- Mike works with Dan Murphy -- on downswing theory and natural grip that "naturally" squares the club face -- during the 2015 GreatLIFE Challenge.
Mike. This coming from a man who's taught golf for 35 years. 30,000 lessons the last decade. I've been looking at your videos for a couple weeks. You are by far, the best golf instructor I'm aware of. Simply excellent. RL.
t Abigail Johnson
1 decade = 10 years
30,000 ÷ 10 = 3000 a year
3000 ÷ 365 = 8 lessons a day 7 days a week for 10 years..... Unbelievable commitment to the game well done sir!! Salute
@@Simeon-the-Magnificent that probably includes group lessons too. I taught 3 groups a night of 6 to 10 people per group, 4 nights a week, probably 30 to 35 weeks a year for 5 years of my golf career. It adds up quick.
Every new and high handicap golfer should be made to watch this before being allowed on a golf course. Absolute gold.
I’m taking lessons from a former LPGA touring pro who is a top 50 golf instructor and she says that you should grip the club with how your lead arm hangs to your side, not out in front like Mike says you should. I have more of a traditional neutral grip. So there you have it… two top instructors with different advice. So far, I’m hitting it straight with this grip!
Mike’s downswing move is the most amazing untalked thing about golf ever.. incredible
You all probably dont care at all but does anybody know of a trick to get back into an instagram account??
I was stupid lost the account password. I would love any help you can give me.
@Davis Jaden Instablaster =)
This man has helped me more than any other you tube teacher.
mike you are an absolute genius! finally my swing is soo easy and effortless but full of power. Really start to enjoy my golf now rather than going home frustrated after a round. Thanks! :)
So enthusiastic and very easy for understanding. Great explanation. Thank you.
You can see when Mike does one on one. He's so intuitive and goes after the "feel" rather than relying on gadgets. Impressive fixes and quick. Wish I lived in the States. Would definitely seek him out.
Most helpful instruction I have seen. Thanks from Canada🇨🇦
Mike thanks so for tip about the neutral grip. I have been struggling for many years with push slice. I played today and pushed only one drive. Amazing you make things so simple.
This guy rocks.... I love his demos...
If hips are open up to 45 degrees at ideal impact, why would we take grip and call it natural with hips square to target line?
Take grip with hips and shoulders open to target line and that will be our natural impact grip,
in anticipation of Level Left. ie that ideal position when both arms are extended after impact and shoulders, and hips parallel.
Of course to hit with hands, hips will remain square at impact and hands and arms are extended at impact.
Ur instructions are very easy to understand
finally honest instructor .
Great videos.
"Great helpful information Mike.. thank you!! Now I have a much better swing with a huge difference at impact!!!
Everytime grip is explained, it should be explained like this!
This looks (3:14 )like a scene from the "Matrix"
The direction that the ball starts is dictated by the club face.Hope this helps.
I love this video the 1st time and 2nd time around. But I just want to know if i have the same structure as the gentle man in the video, I can no longer focus on getting the back of the left habd to face the target at impact unless I want to see draws, pulls right? That is not my goal right. Cause the last two rounds and practices i have been focusin on that because I heard someone on the driving range say it to someone else. Ooops, sorry.
a lot to digest, thank you...
best swing coach ever!
Ever? C'mon now.. 🙄
I still can’t figure out how to grip the club well.
This guy blows my mind. I've been trying to model my grip after other people (weaker) and it just never felt right. Turns out my natural neutral is just strong. bingo.
Can anyone help me figure this out?
By using your technic my angle of attack is down. This is good with everything except my driver. How can I have an upward angle of attack with the driver? Thank you very much. I LOVE your lessons!!!

Hi there, I'm a golf instructor and I follow the same teachings as mike malaska. to have the same concept with the driver, simply move the ball forward in your stance (more towards your left heel if you're a right handed golfer) and then tilt your spine back a touch so that your left shoulder is higher than your right. this will have you hit up on the ball rather than down like your irons. Hope this helps! Best regards
Justin Eller do you give videos analysis?
So if you can establish your own natural grip where the club squares up with no manipulation, what is the best way to add side spin. Is it swing path or rotation of the left (leading) forearm. It seems to me if the clubface is closed at contact, how can you strike the ball in the center of the face? One other question, if I want to hit a draw, I would want the ball flight to go to the right so it can draw back. what determines how the ball starts, the swing path or the club face? Thanks
Paul Van Vleet, the club path determines with the ball will start and the face determines where the ball will finish! Best regards!
Are you sure, isn't the exact opposite of that true?
Justin Eller nope... it is the other way around. Face determines which direction ball will start
Omg. So mamy months ago I missed this. My arm turns slightly too. I have to get out there right now and check this out. It makes sense. Every now amd then I'd hit it straoght to the target but now I believe it was manipulation. No wonder my swing speed wouldn't get faster, I'm still not able to pet momentum do its thing. Thanks
Okay. Just hit balls. Hmmf. Made all the difference in the world. Had to dial back on the rotation I developed but the stronger grip on the left which is neutral for me is where I wanna be. More solid contact. 10 yrds more in irons, no lie. Thanks.
Mike your the best
this is the guy
Mike, if you ever need an assistant, I'm your man!
there's a slight contradiction.. malaska spins the shopping cart right to left by hitting it with the left part of the cart or the heel. likewise the cart gets left to right soon when it hits the toe end. but when he shows the demo with the ball case.. he shows the slice with the heel end coming through first and vice versa for the draw. there's hand waving going on here but I suspect the cart example is what really happens. good players and draw hitters tend to bee on the heel side at impact while slicers and over the toppers tend to toe it in my experience
Didn't know David Letterman plays golf.
No such thing as sidespin
I've attempted to use this grip and end up hooking everything
