    1. You can live your whole life in Texas and not have been to a branch, raised animals or even know how to ride a horse. There are very large cities in Texas.
    2. Texas has just about every biome except maybe temperate or tropical rainforests and coniferous forests. It's a very large state in an interesting place geologically.
    3. People listen to anything, whatever people listen to whatever the people around them listen to.
    4. Y'all is easier than saying "you guys" and yes any group of people larger than 1 is y'all. Its slang and works perfectly.
    5. Not touching it
    6. No, a lot of people go to church but not everyone.
    7. Football is a Friday tradition, Friday night lights and such. Texas is the heart of Cowboy Nation but Stars fans go harder. These are facts, the Stars fans go harder I will fight anyone who thinks otherwise.
    8. Not every Texans own guns but the people who dont own guns make up for those who dont.
    9. Alaska is the biggest state, Alaska is huge, not a lot of people live in Alaska however.
    10. Our stereotypes are very close to true, we're very proud of our state's history and our people. At one point Texas was it's own independent country and we have the mentality of Puerto Ricans. Native Texans have dual citizenship: Texas and then America in that order always.

I've lived in Texas for 25 years, here are your answers
    1) No not everyone's a cowboy. Not everyone dresses up like a cowboy. But some do!
    2) No we don't live in the desert. There's actually a variety of climates in Texas. The desert is in West Texas.
    3) No we don't all listen to country music. I actually don't like country. Also, Taylor Swift, Kelly Clarkson and Rascall Flats would NOT be considered true country to a native Texan.
    4) Yes. We say y'all!
    5) Texas is considered the "flagship" red state. It holds a lot of votes and almost always votes Republican and thus is considered the biggest republican voting state.
    6) A lot of people do go to church. I, personally, do not.
    7) Football is religion. Period. High school, College, Professional.
    8) THERE ARE A LOT OF GUNS IN TEXAS. Texas being an open carry state now you will see people carrying even rifles out in public.
    9) There's a lot of big stuff in Texas, but it's actually the second biggest state. First being Alaska.
    10) Texans are like vegans. We will let you know we are from Texas (but we definitely aren't vegans... Don't mix that up... We love meat and BBQ). I have met Texans from the US military that say they would die for Texas before the USA. I love being American but I'm blessed to be a Texan. 🤠

Okay. Here are the answers to your questions, from two very devoted Texans:
1."Cowboys" being those who actively work in agriculture are numerous and necessary but Texas is huge and has multiple metropolitan areas, the cowboy to city folk ratio probably leans more towards city and suburbia. So in short, no we all aren't, but they are out here.
    2. Texas takes up a lot of space, you can fit the entire U.K. in it 2.8 times, so naturally we have multiple climates. In the west, you have the stereotypical desert, with tumble weeds, and scorpions but that area has the lowest population. In the North we have forest and hills, and then it meets the sub tropics where it's very rainy and swampy with bayous and gators.
    3. In our experience, the more metropolitan you are the less you favor country music over other kinds of music. It is popular for sure, Texas country (red dirt country) especially, but there is still many of us who don't care for it all that much. (also, we laughed when you said Taylor Swift was your favorite country artist because she hasn't been country in a long time and when she was it was pop country, which isn't always respected by country fans.
    4. We say y'all all the time. Its gender neutral, plural, and rolls off the tongue so much smoother than "you all", or "you guys".
    5. Texas is a red state, but the major cities ALWAYS vote blue, and during the 2016 Clinton v. Trump election, Texas nearly went blue (for democrats). Again the more metropolitan you are the more likely you will be a democrat.
    6. Texas is in the bible belt, but to be honest we wouldn't consider it THAT religiously militant, compared to the rest of the south. Church is important, but again, in the city not so much. In rural communities its much more of an obligation. If you were raised baptist, you are more likely to be a *punches bible* christian.
    7. Pee wee football, high school football, college football, and professional football, are integral parts of our social climate. There are towns that clear out and close up shop on Friday nights so everyone can go to the game.
    8. Guns are also a big part of the social climate in Texas, guns for hunting, guns for protection, and guns purely for show. You are taught about the dangers of guns and gun safety from a young age. Most people have safes to keep them in. We have open carry, meaning you can wear your firearm out in public, even on some college campuses. You will meet more people with guns than without. (neither of us have guns nor do our homes)
    9. Everything is bigger in Texas. We are the biggest state in the Continental United States, meaning that Alaska, an annexed state that doesn't share a border with any other state, is bigger than Texas. Portion sizes, homes and land, our capital building is bigger than the US capital building in DC. We even have a monument larger than the Washington Monument
    10. Our allegiance is to Texas, and then America. We are all absolute narcissists about being from Texas. We go to school in New York City, and all we do is talk about Texas. We were once our own country, and we are the only state that has its own pledge of allegiance and can fly its flag as high as the American flag. It has its own culture and we are all super proud of it.

