Love the new laser focus attitude on the course. You didn’t seemed to let the bad shots phase you as much as in the past rounds. Your drives and irons looked more pure than ever. You’re definitely on track. Once the mechanics sink in and is just automatic, then you’ll start to naturally go more on feeling than anything. Keep it up. You look great.
Thank you for sharing your journey its amazing! I truly enjoyed watching and i was literally rooting for you on all your birdie putts, good stuff! and congratulations on your personal best!
Big improvements the last few times you've played. Course management has taken a huge leap forward, and the swing tempo looked good with the controlled swing. Congrats you just leveled up.
Hello Mr. Rufin, I've seen your vids off and on over the last year. Welcome to this maddening game of golf. Much respect for your tenacity and competitive drive to improve and ultimately succeed. I'm sure you've noticed, that the game of golf is like a metaphor for life. As such, we get back what we put into it and are all one swing (good or bad) away from being a hero or a goat, each day. I have to mention, I noticed your tendency to sway, more so than rotate into your right side, although it feels powerful, it is a killer of the golf swing. Don't let your weight get to the outside of your back foot. (practice with a door stop or a golf ball under the outside of your right foot) When you sway, the bottom of your swing arc moves too, it's the primary reason you fight inconsistent contact and a double miss. Congrats on the low round!! I know you are not satisfied yet, so keep up the good work... P.S. Do you have alignment sticks? If not, use a club on the putting green. Set it about 18 inches beyond the hole, putt from various distances with several balls, insuring that misses don't hit the shaft of the club/or alignment stick. Practice uphill and down hill (and from either side/breaking putts) until your are comfortable that you are starting to get it... 3 putt avoidance is the fastest way to lower your score, without swing changes. Happy Hunting Sir!!!
Been playing 4 about a year and a half with only RUclips as my coach (ur channel’s been a huge resource 4 my game) and I shot an 82 this past Sunday. Very proud of that! 🏌🏾
Awesome Jerome!! Loved to watch how controlled you were during this round. Didn’t get too excited nor too down on yourself. scratch is just around the corner!!
Hey Jerome, have loved your content for the past year! Your swing has improved so much in the past year its been incredible to watch and a lot of my friends have loced your channel as well. Im about a similar handicap to you right now and tbe thing bringing it down right now is the dan geive chipping method. I would recommend picking up his book and watching his videos about his release system. Love tbe content and am excited to see you progress even more. All the best to ya!
Glad to see you holding the finish more. Definitely helps make sure you’re staying balanced at the end of your swing. Hope to one day play a round with ya. Would be hella fun.
Jerome, check out Will Robins, the Scoring Method. You have the skill already to shoot low 80’s or even into the 70’s if you relieve the tension and have better course management
Awesome journey and progress. Something that may help you, that has helped my score tremendously, is aiming for the back of the green on approach shots. I usually left my shots short when playing pin distances. My strategies for approach shots now are front and center pins, I play back of the green, and back pins I aim mid to back of the greens. This strategy has recently brought me down from a 20 handicap to 12. Keep tearing it up, you’re doing awesome and your channel has been awesome.
Well done Jerome 👏 Excellent progress. You’re following the right path. You have a long term plan based on building foundations from good technique. That’s not mechanical. That’s a strategy that will serve you well towards meeting and exceeding your target of scratch. You’ll be far more successful building your feel from solid technique than building a technique from feel. You’re also not fighting your natural personality which, as a software engineer, I’d imagine to be fairly analytical and considered about the moves you make. Keep showing up and you’ll smash this no bother 👊🏽
🤣 A software engineer I’m definitely not Jerome! I do recruit Software Engineers over here in Scotland though so I speak to them on a daily basis! Keep at it mate 👍
See below: Same on 456 Par 5 3rd shot- You aligned to the left and hit a good shot away from the intended target line and not a pull.-(p.s. hit your punchout shots like a real shot) (Open face with wedges around the green and swing freer.) You're new short game coach is going over the alignment and flop shot. A bump and run usually happens when there is a mound protecting the flag or low uphill and you graze the ball to hit the mound or hill around the green with speed but use the mound/hill to slow it down. More finesse and luck and experience since the Pros play the same course every year which is their secret.
