrade?! I don't think so.
I am a committed Rex Frequent Flyer Member & tell everyone how good Rex is.
Pity their marketing is so lousy... most people don't realize they fly 737s and think they are still only flying Saabs to the regions.
I won't fly Jetstar even if their fares are cheaper.They are always late & cabin crew are jaded. Whereas Rex flights attendants enjoy their jobs and customers.
Definitely going to follow this situation up with Rex.

So I changed from V/A to REX & have been flying with REX full for work for the last 12 months & absolutely LOVE them the only time now that I fly V/A is between Melb & Newcastle all be I have been pestering REX to get on that route because V/A are the only ones that fly nit & it's always booked out for weeks ahead of time every time I fly it it's choc ablock.
So just 1 small thing that I need to correct you on not all REX 73's have WiFi only some Ex REX 73's have WiFi, as much as I LOVE Rex I HATE that Ex Silk air Aircraft it's got to be the most uncomfortable aircraft in the Rex fleet I always fly 14A window over the wing ( anyone would think that I was an Aviation enthusiast ) 🙂
I have to agree the REX staff both on the ground & onboard are incredible.
My only feedback that REX need to do is to start serving meals at meal times if you are catching an early morning flight chances are you have not had breakfast yet or you ate hours before your flight & an onboard Breakfast would go down very nicely like wise with Lunch & Dinner.
Other than that REX just need to add a few more 73's and increase their frequency on their routes as well as develop new routes ( Melb - Newcastle ) & they will continue to grow.
I think Rex are great. My preferred domestic airline

$5.00 seems remarkable. I have flown Rex to Melbourne a couple of times and was offered the opportunity to fly Business Class. However the email said bids start at $60, so it must have changed. Nonetheless, I would fly Rex again even in economy, so much better than JQ.

last year I did many trips to Adelaide for work and spent a ton of time in that lounge, Very comfortable and the staff were great
Epic video Dennis! I clicked it as soon as I saw your community post! I really enjoyed the video same as Paul Stewart’s recent REX review but it was still great and I love bidding for upgrades and having it work out (which hasn’t ever worked out for me… yet!) Besides the point great video what a great flight, a great Boeing 737-800 even though I love the 737 MAX too and would fly it with VA or REX someday when they get theirs! Also at 1:54 I love that boarding pass icon from when they got their first 737! It’s clever, airplane related, and conveys a message quite well the American carriers aren’t smart like that with their marketing!

Thanks for the great review Dennis. I have been a very long term QANTAS frequent flyer but have been looking at alternatives because of poor service and performance. REX looks like a good possibility.
They’ve now taken away the business class lounge when you bid for an upgrade. Which is a shame.

I remember when Rex did Canberra to Sydney trips for $79 each way. They were tiny maybe 12 seaters, with sheepskin-covered chairs and everyone got a glass of bubbles. Now you’re lucky if it’s $300 on qantas!
Totally agree with your experience Dennis. Last October I flew REX to Sydney Return from Adelaide and likewise put in a successful bid for Business Class which was faultless. Yes it's REX for me from now on.
Oh Dennis, if only you could use your considerable influence to persuade Rex to drop that silly slogan on all their fleet ‘Our Heart Is In The Country’ ! To me, they’re aviation’s equivalent of the EV vehicle firm BYD ‘Build Your Dreams’ 👎🏿
used to fly Whyalla - Adelaide with REX until they locked horns with the Whyalla Council and pulled out. We are now left with a hugely over priced and sparsely timetabled Qantas link. I am not kidding the 35 minute flight doubled in price. Pleased you have reviewed the interstate run. I have been telling all and sundry to use REX if possible.
So sad that the cabin crew have lost the RM Williams moleskin trousers and shirts.

Two things to point out, as of December last year bid upgrades no longer receive free lounge access or an upgraded baggage allowance (this is now noted on their website), I am guessing this flight was taken before mid December last year? Also I hate to say but you've been scammed by the upgrade system. This is a common rex trick they tell you that you haven't been successful and to up your bid often despite no one else having bid.
Thanks, that's good to know. This flight was back in Oct so before the change. I did suspect they were trying to upsell with the unsuccessful bid trick that's why I didn't up it a second time.
$5 bargain for dennis. Most likely no one else.