5 things Brits don't really get about Texas but might like! (and 2 they might not)
    1. The state is very diverse...especially Houston. There are SO many folks from all over the world in Texas because of the oil business. South America, Africa, Middle East, Baltic States all have big oil headquarters and many countries have consulates.
    2. The food options are incredible (probably at least partly because of #1 above!). Seafood, steaks, mexican, tex-mex, bbq, comfort, cajun, ....etc...you name it...its there and REALLY, REALLY good.
    3. Its BIG and spread out. This is a positive and a negative. Everyone gets their space...but MAN it takes a while to get anywhere. This is why the automobile is king in Texas and although we do our share of walking/jogging/bicycling not many of us can do that as a way of life. On the other hand, when you want to get away from everyone....you CAN! Lastly, because there is so much space, the cost of living is among the best in the entire nation...housing is MUCH cheaper in Texas than NY, CA, most of the east coast, etc.
    4. Texans love their trucks. Not all of course but I would be surprised if Texans aren't the leading state in the Union for truck ownership.
    5. The people are among the nicest in the entire country...especially as you get away from the main cities of Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Austin (although folks are nice there too compared to other "cities" in the States). You will see people say hello or wave at you that are strangers or watch cars pull over in front of you to let you by. This isn't something you will see much of on the East Coast (for example).
2 things you might not like:
    1. It's almost always friggin HOT! From late April through early October forget about being outside unless near a pool. Combine this with the oppressive humidity, and you will wonder how people live there year round. The nice time to be in Texas? Mid/late October or March-early April.
    2. In the cities, the traffic can be oppressive. As mentioned above, Texas is SPREAD OUT which means your job might be a 45 minute to 1 hour drive away (1 way) from your home. This is not unusual and with several million people on the road at the same time every day...it becomes DREADFUL.

I’ve lived in Texas my whole life, in a suburb of Dallas, and I can attest that most of those stereotypes are accurate but not to the point that Hollywood makes it out to be.
Yes there are cowboys but honestly there’s probably more in places like Montana. I personally have never owned cowboy boots or hats though I very much want to get some.
A lot of Texas is more plains than desert, especially where I live but there’s also the areas by the gulf that are more “beachy”
Yes we all say y’all. If you consider yourself Texan in anyway than you say y’all. I always roll my eyes when people say “your guys’s” like for real? Just say y’all’s.
Much of TX is very conservative, religious but there are areas that are more liberal than others, mostly bigger cities.
Kinda along those same lines, most Texans that I know are gun owners/users. My family owns at least two. It’s really more of a recreational thing, like hey we’re gonna go shooting today, wanna come?
Football is king. So much of the high school experience is centered around football, even outside of the team themselves. You’ve got the cheerleaders, the drill team, the marching band halftime show, ROTC. Football season is a huge time for these groups too even though they technically have nothing to do with the actual game. And even for the rest attending football games and pep rallies is a major part of high school.
Texas is not the biggest state, Alaska technically is but it is the biggest of the mainland states. But besides land mass, I think that Texans definitely have more state pride than any other state. I think that I personally would probably consider myself an American before a Texan but that’s a closer call than you might expect. The reason Texans are so proud to be such is because there’s a lot to be proud of. Texas has such a huge history that the other states just don’t have. We had our own revolution, we became our own country (fun fact: the Texas flag is the only state flag that can be flown at the same height as the US flag since it once was a national flag) we actual have a whole other pledge to the Texas flag that most Americans don’t know about and find very strange. Texas just has a truly unique culture that I absolutely love and am proud to be a part of

"(fun fact: the Texas flag is the only state flag that can be flown at the same height as the US flag since it once was a national flag)"
That's just not true. All state flags are flown at the same height as the American Flag when flown on different poles. All state flags are flown below the American Flag when flown on the same pole. There are no special rules in the flag code for Texas.