Just a quick suggestion Jerome, on your camera it would be nice if you turn on the stabilizer. it will make the movement more smooth! Thanks! loving your contents!
I sense a big improvement in your attitude and mental focus compared to previous rounds. Stay positive and don't focus on mechanics while on the course.
Getting there. I see on a 467 Par 5 using a 5 Iron in. Please check where you're aimed. Great strike. Looks good when you finish with elbows up vs sweeping/grazing blow. Sometimes your put weight to the outside trail foot but the shots are nice pull straight. Please please use an ANY aiming object. Since you're right eye bias and since you're picking up semi-bad Aiming habits could remove 4-5 strokes per round which means you've broken 85 already-Analytically that is. Holding club in both hands straight down. Let arms hang loosely while pointing rubber end of your club in direction you want. Could be at flag or a point on course. MOVING ONLY and Using your feet Mainly, head slightly/not fully turned-looking out of the corner of your eyes, move feet until you get club handle lined up to the intended direction. Works at practice range as well. Or just lay an aiming Rod down for a quicker result. Use tracer tech APP to add lines on your video to see where you're aimed and you'll be scratch in 6 months.
Nice work. Remember a bad shot is singular, don't make it a plural. To rotate more fully wait longer at the top. Counterintuitive, but you are bit anxious, while you should feel more relaxed, and just let the club fall. In the finish up on your toes (right foot), which is much better.
Love this channel and you have some amazing coaches. You are really getting better and are knocking on the door of some awesome golf. My question is why are you holding off on so many shots? There really should only be about 10yrds difference between your Irons. figure out your normal tempo swing...get your distances per clubs dialed in and then swing to that...stop trying to have 5 speeds for each club...that's way to complicated and impossible to become consistent. Exception is your wedges but get your iron distances dialed in at whatever your normal swing speed is...and hit those yardage # consistently...then you can really focus on putting which is where you lost the most strokes...as do most of us...I recently drove a green then 5 putted...so i feel you!
Great focus! In the video you seemed pretty even mentally throughout the round which is half the battle! you mentioned Mechanical technique, each player is different. I've coached 100s of D1 and national team players over the years (Volleyball). Each player has their process about how they go about the mechanics of the game, there is no right or wrong its what makes you feel comfortable. The one thing I did notice is your swing thoughts. Too many swings thoughts. one swing thought leads to another leads to another and all of a sudden you arent focusing on the shot but what you did wrong. Maybe pick one swing thought that helps you and let the rest be what it is and leave that stuff for the range. You are a basket ball guy right? you ever see the guys at the free throw line? what is the one thing they all do in common before the shoot the free throw? the release right? they arent thinking elbow up or any other mechanic but that release, same applies. Great job on your lowest round, enjoy the videos keep them coming!
@@bertpainter8385 Ive been watching him for a little over a month now and have gone through his older videos. you can definitely see the transformation swing and mentality wise... you have to excuse my long winded post. its the coach in me even though im not a golf coach lol
@@JeromeRufin nah you are bro. Four three putts is silly. you're a low 80s guy at that course with that swing, at worst. You should start playing more than you go to the range for a while and watch the scores drop
Hold up. Did you go OB or take an unplayable on 4? Looked like a double bogey with the penalty stroke, so 88 for the round. Still your course record! Congrats! And fun to watch.
Looking much better. A little more work on your short game, chipping and putting - with fewer chunks - and I predict you will be seeing significant progress.
Great video like always brother! Just one thing u love hitting ur 5 iron why not get a 4 hybrid. With a 4 hybrid u can hit father shots and its way more forgiving then a 5 iron. I would also think about getting a 5 wood or 7 wood way eaiser to hit then a 3 wood thats what i havw in my bag and it had changed my game so much! At least took off 8 strokes from my game! Good luck with everything brother wishing u nothing but the best!
Obviously none of us have the time to devote like Jerome does... Just wondering how long it would take me to train my muscles to perform a 4 second range of motion?
Buds slow down and pace off your putts . Get idea of the grade and the break and use the alignment aid on the ball to help you start your balm on the proper line . You would probably shave any where from 6-10 strokes off your score.
