DJ ashba is a great musician, people are hating on him because he was in GNR and most GNR fan still prefer Slash over any other people. but he is a great guitarist
People should see him live. I wasn't a fan. Always been a slash fan and heavily inspired by him for my own guitar playing. But having seen DJ Ashba live(in Gn'R), i can certainly say he is a humble guy and definitely plays melodic :)
Its funny how offended people get by him doing his thing to his guitars. These guitars coast about $250 to build and I bet he gets them for free, then upgrades them and does his "art" to them. Its not that big a deal, its not like he is doing it to a real 1959... even if he did they are his to do it to. He is a great player. I saw him years ago in Beautiful Creatures and was blown away.
DJ is actually a pretty nice guy. He came to one of my bands shows and introduced himself. Was very nice and seemed like a genuine cool guy. Don't understand all the hate. He's got a great gig. Very down to earth dude.
I loved the fact of price for his guitars. It broke my heart, i don't really know this guy too well but if he truly matters about the fans getting his guitars for a reasonable price, he's one of my favourites guitarrists.
Whats so bad about customizing your guitars? A lot of bands and artists do the same thing, he isn't the only one. And its kinda dumb some people just trash the guy cuz of his look, seriously who cares? Let him look how he wants.

Seymour Duncan JB pickups stand for. JAZZY BLUES not Jeff Beck because he had a guitar called the TeleGib which was a telecaster body and a Gibson sound and that had the. Jazzy Blues pickups in it. They were going to call the pickup Jeff Beck but he never endorsed it so they called it the Jazzy Blues pickup.
You se Kerry King, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani talking about the specs of the guitars and why they use them technically speaking. And you see Ashba talking only about the "cool" designs of the guitars. In my opinion nothing is better than a classic colored Les Paul
To be honest if i got a lot of expensive guitars i would probably fuck with them to. I would carve my initials into it, draw on it and do other crazy shit to it. He's just having fun with it like everyone would do.

Absolutely spot on! Judging by interviews etc he seems like a really, really nice guy. I do not have the privilege of knowing the man personally but if you do can you tell him "thanks so much" for an absolutely amazing recent performance in Dublin. Many of us are still buzzing! DJ was phenomenal...the rest were great too but DJ in particular was inspiring - wow, what stage presence and its inspiring how he appears to love what he does! Long may it last....:)
Saw GnR last night at the O2 in London and DJ Ashba was awe-inspiring, even from over half way down the arena. Now that's connecting with your audience!. Such an amazing show.
Slash is slash and this guy is this guy. Slash wrote it and dj plays it. It kinda is what it is. I will say dj seems kinda like a teenager doing what he thinks is cool. I think it's kinda asinine but to each his own I guess.

@SuperMrONeill He's been playing since he first worked up the money to get one. he'd practice up to 17 hours A DAY. He worked hard to get where he is today. He's helped write an album with Motley that was grammy nominated, I could go on and on about where he came from. He doesn't need/want to be Slash, he's Daren Jay Ashba. Don't talk shit on people just because you can, there are far more mature things to spend your time on. :]

DJ isn't pretending, he just joined the band to be their lead guitarist, and it is never easy to fill the spot that slash once had, but he does great and he loves to play music, and he is goed in what he does! plus his hat is something he weared way before joining Guns, and he made it by himself
@groovey65 Slash's guitars, aside from the original, have all been reloaded with the new pickups. The new pickups have a treble that matches the top end of his Derrig.
How does he control the Whammy? Does the wah act as a controller for it, or is he just setting it and forgetting it, or does he have a control surface on stage, or is the tech doing it, or... I'm guessing the tech does all the switching.

Lot of people hating on here... I think it's cool. A guitar is a tool. He has to play these, why not make them comfortable, useable and look the way you want. Not every Les Paul has to be a stock sunburst 59 reissue. I think it's awesome, these guitars look great, sound great and work how he wants. If anyone thinks it's dumb, then please ask yourself if you're playing in G n R or him. Yeah. that's what I thought.
@thejoshcarden slash's sig pickups are not actually slash's, they have been around for donkey's years they are called Alnico II's slash just used them alot so he cos his own sig version (which is actually the same but it was just away to cash in i guess) and Ashba prob uses them to get closer to that early GNR tone it makes sense really.