    1. It depends on where you live. I live in Fort Worth and grew up in a rural area nearby. We were cowboys and cowgirls. We wear hats and boots. People raise cattle and ride horses. However, we have very metropolitan areas as well.
    2. Texas is huge and we have everything from beaches on the gulf coast to vineyards in the hill country. It definitely is not all desert.
    3. Country music is popular but people listen to all genres.
    4. Everyone says y’all. Everyday. All the time.
    5. We have both Democrats and Republicans but I would say we usually run more conservative (Republican).
    6. We have a lot of churches. It’s called the Bible Belt for a reason. However, not everyone attends.
    7. Football is a serious thing. Real serious. It’s like Europe’s soccer.
    8. Almost everyone I know owns a gun and many have their license to carry. I’m a 52 year old mom and I carry a concealed handgun every single day. I carry because it’s my right and I refuse to be a victim. I train with my guns and I take it seriously.
    9. I lived in Italy for a short time and have traveled around Europe. I would say, comparatively speaking, everything is larger in Texas. Food portions, cars, homes, land properties, personalities are all bigger.
    10. Texas pride is dear to most native Texans. I identify as a Texan first, then an American. I don’t know if other Texans feel that way but I do.

I'm Asian in Texas and I literally wear cowboy boots everywhere even when it's 100 degrees out. It's comfortable. And it's very green here in Houston. People from California are mindblown with how green it is here. And everyone I know loves country... True Texans love Texas country music. Haven't met a soul who doesn't yet. You should visit here during rodeo season. It's very stereotypical. I'm also Republican but hate Trump, my brother was in the military so we're a gun toting family. Even my dad who's a minister supports gun usage and doesn't mind having a concealed gun to church since my brother is an instructor and used to own a gun store. Football is big and most the guys I've dated has played football at one point in their lives, even my husband and his brother played football. Everything is bigger in Texas like our homecoming mums in HS, our pick up trucks (every man in my family owns one or two), and even our personalities. You can drive for 19 hours and you'd still be in Texas. That's why land and houses are cheaper here and it's all about owning acreages here. The closer you are to the outskirts, the more cowboys you'll see. I've seen people riding horses instead of cars around hockley, angleton, spring and even manvel, all of which are on the outskirts of Houston. And yes, we're proud to be Texans and Texan men are the best!! 😍🤠😍

I just found your station and you guys are too cute. Your title caught my eye since I am from Texas, and was very curious what preconceived notions you have about it.
    1) we are not all cowboys and cowgirls, however you may see more of it in the rural / smaller towns.
    2) our state is not all desert...we have beaches and hills...but we do have hot / humid weather because our proximity to the Gulf of Mexico.
    3) country music is popular here, but most people have a very eclectic taste
    4) everyone does say y’all. It has just become so much apart of our vernacular.
    5) not all Texans are republicans, in fact my best friend is a democrat.
    6) religion is important for most Texans however not everyone is religious
    7) football is a religion for some, Sunday night football is a really thing
    8) Guns are a big deal in Texas, why? Don’t know.
    9) Everything in Texas is bigger, we however are not the biggest state. That title belongs to Alaska.
    10) Texas pride runs deep and they start teaching it to us when we are young. We learn Texas history in 4th and 7th grade, twice...that is when you are 9/10 years old & 12/13 years old. We have a lot to be proud of about our state. We have had six flags flown over our state, one of them being our very own. For a time Texas was its own country. We are the only state that can make that claim. We then of course were offered to become part of the Union and join what is now The United States. We are an amazing state.
Anyway, keep sharing and I plan to continue watching. Thank you.

Hey!!! Omg I’m so glad y’all made a video for Texans.
Ok. So first question, not everyone is a cowboy lol but there are plenty. Hats & boots can be worn casually, but lassos are for actual cowboys.
    2. We don’t live in a desert. West Texas is more land. I live on the coast so I actually live near an island off of Texas. So I have the beach life. Houston is the city life. West Texas can be the open field life.
    3. Not everyone listens to country. Houston has a lot of rap listeners; however, there’s a lot of country listeners.
    4. Y’all. Yes. Always. Not everyone I guess but majority for sure.
    5. The electoral college is majority republican which is why our state shows republican. But not everyone is. I feel like a lot of the younger generation is liberal.. like highschool students and such. But I’d say there’s a good mix of all.
    6. Not everyone goes to church but majority yes. There’s a cowboy church in a town nearby lol. I grew up in a stereotypical Texas town so
    7. Football, yes lol. In fact, Dallas and Houston have a feud simply because you’re either a Dallas Cowboy fan or a Houston Texan fan. On Thanksgiving my family & most other families will watch football together and such.
    8. Not all own guns. I knew this question would be in here. I think a lot of older generation do. It’s not a surprise for someone to own one and it’s not a surprise if they don’t. I think the gun thing is due to people owning farms and Texas is harsher on punishment/crimes. I, myself, have my handgun license but I don’t own a gun. I do feel comfortable around them and have gone shooting before. Tbh, I don’t think I could ever use it so why would I invest the money.. I’d rather learn self defense but I digress. My opinion. Also, You have to be 21 to obtain a handgun license.
    9. Everything is bigger in Texas. Come down 🤙🏼
    10. Everyone is proud. It’s a prideful state. Which is why majority of us are excited about this video lmao. I would be more excited to tell someone I was from Texas than America, but I def say both to someone out of the country.
    Love y’all 💛💛💛