Also there’s nothing wrong with a slight fade for a drive. You’re hitting straight enough that it makes more sense to to do driver wedge vs. 5i 5i w. It’s hard to go less than bogey if you’re taking 3 shots to reach the greens at your level. Unless your putting was out of this world which it’s not right now.
Nice round with some quality shots. Yes, stick with Dana and the mechanics. There is a reason people who are telling you to just swing with wild abandon are 20 + handicappers.😂😂😂
1st thought was Wow, he dressed like a golfer today. It must have been the hat. 😃2nd thought, you really want to focus on practicing putting at least 10 minutes a day. I know your effort is your swing right now, but 10 minutes each day will really make a difference. Even if it's at home on a mat or carpet. Don't know how many are saying your not feeling it, or too mechanical, but I'm with you when learning correctly at 1st. Get the motions 1st, especially with golf swings, all of them, short game, putting and long game. The short game and putting though has a certain feel about it IMO. As for shots you know you're not going to reach, maybe try thinking about choosing a club that gets you to the distance you want to hit your next approach shot from. Otherwise progression is going well. One question about the shot tracer you're using for the video editing. Is it accurate to any extent? It seems off to me trying to follow you on the next shot.
I’m sure you know, but you really need to practice your putting ! Listen I’m a 3.7 handicap, same goal as you, i play for almost 3 years now, and I’m a good putter, i almost never went practice and leaving without putting. And before a round if i dont have much time i only put. I’m at the point that i rarely 3 puts on a round. And little secret, maybe unpopular opinion but i truly think that putting lessons are no so worth it… Putting is all about judgement (how to appreciate a distance and a curve) a good tempo and a good fitting ! I can see directly that your tempo is off, and very hard to have a feedback on long and short put with a bad tempo. However even tho the tempo has to be consistant through your putting stroke, everyone can have their own, it comes naturally with practice, then find a way to graduate your distance, could be by feel our more like what Bryson does by amplitude points a bit like the clock of the swing. Then for me the most important part the FITTING ! I truly think putter fitting is underestimated, and i worked with a fitter that fitted some of the best putters in Asia. First important thing is the hozle, you cant fix it, if you dont have the one fitting you then you’re good to buy a new putter. Second when you get to know your type of hozle, just take whatever putter feel the best for you, no matter how old or new it is. Check different style of faces to know what kind of feel you like, i suggest to go to a second hand shop and test over and over again. At this point dont care about the result so much cause THEN you go to a fitter that will make the putter fit your stroke to make you have the best roll possible. Before we thought that the ball has to roll directly after the stroke however we realize that we need some small bumps after the strike to have the perfect roll. Not too much for sure but all this will be fix very easily and fast with the fitter. Just go to a specialize putter fitting and you’ll be fine. Trust me you remove all your 3 putts and you gonna drop that score very fast
Yup I've mainly focused on full swing the first year, and my second year ill be focusing on short game. I gave myself 5 years to do the journey so just doing it piecemeal since thats the best way I process (def not convention) lol
@@JeromeRufin wish you all the best Jerome ! Pretty sweet journey if you want my opinion. And let me tell since I follow it’s incredible how you have already improved !!
Man you gotta loosen up your body or its gonna be tuff hitting thru the ball and not at it. Like Bruce Lee said move like water. Also prioritize set-up, make sure you are the correct distance from the ball for the shot. Little finesse and you got it. Good work my brother
Jerome, as someone who is in the same boat as you I found some of your shot selections were too complicated. Instead of “80% 5 iron” go with a full swing 6 iron. I know, I sound condecending but we’re both not at that point were we have the ability to just hold off on our swings. For me, I would rather just pick the club that would somewhat get me to my target distance at full swing and then compensate by chipping or pitching instead of stressing too much on how hard I’m gonna swing the club onmy second or approach shots.
Did you have a falling out with Chris Smeal? Just curious because you don't reference him anymore as one of your coaches and we haven't seen anything from him in a long time.
You would see a lot of benefit in spending the majority of your time on your putting and then your chipping. You need to be able to confidently hole out from 5ft and in, and make sure your lag putts are finishing 3 feet or less from the hole. Your expectancy of holing a second putt that is more than 7ft away drops to below 50%, which means every time you leave an initial putt shorter than 7ft, the likelihood of a three putt (and a dropped shot) goes up exponentially. It doesn't look like you're using Arccos, but I would guess you're losing a lot of shots on putting and short game, followed by approach.