Sorry, but to me this guy is pretty good musician. He does what he does, and it's his thing. Never understood why fanboys want every player to be just alike. I like the differences in style. In all fairness, DJ Ashba has paid his dues, been in many bands and sessions for well over a decade, and is finally getting some recognition for his efforts. Blame Axl for being "Axl" and being unwilling/unable to settle his differences with Slash. At least it's not Buckethead...

You don't ask people to make you a signature guitar companies should approach you, guitars arn't ashtrays, take the shitty hat off you're not slash, you didn't change to Les Paul becuase you like the tone and it even sounds like he's trying to make his voice sound like Slash.

Thanks im totally hyped waiting for it to arrive :) Its been my dream for 22 years now finally coming true. I think most of the rock stars guitar players are not much different from u and me just lucky to be the right place at the right time. "Talent" is much over rated hard work does the magic. Maybe thats why we love to hate some of them :) I wouldnt mind playing with the current GNR after all Axl was my hero for many years even today i keep wishing for the miracle of a real reunion. But the experience from playing with him would be priceless i think.

I agree. Those processors are unbelievably real from everything I've read and heard (I've not played or heard one in person). Seriously, it may be an ancient idea to someone who didn't grow up seeing and hearing the dynamics of those big amps, but I'm not going to enjoy the show as much as I did if I see a guitarist and bassist playing Variax's and virtual amps, drummers on electric kits and singers doing Autotune. No matter what, it is a more sterile dynamic.
Just like to add that Mick Mars was using a les paul, wearing a top hat, and playing these style riffs before Slash. Don't get me wrong-i LOVE slash, and i prefer him to Mick Mars; but Guns were going to be dropped by their label until Crue took them on tour, and slash started his 'unique' look around about that point. This isn't a competition-i prefer slash, but he wasn't the original one :(
Slash was wearing the top hat before GN'R were signed, he stole his first one from a shop called 'Retail Slut' in L.A. You're 100% right he wasn't the first one to do it though. Alice Cooper and Marc Bolan were doing that look back in the 70s.
Guns will never be as they were in the old days. As their fans, we can only shut up and like (or don't like) them now. I see this GNR as a new band with old name, and there are many talented musicians in it. If you don't like this GNR, it doesn't mean that you have to criticize the new members like Dj, knowing nothing about them.

Dj'd his own style even before gnr. He made/make amazing music, gitar solos in Beautiful Creatures and Sixx am. He's the one of the best guitar players. (the other is Slash :) )

It's not just wood and strings. It's handcrafted, carefully selected tonewood. Each Les Paul has the most beautiful finish. It's not always the player. Even though, yes that's a big thing. Each guitar has it's own tonal personality and YOU DON'T FUCK WITH A CLASSIC. I'm glad he didn't destroy them completely but it's not a Squier strat you know?

He took away the beauty of every single one of those Les Paul guitars. This is absolutely sickening to see a "musician" have no respect for his gear. Slash is just so much better than this guy in every way.

@wiisaluteyou He plays Les Pauls because Axl wants him to; Axl wants him to be Slash; it's not coming from DJ. Prior to GnR, all he used was the Music Man Axis guitar. And he did wear a top hat before GnR as well.
Dj quitted smoking 50 days ago. He had got his hat sooner than he joined Guns. He plays Slash's solos because someone has to play them. Simple as that. Dj is a unique musician, producer, songwriter, designer and guitarist. You should check out his work with Sixx:AM, Beautiful Creatures, or Motley Crue before you start making these wrong statements. @SuperMrONeill He's been playing since he first worked up the money to get one. he'd practice up to 17 hours A DAY. He worked hard to get where he is today. He's helped write an album with Motley that was grammy nominated, I could go on and on about where he came from. He doesn't need/want to be Slash, he's Daren Jay Ashba. Don't talk shit on people just because you can, there are far more mature things to spend your time on. :]

Slash's guitars, aside from the original, have all been reloaded with the new pickups. The new pickups have a treble that matches the top end of his Derrig.
He's the guitarist for Sixx AM with Nikki Sixx I think, right?
Ex-GNR guitarist Gilby Clarke also had a sunburst Les Paul that he thought looked too new/shiny so his tech set it on fire for him.
How does he control the Whammy? Does the wah act as a controller for it, or is he just setting it and forgetting it, or does he have a control surface on stage, or is the tech doing it, or... I'm guessing the tech does all the switching.