    • @cheytrevino
      @cheytrevino 6 лет назад +8

Mar Pen1980 because, as stated above, I know PERSONALLY I would never use it. That’s my reasoning. Not everyone has to own a gun if they choose not to. What happened in the school happened because a parent did not lock away their gun and the kid got ahold of it. Guns aren’t allowed in school. The students/teachers owning one at home wouldn’t have stopped it so using the school shooting to call me vulnerable is ridiculous. I wasn’t there but either way, if those kids owned one at home, wouldn’t have changed anything.

I'm not from Texas, but I lived there for some time (while my dad was stationed there as an officer in the military). I have some family members that live there. Here are a few things that I know about Texas:
1.) Texas is very big. It has beaches, deserts, forests, mountains, hills and plains. I've driven from the Rio Grande Valley (along the Texas-Mexico border) and it takes 12 hours to drive El Paso in West Texas even while driving much of it at 85 miles/hour (136.8 km/hr). The roads are big, smooth and easy to travel upon. It helps that gasoline is inexpensive.
2.) Because Texas is very big, this allows property to be purchased for much lower prices than places like California (I live in the Silicon Valley near San Francisco). Consequently, people have BIG houses on LARGE plots of land. One of my family members is a public school teacher and recently built a 5,700 sq/ft home on ten acres.
3.) Texas is highly diverse. It has a large Hispanic population as well as individuals from many different racial, ethnic and international residents. There are cowboys and tech workers -- and many of them live next door to one another in places like Austin, Dallas, San Antonio or Corpus Christi.
4.) Yes, many -- if not most -- people do use the term "ya'll." It is short for "you all."
5.) Yes, there are cowboys. They live all over the state. It is actually the occupation for many people. They often work on ranches (whether their own or ranches owned by someone else). In some places, it is a very common occupation. I have a cowboy friend who lives and works on the King Ranch -- a massive 825,000 acre ranch.
6.) Texas is a deeply "red" state. This means that it tends to elect Republicans for most state-wide offices. However, more than 40% of the state routinely vote for Democrats. I live in the most liberal area of California and something similar (yet opposite) can be said about our state. As deeply "blue" as California might be, there are still roughly 40% of the population that vote for Republicans (depending upon the election).
7.) Yes, people in Texas tend to go to be more religious than some other parts of the country. However, this includes many -- mostly Christian -- backgrounds. A large portion of the population is Catholic, Episcopalian/Anglican, Protestant, etc. I wouldn't quite people "severe." They aren't yelling at anyone. lol
8.) The food in Texas is amazing! From BBQ to Mexican food to seafood -- it is very good!
9.) American football is very big in Texas. Every middle school and high school ( as well as colleges) have games on Thursdays, Fridays or Saturdays. Sport (in general) is popular.
10.) People in Texas are VERY friendly. I was raised on the East Coast (in Virginia and New England) and I now live in California. The states of Texas and Tennessee seem to be the friendliest that I've ever been to.
    Finally...
Yes, people are proud to be from Texas. The state used to be an independent country. I once read a bumper sticker on a car in Texas that read, "I'm not from Texas, but I got here as soon as I could." People aren't necessarily putting Texas before the nation though. They just love their state.

It's not only size of the state that makes property cheaper in Texas than California. It's due to excessive regulations in California that makes it a lot more difficult to build more houses and develop property that drives up the prices there - and drives people out that state to live somewhere cheaper.

    • @ccchhhrrriiisss100

It’s not a hard question at all. I’m a TEXAN first, and then an American. Any time I leave Texas and then return home, I sing “Deep In The Heart of Texas” and recite the pledge to the Texas flag. I’m not even making that up! Texas is huge. It takes about 12 hours to drive from East Texas to West Texas. I’m not sure how long it would take to drive from the Panhandle to Corpus Christie. At least 12 hours. Because of the size, Texas has 5 distinct terrains. Piney Woods in East Texas, lakes and prairies in Central Texas, the gulf in South Texas, the high plains in West Texas, and finally dessert in Southwest Texas. One stereotype is definitely true. Football! We love it all from pee wee football for elementary kids, supporting the local high school team, college ball, and our favorite NFL team. We love the “boys of fall.”