This is great round. You should reach out to Scott Fawcett or at least study some of the expectation management he talks about. Especially with longer putts and when you’re out of position. Too hard on yourself and then too aggressive with lag putts and recovery shots
I am enjoying your journey. Take your right elbow and tape it to your sidec Just kidding. You have had some of the best coaches teaching you and you manage to somehow not follow what they teach. Go back and re-watch your lessons over and over until you get the key points into your swing. Watch them I have managed to improve my game to an 8.7 hdcp and I am 78. Keep up the good work.
get a putter with a wider face. should not be “toe-ing” putts so much. go to a golf store try out putters. find one that feels easier to hit solid every time. (make a video of it 👍) keep it up you’re doing awesome man.
Mask outdoors in 2024... imagine... lol but love your down to earth content following your journey! I broke 85 a few times this season had the same goal as you but with a much uglier swing than you haha you are knocking on the door! ha
Some constructive grotesism... *Stop overthink so much. You are not a pro, so think like someone that shoots 80 to 85 *When you get tired club up *Stop working on you swing for a bit and focus more on your putting, chipping and shots inside 100 yards *If you can, play with some good golfer and see what they do and ask think about *And lastly, there's nothing wrong by not touching a club for a couple of days, sometimes it does a world of good for the game Ps i know this video was made before you went for that chipping and putting lesson with your new coach, so can't wait to see what you shoot after that Predicting you'll shoot 85 in you next one😉
Been watching from the beginning. And the coaching you have shown has helped me with my game. One thing about the video…please get a gimbal. The shaky video makes me sick. Sorry.
Yup! Its a 5 year trajectory I gave myself and Ive only primarly worked on long and mid game in the first year, and year 2 is going to be around short game and putting (basically waited until I get a long term short game/putting coach). And then take years 3,4,5 to iron out everything. Just the way my mind works and probably not convention but how I personally operate best
Other than his putting and probably a few bad shot (due to the distraction of trying to record ⏺️ for a RUclips channel)🙄 this dude plays 10x better than any golfer with less than a year of playing golf⛳. I'm very suspicious in his claim. 🤔
man you gotta get outta that place. go play some small town courses so you aint so rushed. they letting way to many folks out there at once and they all seem pissed off. I guess growing old in cali will do that to ya.
You're at the point where playing a course with tee boxes and greens like this course has are hurting your game. Find as many high quality courses as you can near you and stick to them. You'll start seeing a big difference in consistency.
Your camera guy needs an ND filter on the lens and should be shooting at 1/60 shutter speed if he’s shooting at 30fps. You won’t have that washed out white look in the background while you’re in your cart. As a cinematographer that was driving me nuts
Hi jerome .... love your channel ... if you wanna go to golf paradise, please come to indonesia ... we play together .. just let me know if you interest my offer
Dude, you got upset when you made a par on 2. You need to adjust your perspective. If you’re trying to break 85, you can bogie most of the holes on the course. You should be happy with a bogie and ecstatic with a par.

Ahh….the putting…..keep that as your first or at least second priority when practicing mate, it’ll pay dividends!
Jerome, as someone who is in the same boat as you I found some of your shot selections were too complicated. Instead of “80% 5 iron” go with a full swing 6 iron. I know, I sound condecending but we’re both not at that point were we have the ability to just hold off on our swings. For me, I would rather just pick the club that would somewhat get me to my target distance at full swing and then compensate by chipping or pitching instead of stressing too much on how hard I’m gonna swing the club onmy second or approach shots.
you stopped mentioning where you play. where was this one at?
Mission Trails!
Curious, how do you afford all the time for video editing and paying for trips & lessons? What is your day job?
Did you have a falling out with Chris Smeal? Just curious because you don't reference him anymore as one of your coaches and we haven't seen anything from him in a long time.
