I did Sturgis in 1997. That was my first and last rally. I put on my 600,000 plus miles all over America steering clear of cities and people. Just to much traffic and people for me at rallies. I prefer the Alaskan Highway any day over crowded rallies and cities. I love your videos man. I hope you get a chance to ride the Alcan and British Columbia, Yukon etc…and share your videos and stories. Most of my long distance touring was from 1995-2011. Great memories.
Daytona always perplexed me. I've never been, but I've seen so many videos of people going from all over the country. The conundrum is this. It's in February. It's oh my God cold in 80% of America. Yet so many will tough it out because it's usually decent temps in Florida during the rally. So you go through hell to get there, with the hope of a great week or so of riding. Typical motorcyclist mentality lol. It's been cold as balls for 3 months already and I might die trying to get to Daytona....SCREW IT! IM GOING!

I did the reverse trip from biketoberfest 2 years ago when I picked up my bike from then still Bruce Rossmeyer and rode it home to Raleigh.
I had great weather but man, you guys were rockin' it in the rain. Good on you!

2 days before I was to head over to Daytona I got hit by a car in my own neighborhood....walking. screwed all my plans up, looked like one hell of a ride day. Led Zeppelin in through the out door is good cruising music.

I may slack off on gear from time to time because of the heat but I always wear a full face helmet. I've been down the highway on my head, thankfully I was wearing a helmet. Hell of a trip down, hope the trip back is better.

Hey John! I hit the same storm front a couple of days before you did. I left on a solo trip to Daytona from the Saint Louis area and headed straight south to the Gulf Coast. It was like a huge monsoon type of rain. Several, several hours of rain the first leg and second leg of the trip before getting to Pascagoula Mississippi. The bike air intake was sucking in rain water so much the bike tried quitting on me twice. Unbelievable!! By the way, I was stationed in Brunswick Maine in the mid 90's and made a few trips up to Caribou to pick up Humvees while serving as a SERE Instructor near Rangely Maine the same time you were stationed there with the Air Force. I eventually retired from military service. Thank you for your service to our beautiful country.

Some ride brother. It was nice meeting you and Danny at destination Daytona. I’ll make sure I bring that sharpie next time. I was initially going to leave Saturday or Sunday but decided Friday was the best weather to get out of dodge.

Absolutely gotta keep your head on a swivel at big bike rallies more than normal!! This years tally at Daytona was 92 crashes, with 5 fatalities, no joke. Part of what we do, but something not to forget while enjoying the hobby we love!!!! Glad you had a successful ride down here, was hoping to bump into you but not this time, keep riding John!!

Great to see you guys actually riding to a rally, way too many trailer queens out there. Getting there is a big part of the trip. Last year 3 of us old buggers rode to Mexico and back from Alberta for the El Diablo Run. 7200 km of great memories!

I never stay dry in rain gear and the balaclava might be the missing gear. Always get soaked around the collar.

Had em on my road king and they did awful in the rain.
Been running the OEMs on my road glide 124 and they been great so far in rain and dry but only last 12k-ish.. or little less…Good in Chitown cold too. Wpuld love to find something that deals with the really cold/damp shit tho without doing a winter/summer swap out like I do with my car
Pro Tip: the strap on the bottom of the boot covers goes on the back of your heal. This keeps tension on the cover over the front of your boot. Then you rain pants strap goes under you heal.

Just letting everybody know, I’ve lived in Florida my entire life not saying no one don’t know what they’re talking about but Florida does have helmet lol you just have to have a certain amount of insurance on yourself to be able to ride without a helmet.

I don’t think so like I said in the video the drainage on the roads works really well. There wasn’t any large pulling of water on the highway, not really sure.
You don’t want to see an accident but it’s a reminder that you have to ride defensively at all times.