True. Rugby, what Europeans call football is meant to be a non contact sport where only the heads and feet are used on the ball but American football is meant to be full on contact with an oval shaped pig skin ball meant to be thrown long distances. That is why the protective gear is needed. In rugby you don't tackle anyone from the other team to prevent a goal.

Several of the ten largest cities in the country are in Texas (Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin). One is unlikely to see real cowboys driving cattle through the middle of a metropolitan area of several millions.
Texas is roughly the size of France with a climate and topography at least as varied. There is semi arid desert, swampland, prairie, grassland, etc.
Yes, Texas has a higher than average rate of gun ownership than the rest of the country, but not the highest. That distinction goes to Montana. There are about two registered firearms per resident in the Big Sky state.
Football, particularly college football, is King throughout the South.
And yes, Texans are obnoxiously proud of being Texans. It extends back to Texas History. Texas fought its own revolutionary war against Mexico and was briefly an independent republic before agreeing to be annexed by the United States. Hence, there's a fierce tradition of independence.

As a Texan I always say I love my home country, Texas. Texas in a sense went through 2 revolutions. We alone fought the Spanish (one of the largest super Powers back then) even had been threatened to be disarmed.. this explains of course our love for our guns. We were once a country, the Republic of Texas. Shortly before the civil war and we were annexed to the US. We have a booming economy. As a sovereign country Texas would have the 10th largest economy world wide ahead of Canada and South Korea. Largest oil reserves, we have a gulf for trade, greatest entertainment locations like AT&T Stadium Rangers Stadium, 6 Flags & Hurricane Harbor. Largest meat industry. In fact Texas launched in Worth during the Great Depression from all the meat that’d been produced. A lot of this is why Texans are so proud of ourselves.

Texas is widely diverse in inhabitants and Land and weather!... we have the desert, mountain and basin region, we also have the plains, the coastal lands, marshlands, and evem the Big Thicket (which is a forest!)
Gun culture is great here... gun ownership is a fundamental and god given right to protect yourself, family, neighbor and property!!

This video was great - really appreciated it as a native Texan.
    So to address your questions/comments
    - Desert: West Texas is vastly a huge, dry desert, but east Texas is much greener and made of grasslands and forest areas. I’m from Dallas, TX and its topography is grassland. The coastal areas (yes we have a large coast along the Gulf of Mexico) is very tropical and humid - palm trees and many islands. Honestly our beaches are not very beautiful compared to others in the world, but common vacation islands include Galveston Island and South Padre Island - huge spring break destination for young people. Between Texas and Oklahoma is Lake Texoma where many spring-breakers travel for a swim, to fish, and party as well. There are also party islands in this lake that lie between both states.
-Religion: Texas is indeed part of the Bible Belt are there are many people who identify as Christians and live a Christian lifestyle as well. It’s also just as common to find atheists and what are called “nominal Christians” Nominal Christians are those who identify as Christians but don’t adhere to a Christian lifestyle. All in all, its just as common to find zealous Christians as it is to find non zealous and non religious persons. Also common to find very judgmental zealous Christians and very loving zealous ones as well.
    - Cowboys/girls: Most of Texas is made of small rural towns, and the people of such are very country as well. Very typical to find them wearing cowboy hats and boots whether on a daily basis or once in a while. The larger cities like Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio are more metropolitan, fewer or weaker southern accents, and higher in fashion and business. But also not weird to find a few cowboys in the city as well.
    - Football: Texas is known to be overzealous about High School football, especially in smaller towns. The local high school football teams literally define a town’s identity. My uncle was a high school football coach in small town and when his team did not make station championship for the first time in decades, the whole town shunned him and he lost his job. People are VERY serious about football here.
    - State Patriotism: We are VERY proud of Texas. Those who are not are ones who either don’t identify with common values or who are from out-of-state. As many American schools pledge their allegiance to our national flag, in Texas we also pledge our allegiance to the Texas flag. We are the only state that does this. We are taught from very young to love and honor Texas. Our pledge is as follows: “Honor the Texas flag. I pledge allegiance to Thee, Texas, one state, under God, one and indivisible.” We also beg for a Texas flag emoji. Here you will find Texas flags flying just about everywhere - homes, schools, store fronts, and parks. I believe our strong state patriotism is rooted in the fact that Texas became an independent nation in 1836 following the war of independence from Mexico. Texas later joined the USA in 1845. During its time of independence, Texas had its own currency (redbacks) and law enforcement (Texas Rangers).
Hope you enjoyed these facts! Please come visit us!

