I tried this years ago but I’m nowhere near Andy’s talent so I stopped. After seeing Andy do it, I’ve gone back to it and love it. I get the dynamics of fingerpicking or the attack of a pick with my index fingernail on the downstroke and thumbnail on the upstroke.
What's the song Andy plays in the intro? Because that "dunnuh, dunnn, dunnuh, dunnn" part sounded familiar, and I'm pretty sure Metallica lifted that little part for Hit the Lights.
You seem to have like an early reflections reverb on your sound wich I love, is that post production or are you using an specific pedal for that sound?
Am I alone in thinking that a distortion pedal, especially a medium to high gain one like this, should be demoed into a clean amp and not a broken up one? For all us Fender Twin players out there...
I love Bandmasters! I have a transitional one that is post-CBS but has the pre-CBS circuit. Love that thing, but it was at home when I recorded the clips...
I think I Found The Perfect Overdrive pedal For My Little Fender Champ x2. Should push the tube very well, And Great For Studio Work . the bass treble a feature too.Great Video And Nice Playing : ) jcm
Nice job. Andy always puts out great rfeviews and awesome playing. Gunslinger on an overdriven amp is its intended use. You fender guys stick to your ocd.
It's nice to see DOD jumping on the bandwagon and lifting circuits from other makers. At least this one is probably a great deal more affordable than the Mad Professor Stone Grey distortion that it seems to be directly, um, sounding a lot like. Or is it just the ROG Ubescreamer in a pro-assembled box? Whatever, it sounds a-okay, just ranting about the vagaries of fx pedal marketing in the 21st century...
+BuzzCrumhunger Lifiting circuits from other makers? The Gunslinger is a DOD original circuit design, what you are hearing is that MOSFET distortions have a very distinct character.
Boneshaker has awesome parametric EQ. You don't even need to use the drive to get value for $. It's a bit like Analogman Metal Zone mod (don't laugh, that mod is *killer*)
+Michael Craig FET stands for Field Effect Transistor, wich are often referred as having a tube like break up and dynamics. MOSFET is a type of FET. Don't know much more...
My Gunslinger was acting up - randomly shutting down or not even powering up, I opened it up to have a look, and to my surprise, not a single MOSFET appears to be in the circuit. Three opamps (bipolar) two diodes and a 2n3904 bipolar transistor. No MOSFETS.
I have owned one for about two years now. It is the best-sounding distortion pedal I have ever heard, I love it to bits with how tubelike it is, but it isn't without problems, and why sadly, it isn't on my board anymore. I will probably never sell it, but I can't use it live as well as other pedals. Here are four problems I've noticed, one which can destroy the pedal. 1.) When I opened it up, I didn't see a single clipping diode. Perhaps I missed one because of how tiny the surface-mount parts are, but the way I think the pedal makes its distortion by is boosting a bunch of FETs in a row, like a fuzz, to get tubelike gain. These work by boosting the internal gain to ridiculous amounts, the FETs clip, voila! Distortion. What this also does is make microphonics like a motherfucker, and this is the biggest problem with this pedal. I can't blend it with my amp distortion like my trusty DS-1 (I stand by the statement that if you dislike a DS-1, you haven't used it correctly) because the very second I stop playing, it squeals, feeds back and the sound guy wants to punch me. Same for gain stacking with my ODR-Mini, which sounds fantastic if not for those insane squeals. It gets to the point I can't use it live that well, only recording... but for recording, I prefer to use my amp, increasing preamp and power amp gain, and using a mild overdrive, booster or EQ pedal to boost it further for solos/chunky chorus parts. The very thing it is most useful for I don't use it that much for. 2.) 18V power? Modern ones say keep it to 12V. I have powered mine on 18V since I got it, but apparently, other people have plugged their Gunslinger into their 18V jack and promptly fried the circuit. Proceed with caution and keep it to 12V. Perhaps I got an earlier model that can take 18V, you may not be as lucky. 3.) Because it shares more in common with a fuzz than a regular clipped distortion pedal, lowering the gain lowers the volume and also lowers the overall "fatness" of the tone. Keeping the gain low makes your signal super thin, so it's impossible to use it as a dirty boost pedal, like many people use a TS-9 or an ODR-1, unless you want your Les Paul to sound like a Strat. Conversely, cranking the gain to get a QOTSA fuzzstortion increases the bass a ton, so much so that one has to adjust the lows to compensate. 4.) It is a DOD pedal, so the footswitch blows. I had to replace the footswitch with a quality unit from Mammoth about six months after getting it. I am handy with a soldering iron, but to a kid who doesn't know about electronics, it would be a fatal breakage. That said, it is still the best-sounding distortion pedal I have ever heard, and I still recommend it to anybody who has a one-channel amp and wants real tubelike distortion. There are so many good sounds in there, like a good QOTSA fuzzstortion when the gain is cranked and the bass and treble knobs are turned down to boost the mids. The Gunslinger is a fantastic pedal with some big flaws.
Honestly speaking, using DOD's own Carcosa fuzz may be better for fuzztortion, because that circuit is containing legit black magick. I've never heard a fuzz circuit do a convincing mildly dirty boost and velcro fuzz
FYI, 18 volts has been known to kill these pedals. Designer Tom Cram has since stated that 12 volts is a better maximum to ensure no damage is done.
so if i use 18v on this the pedal will go to heaven?
Couldn't help but bust out a huge smile as soon as I heard Sludge Factory. Sooooo satisfying tone wise.
This pedal is like an 80s band on the sunset strip, that wants to have a throwback 70s themed sound.
I've seen two of these videos so far and what blows me away is that he doesn't use a pick. Still gets a great sound.
For him, tone is truly in the fingers
Own one. Killer Distortion. Really impressive.
Whoa, sneaky La Villa Strangiato, nice!
Never get tired of andy videos
Gosh that clean sound was so warm.
Andy's diggin' that riff. And that distortion
This pedal is sofa king awesome. AND only I paid $33 for it! Just wow.
Where did you get It?