Lot of people hating on here... I think it's cool. A guitar is a tool. He has to play these, why not make them comfortable, useable and look the way you want. Not every Les Paul has to be a stock sunburst 59 reissue. I think it's awesome, these guitars look great, sound great and work how he wants.
If anyone thinks it's dumb, then please ask yourself if you're playing in G n R or him. Yeah. that's what I thought.

@thejoshcarden slash's sig pickups are not actually slash's, they have been around for donkey's years they are called Alnico II's slash just used them alot so he cos his own sig version (which is actually the same but it was just away to cash in i guess) and Ashba prob uses them to get closer to that early GNR tone it makes sense really.

In all fairness, DJ Ashba has paid his dues, been in many bands and sessions for well over a decade, and is finally getting some recognition for his efforts. Blame Axl for being "Axl" and being unwilling/unable to settle his differences with Slash. At least it's not Buckethead...

You don't ask people to make you a signature guitar companies should approach you, guitars arn't ashtrays, take the shitty hat off you're not slash, you didn't change to Les Paul becuase you like the tone and it even sounds like he's trying to make his voice sound like Slash.

About the guitars ive feelt the same way everyytime i saw some rockstar smash their les paul to pieces (just to look cool) but thats rock n roll.Ive been playing for 22 years and I just bought my very first Gibson Les Paul i will be reciving it in two days. Its a slash signature rosso corsa and it will never come near any lit cigarette i guarantee. But the day i get them for free i dont know

I think most of the rock stars guitar players are not much different from u and me just lucky to be the right place at the right time. "Talent" is much over rated hard work does the magic. Maybe thats why we love to hate some of them :)
I wouldnt mind playing with the current GNR after all Axl was my hero for many years even today i keep wishing for the miracle of a real reunion. But the experience from playing with him would be priceless i think.

I agree. Those processors are unbelievably real from everything I've read and heard (I've not played or heard one in person). Seriously, it may be an ancient idea to someone who didn't grow up seeing and hearing the dynamics of those big amps, but I'm not going to enjoy the show as much as I did if I see a guitarist and bassist playing Variax's and virtual amps, drummers on electric kits and singers doing Autotune. No matter what, it is a more sterile dynamic.
Just like to add that Mick Mars was using a les paul, wearing a top hat, and playing these style riffs before Slash. Don't get me wrong-i LOVE slash, and i prefer him to Mick Mars; but Guns were going to be dropped by their label until Crue took them on tour, and slash started his 'unique' look around about that point.

Slash was wearing the top hat before GN'R were signed, he stole his first one from a shop called 'Retail Slut' in L.A. You're 100% right he wasn't the first one to do it though. Alice Cooper and Marc Bolan were doing that look back in the 70s.
Guns will never be as they were in the old days. As their fans, we can only shut up and like (or don't like) them now. I see this GNR as a new band with old name, and there are many talented musicians in it. If you don't like this GNR, it doesn't mean that you have to criticize the new members like Dj, knowing nothing about them.

It's not just wood and strings. It's handcrafted, carefully selected tonewood. Each Les Paul has the most beautiful finish. It's not always the player. Even though, yes that's a big thing. Each guitar has it's own tonal personality and YOU DON'T FUCK WITH A CLASSIC. I'm glad he didn't destroy them completely but it's not a Squier strat you know?

Dj quitted smoking 50 days ago. He had got his hat sooner than he joined Guns. He plays Slash's solos because someone has to play them. Simple as that. Dj is a unique musician, producer, songwriter, designer and guitarist. You should check out his work with Sixx:AM, Beautiful Creatures, or Motley Crue before you start making these wrong statements.