I lived in Texas for my entire life. I have family that are farmers that live in the country and are ranchers and farmers. But I grew up in Houston which is the 4th largest city in the nation and the most diverse city in the nation as well. Not everyone in Texas listens to country, I do, but most people I know won't listen to it. Plus, there's a difference between pop country and Texas country. While Texas is mostly Republican the cities are more liberal. It is definitely the Bible belt but not near as much as the "south" in the rest of America. Texas high school football is a Huge deal. It is the best state!

I loved the video! You guys are great! Regarding politics, Texas is considered a "red state" and tends to lean Republican. However, the big most populated cities are typically "blue" and lean democrat. That is pretty common everywhere - the more urban the area the more liberal leaning it tends to be.

Regarding the "United States" thing, early on, the country was a loose "confederation," basically like the modern EU, but looser (different states had different currency, some had official state religions, etc.). There were several rebellions (The Whiskey Rebellion, eventually Shays' rebellion) that necessitated a more united, Federal form of government, so the states united as a single country instead of continuing as a sovereign confederation.
As for the questions (I'm from San Antonio, myself)
    1. There are actually a decent number of ranches in this area, though they're mostly owned by large corporations now. The people who still own land and work it do dress like cowboys more often than agricultural workers in other locations, however. There's a practical point to boots, jeans and a long-sleeved shirt, and a brimmed hat when you're out in the dirt and sun, so consider the practical use of cowboy attire. Though, plenty of non-agricultural cowboys live here, too, and usually are trying to make a cultural or political statement but putting on the cowboy affect.
    2. Texas actually hosts 3 of the largest ten cities in the US (Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio), each with populations greater than a million. As far as biomes go, west Texas is largely desert, central Texas is flat, rolling plains, south Texas contains the hill country and coastal planes with lots of limestone, rivers, etc. and East texas features more heavily-forested areas with a lot of perennials.
    3. Country is goddamn inescapable. I really dislike it as a genre, not per se, but because it's all over the place here. Even good country artists frustrate me just because of the ubiquity of the stuff that sounds like them.
    4. Y'all is a useful contraction. "You all" is a nice, easy way to indicate the second person plural conjugation of a verb.
    5. Texans are rather conservative, and as the Democratic party has sort of lost the conservative vote over the years, we've turned red. We're basically the state the Republicans count on to counter California's big chunk of votes every presidential election. As our demographics shift to a less white population, though, that's changing as well. It may take a few generations. But it's worth noting that we haven't had a Democrat for a governor since the 90's.
    6. The American south, and rural America, tend to be rather church-going, and Texas is more rural and culturally "southern," so there's high church attendance here. John Hagee's massive Cornerstone megachurch is located in my own city of San Antonio. While much of our population is evangelical protestant, the proximity to Mexico also means a lot of Catholics.
As for the "Bible Belt," we have a lot of "belts" here in the US. The "rust belt," for instance, is a strip of states whose economies died when we started shipping manufacturing jobs overseas (think Newcastle post-shipbuilding). It's just a term we use to talk about a strip of states or a general area that is defined by some characteristic.
    7. High school and college football is a BIG deal here in Texas. It's a major social event. It's a cultural institution here in Texas, ESPECIALLY in small towns where the game is the only exciting thing going on that week.
    8. Guns are a big part of our culture. It goes back to the cowbow thing, it goes back to the "Come and Take It" cannon incident in Gonzales before the revolution against Mexico, and even our more left-leaning political figures in this state pretty much have to break with their party on guns because guns are SO popular here. There is a southern "lifestyle" magazine called "Gun and Garden," to give you an idea of how ingrained in the culture firearms are. It has a large historical element.
    9. Texas is huge. We're the second-largest state in landmass (Alaska has us beat), and our population of 25 million makes us the second most populous (after California) As for everything being bigger, part of that is just a sort of machismo thing. There's a huge competitive streak in Texans, probably as a result of all the football from a young age. Some of it has to do with all the wealth concentrated here (tech companies in San Antonio and Dallas, oil money in Houston) or the fact that we are at a sort of cultural nexus of the country between the South, the Desert Southwest, and the Midwest, and we're the wealthiest, most populous state in pretty much any of those geographic regions. As a result, we do what they do, but with more resources behind it. The culture scene in Austin is a great example.
    10. In our history curriculum, in school, here in the US, world and US history are emphasized. In Texas, we have another two years (4th and 7th grades) where the curriculum is EXPLICITLY Texan history. And a LOT happened here, enough to warrant a history class. We were even our own sovereign nation from 1836 (when we got our independence from Mexico) to 1845 (when we were annexed into the US and triggered the Mexican-American War). But beyond that, Texas houses a huge portion of the history of the US space program, we're connected to several major political movements and happenings, we have a fairly unique culture compared to many other places in the US, especially other southern and midwestern states.
Personally, I'm from Texas, but don't identify strongly that way. My view of patriotism is summed up by an old Rush lyric: Better the pride that resides in a citizen of the world than the pride that divides when a colorful rag is unfurled.