Ok, the Alice in Chains riff just sold me on this pedal!

"HIT THE LIGHTS"!
3:50 Sludge factory riff !!
Yes!
Knew that sounded familiar.

Funny how Andy pretends to hold a pick, just to fool us all.
Alex Padilla actually it has its uses, by shaping your finger like that, you have a solid picking thumbfinger combo. try it out!
Alex Padilla I used to play like that years ago, but I felt like it sound weak but seeing Andy makes me feel to get back to it.
+rb264ag Yeah, I play like that allll of the time.
That's how I play for 8 years man. Laat year I started to learn playing with a pick. Can't put it down ever since.

Just bought this at store less than hour ago. Have not even played it yet. I bought it because of the name.... Gunslinger!
SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY. I NEED THIS.
Brutal Andy como siempre!!!!
4:08 You insulted me in my house, you`re forgiven this time!
I got mine today from amazon sweet deal only $29 brand new.
Nice Jam
Very good pedal ! Almost as good as my Nobles ODR-S. Very low background noise and cheap too.

Sounds like a Rush riff.
Busting out Sludge Factory! Pedal sounds good, may invest

Any reverb you hear would be from the Deluxe Rev and a couple mics in the recording booth. Thanks!
@@ProGuitarShopDemos Thanks for your reply, sounds fantastic always!

pdg887 On our soundcloud page the Gunslinger clips are through clean amps (Bassman, Twin, and Vox) soundcloud.com/digitechfx
pdg887 True, but some people like to use distortion/overdrive/fuzz to shape the sound they've already got.
Nathan Howard Fair enough, I just wish they'd at least switched it up - had some of the samples done with a totally clean amp, some with a dirty amp
pdg887 get a bandmaster!! earlier breakup than a bassman with the stock OT
I love Bandmasters! I have a transitional one that is post-CBS but has the pre-CBS circuit. Love that thing, but it was at home when I recorded the clips...
can you guys put the song titles in the description so we can compare it t the recordings. thanks

Playing on an over driven amp is this pedals intended use. Andy never dissapoints, Great playing!!! You fender guys stick to your ts or ocd!!!
Song at the beginning??!?
Hmm, this might be what I've been looking for.
VALIENT THORR!!!!
What about him?
What is the big differences in this one the DOD 250, and the Bifet one?
Any chance of getting that intro tune backing track? That would be fun to jam on.
Invisible Pick!
Do you think you will ever do a demo of the Jetter Train Drive? Would love to see Andy have a good go on that!
Valient Thorr!?
AIC Nice!

Imma go get that shit cause of this vid

could someone please tell me the exact 18 volt power supply to use?! ,I don't want to fry my pedal! ,please and thank you in advance.

The first song sounds kinda like Hit the Lights by Metallica but is it something else?

Hmmm DOD website says 9v-12v...............
On sale at Guitar Center and Musicians friend right now for 30 doallars.
this vs Boneshaker? pros and cons? versatility?
Karl Beerman this is more classic amp gain style distortion while a boneshaker has a more modern active style distortion. Hope that helps

Anybody ever come back to this vid just to listen to the intro?
sounds like a hot blues driver to me
Stoner/doom?
Used 18 volts for 8 months and it killed the pedal
whats going on at 0:57 pullin an Elvis?
Is this the same as the DOD FX100?
+ollhashedfetish No.
Buen pedal, no es high gain, pero se luce.

Nice jamming on some Alice In Chains, Sludge Factory ;)
what is the difference between this one and the DOD 250? Where are these DOD pedals made? What does Mosfet mean, and what does it do?