Dana has been my full swing coach for the past 3-4 months
Putting speed drills and you’re down to a single digit handicap
that 5 iron
You would see a lot of benefit in spending the majority of your time on your putting and then your chipping. You need to be able to confidently hole out from 5ft and in, and make sure your lag putts are finishing 3 feet or less from the hole. Your expectancy of holing a second putt that is more than 7ft away drops to below 50%, which means every time you leave an initial putt shorter than 7ft, the likelihood of a three putt (and a dropped shot) goes up exponentially. It doesn't look like you're using Arccos, but I would guess you're losing a lot of shots on putting and short game, followed by approach.
little advise to try stabilise your camera, its kinda making me dizzy after 3 mins.
I had an alternate camera man for this shoot, our regular camera is def more stabilized. Hopefully that won't be the case for the future!
Dude. You're stressed! You're supposed to have fun!
Being stressed on scoring is fun, I also enjoy being competitive on the golf course and playing against my mind.
Looks like you're not over-swinging on your long-iron / driver anymore and trusting your tempo which is great! Keep it up brother
Thanks!
get a putter with a wider face. should not be “toe-ing” putts so much. go to a golf store try out putters. find one that feels easier to hit solid every time. (make a video of it 👍)
keep it up you’re doing awesome man.
Mask outdoors in 2024... imagine... lol but love your down to earth content following your journey! I broke 85 a few times this season had the same goal as you but with a much uglier swing than you haha you are knocking on the door! ha
Some constructive grotesism...
*Stop overthink so much. You are not a pro, so think like someone that shoots 80 to 85
*When you get tired club up
*Stop working on you swing for a bit and focus more on your putting, chipping and shots inside 100 yards
*If you can, play with some good golfer and see what they do and ask think about
*And lastly, there's nothing wrong by not touching a club for a couple of days, sometimes it does a world of good for the game
Ps i know this video was made before you went for that chipping and putting lesson with your new coach, so can't wait to see what you shoot after that
Predicting you'll shoot 85 in you next one😉
Camera/cameraman needs some serious stabilizing. Getting dizzy from watching. 😂
This
not to mention the over exposure
I think he was sick? He was wearing a mask.
Yeah this was an alternate videographer, our main camera used is a lot more stabilized and shouldn't happen in the future!
Slow down bro..... your 100 miles an hour...😂
Been watching from the beginning. And the coaching you have shown has helped me with my game.
One thing about the video…please get a gimbal. The shaky video makes me sick. Sorry.
83
long and mid game is like a 5-7, short game and putting like a 20
Your 56 will release more than your 60. 60 is the club you pick when you want to stick it
Playing 17.4 hcp golf! Impressive round
Man’s gonna shoot 79… and Jerome always putt to make it!!! Never lag!
92
Distance control with your putting needs a lot, I mean a hell of lot, of practise.
Bogus unless posted in GHIN
He scored an 87! Great job Jerome! Saving time for those who don't wanna watch the whole 35 minutes of him playing!
Or spoil the video...
man you gotta get outta that place. go play some small town courses so you aint so rushed. they letting way to many folks out there at once and they all seem pissed off. I guess growing old in cali will do that to ya.
You're at the point where playing a course with tee boxes and greens like this course has are hurting your game. Find as many high quality courses as you can near you and stick to them. You'll start seeing a big difference in consistency.
fix your divots on the greens my guy
Camera man needs a gimble bro!
Why is that dude wearing a mask haha
Your camera guy needs an ND filter on the lens and should be shooting at 1/60 shutter speed if he’s shooting at 30fps. You won’t have that washed out white look in the background while you’re in your cart. As a cinematographer that was driving me nuts
Hi jerome .... love your channel ... if you wanna go to golf paradise, please come to indonesia ... we play together .. just let me know if you interest my offer
Def got to make it out to indonesia one day forsure!
Hole 4. Instead of a soft P why not just a full A? Easier to hit a full A than a soft P
If that's your lowest round ever with all that coaching...... Scratch aint gunna happen bubs
I calculated out Jerome's handicap based off of the 10 rounds on youtube. He is currently a 17.6 handicap
Your feet alignment is off. You are hitting it exactly where a line from toe to toe is pointing.
Dude, you got upset when you made a par on 2. You need to adjust your perspective. If you’re trying to break 85, you can bogie most of the holes on the course. You should be happy with a bogie and ecstatic with a par.