Actually, no, for two reasons: 1. Federal law trumps state law. 2. What the resolution for annexation actually provided for was the right for Texas to divide itself into as many as five separate states, not to secede entirely. Secession died as a result of the US Civil War.

    • @TXnine7nine
      @TXnine7nine 6 лет назад

Actually the idea that Texas is the only state that can legally secede from the Union is wrong. Just because it’s written in the state’s constitution means nothing. Supreme court ruled in Texas v. White that there is no right of secession given to the states. What CAN theoretically happen though is a state can be split in to several states (like what’s on the ballot in California) they just can’t secede. This includes Texas.

Y'all are so hilarious! Born and raised Texan here dropping some truth bombs 💣
    1) Cowboy/cowgirl attire is embraced everywhere, but it's more prevalent in the rural areas where people actually have ranches, land, cattle, etc, they're managing. If you're in the city/urban areas, most people don't dress "cowboy" but will bring it out for country concerts and events. Can't live in Texas without one good pair of cowboy/girl boots!
    2) Only Texans that live in the desert are those in the West and Panhandle (north). The south/Central Texas is lush with rolling hill country and eastern parts of Texas (Houston) are humid AF.
    3) I used to hate country music growing up but then embraced it later in life. Most people love it, but not everyone. Spanish music is also popular because of the Hispanic culture.
    4) Yes, y'all is said by pretty much everyone. It wasn't until I went to college out of state that I noticed how much I used it. "Y'all" means you two and "all y'all" means everyone over there referring to a large group 😂
    5) Texas is heavily Republican but the urban areas are more liberal, especially the capital city Austin. Texans have a more independent, "we-don't-need-any-help", "pull-up-your-bootstraps" type of culture that also seeps into our politics. In general, we don't want any government telling us how to live or taking our hard-earned money (taxes).
    6) I don't go to church, but it's definitely a big part of the culture. If you're agnostic/atheist/non-religious, it can definitely feel like a "coming out" when you tell people and people will definitely think differently of you and judge you for it. It's that taboo.
    7) Football is not a sport in Texas, it's a lifestyle. High school football, college football, professional football. They're all part of the culture and fans are FIERCELY loyal. I was a competitive baton twirler for 18+ years that also twirled with the marching bands at football games. It's one of my favorite things about America- the sheer pageantry of football games, cheerleading squads, baton twirling lines, dance teams, fireworks, marching bands, colorguards, etc. It's absolutely amazing!
    8) Not everyone has a gun, but most families I would say do. My parents always kept a shotgun around for home protection and my dad has a full gun safe of 20+ guns. Going to an outdoor shooting range is a nice relaxing afternoon activity in Texas 😂
    9) Yes, everything is bigger. Homes, food, soft drinks, cars, gas stations (Look up Buc-ee's!!) EVERYTHING.
    10) We are super proud. We have a pledge of allegiance to Texas (and America) that all public students recite every morning before class.
Hope this helps! Some of the stereotypes are true and we are proud of it!

As a 5th generation Texan, I debunk these stereotypes all the time. I actually live in the lake region of the state. I can drive 5 minutes and be at a lake, 10 minutes and be at a different lake. Fun fact that a lot of people don't know about is that Texas is the only state that can fly its state flag in equal height as the American flag all other states and countries have to fly their flag below the American flag. That is because Texas was its own country or nation for awhile before its annexation into the union in the mid 1800's. And we do fly the lone star high and proud as much as the American flag.

My husband and I are native Texans. We just discovered your videos and got a good laugh!! Texas is a state of mind, more so than a state. Our allegiance is to both, but Texas is the one state that is self sufficient and capable. Many (most) Texans have had experiences with guns. My husband and I enjoy target shooting, as a sport and for fun. We also understand the dangers in our world today, and will do what we can to avoid being victims of crime. We mark our home with warning signs that intruders could be met with lethal force; this is for their protection as much as ours. We do not wish to harm anyone, unless we have no other options. As for desert, parts of west Texas are desert, but other parts are lush with the "Piney" woods in east Texas, the beautiful Oak trees throughout, we have the "Hill Country", which is beautiful green rolling grasses and mountains. We have many rivers, creeks and beautiful lakes. Texas has a little bit of everything, from natural resources, oil, great farms, the only natural beach in Port Aransas at the Gulf of Mexico, and the best food in the world!! We would love to host you and show you some of our Texas. We recently lost our home and everything we owned in Hurricane Harvey, and are still living in a FEMA trailer. We are moving to Waco Texas to be near our son and his wife, (she is a senior zookeeper at Cameron Park zoo). They met at college, University of Texas-Austin. She is from Poland and immigrated here when she was 15. Waco is the home of the Texas Ranger law enforcement. As for dressing in western attire, you will see more urban looks than cowboy hats, in the cities specially. Congrats on a good show.!! I am a Texan, born and raised in San Antonio - one of the 10 largest cities in the U.S. I do not wear cowboy attire; I have been on a horse twice in my whole life. I generally don't like country music and I loathe Taylor Swift. As a Mexican-American - like most Texans are Mexican-American - I speak English and Spanish, and I listen to Spanish-language music. Like a majority of Mexican-Americans, and, as a gay man, I am a liberal Democrat. I DESPISE Trump, "Trumpism," and the people who voted for him, as well as the "platform" of the Republican Party. I'm also an atheist. Yet, despite everything, I am a Texan - born and bred. And yes, most of us say "y'all!"

weitzfc1 My family has been in Texas since Texas was a part of Spain and Mexico, before the gringos "took" it. I was born here, in Texas, as an American citizen with Mexican and Spanish heritage. I am no criminal, but what Trump and his administration are doing to families on the border SHOULD be illegal.

    1. Texas is huge, and has large metropolitan areas with city slickers that live there, very urban, so no, not everyone is a cowboy but that is what is at the heart of most born and bred Texans. Think of a huge area, 3 times the size of the UK..all the UK, with at least 4 cities, each of which is about 3/4 the size of London. Some areas are very metropolitan and not at all cowboy, or as we say, country.
    2. Not a big desert, though there are parts that are. Again huge state..think of Europe...now Texas would fit Germany, half of France, the Northern half of Italy, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the Czech Republic inside of it. Texas has everything from desert to mountains to foot hills, to piney forests, to swamp areas near Louisiana , to beaches and sea ports.
    3. We don't all listen to country music, and not all music coming from Texas is country...and the country singers you mentioned are more modern pop country than old school country music. I've never heard of Ward Thomas..sorry, lol
4.Yes, most of us say y'all... and yes, I don't say Hi, or hello, its Hey y'all.. contraction of you all.
    5. The majority of Texas is CONSERVATIVE... that's not to say they are Trump supporters, Austin Texas is very Dem friendly..just overall the state holds to Republican beliefs (which may not be what a liberal Democrat things)
    6. Yes, Texas is part of the Bible Belt, but no, not everyone goes to church.. not everyone is Baptist which is what the Bible Belt is about, a lot of Texans are also Hispanic so lean Catholic...and as everywhere, some people are church goers, and some aren't.
    7. Football... it is a big deal, it is THE sport in the state, every small town has a high school team, and turn out for the games. Kinda like what we think folks from England are with their soccer. and yes NFL, National Football League.
    8. Not everyone owns, but many own more than one. Not necessarily the reason, but large areas of Texas are still wide open spaces, houses aren't right up against each other, people are protective of their property, people go hunting, people own for sport, or just to have bigger/better than the next guy
9.Bigger in Texas: Texans are traditionally storytellers, and of course everything has to be bigger and better. No, it is no longer the largest state, that would be Alaska, although if you ask a Texan we'll say if you melted the ice, Texas would be bigger, lol. , but its the largest in the lower 48 (Alaska is bigger but much less populated)
Public school is free up through high school, college you have to pay for. And there are private schools... can't tell you what they cost, varies widely from state to state, area to area.
    10. Texan pride.. yes, its a thing. Not everyone is.. but those with a Texan heart are full of pride in being from Texas and yes, I would say that is more so than any other state I've ever visited or met people from. You'll find that Texas are proud to be American, probably exhibit more pride in being American than many non Texans, but they are overwhelmingly proud of being Texan. ...and um.. Nashville isn't in Texas, its in Tennessee.
